WELCOME
to an exciting new season of arts events designed to entertain and inspire audiences across generations and a NEW website www.monmouth.edu/MCA that offers a more stream-lined and user-friendly experience with expanded listings and content. We invite you to join us as we explore Art and Activism during the upcoming year through the visual and literary arts, live performances and film. The Arts have always been an effective tool for addressing social issues, and Activist Art is a form of social protest that explores cultural and political concerns. Kicking-off this theme will be two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Graham Nash, who has a long history of standing up in support of peace, and social and environmental justice. As you look through this brochure you will discover ground-breaking new artistry along with classic favorites and many other must-see events to experience with your family and friends. Sincerely,
VAUNE PECK Director Center for the Arts

AN INTIMATE EVENING OF SONGS AND STORIES WITH GRAHAM NASH Sat. September 23 ● 8 PM POLLAK THEATRE
Tickets: $46; $61; $76 (Gold Circle); VIP packages available
Legendary artist Graham Nash is a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee - with Crosby, Stills and Nash and with The Hollies. He was also inducted twice into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame, as a solo artist and with CSN, and he is a GRAMMY Award winner. His remarkable body of work, beginning with his contributions to the Hollies opus from 1964 to ’68 continues all the way to This Path Tonight (2016), his most recent solo album. His contributions to CSN(&Y) include Marrakesh Express, Pre-Road Downs (written for then-girlfriend Joni Mitchell), Lady Of the Island, Teach Your Children and Our House. Nash's passionate voice continues to be heard in support of peace, and social and environmental justice. The No Nukes/Musicians United for Safe Energy (MUSE) concerts he organized with Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt in 1979 remain seminal benefit events. In 2011, Nash was instrumental in bringing MUSE back to benefit Japan disaster relief and groups promoting non-nuclear energy worldwide. That same year, he and Crosby were among the many musicians who made their way to the Occupy Wall Street actions in lower Manhattan. This event will kick off the Center's year-long theme on Artful Explorations of Activism.

REDUCED SHAKESPEARE COMPANY’S
ALL THE GREAT BOOKS (ABRIDGED)
Thurs. October 12 ● 7:30 PM POLLAK THEATRE Tickets: $35; $45
As anyone named Cliff will tell you, "less is more." The Literary Canon explodes as the bad boys of abridgement again unleash comic outrage on an unsuspecting public. America’s best loved comedy troupe takes you on a 98 minute roller-coaster ride through its compact compendium of 89 of the world’s great books in All The Great Books (abridged). It’s 1.1 books per minute (on average). Confused by Confucius? Thrown by Thoreau? Wish Swift was faster? Aiming for an ace of Tennyson? Then hop aboard and buckle up as the three cultural guerrillas of the Reduced Shakespeare Company zip through everything you should have read in school but probably didn’t. It’s a blast of bibliography. You’ve seen their PBS special. You’ve heard them on National Public Radio. They are officially London’s longest-running comedy troupe, and have broken box-office records at the Kennedy Center, Seattle Repertory Theatre and the Pittsburgh Public Theatre.
“Verbally dexterous and physically agile. The show darts from satire to silliness to sophisticated irreverence.” ~The Boston Globe
COLIN HAY
Mon. October 16 ● 7:30 PM POLLAK THEATRE
Tickets: $38; $43; $50; $58 (Gold Circle)
As the singer, guitarist and main songwriter of Australia's Men At Work, Colin Hay was responsible for penning several of the quirkiest pop hits of the early '80s. Although forever associated with "the land down under," Hay hailed from Scotland but relocated to Australia in 1967. After Men At Work’s rise, demise and a period of reflection, Hay embarked on a solo career, debuting in 1987 with Looking For Jack. Hay continued to release critically acclaimed solo material with regularity throughout the 2000’s. In 2017 Hay recorded and released his 13th solo album, Fierce Mercy, an epic, cinematic step forward from the singer-songwriter who has become increasingly known for his wonderfully witty and intimate performances, as well as his ever-present great voice and incisive song writing. The range of artists who have chosen to cite him as a muse is vast and varied and include the likes of Metallica and The Lumineers, reflecting his continuing relevance and broad appeal. Since then, Mariza has continued to wow audiences with her powerful talent as a live performer selling out concert halls, from Carnegie Hall and Disney Concert Hall to London’s Royal Albert Hall and the Sydney Opera House, and winning awards, including a BBC World Music Award and 2008 Latin Grammy nomination.

Fri. December 8 ● 7:30 PM POLLAK THEATRE
Tickets: $40; $60; $100 (Gold Circle)
The Lords of 52nd Street are Billy Joel’s original band with Liberty DeVitto on drums, Russell Javors on rhythmic guitar, and Richie Cannata on saxophone and keyboards. The band members (along with Doug Stegmeyer – bass guitar) recorded the Turnstiles album, and then teamed up with legendary producer Phil Ramone to record The Stranger. The album was a commercial success and they continued to create many other successful albums including 52nd Street, Glass Houses and The Nylon Curtain. In 2014, Javors, Cannata and DeVitto (with Stegmeyer, posthumously) were inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. It wasn't until their induction that they decided to reunite after a 30-year separation and began performing in front of live audiences together. Fans declared that The Lords’ live performances sound just like the original recordings with Billy Joel, if not better and they continue to awe fans from around the world! The show will open with a performance by Matt McAndrew, singer songwriter, from season seven of The Voice. Proceeds from this concert will benefit the newly formed, SRF Suicide Prevention Research and Training Project at Monmouth University’s School of Social Work.

