10 Anniversary Season TH

2015-16

WELCOME to Monmouth University’s Center for the Arts! This year, we are celebrating our tenth-anniversary season with a stellar lineup of artists joining us from all corners of the world to perform and share their work on our beautiful campus. Over the years, we’ve made it our mission to feature a wide range of cultures and styles of artistic expression in our theaters and galleries. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this season’s Performing Arts Series is no different as it features a mix of sounds from Africa, Ireland, France, and New Zealand, along with classic Victorian characters and modern Indian drama, Native American dance and music, and contemporary Americana, not to mention chamber ensembles, a little street-corner soul, and some of our favorite Monmouth County music makers. Come experience art in the most intimate of settings for performances up-close and personal where it seems as though it’s just you and the artist; for question-and-answer sessions that give insight and background about the artist’s creative process; and for workshops with handson learning experiences for novices, amateurs, and professionals alike. Experience opera like you’ve never seen it before, broadcast LIVE in real time on our 30-foot-wide screen directly from the Met in New York City. You can also view the National Theatre of London and the Bolshoi Ballet LIVE in HD. And when you do, you will feel as though you are on the stage with the artists themselves—that’s how incredible these screenings are! The Center features a dozen major art exhibits annually—three or four simultaneously—a Visiting Writers Series celebrating its tenth year, Art Now, which takes a modern approach to multimedia arts, Children’s Theatre, student productions, our Film Series, Summer Theatre, and much much more. Partnerships, such as our affiliation with the Grammy Museum in LA, enhance our programming capabilities, enabling us to provide symposia, conferences, films, and exhibitions that address cultural icons such as Frank Sinatra and Bruce Springsteen. It’s all right here waiting for you to discover—a real jewel in a beautiful setting, easy, convenient, enlightening, inspirational, and fun! Sincerely,

COWBOY JUNKIES

Fri. October 2 at 8 PM | Pollak Theatre Tickets: $40; $50; $60 (Gold Circle) It's been 30 years since the Cowboy Junkies led by siblings Margo, Michael and Peter Timmins on vocals, guitar and drums respectively, plus Alan Anton on bass —performed their first gigs at various Toronto clubs. For three decades, the Cowboy Junkies have remained true to their unique artistic vision and to the introspective, quiet intensity that is their musical signature, creating a critically acclaimed body of original work that has endeared them to an audience unwavering in its loyalty. Joined by multiinsturmentalist Jeff Bird, The core Cowboy quartet returns to Monmouth for a retrospective of their three decades playing all manifestations of popular music. Expect an evening that runs the gamut from the folky intimacy of the band’s earliest efforts, to an always surprising selection of covers (Springsteen, Stones, Talking Heads, The Cure) — although to be sure, simply delivering “the expected” has never been part of the Cowboy Junkies' playbook.

Established in 1993, this six member company embodies all the artistry of the world renowned choreographer, Paul Taylor, representing the wide range of athleticism, humor and emotion found in his work. “Taylor 2 is wonderfully intimate. Watching these dancers perform Taylor works clearly reveals both structure and movement for an eye-opening appreciation of the master’s approach. "It’s like hearing Mozart played on original instruments, or birds in the woods without traffic noise. There’s an authenticity about them that also speaks with the voice of authority: It’s easy to see why Taylor’s work stood out from the crowd right from the start. OBSERVATIONS OF PREDATION IN HUMANS: A LECTURE BY DR. ZIRA, ANIMAL PSYCHOLOGIST Wed. November 18 at 4:30 PM Pollak Theatre FREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

The Chimp psychologist from Planet of the Apes is back! Zira travelled back in time to visit us 20 years ago and narrowly escaped death at the hands of the paranoid humans who could not tolerate the idea of other primates as equals. After living in seclusion for 20 years and conducting ethological studies of our species from her hideout, she has emerged in order to share her findings relating to aggressive behavior in members of the home genus.

Coco Fusco is an interdisciplinary artist and writer and MIT’s MLK Visiting Scholar for 20142015. She is a recipient of a 2013 Guggenheim Fellowship, a 2013 Fulbright Fellowship, and her performances and videos have been presented in two Whitney Biennials, BAM’s Next Wave Festival and numerous international Biennials and festivals. 36

GRAMMY MUSEUM AFFILIATION

In October of 2014, Monmouth University was named the fourth higher education affiliate of the Los Angeles-based GRAMMY Museum. The partnership provides students, faculty, and staff access to GRAMMY Museum content for educational purposes, curriculum resources, research programs, professional development seminars, collaborative marketing and promotions, project-based learning, and unique student internship opportunities. The new connection creates opportunities for students such as internships, research programs, employment and accessibility to talent for events and production. This partnership has resulted in several special events hosted by Monmouth University including the Frank Sinatra symposium and photo exhibit last spring and the upcoming Bruce Springsteen photo exhibit in Rechnitz Hall this fall. Stay tuned for additional events and educational opportunities to be added throughout the year as a result of our Grammy Museum affiliation.
