Opportunity ahead Study ready for strong second half Matt Study

on’t tell Matt Study there’s nothing left to play for. While some might see despair in the fact that Montana Tech football team’s five-game losing streak means the Orediggers won’t end Tech’s six-year playoff drought, the senior left guard sees an opportunity. “It’s a great kickoff for next year,” Study says of Tech’s final five games. “We (the seniors) want to be a part of that, too. We want to finish out as strong as we can.” After starting the season with a thrilling double-overtime win over non-conference foe Southern Oregon, the Orediggers lost to every other Frontier Conference team to fall to

1-5 overall and 0-5 in conference. Study says the Orediggers aren’t feeling sorry for themselves. The leaders on the team would never let that happen. “It’s not that we’ve seen a whole lot of individual guys really being down and completely tuned out,” Study says. “We’re just going through and reminding guys, ‘Stay in this. Do this for the rest of the seniors.’ “Everybody wants to finish 6-5, and it’s a good way to start out for next year, too,” Study says. “Nobody wants to be the team coming in when everybody is ‘Oh, they were 1-10 last year. They don’t have it.’” Study says the 1-5 is hard to swallow because he knows his team had a chance to win every game this season. “Every game is just one, two, three plays,” he says. “That’s been the story of every game this year. We’ve been in every single game. “Obviously the score in Western kind of shows that we got killed. That’s just to outsiders. Everybody that was there knows that they’re beatable. Carroll’s beatable, Rocky’s beatable. They’re all beatable. “Eastern (Oregon), especially, is beatable this weekend. We’re excited to go knock them out of the playoffs.” The 6-foot-4, 280-pound Study (pronounced Stewdy) is a product of the Flathead Braves in Kalispell.

Stopping Ware, Sampson key for ’Diggers BY BILL FOLEY of The Montana Standard

I

f Montana Tech is going to get back to winning ways, the Orediggers will have to at least slow down Eastern Oregon stars Chris Ware and Kevin Sampson Saturday at Community Stadium. The game, which starts at 1 p.m. in La Grade, Ore., (2 p.m. Mountain Time) is homecoming for the Mountaineers. Ware and Sampson ate up the Orediggers in a 31-15 win Sept. 3 at Alumni Coliseum. Sampson ran for 158 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also caught four passes for 56 yards. Ware passed for just 156 yards. He pulled off a few Houdini acts, though, keeping plays alive with how-did-hedo-that moves. Tech sacked Ware four times — with Ryan Jones, Mike Touzinsky, Mike Waldman and Marcus Johnson bringing him down — that night. However, it was the near misses that

haunted the Orediggers. Ware was sacked eight times in last week’s non-conference loss at Southern Oregon. A number closer to that would go a long way toward a Tech win. Mike Waldman, Connor O’Neill, Ryan Jones, Joe Hickey and the boys up front will be well rested and highly motivated to get Ware this time around. When teams slow down the Eastern running game, success usually follows. Rocky Mountain held Sampson, the NAIA’s No. 3 rusher, to 37 yards two weeks ago. The result was a 51-17 Rocky win. Ware has some speedy targets in Jake Burroughs and Kedrick Starr, so the Tech secondary will be tested. Ketwaun Frank has had to big games at cornerback in Tech’s secondary, which was revamped by injury. Logan Ledgerwood is solid at the other corner, while David Chandler moved from corner to safety to play next to Nathan WALTER HINICK / THE MONTANA STANDARD Kobold. VOLLEYBALL

Shorthanded Orediggers looking for improvement BY BRUCE SAYLER of The Montana Standard

Somewhere between the might-havebeens and the what-to-be’s lies the what-itis for Montana Tech volleyball halfway through the Frontier Conference season. Head coach Marilyn Tobin is poised to make the most of it. The Orediggers went through its first tour of the conference without winning a match, going 0-7 in league play and 7-13 overall to date. Friday marks a new beginning of sorts. Montana Tech will be home against Great Falls in a 6 p.m. match at the HPER Complex to launch the second half. Montana StateNorthern visits the Butte campus on Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest. “We’re down to 11 players and trying to keep everybody healthy,” Tobin said, chuckling some, about the current moment of Montana Tech volleyball. “We plan on winning some matches.” The coach has had to blend and adjust as the season proceeded. Players were lost to injuries and interest, some for short time and others forever. Her lineup sheet, one that configures the various options for match use, is on its second sheet for the first time in Tobin’s 23-year career. “Our goal all year is to steadily improve,” she said. “We have four weeks until the conference tournament (in Helena) and I still feel if this team continues to improve, we’ll be where we need to be in the tournament.”