Sat. February 17 ● 8 PM | POLLAK THEATRE Tickets: $39; $49; $60 (Gold Circle)
The Wailin' Jennys are Nicky Mehta, Ruth Moody and Heather Masse - three distinct voices that together make an achingly perfect vocal sound. Starting as a happy accident of solo singer/songwriters getting together for a one-time-only performance at a tiny guitar shop in Winnipeg, Manitoba, The Wailin’ Jennys have grown over the years into one of today’s most beloved international folk acts. In 2004, The Jennys released their first full-length album 40 Days to critical acclaim, netting a 2005 Juno Award (Canadian Grammy) for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year. Bolstered by their frequent appearances on Garrison Keillor’s public radio show A Prairie Home Companion, The Jennys exploded onto the roots music scene, performing at packed venues across Canada, the U.S. and throughout the world. The Jennys’ sophomore album, 2006’s Firecracker, served as a powerful follow-up to their career-making debut. Firecracker had legs, spending over 56 weeks on the Billboard charts. The trio’s 2009 release, Live at Mauch Chunk Opera House, also spent over a year on the Billboard bluegrass charts. For their latest album, 2011’s Juno-winning Bright Morning Stars, The Wailin’ Jennys joined the ranks of Lucinda Williams and Emmylou Harris and recorded with award-winning producer Mark Howard. Founding members Moody and Mehta along with New York-based Masse continue to create some of the most exciting music on the folk-roots scene, stepping up their musical game with each critically lauded recording and thrilling audiences with their renowned live performances.

ARTIST TALK WITH WEILI SHI Mon. October 9 ● 6 PM
WILSON HALL AUDITORIUM Weili Shi is an artist who designs through the media of digital technologies. He creates unconventional experiences with the aim of provoking people’s consciousness. In his most recent work, Shan Shui in the World, he transformed the information of the buildings in Manhattan, NY, into traditional Chinese shanshui (landscape) paintings by a custom algorithm. This project revisits the ideas implicit in Chinese literati paintings of shan shui: the relationship between urban life and people’s yearning for nature, and between social responsibility and spiritual purity. With generative technology, Shan Shui in the World has the ability to represent any place in the world in the form of a shanshui painting. Shi is currently a developer at Bluecadet and teaches at Parsons School of Design. FILM SCREENING & FACULTY-LED DISCUSSION:
REBIRTH OF A NATION
BY PAUL D. MILLER AKA DJ SPOOKY
Tues. February 20 ● 4:30 PM
WILSON HALL AUDITORIUM To create his film Rebirth of a Nation, Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky, remixed D.W. Griffith’s 1915 epic film The Birth of a Nation. His re-telling of this overtly racist story depicted in the Reconstruction-era United States hurtles Griffith’s images into the 21st century. The original film was based on a novel and theater play by Thomas Dixon entitled The Clansman. By applying DJ technique to cinema, Miller's new film parallels, deconstructs and remixes the original. He likes to think of it as “film as found object” in the same sense that artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol and David Hammons, among many others, have fostered creative investigations into the idea of found objects, cinema and “appropriation art.” Following the film screening, Monmouth University faculty will lead a discussion about race with an emphasis on its connection to place. NOTE: Miller will not be present for this event.

BOOK OF ICE
Wed. March 21 ● 6 PM POLLAK THEATRE
Paul D. Miller, aka DJ Spooky, will visit Monmouth University to present his The Book of Ice—a multimedia performance and discussion he will stage with musicians from campus. Antarctica, the only uninhabited continent, belongs to no single country, and has no government. While certain countries lay claim to portions of the landmass, it is the only solid land on the planet with no unified national affiliation. Drawing on the continent’s rich history of inspiring exploration and artistic endeavors, Miller has put together his own multidisciplinary study of Antarctica. The Book of Ice is one aspect of this ongoing project. In this talk, Miller discusses his journeys to Antarctica, climate change, and the creation of The Book of Ice, using Antarctica-related data to create maps, graphics, sound, music and multimedia performances.

