BY BILL FOLEY of The Montana Standard
Pat Hansen is a bit of a running back historian. “I’ve watched every running back from Walter Payton to the guys nowadays,” the Montana Tech redshirt freshman says. “I studied all of them.” Hansen, the starting tailback for the Orediggers, also knows the history of the position he’s playing at Montana Tech. He knows all about the legendary Don Heater, the man who ran for a schoolrecord 4,385 yards from 1968-1971. He knows all about Jay LeProwse, who led the Frontier Conference in rushing four straight seasons (19982001). He knows he’d like to someday be mentioned in the same name as the Oredigger greats.

Tech, Western battle for VB bragging rights Bulldogs play host to Orediggers Nov. 2 at Straugh Gymnasium BY BRUCE SAYLER of The Montana Standard
The championship of the neighborhood is up for grabs. The possibliltiy hasn’t been so true in recent years as it is this season in Frontier Conference college women’s volleyball in relation to Montana Tech and Montana Western. When the Orediggers and the Bulldogs tangle at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 2, it will be the rubber match of the series this season. Two previous matches were played between them in Butte. Montana Tech won the first one, a non-conference match, and then Montana Western came back in a fury to topple the Orediggers in a conference counter. This, too, will be in conference play, but will be the first of the three meetings of 2011 to be played in Dillon. The Straugh Gym on the Western campus will be the venue.
Both teams and their head coaches have seen their frustrations. Both coaches have maintained an even-keel persona through it all. Injuries have shackled the Orediggers. Transition has been a theme to Western’s season, though not so much in a bad way. Both squads look to be playing their best volleyball as the season winds down, meaning they both could be dangerous at the coming league tournament in Helena. Going into this week, Western had one conference win and Montana Tech had not won a league match. The Orediggers are coached by Marilyn Tobin, a 22-year veteran at the helm, and she has had to show a lot of adaptibility and solicit it from the players, so many of whom have performed in
roles they did not necessarily sign up to play. Lately, the group has become more reliable and athletic. Shersteen Cline is one of the more powerful hitters in the conference. Freshman Korey Krumm moved to the outside hitter spot and Katie Petteys, a good server, was inserted at middle blocker. Veteran Lacey Phelan has been getting better swings as she steadily recovers from offseason shoulder surgery. She plays on the outside, and true freshman Emily Lobnitz is becoming a force in the middle. Kiara Ross and Michelle Hardy share setting duties. Kendra Lyons provides a lift off the bench, now mostly on the front row. Kirstin King is one of the best on serve-receive and libero Allyse
Cruise has had a very good season. Alex Courtney brings a tough serve to the court. Lisa Griffiths is in her first year as head coach of Western and looks to have the Bulldogs pointed toward future success. A first year is always a trial for a new coach and inherited roster. Both elements have adjusted well. Griffiths hasn’t just looked for and played the players she was able to bring to the campus so far, but has also spotted the talents of those on the existing roster and put them to good use. Kayla Schmid, a senior, has especially shined for the team. Susanne Rehse, in the middle, is also a standout as is libero Shelby Mack.Charelle Minor is strong in the middle and Bailey Branson brings more whip to the hitter’s spot. Setter Paige Latimore is only a freshman and has adapted well to the college game. Jessica Brunett, Breanne Kelley and Emily Erickson are young players who have shown bursts of potential throughout the schedule.

