Chandler eager for homecoming win Tech senior brings big-play ability into contest vs. Saints BY BILL FOLEY of The Montana Standard

Saturday night’s football game against Carroll College is the kind Daniel Chandler lives for. “There’s not even words that can describe it,” the Montana Tech senior cornerback says. “It’s a night game ... against Carroll.” The Orediggers will take on the defending NAIA national champions in the prime-time clash. A large crowd is Chandler expected for the homecoming game, which kicks off at 6:07 p.m. The crowd could very well surpass the population of Chandler’s hometown of Bishop, Calif., a town of about 4,000. From the second Chandler moved to Butte, he showed he was ready for such a spotlight.

“Just making a big play and having the crowd go nuts here at Alumni Coliseum, there’s nothing better than that,” Chandler says. The cornerback had a double dose of that last time the Orediggers played at Alumni against MSU-Northern in a game that was also under the lights. Chandler recovered two fumbles — one that he also forced — as a crowed of more than 2,100 howled. Chandler, who has a reputation as a big-time hitter for a cornerback, says he’d even take a key play like that over the perfect, highlight-reel hit. Chandler is being moved to free safety due to injuries. He remembers his first big play like it was yesterday. “It was fourth down right here,” he says pointing to a spot on the Alumni Coliseum field after a practice. “Fourth and three against Eastern Oregon. “I came up. It wasn’t just me, but I kind of leveraged him and three of us

tackled him,” Chandler remembers. “The crowd just went nuts. That’s when I really felt the power of the crowd.” Chandler got a sense of that crowd the year before. He couldn’t do anything about it, though. “I remember my redshirt year, it kind of sucked to get all pumped just to sit on the sidelines,” he says. “I remember in my first year coming out and just loving it.” When Chandler first set foot on the campus of Montana Tech, he had to sell himself to the coaching staff. His parents, Keith and Linda, moved to Stevensville after Chandler graduated from Bishop Union High School. “I came up with them (his parents) when they checked out properties and stuff,” Chandler says. “I checked out schools, and I fell in love Tech. I wanted to look for a good school and a great football program.” Chandler made a pitch to then coach Bob Green. “I ended up walking on,” Chandler says. “I gave Green my tape and he liked it.

Stopping run key for ’Diggers Tech looks to snap 14-game skid against Carroll College BY BILL FOLEY of The Montana Standard

If Montana Tech’s football team wants to halt its three-game losing streak, it first has to stop Chance Demarais. That will be easier said than done. Demarais is a 6-foot, 227pound Carroll College running back who has bruised and battered opponents this season. Through three games, Demarais has already racked up 565 yards rushing on 86 carries. He’s picking up yardage at 6.6 yards per carry. “You’re not going to bring Chance down with an arm tackle,” Tech coach Chuck Morrell said. “He doesn’t take losses ever. Even if he’s got some traffic in the backfield, he manages to navigate it, break arm tackles and end up with positive runs. “The biggest thing with him is the number of yards he has after contact.” Demarais, who bulked up after playing a part-time role in last year’s NAIA national title run, ran for 231 yards in last week’s win over Montana Western. Carroll coach Mike Van Diest isn’t afraid to lean on his newest weapon. Demarais carried the ball 34 times (for 198 yards) in Carroll’s season-opening victory. If the Tech defensive front — which includes Marcus Johnson, Jacob

Workman, Mike Waldman, Joe Semansky, Joe Hickey, Calvin Odell, Kevin Schey, Connor O’Neill and Ryan Jones — can’t slow down that running game, the Orediggers could be in some serious trouble. That running game opens things up for Carroll senior quarterback Dane Broadhead, who has completed 68 percent of his passes. “He’s got a wealth of knowledge about the game and he’s very sharp,” Morrell said of Broadhead, who has starting experience dating back to his senior season. “He’s doing a great job executing their offense.” Broadhead, who has eight touchdown passes compared to three interceptions, has a talented group of receivers — led by senior Matt Ritter — at his disposal. Tech’s secondary, which has been shaken up by injury, will have a hard time keeping those receivers in check if Demarais has a big game. Cornerback Daniel Chandler will move to free safety because Jordan Heringer and Jake Helbling will be held out with injuries. Ketwaun Frank will start at corner across from Logan Ledgerwood. Nathan Kobold will play strong safety. Here’s some more key matchups to keep your eye on:

themselves in the foot the past two games. Last week, Rocky Mountain turned four Tech turnovers into 24 points in a 44-37 win in Billings. The Orediggers saw an interception returned for a touchdown in each of the last two games. “We are an extremely young team. We’ve got a lot of growing up to do,” Morrell said. “On every given down we’ve shown that we can execute with great teams and play with great teams. We’ve also shown the flip side of a young team and made some horrendous mistakes that have cost us ball games. “That’s part of the maturation process.” As their 14-game winning streak over Montana Tech shows, the Saints don’t need any help.

