RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW CBHS students focus on improving lives, and that starts right here on campus. Nutrition and Food Science students serve as nutrition mentors on the MT Nutrition Team, offering advice to students and faculty for eating healthy and building long-term healthy habits. Nursing students host an MTSU Health Fair each spring, offering free screenings for hearing, speech, vision, blood pressure, body mass index, blood glucose, HIV status, and more. Textiles, Merchandising, and Design students plan and produce an annual fashion show featuring clothing designed and made by students in the major. They also participate in Nashville’s Fashion Week each year. Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology students serve children and adults who have hearing, articulation, language, voice, stuttering, and other communications differences in the MTSU Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic on campus. Interior Design students can get hands-on experience by working with MTSU’s Construction/Renovation team on projects across campus. Their input includes coordinating the replacement of office finishes such as paint and flooring, providing layout options for office renovations, and helping select new furniture.

SPACE FOR LEARNING Three College of Behavioral and Human Sciences disciplines that train people to keep the peace, aid the troubled, and uplift the underserved have a new home at Middle Tennessee State University. The Academic Classroom Building, which opened in August 2020, houses classrooms and offices for the departments of Criminal Justice Administration, Psychology, and Social Work. The 91,200-square-foot building includes labs for each discipline, where students might test brain wave activities or practice marshaling a response to emergency situations.

TOOLS FOR LEARNING Nursing students get hundreds of hours of experience in clinical simulation labs, where lifelike mannequins can mimic symptoms, provide training for equipment, and even practice assisting with childbirth. Exercise Science students use fitness equipment and health monitors to measure the impact of movement and occasionally work with MTSU’s own athletic teams. Students also participate in research using an underwater treadmill to increase mobility in people with spinal cord injuries. Textiles, Merchandising, and Design students use a 3D Body Scanning Lab for research on body shape, body image, and apparel. Nutrition and Food Science students create healthy recipes in the food science lab.
