Hard work BY BILL FOLEY of The Montana Standard
athan Kobold never had to search very far for inspiration. He had a role model who gave him a true understanding of hard work living under the same roof — his mom. Kobold was raised by a single mother, Michelle Marker, and he noticed that her life wasn’t exactly an easy one. “I remember when she was working three jobs,” Kobold says. “I used to have to stay at my friend’s house on Thursday nights because she was working late.” Kobold used that same work ethic to become a key contributor in Montana Tech’s revamped defense. Tech coach Chuck Morrell calls Kobold a “365-day-a-year guy.” “Some guys are blessed with different talents, and really his talent is how tough minded he is,” Morrell says. “It doesn’t matter if it is Feb. 22 or Sept. 1, his effort level is the exact same.”
N
Work ethic pays off for Montana Tech safety
With one game left, Kobold is ranked No. 9 in the Frontier Conference in tackles, averaging 7.2 take downs per game. The junior safety also has an interception and a fumble recovery for the Orediggers. That’s not bad for a player who came to town as a walk-on. “I come from a single mother. I had to get a scholarship if I wanted to go five years of school,” Kobold Kobold says. After a couple years on campus, Kobold finally got that scholarship with the Orediggers. “Coach (Bob) Green saw I was working hard, and I know I earned it,” Kobold says. “I know I worked hard.” Kobold signed with the Orediggers in February 2008 after a solid senior season at Billings West.
Kobold earned All-State honorable mention honors at outside linebacker while helping the Golden Bears advance to the Class AA state championship game, where they lost to Helena Capital. He played outside linebacker for the Orediggers. After playing special teams as a redshirt freshman in 2009, Kobold split time at outside linebacker last season. He made 32 tackles in part-time duty. With the coaching change came a change of positions for Kobold. It was a change Kobold welcomed. “It’s a new scheme, and it’s a better fit for me,” he says of playing safety instead of linebacker. “It was different at first, for sure. But coach Morrell is a great coach. He helped me out. He’s a secondary guy. He’s a safety guy, really.” Morrell marvels at how well Kobold adjusted to the new position. “That’s a big change,” the coach says. Kobold started all 10 games for the Orediggers. He’ll start No. 11 Saturday

D6 THE MONTANA STANDARD, BUTTE, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2011
Tech’s ‘Super Bowl’ is Saturday BY BILL FOLEY of The Montana Standard
For the Montana Tech football team, Oct. 1 represented rock bottom. The Orediggers surrendered 42 second-half points and watched as their 16-7 lead turned into a 55-16 loss at Dillon’s Vigilante Field. The loss was the fifth straight for the Orediggers, who fell to 1-5 overall and 0-5 in Frontier Conference play. Making the loss even tougher to take was that Tech didn’t play another game until two weeks later because of the week off. Six weeks later, the Orediggers are out for a little redemption as the they take on the Bulldogs at noon at Alumni Coliseum. “That almost seems like it was a season ago that that happened,” Tech coach Chuck Morrell said. “There’s a lot of changes that have happened within framework of this team since that happened. “We feel like we’re a better ball club. We’re not perfect, but we’ve improved since that point.” Morrell told his team this is their “Super Bowl” because it’s their last game until late August or early September of 2012. A win would show the rest of the conference just how much Tech has improved as the season went on. It would also show the Bulldogs that they didn’t see the best of the Orediggers on Oct. 1. “That’s what we talked about all week,” Morrell said. “A lot of our guys have brought that up that we want to stay focused and locked in for four
Your
quarters.” The game has meaning in the standings, as well. At 1-8 in conference and 2-8 overall, the Orediggers currently occupy the basement of the Frontier Conference. Western is 2-7 and 2-8. A Bulldog win would leave the Orediggers alone in last place. Throw in the fact that the two teams have never liked each other, and you have the makings of an entertaining college football game. “We really feel like it will spring board us into our offseason,” Morrell said. “We feel like this is as big as any game we played this season. Our guys have been preparing that way all week.” Here are some other storylines to keep an eye on Saturday at Alumni Coliseum.
WESTERN SCREENS The Bulldogs burned the Orediggers repeatedly with the screen passes. Tech will need to do a better job stopping that if the Orediggers want to win Saturday. “That was our entire focus going into the last game,” Morrell said. “Honestly, we couldn’t have played worse against the screen game.” Sophomore running back T.J. Leep scored on a 20-yard screen. He also set up a run with a 73-yard reception on a screen. “They have the ability to get the ball out quick, so it’s difficult to get pressure on them,” Morrell said. “We’ve got to