Monday-friday 6am-6pm; Saturday 6am-5pm

TECH ‘O’ VS. CARROLL ‘D’ Despite the four turnovers, the Montana Tech offense sprung to life last week. The Orediggers put up more than 500 yards of offense in the loss to Rocky. Putting up anywhere near that against Carroll would be impressive. The Saints have given up a leaguebest 256.0 yards per game, and that includes their Week 2 loss to Eastern Oregon. Carroll’s defense, as usual, is deep and talented. Senior linebacker Thomas Robison leads the conference with 10.7 tackles per game. Junior defensive back Brian Strobel

Tech spikers seek first conference win Orediggers fall to 0-3 in conference and 7-9 overall Shersteen Cline returned to action this week as the Lady ’Diggers hosted Westminster last Friday night. Cline’s return wasn’t enough to break into the conference win column as the spikers lost to the Griffins in three games. The Orediggers were 79 overall and 0-3 in conference games. The return of Cline is big for the Diggers, but she is not in season form quite yet. She finished the Cline night with five kills and one block. Emily Lobnitz turned in seven kills and one block in a .158 hitting efficiency. As a freshman, Lobnitz continues to improve. Allyse Cruise turned in a good defensive performance with 13 digs. Westminster posted a balanced attack with six players recording at least four kills. The team held a 36-24 advantage in total kills with a .177 hitting efficiency. The Griffins also recorded six service aces and four blocks while popping up 38 digs. Montana Tech resumed league play with road matches at league powers Carroll on Wednesday night and Rocky Mountain on Thursday. Results of those contests were not complete prior to this printing. The Orediggers were to play LewisClark State last weekend and did start on the competition. The Warriors led them 2-0 through two games and had a 3-0 edge in gamethree scoring when the lights went dark. A power outage in Uptown Butte unplugged the match and the delay was

lengthy and uncertain enough to force cancellation of the match. It was ruled a no contest by league officials and will be made up later from first serve of the first game. So, the Orediggers got a mulligan out of it. No makeup date had been announced by the copy deadline for this section. Montana Western also entered the week looking for its first Frontier Conference win after dropping home matches to Westminster and Lewis-Clark State last weekend. The Bulldogs were 0-4 in league going into weekend play at Carroll and Rocky Mountain. New head coach Lisa Griffiths has guided them to five non-conference wins in a good start. Kayla Schmid has 119 kills so far for UMW and Jessica Brunett has come on strong on the front line. Charelle Minor is the leading overall hitter. Rocky Mountain dedicated Friday night’s home match against Montana Western to the memory of former player and assistant coach Hailey Pearce. Pearce, 25, died July 18 from injuries suffered in an auto accident near Ritzville, Wash. She played four years as a setter for the Battlin’ Bears from 2004-07 and also spent two years as an assistant to Rocky head coach Laurie Kelly. Pearce was heading into her second season as head coach at Eastern Oregon University at the time of her death. Prior to the match, Kelly presented Pearce’s No. 7 Rocky Mountain uniform to

her father, Parley Pearce of Walla Walla, Wash., and his wife, Vickie. The school is also in the process of creating a Hailey Pearce Memorial Scholarship fund. Donations to the scholarship were accepted on the night of the match. More information is also available by contacting Obert Undem, Rocky’s director of plan giving, at 657-1142. Against Western, the Rocky team wore special jerseys with a pink heart and Pearce’s initials on the sleeve. “We thank God for the time we got to spend with Hailey and appreciate the many memories that we all share,” Kelly said. The Bears were upset by Carroll during league play last weekend. They played St. Martin’s of Lacey, Wash., on Wednesday night in a non-conference tilt. Kristen Telin’s dominant play in the fifth-set tiebreaker propelled the Carroll College volleyball team to the upset over No. 10 Rocky Mountain. After splitting the first two sets, 21-25, 25-17, 25-22 and 19-25, the Saints prevailed over the Bears in the finale, 15-7. “Kristen took over in that fifth set,” said Carroll coach Moe Boyle, whose charges improved to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference. “She had five kills in seven attempts, and that was the spark we needed.” Telin finished with a match-high 15 kills. Markki Otteson pitched in with 11 kills and Sarah Roshak added 10. “This was a big win for us, and it was a total team effort,” Boyle said. “I felt like the seniors and freshmen played at the same level, and that’s what we’ve been

