Unselfish service to mankind Parade marshals spent years helping fellow citizens BY GERARD O’BRIEN of the Montana Standard
ervice to the less fortunate has always been part and parcel of the lives of Joanne and Jim Cortese, the co-directors of the Butte Emergency Food Bank. As they complete their final year prior to retirement, it is fitting that two Irish folks who have served the Butte and Anaconda communities for so long be named as the St. Patrick’s Day parade marshals this year. And, as usual with the Corteses, they remain humble about the honor with a spot of humor, as they will be riding in a green VW bug convertible rather than a Cadillac. The Corteses have long-time ties to the Butte and Irish communities. Jim Cortese, 72, is the greatgrandson of Irish Naval Capt. Michael O’Shea, who, in the 1850s, rescued his crew from the lighthouse at Dursey Island (of the Beara Peninsula where many Butte Irish hail from) during a horrific storm. O’Shea was honored for his heroics. His daughter, Katie, immigrated to Walkerville in 1898 and married Cane Holland. Later, Jim was born to Katherine and Charles Cortese. “I attended St. Lawrence School, Butte Central and Carroll College. Later I attended the St. Thomas Seminary in Denver, along with another great-grandson of O’Shea, the Rev. Robert Shea who used to live on Woolman Street. When we were ordained, there was a write-up in the Irish Times,” Cortese said. Jim served as a priest and teacher of religion and government in the Anaconda Catholic

They moved into the new building April 2007. Volunteers at the food bank have grown from six or so up to 90. “The camaraderie among the volunteers is amazing,” she said. Clients of the food bank are growing as well, especially those recently unemployed, the Corteses said. The addition of the “food rescue program” will help get the food bank through the leaner times between their two large food collections — the annual Thompson Food Drive in December and the Postal Workers Drive in May. With a new kitchen, the food bank is able to take fresh food left over from banquets and caterers, repackage it, and give out to clients. Some say it was Jacob’s Pillow, brought to Ireland by the prophet Jeremiah — according to the Web site http://www.blarneycastle.ie/pages/ — but the band has also been billed by several other names over the years including “The Never Land Ranch Hands,” “The Dimpled Chads,” “The Earth Tones,” “The Swinging Pulaskis,” “Whistler’s In-Laws” and others. For more than 100 years the Friendly Sons and Daughters of St. Patrick have welcomed in the spring with an annual dinner in Butte. The group will host its 102 annual dinner Tuesday, March 16, at the War Bonnet Hotel, 2100 Cornell Ave., with cocktails at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. The event is open to the public and costs $25 per person. Tickets are available at the War Bonnet Hotel, Cavanaugh’s Country Celtic, or from Bubba Maloney, president of Sons and Daughters of St. Patrick, at 490-8551. Maloney said the event will involve giving away two $500 scholarships to Butte High seniors Jennifer Lynch and Kane O’Neill, and will honor past members who recently died. Maloney said it’s also a great event to reunite with loved ones. “A lot of people come back to Butte for the holiday (St. Patrick’s Day), and it’s a good time of year to see friends and family,” he said. This year’s featured speaker will be Traolach O’Riordain. O’Riordain is an adjunct assistant professor of Irish language and literature at the University of Montana in Missoula and is expected to speak about the history of Irish culture in Montana. Pat Kearney will be the evening’s master of ceremonies. The club will also present five memorial plaques to members who died in the past year. These memorials will honor Dan O’Gara, Jim “Harr” Harrington, Ed Morris, Bill Driscoll and Pat “Chops” Driscoll. The Friendly Sons and Daughters of St. Patrick was founded in Butte in 1908 as a social club celebrating Irish heritage by Judge J.J. Lynch, Maurice English and John H. O’Meara.

More than one way to celebrate BY LYNN O’ROURKE HAYES familytravel.com
Share in the luck of the Irish this St. Patrick’s Day season by finding your own bit o’ green. Here are five ideas to consider:
1. New York City. Head to the Big Green Apple for the granddaddy of all St. Patrick’s Day parades. Find a spot along Fifth Avenue to see the long-standing, noncommercial tradition unfold. Held to honor the patron saint of Ireland and to celebrate Irish faith and heritage, the first march took place on March 17, 1762 more than 14 years before the Declaration of Independence was signed. 5. Butte, Mont. Years ago Irish immigrants came to this Rocky Mountain town in search of mining opportunities. Today the Irish heritage is alive and well and no more evident than on St. Patrick’s Day, when the town comes alive.
