Shriners converge on Mining City An estimated 1,000 Shriners and their families meet in Butte this weekend for the annual ceremonial meeting of the Pacific Northwest Shrine Association, or PNSA, said organizer Jay Morris. The public is invited to watch Shriner competitions and demonstrations, and a large parade. This is only the second time the PNSA has held its ceremonial meeting in Butte. The first, in 1995, attracted about 3,500 members. Morris said the 1995 celebration was so successful that the 2011 gathering is bound to attract members. Sean Johnson, the chief rabban of the Bagdad Temple in Butte, encourages the community to watch the Shriners parade at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27. It will consist of 18 different temples from the Pacific Northwest and Canada. The parade starts from East Middle School, heads west on Grand Avenue,

added that this is a big honor because he is one of the highest ranking people in the organization. “He oversees every temple in the world,” Johnson said. Morris said the PNSA also holds an annual “seminar meeting” in various cities, but these events are planning events involving heads of each temple.

turns north on Texas and ends at the Civic Center. “It’ll rival the Fourth of July parade in size,” Morris said. Johnson said that the Shriners Imperial Potentate Michael Severe will attend the Butte meeting. Johnson

He said the ceremonial meetings are more “family-oriented” celebrations. Portions of the profits from the Butte meeting will be donated to the Shriners Hospital for Children in the region. These pediatric facilities specialize in treating serious burns, spinal chord and cleft lips and palates.

Did you know? The Shrine is an international fraternity of approximately 600,000 members who belong to Shrine Temples throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Republic of Panama. Founded in New York City in 1872, the organization is composed solely of Master Masons, 32nd degree Scottish Rite Masons or Knights Templar York Rite Masons. The Shrine is best known for its colorful parades, its distinctive red fez, and its official philanthropy, Shriners Hospitals for Children, which is often called “the heart and soul of the Shrine.” — Taken from Shrine website