working on for seven years. We played well, and we had to play well to beat them.” The Saints had four women in double figures in digs, paced by Maureen Frauenholtz and Mo Ritter, with 24 and 16, respectively. Defensively at the net, the purple and gold out-blocked Rocky 15-4, led by Elli Graff, with six stops, and Telin, with 3.5. Telin captured Frontier Conference Player of the Week honors for the performance. Things went from bright to bleak for the Montana State University-Northern volleyball team, the Havre Daily News reported on the Northern website. But in front of a roaring homecoming crowd Friday night at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse, the Skylights seized control of first place in the Frontier Conference by ousting arch-rival, the University of Great Falls in a five-set thriller. Northern quickly stormed to a 2-0 lead before the 25th-ranked Argos won two straight sets to force a fifth and decisive game. And in the final game, the Skylights went on 4-1 run to seize momentum and win the set 15-11. Northern won the first two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-21 before losing the next two to the Argos by scores of

’Diggers, Saints meet at Alumni BY BILL FOLEY of The Montana Standard

Chuck Morrell doesn’t want the Montana Tech-Carroll College game to be the be-all and end-all. “We don’t want to put us in a position where on a yearly basis where we strictly pin the hopes of the season on one game,” the Montana Tech first-year head coach said. Still, as the Orediggers face the Saints for the first time of the Morrell era, the new coach admits that a win Saturday could be the kind of win that is a program builder. “Oh yeah,” Morrell said with a laugh. “It certainly could.” The Orediggers and Saints will kick off at 6:07 p.m. at Alumni Coliseum. The Frontier Conference battle will be televised state wide on the CW Network. “The regional rivalry aspect is tremendous,” Morrell said of playing Carroll. “We know we’re going to have a big crowd, it’s going to be on TV and it’s homecoming. “There’s a lot of things that are certainly going to create the electricity. But we need to focus on taking one game at time.” The Orediggers (1-3 overall, 0-3 Frontier) are trying to stop a threegame losing streak. The No. 4-ranked Saints (2-1, 2-1) are trying to start a new winning streak. Two weeks ago, Carroll saw its 44-game Frontier Conference winning

streak stopped by Eastern Oregon in Helena. Last week, the Saints bounced back with a home win over Montana Western. Morrell called the Saints, the defending NAIA national champions, a “welloiled machine.” “They’re certainly at the level that we want to see our program progress to,” he said. Carroll has won its last 14 games against Tech, dating back to Oct. 9, 2004 in Butte. Morrell said his team isn’t out to make history Saturday. The Orediggers want to do that every time out. “The thing I tell the guys is you’ve got to own every day in life,” he said. “Whatever you do that day is going to go down in the record books, and there’s no opportunity to change it.” Beating the Saints won’t be easy, Morrell said. But it also won’t take a miracle. “We’ve got some difference makers on our side of the ball,” Morrell said. “There’s certainly a ton of focus on them and I’m sure they’ve got championship aspirations because they’ve got some playmakers. We certainly got some guys who can play. “When it comes to rivalry games you kind of throw out the records because you know you’re going to get the best out of both teams.” With three losses already, the Orediggers have little hope of making the playoffs. That doesn’t mean the Orediggers don’t have anything to play for, however.

Morrell said he is trying to build a program with the same kind mindset that his team will see on the other sideline Saturday. He wants to build a team that expects to win every time out. “If you put that time and effort in, you should be stunned or shocked if you lose,” Morrell said. “You’re gracious and understanding when you win, but that’s what you expect in the first place. “What I’m attempting to establish with our guys is to have that expectation that you’re going to have your best performance, you’re well-prepared and you have nothing to lose. There’s no reason to be nervous, and there’s no reason to expect anything other than winning.” The Orediggers have been in every game they played this year. “All you can ask for is to put your self in the position to have the opportunity to be in it in the fourth quarter,” Morrell said. “So far this year, we’ve done a pretty good job of that.”

