Tech-Carroll rivalry sets up exciting match BY AMBER KUEHN of Montana Lee Newspapers
T
he games are often close and almost always unpredictable. So what better way to wrap up the regular season than with Carroll College facing Montana Tech and Western, its biggest rivals on the hardwood? “When Carroll, Tech and Western play you can throw the records out the window,” Saints coach Brandon Veltri said. “Regardless of where teams stand, it’s going to be a great basketball game. The rivalry with Tech is a great rivalry that goes back a lot of years. The intensity is right where you want it this time of season.” The Carroll women tip off tonight’s game against the Orediggers at 5:30 p.m. in the Carroll P.E. Center, followed by the men’s game at 7:30. The Saints squads then host Western on Saturday for the regular-season finale and Senior Night. Tech goes on to Billings to face Rocky Mountain College on Saturday.
As expected, a tight Frontier Conference race on the men’s side has come down to the final weekend. Though the Carroll men are still fighting for a postseason home game and seeding in the conference tournament, Veltri said the message to his team this week was to ignore scenarios and focus on the Saints’ task at hand. “Instead of worrying about who needs to win and who’s gonna finish where, we need to focus on what we need to do,” he said, “and that’s play as well as we can against Tech on Thursday. That’s the only thing we can control.” Carroll (13-11 overall, 6-6 Frontier) edged Tech (11-12, 3-9) in the first meeting of the year in Butte, despite being outrebounded by the Ore’Diggers 41-33. The battle on the boards has been a point of emphasis this season for the Saints, who have shot lights out but been hurt by opponents’ offensive

Greger, a freshman guard-forward from Florence, leads the Ore’’Diggers in scoring this season, averaging 12.35 points per game. He’s shooting 47.9 percent on field goals, 48.6 percent on 3-pointers and 82.4 percent from the free throw lilne.

Rivalry ... Continued from Page D3 rebounds and second-chance opportunities. Veltri said that’s something the team hopes to shore up this week and, if the Saints continue to shoot as well as they have been — they shot 55 percent from the field at Northern, and a stellar 63 percent in their most recent home game — he likes their chances. “We’re running our offense as well as we ever have,” Veltri said. “The kids are playing with a ton of confidence and know where they need to put the ball to get their opportunities.” The last-place ’Diggers will likely have something to say about that, though. The ’Diggers are a strong defensive team that likes to switch from man-toman to zone, half-court to full-court, keeping teams on their toes. They’ll also try to limit Carroll to one look per possession, with relentless rebounders Cole Conway and Daniel Simon manning the post. “We have to do a better job of locating those two,” Veltri said of the duo, which has combined for 253 boards this year and pulled down 23 total against the Saints. The ’Diggers, winners of just one of their last 10, are aiming to snap a three-game losing skid. Despite their struggles this season, the Saints know better than to take a feisty Tech squad for granted. “It just seems like Tech last year and this year has been bottom of the conference and still given us a game every time,” Saints senior Tony Dalton said.
BU-20290225
“I’ve never had an easy game against them.” Montana Tech coach Aaron Woliczko agrees that there’s something special about when the ’Diggers play Carroll. “The last two years games with Carroll, whether they were regular season or playoffs, have been very, very tight,” said Woliczko, in his second year at the helm. “It’s been by one posession or come down to the last minute of the game. We’re trying to have another competitive game wtih them this week, and hopefully have an opportunity to come out on the other end of the score.” The ’Diggers are led by senior point guard Tyree Haynie and freshman sharpshooter Adam Greger, who averages 12.4 ppg on 48 percent shooting. “Greger played really well against us down there,” Dalton said. “He made some really tough shots; he’s good at finding open shots against the zone.” The last time they played, the Saints did most of their damage from behind the arc, hitting 50 percent of their shots from 3-point range. Woliczko said his team will have to be better at defending the perimeter and contesting the long jumpers, but noted that a team like Carroll can be difficult to prepare for with such a good inside-outside-inside attack.. Carroll is coming off a loss to the Lights that sent them into a tie for fourth place when a win could have put them as high as second. They’re hoping to rebound from the setback by doing exactly that — rebounding. “Most of the time we were there and just WALTER HINICK / THE MONTANA STANDARD didn’t finish the possession,” Dalton said of his team’s TECH FORWARD ADAM GREGER fights for the ball against Walla rebounding woes. “If you just get a couple more of Walla during a game earlier in the season. those rebounds, it’s a whole different ball game.”

Saints look for repeat win over Tech women BY AMBER KUEHN of Montana Lee Newspapers
Winning the 50-50 balls has not been a problem for the Saints women, one of the top rebounding teams in the conference. But if Carroll (10-15, 3-9) is going to put an end to its five-game losing streak and get back on track, it’s going to take more offensive contributions to get it done. “Obviously the thing we’ve struggled with all year is finding offense,” said Saints first-year women’s coach Rachelle Sayers. “We rebound well and defend well ... now we need to take the confidence and poise we have on the defensive end and match that on the offensive end. “We have to have all five players on the floor want to be scorers. If we do that we’ll be fine.” The Saints got a much-needed confidence boost in their 55-48 loss to Northern, when they shot a season-best 16 of 17 from the free-throw line. But they still shot just 31 percent from the field, and the typically fundamentally sound Saints found themselves making too many mistakes down the stretch. “Once we lost Alysha Green we knew we’d lost a lot from the offensive end,” junior Torrie Cahill said, referring to the senior guard’s season-ending knee injury. “We decided to just play our hearts out on defense. Coach has never questioned our work ethic, and I think that’s something to be really proud of. If we can execute well on offense, we’ll be fine against Tech.” Carroll won the first meeting 47-41 on Jan. 28, the Saints’ last victory. The Saints rallied from a 20-15 halftime deficit in that one by outscoring the ’Diggers 32-21 over the final 20 minutes

behind a big game by freshman Bailey Snelling, who finished with 15 points. Cahill said Carroll needs to start strong and put the game away early tonight. “Energy has been our main thing all year,” said the Miles City native, who leads the team with 9.2 points per game. “When we do have it that’s when we play our best by far. But we had played Western the night before and it was a dogfight, so I think we were tired. But we dug deep and did what it took to win.” Sayers said she felt her team was thinking too much about what Tech was going to do defensively in that first game. “They trap a lot and mix up defenses and we might have been overprepared for that,” she said. “We were too busy trying to figure out what they were gonna do instead of playing aggressive and just attacking.” The message this time is to keep it simple and stick to the game plan: driving to the hoop, drawing the foul and sinking the free throws. Nobody has been better at that than Cahill, who has canned 81 percent of her foul shots in league play and has gotten to the line 101 times this season. She was 4 for 4 in the first meeting with Tech and also has a 9for-9 performance to her credit. “I worked real hard in the offseason

to improve my shot, but once I hurt my shoulder, my shot just hasn’t been the same,” said Cahill, who has a torn labrum. “I know to help our team I need to get to the hole and go up strong against big posts. Other teams aren’t as disciplined as us, so I go in with the intention of a three-point play every time.” Mandy Machinal leads Tech (9-15, 4-8) with 13.8 ppg. She scored 11 last time against Carroll, the only Digger in double digits. Amber Kuehn is a sports reporter for the Helena Independent Record. MONTANA TECH’S LISA LASLOVICH keeps the ball away from Carroll’s Bailey Snelling, left, and Jill Jagelski during a game last year.