really work on bottling up their screen game.”
WHICH QB? Both teams enter the game with question at quarterback. Tech’s Nick Baker will start his third straight game in place of injured Brian Schwarzkoph. Schwarzkoph practiced during the week, but his availability Saturday is unknown. He injured his hand Oct. 22 at MSUNorthern. The Orediggers are also preparing to face two quarterbacks — senior Zach McRae or junior Jeff Logan. Western coach Ryan Nourse said McRae will start. However, the former Dillon Beaver has missed time lately with another in a string of concussions. Morrell said he was impressed with McRae, who threw for 334 yards against Tech in October. “He played really, really, really well,” Morrell said. “He’s a heck of a player.” Logan threw for 134 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s 54-13 loss to Eastern Oregon. “They’re not night-and-day type of different,” Morrell said of Western’s quarterbacks. “They’ve got very similar styles. “Logan is probably a little bit more pocket oriented and works through his progressions a little more. “The one thing that Zach has done is get out with his feet at times. He hurt us with the run last time.” The Bulldogs always have a bunch of
good receivers. Last week, junior Rashad Peniston caught five passes for 101 yards. He hauled in a 49-yard touchdown pass. “He can really stretch the defense vertically,” Morrell said. “They’re balanced too. They’ve got a good running back (Charlie Dotson). Their run helps set up a lot of their passing game. Their run sets up their screens and their playaction passing.”
CHECKED OUT? After the Senior Day loss to Eastern Oregon, disappointed Nourse said his team wasn’t 100 percent in the game. “I felt like some of our guys have already checked out mentally,” the coach said. “It takes 11 guys playing. If you only have seven guys going hard, it won’t work. “Eastern Oregon obviously wants to keep playing. They’re working together like a team should. This is the toughest conference in the nation, and we’re not ready to compete at this level yet.” Nourse pointed to a couple of players who were definitely bringing it all game. “Charlie Dotson is a warrior,” Nourse said. “He and guys like (defensive lineman) Trent Mallory battled hard today. It’s guys like that who are going to help us turn the corner here.” The game will be the last for Western seniors McRae, Mallory, Dotson, Scott Keiter-Charles, Deryk Van Zee, Colton Woods, Donte Green, Micah Mamiya, Lihikai Domingo, Mike Gallagher and Penisoni Tuifua. Those 11 players certainly want to go out with a win. They’ll need the rest of the team giving it their all for that to happen.

’Diggers look to send seniors out in style BY BILL FOLEY of The Montana Standard
Nine Montana Tech football players will put on their pads and green jerseys for the last time Saturday. The Orediggers want to make sure they remember it for a lifetime. Montana Tech plays host to Montana Western at noon at Alumni Coliseum. The game is the season finale for both teams, and the Orediggers will honor their nine seniors in a pregame ceremony. Tech’s seniors are Connor O’Neill, Clay McQueary, Kevin Schey, Logan Ledgerwood, Daniel Chandler, Matt Matosich, Drew Waltee, Marcus Johnson and Matt Study. The Orediggers, who are coming off a 28-14 loss at Carroll College, are planning on sending those guys off in style. “That’s the first thing we said after the Carroll game,” Tech coach Chuck Morrell said. “Obviously, it was a disappointing loss for us. But the first thing we said to our guys is to do everything in our power to let our seniors finish their careers with a ‘W.’” The Orediggers are 2-8 overall and 18 in Frontier Conference play in Morrell’s first season. Morrell said his Orediggers have built a foundation for future success this season, however. He said he couldn’t have done that without his seniors leading the way. “I can’t emphasize the level of respect I have for these guys,” Morrell said. “It’s not the easiest thing to go through a program transition. They’ve been tremendous leaders for us the whole season.” Morrell said the losses didn’t deter the determination of his seniors one bit.
“I can’t emphasize the level of respect I have for these guys. It’s not the easiest thing to go through a program transition. They’ve been tremendous leaders for us the whole season.” Oredigger coach Chuck Morrell
“It would be so easy in that situation for them to just back down, to give up on it, and they haven’t for one second,” he said. “Being a small group, they’ve been a crucial role in the success that we did have during the season.” During the Orediggers’ week off in the middle of the season Morrell met with his seniors. “I told them I want them to come back to this program three or four years from now when all these young guys that they mentored have moved to the point of being very good college football players,” Morrell said. “I want for them to say then ‘I had a lot to do with where this program is at.’” Several players decided to walk away from the program after coach Bob Green retired after 24 years. Morrell said that made him appreciate the seniors that stuck it out all the more. “I have zero complaints about them the whole time. They have been nothing short of phenomenal,” the coach said. “As difficult as this transition has been with all the young guys and all the new guys and the injuries and everything we’ve dealt with this year, it wouldn’t even compare if I didn’t have those guys.”