The schedule has been strewn with player injuries while the losses mounted. Shersteen Cline missed time with a severely sprained ankle. Emily Matosich is gone for the season with ACL and meniscus tears. Emily Lobnitz sat out a weekend with a concussion. Alex Courtney began the season on the disabled list with a shoulder injury. Korey Krumm hasn’t missed any matches yet, but has missed practices with a “foot issue.” Kirstin King has a thumb injury that is being considered for surgery once the season ends. Lacey Phelan is recovering from a slowhealing shoulder that was surgically repaired in the Cline offseason. At least two players expected back from last year did not return due to injuries, recovery time from which would have taken longer than their remaining graduation requirements. “It’s just been crazy,” Tobin commented. “Injuries shouldn’t be an excuse because we have people who we feel can fill those roles. Kids, you give them opportunities and they can shine for you.” Some have played out of position. Butte native Kendra Lyons, counted on for back row and serving, has become the team’s utility player.

Football team rested, ready to go Second half of season starts Saturday at Eastern Oregon BY BILL FOLEY of The Montana Standard

The week off couldn’t have come at a better time for the Montana Tech football team. The Orediggers, who have lost five straight games, used the time to heal up. More importantly, they regrouped. Saturday, the Orediggers open the second half of the season at Eastern Oregon (4-2, 4-1) in a Frontier Conference game that kicks off at 2 p.m. Mountain Time (1 p.m. in Oregon). “We got a chance to sit down and reevaluate,” Tech coach Chuck Morrell said of the week off. “We spent a lot of time in the film room and the practice field working to rectify our first-half issues.” Morrell’s Orediggers (1-5, 0-5) are looking at the rest of the season a couple of different ways as they make their second trip around the Frontier. First, they get the chance to play spoiler with three of their five opponents ranked in the NAIA Top 25. “It’s exciting to go through and see how teams changed over the course of the first half of the season,” Morrell said. “It’s exciting to see what their strengths and weaknesses have become. It gives us some opportunities for attacking teams in different areas.” Second, Tech will look to build the

Your

program toward the future. “A win on our end is certainly going to have implications on the national playoff picture,” Morrell said, noting that No. 23 Eastern Oregon would have a hard time making the playoff with three losses. “But also, we’ve focused on a lot of our young guys and improving them,” Morrell said. “We’re trying to get them to the point where they’re moving past being a new guy and really trying to coach them as veterans. We need to see that improvement take off here in the second half of the season.” Morrell said the Orediggers used their time off to focus on three major areas that need improvement — turnovers, giving up sacks and field position. “By far and a way, as coaches we feel those are the three areas that are preventing us from being successful,” Morrell said. “We’ve really pounded that home the last week and a half, and certainly made some changes that will help fix those areas.” Morrell praised the positive outlook of his team. He credits that to leadership. “I had a chance to sit down and meet with our seniors, and they’re still bought in,” Morrell said. “They’re still selling out, and they’re leading the team in that same direction. “It makes my job easier when everybody is still gunning after going 1-0 every single week, and I wouldn’t say that’s common.”

The Saturday loss marked the second straight night that Westminster lost to a ranked team on the road. The Griffins fell to Lewis-Clark State the previous night. Ashley Marchant led the Griffins with eight kills while also picking up eight digs. Alexis Aalona and Andrea Christensen finished with three kills apiece. Katie Vance and Emily Atkinson each recorded two service aces while Kyndall Kordakis picked up 13 digs. Kylee Nawahine led the Yotes with 13 kills and the team finished with a 50-21 advantage in total kills. Colorado Mesa won by scores of: 25-23, 20-25, 25-20, 27-25. Marchant posted a team-high 15 kills for the Griffins. The junior had a .357 hitting efficiency while also adding 14 digs and two service aces. Both teams recorded 50 kills on the night with Westminster hitting .179 to the .139 by the Mavericks. Westminster recorded 77 digs, seven service aces and nine blocks. It was a slow start for both teams as the match started with six hitting errors before Rebecca Sellers of Mesa recorded the fist kill of the match to tie the opening set at 4-4. The visitors would go on a 6-2 run to open up a 12-8 advantage and would never trail again. Westminster would even the set for the sixth time at 23-23 when Stephanie Jones Morin recorded her first kill. Mesa would respond with a kill by Rachael Beaty and a block by Kelly Regimbal and Antoinette McCormick to take set one. The second set would see nine ties and four lead changes. With the score knotted at 14-14, Westminster scored the next three points and seven of the next nine to build a 21-16 lead. After CMU got within 22-19, Westminster got kills from Aalona, Kenzie Mitchell and Atkinson over the final four points to claim the set. In the third set was going just like the first two with neither team holding more than a three-point advantage. Then with the score 13-10, CMU scored the next six points of the match to open a 19-10 cushion. Westminster wouldn’t be able to get closer than 24-20 and dropped the third set 25-20. Marchant came alive for the Griffins in the fourth set. She posted seven kills in the stanza and hit .500 on 10 swings. The Griffins would trail early in the frame 5-1 and later at 11-6. They would eventually even the score at 14-14 and take a lead of 15-14.