Saturday is Military Appreciation Day Saturday’s homecoming tilt between Montana Tech and Carroll College will be Military Appreciation Day at Alumni Coliseum. All current military members and veterans will receive free admission to the 6:07 p.m. game with a military ID. The Montana National Guard will be in attendance presenting the colors. In addition, they will be a part of the ceremonial coin toss. The tailgate area and Alumni Coliseum will open at 4 p.m. The Orediggers won’t play at home again until Oct. 29 when they play host to Rocky. They play at Montana Western next week. After a week off, Tech will travel to Eastern Oregon and MSU-Northern.

Stopping ... Continued from Page D5 averages nearly six tackles per game, while junior defensive end Rahkeem Harris is a threat to get the quarterback on every play. An offensive line that will start Drew Waltee, Matt Study, Keith Mullan, Mack Ferko and Jay Pyburn will be tested big time in trying to protect quarterback Brian Schwarzkoph and pave the way for Tech’s ground game. Pat Hansen, who returned to the form he had in the season opener with 143 yards, will need to have another big game. Nick Baker and Taylor Rowe will also be counted on in the running game. Junior receiver Craig Halko is coming off his best game as an Oredigger, hauling in five passes for 137 yards and three touchdowns. James Roberts and Trent Thomas are also coming off five-catch games. Tech will be without Clay McQueary, who will miss the game with an injury.

Tech’s offense looked great in the opener and again last week. The games against MSUNorthern and Eastern Oregon, though, were a different story. Tech needs a solid game from the offense on Saturday.

SAINTS VS. TECH FANS Tech-Carroll is always a big draw at the gate. The rivalry has garnered national attention and been called one of the best in small college football. When these two teams get together, the crowds tend to get rowdy. This year, it could be even worse. The 6:07 p.m. kickoff means fans have more time to tailgate for the game. The Orediggers switching sidelines this season, means the Saints will have to hear more from those fans. The Montana Tech student second will be a matter of feet behind the Carroll bench. The headache for security could also be a headache for the Saints players and coaches. How they handle that, could go a WALTER HINICK / THE MONTANA STANDARD MONTANA TECH LINEBACKER CONNOR O’NEILL (6) leads the Frontier Conference in long way toward whether or not Carroll wins or loses Saturday night. tackles for loss.

Seek ... Continued from Page D6 25-17 and 25-16. Hillary Isleifson had 12 kills and Paige Richardson added eight for the Skylights The Armory in Havre is always a difficult venue to play in for visiting teams. Versus Great Falls, it was no exception. The Skylights battled at home to win the first game by two and the second game by four. The Argos had to play catch-up — a position they have not been in very much this season. The Argos were led offensively by junior Kelsey Van Uden who slammed 25 kills to the Armory floor. Defensively for the Argos, Kyah Piva had 26 digs. On the other side of the net the Skylights numbers were less impressive yet consistent enough for the win, the UGF website reported. “They came out ready to fight” Great Falls head coach Arunas Duda said. “We battled but fell behind the first two games. Our ladies played really well to even the match. We simply came up short in the fifth. We learned some things about ourselves tonight. We have to play better as we get deeper into conference play. We are more than capable. We learn, we

move on.” The Lewis-Clark State College volleyball team looked sharp in its first Frontier Conference road match of the season on Friday. The Warriors breezed by Montana Western in three sets 2517, 25-21, 25-16. First-year Lewis-Clark State head coach LaToya Harris was pleased with the team’s effort in the win over Montana Western. “I thought in the first set we jumped on them strong,” said Harris. “We had a great flow. Later in the set we had a few errors and gave them a chance to comeback, but we competed well and a lot of people stepped up.” Harris commented that consistency was a bit of an issue for her team during the second set, but added that her squad’s defense was pretty strong throughout. “After winning the first we relaxed a little in the second set, and we need to work on that. Kaylee Rector and Chelsea Shears did a good job in the back row for us though, and Chelsea Strong blocked very well tonight.” Harris also said that Brianne Brown and Lauryn Herrick did a good job leading the attack on offense. It was reported, too, on the L-C State