’Diggers look to duplicate effort Montana Tech produced 505 yards of offense in last game vs. Rocky BY BILL FOLEY of The Montana Standard
The last time Montana Tech played Rocky Mountain College, the Battlin’ Bears won 44-37 at Herb Klindt Field in Billings. Rocky turned four Oredigger turnovers into 24 points on that Sept. 17 day. The Orediggers saw a 22-7 lead late in the second quarter turn into a heart-wrenching loss. Still, the Orediggers would like to duplicate most of what they did in Billings that day. Tech outgained Rocky 505-389. Pat Hansen ran for 143 yards on 28 carries, and sophomore quarterback Brian Schwarzkoph had perhaps his best day as a college player, passing for 278 yards. He also ran for 76 yards.
Schwarzkoph hit Craig Halko five times for 137 yards and three touchdowns. He also found James Roberts and Trent Thomas five times each. The Orediggers sacked Rocky quarterback Bryce Baker five times. Connor O’Neill got him three times, even though official stats didn’t recognize that. Joe Semansky and Marcus Johnson also registered a sack. In short, take away four turnovers, and the Orediggers dominated Rocky that day. That has to give the struggling Orediggers (1-7, 0-7) confidence Saturday as they play host to No. 24 Rocky (5-3, 4-3). If Montana Tech can come close to duplicating all the good things it did in the loss to Rocky, the Orediggers have a good chance of celebrating a victory Saturday afternoon.
Here’s some more matchups to keep your eye on Saturday:
STOPING A.J. Levi Sutton caught 11 passes for 63 yards last time the Orediggers and Bears met. It was A.J. Tolbert, though, who sank the Orediggers. Tolbert caught a pair of touchdown passes in the crucial final 3 minutes of the first half. The 6-4, 220-pound Tolbert used his size and superb athletic ability to outmatch the Tech defenders on both players. “He’s as tough a matchup as any wide receiver you’re going to see at this level,” Tech coach Chuck Morrell said. “You watch him on film, he catches that ball, and if he’s in open space I have yet to see anybody run him down.”

Gridders prepare for pink The Montana Tech Orediggers football team is tough enough to wear pink. Are you? The Montana Tech football team will be sporting some different colors this weekend in addition to their normal green and white. Promoting cancer awareness for the American Cancer Society, the Tech players will be wearing different types of pink flare for their game against Rocky Mountain College. The fans will be able to dress up, too. Digger Athletics Association will be selling pink items at Alumni Coliseum to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Digger Athletics Association is setting up a fund to distribute the proceeds to families in need in the Butte area. If you are opposed to wearing pink, you can make a donation at the game to the Digger Athletics Association that will be added to the fund. Tailgate starts at 11 a.m. at Alumni Coliseum on Saturday. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.

Orediggers returning home Tech football playing at Alumni Coliseum after month-long road stint BY BILL FOLEY of The Montana Standard
The Montana Tech football team will play at home for the first time in more than a month Saturday when they play host to No. 24 Rocky Mountain College. Kickoff for the Frontier Conference game is at 1 p.m. at Alumni Coliseum. The Orediggers will have a newlook Saturday, and it has nothing to do with the unfamiliar Green home jerseys. Tech will don several pink items as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. (See sidebar.) “We got a whole box of stuff,” Tech coach Chuck Morrell said. “It should be a pretty cool deal. We’ve got the gloves, the socks, the mouth pieces, the whole deal. No pink jerseys, though.”
The Bears (5-3, 4-3) are clinging to their slim playoff chances. The Orediggers (1-7, 0-7) are hoping the new look will bring them some new luck. Tech is trying to snap a seven-game losing streak that dates back to the Aug. 27 seasonopening win over Southern Oregon. Tech hasn’t played at Alumni since a Sept. 24 loss to Carroll College. “It’s great for us to be back at home and playing on our home field,” Morrell said. “It will be great to be back home. I know our

guys are excited.” The coach said he could tell by Wednesday’s practice that his team is ready to avenge its 44-37 loss at Rocky on Sept. 17. “It’s a great opportunity here with Rocky being a ranked team coming into our place,” he said. “We know we had some opportunities competing against them the first time. Matchup-wise, we feel we have the ability to give our selves the opportunity to have a chance to win at the end of the game, which is something we ask the guys to

do every week.” Morrell said turnovers and finishing drives on offense is the key to victory. “I’m really starting to feel good about our ability to move the football,” he said. “It’s one thing to move it, and another to put it in the end zone. “We’ve got to be able to finish our drives in the red zone. We’ve got to be able to get points every time we get down there.” Limiting Rocky’s big-play capability is also big, Morrell said, pointing to the Bears’ opportunistic defense and top-notch return game. “Within each part of their special teams, offense and defense, they’ve got the ability to make plays with all their units,” he said. The Orediggers hit the road next week to play Carroll in Helena. They then close out the season Nov. 12 at home against Montana Western.