GALLERY EXHIBITIONS With three dedicated galleries for the visual arts, Monmouth University plays host to the creative visions of painters, sculptors and multimedia artists from across the US and abroad - as well as the unique work of our students and faculty.
TRANSITION: VIETNAM
PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARK LUDAK AND ANDREW COHEN September 5 - November 30
Moto Perpetuo (detail), Sheba Sharrow, 2006, 50"x 64", acrylic on canvas
SHEBA SHARROW:
BALANCING ACT SELECTED WORKS 1988 - 2006 September 5 - December 3
RECHNITZ HALL’S DIMATTIO GALLERY Opening Reception: Sept. 22, 7–9 PM 20th century artist Sheba Sharrow chronicled outrage and compassion for the struggles against injustice. Her work consistently displays a profound awareness of conditions beyond gender, class and nation – our human condition, animated by desire and vulnerability, power and mortality, warfare and spirituality. Despite the seriousness of these subjects, she chose never to distance herself from beauty: the grace, strength and balance of the human form, nor to inhibit the exuberance of her palette and brush. A child of the Great Depression and World War II, and participant in the social justice movements of the 60’s and 70’s, she saw the bloody roads walked for civil rights and the damages wrought by wars. Presented in partnership with James Yarosh Associates.
POLLAK GALLERY Opening Reception: Sept. 15, 6–8 PM Intrigued by the rapid transformation of Vietnam, one of the fastest growing economies in the world, Monmouth University professors Mark Ludak and Andrew Cohen have returned multiple times to photograph the region. A dynamic, youthful country, especially seen in mega-cities like Ho Chi Minh City (Sai Gon), it is a country where the traditional and contemporary are reconstituted into distinctively Vietnamese manifestations.
NATURE AND NURTURE
MOTHER/DAUGHTER ARTISTS The paintings of Cheryl Griesbach & Claudia Griesbach-Martucci
September 5 – December 3
ICE HOUSE GALLERY Opening Reception: Sept. 29, 7-9 PM In 2000, Cheryl Griesbach began creating a body of paintings based on her interests in European 18th and 19th century still-life, botanical and landscape art. Her method includes the manipulation of segments of Northern European paintings and incorporating that imagery in building a new landscape, like a stage. Following in her parent’s footsteps Claudia Griesbach also attended the School of Visual Arts and with her background in illustration and oil painting, a skill she learned from her mother, each of her paintings tells a story. In her most recent work she explores the notion “that behind every exquisite thing that exists there is something tragic,” a quote from Oscar Wilde’s Portrait of Dorian Gray.

MAUNDERINGS BY TONYA D. LEE
January 16 – March 23
ICE HOUSE GALLERY Opening Reception: Feb. 2, 7-9 PM In this exhibition, artist and Monmouth University Art and Design faculty member Tonya D. Lee presents a collection of multi-discipline work that explores the abstraction of nature and environment through the combination of shapes, patterns, moments and pauses that are derived from passive spaces, fleeting thoughts and changing winds. Location and process are in a conversation about ephemeral moments of beauty exploring the sublime qualities of nature. Using both digital and analog methods of constructing compositions, Lee’s intent is to explore the aesthetic oppositions of rigidity and gesture where form and color exist as object and subject.
Oceanids BY JOSEPH COSCIA JR. January 16 – March 11
RECHNITZ HALL’S DIMATTIO GALLERY Opening Reception: Jan. 26, 7–9 PM Oceanids are some 3,000 nymphs in Greek mythology who watch over fresh water, rain, clouds, lakes, springs and rivers, as well as pastures, breezes and flowers. Coscia, the Chief Photographer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art has spent countless hours with classical sculptures, photographing them in various settings and seasons. He focuses on the qualities of light on sculpture in changing conditions, and the shifting effects of natural light on stone surfaces. His recent work draws on Man Ray’s solarization techniques. This effect reverses the shadow areas and transforms the sense of weight and volume of the objects, so that they appear suspended in air or water. The forms are evocative of earthly creatures or fossils; photographing and printing them using recreated old photographic techniques removes time specificity, so that they also are suspended in time.
This event is part of the Grammy Museum Affiliate series. See page 37 for more information

THE JAMES FIORENTINO TRAVELING ART EXHIBITION January 13 - February 19 POLLAK GALLERY Opening Reception: February 9, 7-9 PM
As a universal language, the arts have always been an effective tool for addressing social issues. Artivism or "activist art" is a form of social protest that explores cultural and political concerns. However, it is much more than just an innovative tactic, Artivism involves an entire a practice that attempts to inspire positive change in society. This juried exhibition will feature works of art that employ spectacle, symbolism and collective participation to fight for issues of social justice including racial discrimination, gender equality, fair labor practices, human rights and more. Images: (Top) Barred Owl, James Fiorentino, 28" x 17", watercolor (Bottom) The Road Back from the Holocaust Suite Circa, Jacob Landau, Lithograph, circa. 1967
The youngest artist ever inducted into the prestigious New York Society of Illustrators, Fiorentino uses his trademark detail and realism in watercolor to paint New Jersey’s most endangered and vulnerable wildlife species. His evocative artwork inspires viewers through his life-like depictions of rare wildlife in their natural surroundings. His paintings truly bring wildlife to life on paper, and in doing so, his art helps to educate and engage viewers about the precipitous declines that many of these species have undergone. This exhibition is presented in partnership with Conserve Wildlife Foundation.