Michelle Hardy played at a junior college and shares the setting with Ross. King augments the back-row play with freshmen Krumm and Lobnitz in the middle, and Courtney working on the right side. “It’s been fun watching our young middles — Korey and Emily — through the season, getting better and figuring the college game out,” Tobin said. “I think our constants have been our back row — Allyse and Kirstin — with their passing and defense. King “Physically, Lacey is better, but not 100 percent. She’s being crafty and smart, but you have to have the heat or the defense knows how to play your finesse shot. It’s tough coming off of surgery.” The attitude, though, remains positive, the coach said. “The players are holding their heads up,” she said. “They’re very positive because they believe in what this team can be. “Because of that, we are going to win some matches.”

Ready ... Continued from Page D7 The coach, who hasn’t experienced a whole lot of losing as a player or assistant, said players could easily start jumping ship from a 1-5 team. “The seniors are maintaining a positive attitude. That has really trickled down even into our young guys, our redshirts and our scout guys, who are still bringing a lot of energy to practice,” he said. “It’s awesome.” Eastern Oregon is trying to snap a two-game losing streak that put a halt to the Mountaineers’ red-hot start. Eastern was blown out at home by Rocky Mountain before falling at Southern Oregon in a non-conference game last week. Morrell said the two losses do not mean the Mountaineers forgot how to play. “Southern Oregon, and I’ve stood right by this claim since the day we played them, they’re a very good football team. They’re a challenge to match up against,” Morrell said. “I don’t think I was shocked by that one at all. I knew Southern would certainly be able to play with them.” The Battlin’ Bears, Morrell said, are the real deal. “Rocky just really got the turnover thing going. Momentum really built in that game really rapidly,” he said. “Rocky is a quality ball club, too. It’s not like they’re turning around and losing to slouches.” The Orediggers are back on the road next week when they play MSU-Northern in Havre. Tech is back at home the following week, when Rocky Mountain comes to town.

Mountaineers have forced 15 turnovers in six games. Senior linebacker Marc-Avery Aiarhart and sophomore defensive back Nick Magrone each have two interceptions. Aiarhart is also tied for tops in the conference with 9.8 tackles per game. Junior linebacker Howard McDonald adds 8.2 tackles per game, while junior defensive lineman Mike Goings leads the Frontier in forced fumbles.

Stopping ... Continued from Page D5 Tech is hopeful that hard-hitting Jake Helbling can return from injury after missing two games. If they want to stop their five-game losing streak, the Orediggers need all hands on deck Saturday. Here’s some more key factors to keep your eye on Saturday in La Grande:

SPOILER ROLE The Orediggers (1-5, 0-5) badly want to win Saturday. The Mountaineers (4-2, 4-1) have to. While a loss won’t end end Eastern Oregon’s hopes of winning the Frontier Conference title, it might mean the Mountaineers won’t make the playoff if they finish second. Eastern enters the game reeling after losses to Rocky and Southern Oregon spoiled a 4-0 start. The Orediggers have to hit the Mountaineers while their down. The best way to do that is to take an early lead, and the Mountaineers have been vulnerable in the early going lately. EOU has been outscored 131-102 in the first half of games this season. The Mountaineers are 2-2 when trailing at the half this season. They’re 7-12 when losing at the half in four years under head coach Tim Camp.

MISTAKES The Orediggers have made too many crucial

FIELD POSITION mistakes to win this season. Tech is a league-worst minus six in the turnover margin. The Orediggers have turned the ball over 16 times in six games — five fumbles lost and 12 interceptions. Four of those turnovers have resulted in touchdowns by the opposing defense. Others helped set up scores. The Orediggers must win the turnover battle if things are going to turn around in the second half of the season. Tech’s offense has showed flashes of brilliance. Behind a rotating line led by Drew Waltee, Matt Study and Keith Mullan, Pat Hansen has went off for more than 100 yards three times. He nearly went for 200 one game. Sophomore quarterback Brian Schwarzkoph and the no-huddle attack has been up and down. Receivers Trent Thomas, Craig Halko, James Roberts and tight end Leif Knatterud have been solid in Tech’s controlled passing game. Saturday will be a test for that unit. Eastern is plus four in the turnover margin. The