Tech spikers drop pair in Frontier play The Montana Tech Lady Orediggers fell to Westminster in three games, 2325, 21-25, 13-25. Playing at the Behnken Field House on the Westminster campus, Tech played the first two sets close but just couldn’t keep the momentum going. Shersteen Cline and Emily Lobnitz had eight kills apiece. They combined for 53 total attempts on the night. Lobnitz, a freshman from Sunnyvale, Texas, hit for a .143 hitting efficiency and had one block. Lewis-Clark State beat Montana Tech 25-14, 25-6, 25-17 Saturday. Kelli Tikker and Lauryn Herrick recorded 10 kills apiece and posted several impressive numbers to help the Warriors to their 10th straight win. “We played well at times,” Montana Tech head coach Marilyn Tobin said. “The third game, we played really well the last 10 points of the match. We were passing well, setting well, hitting well and running a quicker offense. We went with a different lineup.” The Orediggers experimented with Korey Krumm on the outside and Katie Petteys in the middle. Petteys had three blocks in doing nice job in the middle. Alexis Aalona killed 11 balls and Emily Atkinson set 34 assists in a three-game match as Westminster prevailed 25-19, 25-16, 25-18 over Montana Western in a Frontier Conference volleyball match Saturday. Ashley Marchant had 17 digs for the Griffins and Aalona scooped 11.
Western was led by Susanne Rehse with four blocks and nine kills. Paige Latimer set 26 assists and Shelby Mack came up with 13 digs. Using big runs and dominating play at the net, the Lewis-Clark State College women’s volleyball team rolled past Montana Western 25-14, 25-13, 25-5 in a Frontier Conference match. Senior outside hitter Lauryn Herrick led the Warriors with seven kills, five service aces, and three digs, while Brianne Brown added six kills and four digs. Nevena Dragovic had 25 assists, five digs, two solo blocks and four block assists, while Kaylee Rector had a team-high eight digs. Kayla Schmid topped the Bulldogs in kills with five and Paige Latimer led the team with 11 assists. Schmid also led the team with nine of the 26 team digs. No. 12 Rocky Mountain swept No. 23 Carroll College 25-19, 25-21, 25-21 in Billings on Friday, behind 10 kills and 15 digs by Sara Brunner. The Saints weren’t too far behind in statistical categories, but coach Moe Boyle said the team lacked competitive fire in the sweep. Rocky beat Carroll 4036 in kills, 68-65 in digs, 36-32 in assists, 8-6 in blocks and 6-3 in aces. “The competitive spirit really went to Rocky,” she said. “That was the disappointing part.” Mo Ritter led the Saints with 14 digs, while three players had seven kills. Tech ... Continued from Page D10 Skylights were on the receiving end of a revenge match as they lost to the UGF Argos in three games, reported George Ferguson of the Havre Daily News. Ferguson wrote the following: “Friday night at the McLaughlin Center in Great Falls. UGF won by scores of 25-21, 25-23 and 25-20, avenging Northern’s five-set win last month in Havre. “I thought we served and passed well enough to stay in the match, but we didn’t hit the ball well at all Friday night,” MSU-N head coach Bill Huebsch said. “That was reflected in our statistics in how many players took swings and us not scoring. Against Great Falls, a very good team, when you have an opportunity to score you have to do that, and we certainly did not do that.”
Games were close and the Skylights did have chances, but like Huebsch said, MSU-N didn’t put points away well enough in crucial times. UGF had 44 kills to Northern’s 22 and the Argos also totaled 10 blocks. “I thought we had chances to win some of those sets, but we just couldn’t put the ball away.” Huebsch said. “That is a credit to their defense, they played very well, but I thought we had our chances. It was 2121 in the first and we got outscored 4-0 to finish the set. Then we were up 2322 in the second set and we got outscored 3-0 to end that set. We were definitely in position to win those two sets, but we just couldn’t put the ball away.’ Sierra Diehl paced the Skylights with six kills while Kelsey Williams had 13 digs. As a team, Northern totaled seven blocks. Taylor Lucero had a match-high 14 kills for the Argos.