Frontier Volleyball season looks to tourney time Montana Western came back from a two-game deficit and finished off its regular-season volleyball schedule night with a 21-25, 20-25, 25-18, 25-15, 15-9 win over rival Montana Tech in Frontier Conference action. It was the last regular-season match for both teams. The Frontier Conference teams are currently competing in the league tournament in Helena. “We were down two games,” Western head coach Lisa Griffiths said. “Unforced errors doomed us in the first two games. Then game three came and I knew the seniors weren’t done. They were ready to go out right on their home floor. “We corrected our unforced error issue and were able to take those games fairly handily.” Bulldog seniors Kayla Schmid and Susanne Rehse combined for 25 of the team’s 54 kills. Schmid also had 14 digs and Rehse blocked a couple of Montana Tech shots and aced three serves. “We won the first two games and I felt we executed our gameplan fairly well
wit our blocking schemes and hitting schemes,” Montana Tech head coach Marilyn Tobin said. “We came out flat in the third game and shot ourselves in the foot. “We had 37 hitting errors for the match and that’s a lot of points for the other team. A huge factor was the hitting percentages. Theirs were all positives and several of ours were negatives.” Western hit .208 as a team, led by freshman Emily Erickson at .471 with seven kills. The Orediggers hit .081. Shersteen Cline, however, led all spikers with 17 kills and Emily Lobnitz pounded 10. Montana Tech libero Allyse Cruise had 20 digs. She also fired three service aces. “Our seniors led us tonight,” Griffiths said. “They’re everything we want University of Montana Western volleyball to be. Kayla and Susie played great.

Emily Erickson is only a freshman and I can’t wait to see how far she will go.” Tobin noticed their play, too. “Emily Erickson really sparked their team in hitting,” the Oredigger coach said. “We couldn’t stop her. Adn we had a hard time getting the ball over the net on our side. “It was frustrating after winning the first two games. On the positive side, we outblocked them 5-4 and I felt we had some nice blocks.” The Westminster College women’s volleyball team gave No. 8 Lewis-Clark State everything it could handle before dropping a 3-1 decision on in the Behnken Field House. The final match of the regular season saw Westminster drop a 22-25, 23-25, 25-23, 18-25 match. Westminster posted 49 kills on the night with a .161 hitting efficiency They were aggressive most of the night and
the 49 kills are the second-most the team has recorded in a four-set match this season. The Griffins also racked up four service aces and 59 digs. They had seven blocks on defense and forced LCSC into 22 hitting errors. Ashley Marchant was the only Griffin to record double figures in kills with 13. Stephanie Jones Morin and Kenzie Mitchell add nine kills apiece. Katie Vance hit .400 with six kills and Jenna Harp hit .556 and also had six kills. It was the final home match in the career of Harp along with Becky Burke and Katy Waldie. The opening set was tightly contested throughout with seven ties and five lead changes. LCSC finished with 16 kills in the set and hit .294. Westminster managed just 11 kills and a .156 hitting efficiency. The griffins kept it tight thanks to three service aces and two blocks. Westminster jumped out to a quick 6-2 in the second stanza. The Griffins would play ahead in much of the set before the visitors from Idaho would