Oredigger opponents have had terrific starting position all year. The turnovers have played a major role in that. Tech, though, has also struggled with short kickoffs and inconsistent punting. Freshman Zach Reisenauer, who missed the first part of the season with a badly broken ankle, kicked off for the first time two weeks ago against Montana Western in Dillon. The result wasn’t what Tech coach Chuck Morrell was looking for, but the coach expects Reisenaur’s strength to improve week to week. Freshman punter Travis Farewell has boomed some big kicks. He needs to be more consistent, though, to help out the Tech defense. Over the next few years, the Oredigger kicking game could very well be a team strength. During the first half of the season, though, it was sub-par. Eastern Oregon, meanwhile, is fourth in the NAIA in yards per punt. Tech hasn’t won the field position battle all season. If the Orediggers could just break even in that category Saturday, the long bus ride home from Eastern Oregon could be a happy one.

THE MONTANA STANDARD, BUTTE, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2011 D13

Study ... Continued from Page D4 In his second-to-last prep football game, Study was part of the Kalispell squad that beat Butte High 28-14 in a Class AA playoff game at Bulldog Memorial Stadium. The quarterback of that Braves team was Brock Osweiler, who is now the starting quarterback at Arizona State. The next day, Study watched Montana Tech play Carroll College at Alumni Coliseum as part of a recruiting trip. He decided right then he was an Oredigger. “I talked to Rocky a little bit, and Western and the Cats a little bit,” Study says. “Tech just fit. I came on a recruiting trip to a Tech-Carroll game and I was just sold. I just liked the atmosphere here. I like the people and the school, as far as placement goes, is unbeatable, especially with the cost. So it was pretty clear to me.” In the classroom, Study lives up to the way his name is usually mispronounced. Study, who has a 3.4 GPA, already has an associate’s degree in construction technology. He’ll finish his degree in business management in May. On Tuesday, Study spent the day in Seattle interviewing with a construction company about a superintendent position. “That’s what I’m looking into doing,” he says. Judging by his play on the field, a superintendent job would be a fitting one. Study has been a key player and a leader on the Montana Tech offensive line almost since he first stepped on campus. Study started every game during his junior season and most of the games of his sophomore season at left guard. Before that, Study filled in at just about every other position on the offensive line. When Chuck Morrell took over as Tech coach last offseason, the new coaching

staff moved Study to right tackle. “They wanted to get the two most athletic out on the edges,” Study says. That plan worked to perfection as the Orediggers and Pat Hansen ran all over Southern Oregon’s defense in the opener. After losses to Eastern Oregon and MSU-Northern — and a rash of injuries — the Orediggers decided to move Study back to left tackle, where he’d once again play next to left tackle Drew Waltee. “Some of that was since me and Drew have been meshing together for three years, and they wanted to get us back on the same side,” Study says. “A lot of (playing offensive line) is knowing who’s next to you. Part of it was to get us meshing together again, and we’ve obviously got some players who can play on the edge as well.” Switching sides, which means you have to switch hands you put on the ground in your three-point stance, wasn’t a problem for Study, who is left handed. “My first couple of years I was kind of a utility player,” he says. “I’d play left, right, whatever. It didn’t matter. So I got used to having whichever hand down.” In fact, Study actually helps teach younger players how to adjust to switching hands when he helps Braves coach Russell McCarvel during summer camps. “Having kids put down their other hand is just like night and day,” Study says. “They just can’t figure it out.” The adjustment to Tech’s new no-huddle defense hasn’t been too troublesome, either, Study says. “It’s quite a bit different, but I haven’t really thought about it much because it’s been like that since the first practice of spring ball,” he says. “It would be weird to huddle now.” What Study says he can’t quite figure out is why the Orediggers have lost five straight. “It’s one of those things when you’ve got a bunch of new guys who are all new to

Study ... Continued from Page D13 the whole college football thing,” Study says, referring to the large number of true freshman playing major roles this season. “Everybody is new to the program. It’s not really an excuse at this point because we’ve all been through it, it’s just one of those transition kind of deals. “We plan on getting it the whole second half of the season and winning out.”

Study says the new program and new new players just needed a little bit of time. He hopes that time is up. Actually, he’s counting on it. “Chuck is an awesome coach. He knows the game like I’ve never seen before. Same with a lot of the coaches he brought in,” Study says. “Everything might not click in that first year, but I have no doubt that things are going to get better in the future. “For the rest of this year, things are going to get better.”