NEW QUARTERBACK?
Baker, who played a little running back this season, is also one of the fastest players on the team. He could definitely be a matchup problem for the Rocky defense.
Schwarzkoph, who banged up his hand Saturday in Havre, hasn’t been ruled out of playing Saturday, and he practiced on Wednesday. If he can’t go, however, look for sophomore Nick Baker to take his place. The Lake Stevens, Wash., native played well after Schwarzkoph exited the game in the second quarter. Schwarzkoph actually hurt his hand on the game’s second play. He stayed in the game and tried to gut it out. The left-handed quarterback came to Tech as a highly-touted prospect. He was named one of Washington’s top 100 recruits by The Seattle Times, and The Everett Herald selected him as an AllArea Offensive Player of the Year. He threw for 2,785 yards and 30 touchdowns while completing 66 percent of his passes his senior year in high school. Baker narrowly lost out to Schwarzkoph in training camp battle for the starting job. In Havre, Baker completed 12 of 27 passes for 170 yards and three touchdowns. He was picked off once.
Tech might not be the only quarterback with a Lake Stevens player under center. It’s possible Rocky senior Paxton Paynter could get the start at quarterback for the Bears. Paynter took over for redshirt freshman Bryce Baker in last week’s 23-7 Rocky home win over Montana Western. The 5-10, 190-pound Paynter completed 6 of 10 passes for 48 yards while helping the Bears milk the lead in the second half. Baker left the game with an apparent head injury. If the injury is diagnosed as a concussion, when the quarterback returns is taken out of the hands of the coaches and player. The decision then belongs to Rocky’s medical team. Paynter would be a bit of a mystery for the Orediggers. If nothing else, both teams will have to be ready for more than one quarterback on Saturday. It could also be a big day for the Lake Stevens Vikings.

Bruiser ... Continued from Page D4 “I’d like to be the top back,” Hansen says. “They’ve got some awesome records, but I’d like to beat them all. Hansen is well on his way. The 5-foot-9, 182pound former Ekalaka Bulldog is ranked second in the Frontier Conference and fourth in the NAIA with 855 yards on 184 carries. That’s 4.6 yards per carry. Tech coaches think that number may actualHansen ly be higher given the inconsistency of stat keeping in the Frontier Conference. They’re going through game films to double check. “We think he’s got more than 900 yards,” Tech coach Chuck Morrell said. Hansen burst onto the scene in a big way, doing something Heater nor LeProwse did for the Orediggers. He scored a school-record five touchdowns in Tech’s 50-47 win over Southern Oregon. Somehow, the five scores — including
his 25-yard walkoff jaunt — weren’t the most impressive part of Hansen’s big day. He ran for 195 yards and four touchdowns. He caught six passes for 28 yards and a touchdown. Hansen’s day included a 74-yard run to the Raiders’ 1-yard line, which set up a 1-yard TD plunge by Nick Baker. “That sucked,” Hansen says of getting caught from behind. “I was on the sidelines puking after that one. That was after I hadn’t practiced for a week and a half because of my hamstring. I was way out of shape for that game.” That’s right, Hansen did all that when he wasn’t anywhere near 100 percent. Actually, Hansen’s entire freshman season, as impressive as it has been, has been a giant “what if.” Hansen’s training camp was cut short by a hamstring injury. Then, he injured his other hamstring. When the day likely comes — possibly Saturday — when Hansen passes the 1,000-yard mark, he’ll have done it with the following games on the books: At home against Eastern Oregon: 19 carries, 28 yards. At home against MSU-Northern: five carries, eight yards. At home against Carroll College: 14
carries, 20 yards. In those three games, Hansen clearly didn’t have the same burst he did against Southern Oregon. “I had hamstring problems earlier in the season. I never had hamstring problems before,” Hansen says. “I’m healed up now, finally. That bye week really helped.” Hansen was limited at practice for much of the first half of the season. Coaches didn’t know what they’d get from their back on a day-to-day basis. In between the Northern and Carroll games, Hansen ran for 143 yards against Rocky Mountain College in Billings. “I’m usually a big weight room guy,” Hansen says. “I like to lift with my legs. I wasn’t able to do that during that time.” Now that he’s feeling closer to 100 percent, Hansen racked up 452 yards in his last three games, including 209 yards last week at MSU-Northern. Hansen says he isn’t surprised by the numbers he has put up. “I knew if I got the carries I could do something,” he says. “I worked pretty hard in the offseason. I was just glad to get a starting spot and I wanted to do the most with it.” Hansen, who was an All-State point
guard at Ekalaka, has legs like a speed skater. “You’ve got to have big legs if you’re a little guy like me,” he says. Mixing power with quickness, patience and vision, Hansen’s running style is very similar to his favorite player — a player who happens to be the same height. “I was always a big Emmitt Smith fan growing up,” Hansen says. “I don’t know if my style takes after him or not. It kind of does, I guess. “I’ve always looked up to Emmitt Smith. Anytime the NFL classics are on, I always have to watch the Cowboys.” Hansen leads the league in the unofficial stat how-did-he-do-that runs, disappearing into a pile of bodies before breaking out for a big run. “You have to have great vision. That’s the most important thing,” he says. “You definitely have to be patient. Once you have the smallest crease, you have to get through it. I just try to use my quickness and my power to my advantage, I guess.” Hansen has the power to run over defenders, the agility to make them miss and the burst to run by them. His running style helps him avoid