The Warriors finished set two with 16 kills and hitting .282. The third set was the craziest of the season for the Griffins. Westminster dominated the early portion and built a 15-4 lead at one point. LCSC would fight back behind an 8-0 run during the middle of the set to level the score at 1818. The Griffins wouldn’t give up the lead and eventually held on for the 25-23 victory. Both team struggled in the set with Westminster hitting just .083 with 13 kills while LCSC had 11 kills and hit .047. LCSC started fast in the fourth set and quickly built a 13-6 advantage. Westminster would chip away throughout the set, but they couldn’t get closer than 21-17. The Warriors hit a blistering .321 in the final frame behind 13 kills. The Griffins would collect 10 kills in the set with a .129 hitting efficiency. With Carroll College’s Maureen Frauenholtz making saves all over the court to keep the ball in play, the Saints’

Work ... Continued from Page D5 Not only has Kobold started every game, he’s played in nearly every defensive play. “He’s just a super durable guy,” Morrell says. “He’s been a rock the entire season.” So far, Kobold has 72 tackles, 34 of which are solo. He reached double digits in tackles four times, including a season-high 13 Sept. 17 at Rocky Mountain College. “I hustle, man. That’s what it is,” Kobold says. “That’s what got me here.” Kobold says he has to work hard because at 5-foot11, 185 pounds — “190 on a good day,” he says — he isn’t he biggest player on the field. He also isn’t the fastest. “I have to focus on my footwork and stuff because I don’t have the speed,” he says, before pointing out that he’s also not slow. “I’m fine, but I don’t run like 4.5.” Kobold says he applies the traits he learned from a wrestling career that took him to the Class AA state tournament four years. He placed fourth at 160 pounds as a senior. “I was a wrestler my whole life,” he says. “I planned on wrestling in college up until after my senior year in football. “My work ethic, I give that all to wrestling,” Kobold says. “If I didn’t wrestle, I wouldn’t be here today.” Kobold is majoring in applied health science. graduation, he says he might get a master’s degree in exercise science. “I’d like to be a strength and conditioning coach,” he says. “I’d like to do that or do something in the hospital like cardiac rehab. Something around fitness and health.” Kobold is close to two role models as far as his future plans are concerned. Assistant coach B.J. Campbell has taken strength and conditioning training to new heights at Tech. Kobold likes Campbell’s hands-on approach. “Coach Campbell’s got us doing all sorts of stuff,” Kobold says. “He works on our form and technique. Before you did it (worked out) yourself. He’s in there blowing the whistle, timing us.” Kobold’s advisor is John Amtmann, a professor in applied heath science who also teaches courses in judo, jiu-jitsu, strength training for fitness, whitewater kayaking, yoga, rock climbing and backpacking. “He’s awesome,” Kobold said of Amtmann. “I

learned a lot from him.” Kobold didn’t go to Tech for the degree, but it seems to fit him naturally. “I walked on, so I can’t say a scholarship brought me here,” he says. “Just football, really.” The Orediggers have one more football game this season. A playoff berth went out the window long ago as the young Orediggers struggled to a seven-game losing streak. The Orediggers will honor their group of nine seniors before the game. “I love the seniors,” Kobold says. “I live with Kevin Schey, so I’ve been hanging out with these guys for a while. It’s going to be tough to see them go, but they put in their time.” While they only have one second-half win to show for it so far, the Orediggers have been much improved since the mid-season week off. Morrell’s 3-4 defense has shown signs of what is promised to be a dominant unit down the line. “We’re finally getting it down,” Kobold says. “I can feel it. I think everyone else sees it, too. “We’re playing faster and more confident.” That has Kobold already looking forward to his second season at Montana Tech. He figures another offseason of hard work will make the difference. “We have high expectations already for us next year,” Kobold says. “You’ve got to get knocked down first before you can get up.”

