New year, new campaign United Way of Butte and Anaconda ready for 2011 The staff, board of directors, campaign coordinators and volunteers of the United Way of Butte and Anaconda are gearing up for another campaign year. The mission of the United Way is to unite our communities in assessing and addressing our most vital human needs, and to strengthen our collective ability to care for one another. Our vision is to be a leader and catalyst for community change. The United Way of Butte and Anaconda 2012 campaign is our time to concentrate on raising funds which are then allocated to local nonprofit agencies in our communities. The United Way continues its three-pronged attack to help our community through education, income and health. Together with our agency partners, we strive to lower the drop-out rate by half by the year 2018. Some of the projects we embrace are: City-wide Book Drive, The Day of the Child, The Salvation Army Dress A Child/Backpack program, and Born Learning Trails.

Dumpster Days Dumpster Days has become a city-wide mission to keep recyclables out of our landfills. To date, the effort has collected 315, 403 pounds of recyclables that didn’t make it to the landfill. That equals 157 baby elephants. All of the recyclables are collected and taken to our partner A & S Metals, who without their participation this project would not be possible. Our next dumpster Days event is Oct. 15, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Collection locations are WalMart, Butte Plaza Mall, and the Montana Standard. We are always looking for volunteers who would like to give of their time and talents and join us for this worthwhile event, all you need to do is contact the United Way office at 782-1255. VOLUNTEERS, right and below, help people load recyclables into dumpsters during Dumpster Days.

Toilet paper drive This annual event is sponsored by the United Way in an effort to collect toilet paper that is then given to local nonprofit agencies who distribute it to needy familes. The Butte Rescue Mission and the Anaconda Project Care are two of the agencies that depend on this drive for their supplies of toilet paper. This event is held in November, but we collect all year round. Toilet paper can be brought to Dumpster Days and dropped off, or it can be brought to the United Way office. Our local Wal-Mart is a huge part of the toilet paper distribution, in that they collect packages all year around and give them to the United Way for distribution to the agency partners.

Day of Caring United Way held its seventh annual Days of Caring this summer, and it was deemed a huge success. This community impact project provides sweat equity to local agencies who have a need. This year our awesome Montana Tech Oredigger football team and Coach Doug Schleeman participated in July at the Legion Oasis. These volunteers planted trees, and erected a chain link fence for the Legion Oasis facility. In August, we went to Anaconda, where volunteers provided service to Discovery House, Head Start, Family resource Center, and the Kiwanis planted a Born Learning Trail at Dwyer Elementary school. Later in August, we gathered at Montana Tech for a BBQ and a few words from Chief Executive Paul Babb before the volunteers were dispatched to their work areas. The agencies who benefited from all of these volunteers hours were the YMCA, Paul Clark Home and the Kiwanis Sunshine Camp. A great time was had by all, and many hours of sweat equity was provided to our community.

The Day of the Child This event is held in February in the Community Room of the Butte Plaza Mall. The theme each year focuses on children and is incorporated into a carnival atmosphere complete with games, prizes and fun. The United Way agency partners all come together and provide games, activities and education opportunities to all ages of children without cost. This is a day where families can bring their children and experience a variety of entertainment at no cost.

Butte Fourth of July Parade The United Way of Butte and Anaconda show their patriotism with a parade entry each year, that is constructed by volunteers. This year’s theme was a tribute to First Responders and 9/11. Our float was a replica of the Twin Towers, and riding on the float were local first responders and volunteers. We had an added element when The Salvation Army Corp and Cadet Officers joined us carrying the colors.

Citywide Book Drive

THE SALVATION ARMY Corp and cadet officers, above, joined the United Way float for the Butte Fourth of July parade, carrying the colors.

This year’s bood drive collected more than 2,500 children’s books from individuals, Butte Plaza Mall, Second Edition Books, Books to Books, Butte 4 C’s, The Hearst Free Library and the Family Resource Center in Anaconda. The goal is to provide community children with books to encourage reading and to begin personal libraries of their own. The agendy was able to distribute books each week of the Sunshine Camp, Legion Oasis and Silver Bow Homes summer feeding programs, and at the Benny Goodman Park in Anaconda. Volunteers had great turnouts at each location, and lots of smiles on the faces of the children. This program works with the assistance of the volunteers from Butte LVA literacy Program, who sort all the books and place them in age appropriate groups.
