Harrington

told The Montana Standard recently that he is proud of the work accomplished during that time in the state’s history. “We did a great job. It (the new Constitution) withstood time very well and was very progressive in moving the state forward,” Harrington said. He noted that the Montana’s original Constitution, which was drafted in 1889, had a good deal of “corporate control” over the state. This was mainly to blame on the deep-pocketed influence of the Copper Kings, such as the Anaconda Co., Harrington said. It was his decades of service to Montana and Butte-Silver Bow that

moved the Butte Celebrations committee to elect him to lead this year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade. “I was told I had worked hard for many years in the Legislature and in Butte and that’s why they selected me,” Harrington said. Though he admits he’s a little nervous about being grand marshal of the parade, Harrington won’t be up there all alone. He plans to have his wife of 49 years, Pat, and his six grandchildren with him during the parade. “I’ve always enjoyed St. Patrick’s Day in Butte,” Harrington said. “So many families return to Butte and I always meet so many great people.”

‘Tater Famine’ to play Shindig This year’s event honors Don Cooney Ed Tinsley’s band “Tater Famine” will play for 39th Shillelagh Shindig on Friday, March 16, at the Mile High Event Hall at Star Lanes, 4600 Harrison Ave. The party from 7 p.m. to midnight and open to the public at no charge is dedicated this year to the memory of Don Cooney. Cooney (1933-2011) and Charles Jeniker started the annual Shindig, a fundraiser for Butte-Silver Bow Democrats. The Pipes and Drums of the Edmonton Police Service are scheduled to perform at 9:30 p.m. Other shindig entertainment will be by the Copper Cloggers and Irish soloist Judy Powers.

The event will include a silent auction, featuring some of Cooney’s photography and float trip among other items, 50-50, raffles and free snacks. This is the third year in

a row Tinsley’s Helenabased band has appeared at the Shindig. They play all kinds of rock as well as some folk and Irish tunes. The band is known to

change its name to compliment the theme of the particular gig they are playing. At last year’s Shindig they billed themselves as “Jacobs Ladder.” The three original members are Ed Tinsley from Helena, guitar and vocals; Bill Lombardi, Helena, lead guitar, and Butte native Mark Piskolich, guitar, mandolin, harmonicas and vocals. Mary Tuckerman of Helena is on vocals and piano, Deb Halliday of Helena is on vocals and bass, Erroll Koch of Helena plays accordion, guitar and various other instruments and vocals, and Cody Davis of Helena on drums. ‘GREAT IRISH FAMILY ’ Butte Celebrations has designated the Mulcahy clan as the Great Irish Family for this year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade. The Great Irish Family started when Tity and Mae Mulcahy had their first child, Marie, nearly 90 years ago. Marie Mulcahy Cassidy will be with the family in the parade on Saturday, March 17, at 11 a.m.. Eleven others followed. Tity and Mae reared their dozen children in Dublin Gulch near the Steward and Kelley mines. The family now numbers over 250. “We’re expecting about a hundred to come from all over, Spokane, Billings and Missoula,” said Colleen

Mulcahy Griffith. “Everyone is so excited, especially the grandchildren.” Some of the Mulcahys will ride in the Chamber of Commerce trolley “but a lot of us will walk behind the trolley,” Griffith said. They’re planning to decorate the trolley and a decorated truck which will follow the clan is the Mulcahys’ parade entry. St. Patrick’s Day has always been special for the family; many have been seen for years along the parade route wearing Irish sweaters with “Mulcahy” knitted into the design. Some of the Mulcahy men feature beards and hair dyed green for their special day.

The patriarch, Tity, whose given name was Thomas, for years ran Mulcahy’s Bar on North Main just south of the Federal Building. Judy Powers of Anaconda, a friend, says the family “has always loved their Irish heritage and upbringing.” Nine of Tity’s and Mae’s children survive: Marty Mulcahy, Richie Mulcahy, Mickey Mulcahy, Billy Mulcahy, Eileen Tierney, Betty Jo Houchin, Alice McMillan, Colleen Griffith and Marie Cassidy. Cass Rosich passed away in 2008; Maurice “Moe” in 2004, and Tom in 1992. — Zena Beth McGlashan

People warned about impaired driving driving, said Beaverhead County Sheriff Jay Hansen. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08 in Montana, but drivers can be cited for impaired driving at lower limits. “Your safest move for avoiding arrest and avoiding a crash is to have a sober driver. Know how you are getting home before you start to party,’’ he said. The extra patrols concentrate on keeping impaired drivers off the road, deterring

speeding and encouraging the use of seat belts and child restraints. The additional patrols

are funded by the Montana Department of Transportation Selective Traffic Enforcement Programs grants.

Everybody may be a little Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, but that’s no excuse to drive impaired this weekend or any day of the week. Beaverhead County and other area counties will have extra patrols out to help make this a safe holiday for everyone. Many people celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by drinking alcohol, but even if you’ve had only a few drinks and are just feeling “buzzed,” don’t kid yourself because buzzed driving is drunk