A look at the 2011 Montana Tech seniors ■ Connor O’Neill is a 6-foot, 205-pound linebacker from Butte. The Butte High product led the Orediggers with 55 tackles last season. This year, O’Neill, a team captain, is tied for first in the Frontier Conference in tackles for O’Neill a loss. He had an interception return for a touchdown in each of the last two seasons. ■ Clay McQueary is a 5-9, 160-pound receiver from Butte. The Butte Central graduate had his junior and senior seasons cut short by injures. He caught a career-high six passes for 111 yards Sept. 10 against MSUNorthern. That included McQueary a 49-yard touchdown. McQueary then missed the rest of the season with a wrist injury.
■ Kevin Schey is a 6foot, 235-pound linebacker from Billings. A captain, the Billings West product is a three-year starter for the Orediggers. Schey ranked second on the team in tackles as a junior. He registered at Schey least 30 tackles in each of the last three seasons. ■ Logan Ledgerwood is a 6-foot, 182-pound cornerback from Fort Benton. He played in every Tech game the last three seasons. Ledgerwood has six career interceptions, including three this season. ■ Daniel Chandler is a Ledgerwood 5-11, 182-pound cornerback from Bishop, Calif. The three-year starter has a knack for making big plays for the Orediggers.
Chandler recovered two fumbles — one that he forced — Sept. 10 against MSU-Northern. ■ Matt Matosich is a 6-1, 219-pound fullback from Carlin, Nev. Matosich contributed on special teams for the Chandler Orediggers the last four seasons. He moved from defensive end to fullback for his senior season. ■ Drew Waltee is a 6-2, 285-pound left tackle from Montana City. The Helena High product started three years for the Orediggers, protecting the quarterback’s blind side. Waltee, a captain, also saw some time as a Matosich starter as a redshirt freshman. ■ Marcus Johnson is a 6-foot, 273pound nose guard from Billings. The
Billings Senior product played as a true freshman and is a three-year starter at Montana Tech. Despite playing through multiple injuries the past two seasons, Johnson has been the heart Waltee and soul of the Tech defensive line. ■ Matt Study is a 6-4, 280-pound left guard from Kalispell. Study, a Johnson Flathead High School graduate, started every game during his junior and senior seasons. Study also also started most of the games of his sophomore season at left guard. Study

An up-and-down first season for Western’s Nourse BY PAT RYAN of The Montana Standard
Montana Western head coach Ryan Nourse has nearly a year under his belt at the front of a collegiate football program, and says it’s been an up-anddown ride over the course of the season. “We kind of peaked in the middle of the season,” Nourse said of his Bulldogs. “But I feel confident that we’ve set a foundation for future success. Obviously, we would have liked to have a few more wins this season, but right now it’s not about the wins. It’s about setting a standard of performance for the future.” Nourse isn’t ready to call it a season just yet, as the Bulldogs have one more shot at Montana Tech Saturday at noon. Western got its first victory under Nourse’s direction on Oct. 1 when the Bulldogs dealt the Orediggers a 55-16 beating at Vigilante Field in Dillon. The Bulldogs since picked up another last-second win over Montana StateNorthern with a dramatic field goal from Yim Sribenjakul.
“We weren’t trying to come in and build a team just for this season. We wanted to build a program.” Ryan Nourse
Senior Western quarterback Zach McRae, who has been out the last two games with a concussion, was cleared to play this week and will start Saturday. McRae picked the Oredigger defense apart the last time the teams met, but Nourse said he’s very wary of Tech’s defense this time around. “We’ve been watching them on video, and especially on defense, Tech’s playing very fast,” Nourse said. “They’re aggressive and they’re playing downhill. Tech is forcing the issue and putting some pressure on people. I think that’s a familiar sight for a Morrell defense. He’s got them rocking.” Though it’s Senior Day for the
Orediggers, the Western seniors will also be playing in their final game. “They’re giving it all they’ve got and they’re battling away,” Nourse said. “The way we play and type of players we’ll have here over the next few years, I think we’re pleased with what we’ve got going on,” he continued. “I don’t think anyone is disappointed in our style. We had a good recruiting class, and from
here I feel we’re strong and we’re going to compete.” Nourse said working hard and continuing to recruit quality players will be his goal for now. “We weren’t trying to come in and build a team just for this season,” Nourse said. “We wanted to build a program. I think we’ve got a pretty good foundation going.”