Bruiser ... Continued from Page D13 direct hits. “You kind of have to when you’re a little guy like me,” Hansen says with a laugh. “A lot of times if you can just slip to the side a little bit and get them in an arm tackle, you’re gone. I try to do that.” Hansen grew up on a ranch about 30 miles from Ekalaka, which is a stone’s throw from where Montana meets North Dakota and South Dakota. He wasn’t heavily recruited out of high school, despite his three All-State awards and four all-conference mentions. Hansen, who played running back for two years before switching to quarterback, was elected team MVP twice. The Bulldogs played 8-man football then. They’ve since dropped down to 6man. Hansen talked to South Dakota School of Mines, Dickinson State, Rocky and Tech. He was sold on Tech when then coach Bob Green showed up at his house, some 485 miles from campus. “He made the drive down there; I’m glad he did,” Hansen says. “His car
actually broke down when he came to recruit me. He got done talking to me, he went outside and his car wouldn’t start.” Green got his car running, and the Orediggers had their future running back — although, they announced his signing as a defensive back. “A combination of academics and athletics,” Hansen says of his reason for picking Tech. “I really liked the school, and I really wanted to play football up here with a bunch of Montana kids. “It was a pretty clear choice for me.” Hansen, the salutatorian of the Carter County High School class of 2010, is studying mining engineering. Hansen’s parents, Vic and Leigh, have been able to make the long drive to Butte for their son’s games. Their first trip was for the 2010 Bob Cleverley All-Star game at Alumni Coliseum, when Hansen returned a touchdown and punt for a touchdown to earn offensive MVP honors in the Blue team’s victory. “That was a fun game,” Hansen says. “That was a blast.” Now that he’s able to play on that field full-time, Hansen has had mixed emotions. He’s on the verge of a 1,000-yard

season, but the Orediggers are in the midst of a seven-game losing streak. “It sucks. I hate losing,” he says. “After I get over the fact that we lost. I look at the stats and watch film and see I did what I could have done, then I feel better. “I definitely don’t like losing, though.” Hansen is part of the future that hopes to turn that losing around. Lost in all the losses is the experience gained by the young players. When these Orediggers grow up, watch out.
“I don’t know if I like looking at it like that or not. I’m kind of a right-now guy,” Hansen says. “Looking at it logically, that’s how it is. I’m excited about our future. There’s a lot of guys who are going to be studs.” Hansen is already one of them. Even in a losing season, he’s already having Oredigger fans whisper the names of greats like Heater and LeProwse. “I want to do the most with this opportunity that I have, for sure,” Hansen says. “I want to rack up some numbers like that.”