website that the Warriors and Montana Tech will, on Oct. 12, resume their match halted by the power outage. It said the match will start where it left off, saying the Warriors led 4-0 in the third game. Lewis-Clark State said the start time will be 2 p.m. and after the Warriors and Orediggers finish, L-C State will continue on to Billings to play Rocky Mountain.. Westminster snapped a four-match losing skid with a 3-0 sweep of Montana Tech. Westminster posted a balanced attack with six players recording at least four kills. The team held a 36-24 advantage in total kills with a .177 hitting efficiency. The Griffins also recorded six service aces and four blocks while popping up 38 digs. Kenzie Mitchell and Stephanie Jones Morin finished with seven kills apiece to lead the team. Mitchell hit .313 with one block and Jones Morin added six digs. Katie Vance added six kills with Ashley Marchant and Alexis Aalona posting five kills each. Emily Atkinson recorded a double-double behind 24 assists and 11 digs. Westminster then defeated Western in four games last Saturday. — Compiled from websites and newspaper reports by Bruce Sayler, sports editor of The Montana Standard.

Eager ... Continued from Page D4 He said ‘We don’t have a scholarship for you right now.’ I was kind of late when I was looking at stuff. I ended up getting a scholarship after my first spring.” During his second year on campus — his redshirt freshman year — Chandler started making contributions, including that fourth-down stop against Eastern Oregon. In all, he made 14 tackles that season. Chandler, who played corner and safety before moving to linebacker in high school, says the big hits just come naturally. “I played linebacker in high school so I kind of just had that in me, I guess,” he says. “You really can’t learn that. You have it or you don’t.” Chandler started as a sophomore, earning second-team all-conference honors. A few years earlier, such an honor seemed highly unlikely because Chandler missed his entire junior football season with a fractured back. “I got hit in the back and I got hit here,” Chandler says while pointing to his chest. “I got bent back.” Doctors told Chandler he didn’t need

surgery, just rest. Then, as a he lifted weights readying for his junior season, the injury flared up. “They gave me the OK, and I started lifting really hard,” Chandler says. “One day I was doing RDLs (Romanian deadlifts) and I felt it, not pop but I felt something.” The injury, which was on his L3 vertebrae, was the kind that makes a guy have second thoughts about playing football. “I had to think if I wanted to keep playing or if it would be good enough to play,” Chandler says. “I’m actually really surprised I bounced back. I had such a great senior year, and that’s the main reason I went and played college ball.” Chandler, who started racing motocross when he was 3, didn’t play any other sports at Bishop Union. In a way, the injury might have made Chandler an even better defensive player. “I played receiver on JV,” he says. “Then I hurt my back and I kind of got put behind. So I just focused on defense.” As a senior in college, Chandler’s focus is on learning a new defense. “At first I was really unsure about new things,” he says about picking up new head coach Chuck Morrell’s 3-4 scheme. “It was my last year, and can we get it all together?”

Eager ... Continued from Page D13 That, Chandler says, didn’t turn out to be a problem. “The staff has done an exceptional job,” he says. “They put in their time, they know their stuff, work their (butt) off and prepare us.” So far, the overall results the defense is looking for aren’t there, even though the unit has shown flashes of brilliance. “We are prepared, we’re just not doing it ourselves,” Chandler says. “They prepared us in scheme, we’re just not doing it. That’s our problem right now. “One person misses their assignment, and that’s when the big play is. In our defense, that’s how it is. If one person messes up, it can be 20 yards or a touchdown. So everybody’s got to be locked in all the time.” The Orediggers have lost three straight games after an exciting season-opening win. If a few plays had gone Tech’s way, the Orediggers could be 3-1 or even 4-0. “I kind of think we lost the games,” Chandler says. “The other team hasn’t really won it; we just kind of lost it ourselves.” Chandler is one of nine seniors on the

Montana Tech team. That’s the group charged with turning the season around and completing the transition from the old coaching staff to the new. “There’s only nine of us, but everyone is doing a great job. Even the juniors have stepped up a lot,” Chandler says. “I’m not too talkative. I try to do it with my play and how I practice and stuff like that.” Chandler is optimistic about the Orediggers’ long-term and short-term futures. “I think it’s working out really well,” he says. “The people that stuck it out really gave their heart and soul into this program. It’s their last year, and they’re really trying to rally everyone together.” A business major, Chandler will graduate from Tech in May. “I want to try and stay in Montana,” he says, pointing to several opportunities already presented to him. “The career fair worked out for me really well. “I love Montana. I love to hunt and fish and the outdoors, and there’s no better place.” First, Chandler wants a few more chances to hear the roar of that Alumni Coliseum crowd. “Playing in that — especially with the big crowds where we have people in the end zone — there’s nothing better than that,” Chandler says. “I love it.”
