to Monmouth Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Center for the Arts! The 2016 -17 season brings a collection of cultural experiences that deliver a world of music, movement, images, words and ideas to the doorsteps of the coastal New Jersey audience. It is also the start of a new chapter for the Pollak Theatre, the flagship performance venue on the Monmouth campus. A 2016 makeover saw the Pollak fitted with new carpeting, new paint, 700 new seats, and a larger, deeper stage area which will enhance the live performance experience from both sides of the stage, with better sight lines all around, and the ability to accommodate larger-scale productions. The new season also includes some exciting programming that comes out of our University Affiliation with the Grammy Museum. The alliance brings an exhibit of vintage Bob Dylan photographs by Daniel Kramer to Pollak Gallery this October as well as other exciting events. From our live shows featuring top talent in music, theatre and dance to our gallery exhibitions, film screenings and HD broadcasts to our visiting lecturers and artists there is something for audiences of all ages and interests. William Close’s Earth Harp Collective recently received massive praise and admiration after finishing third on NBC’s hit show America’s Got Talent and is now listed as the longest playable stringed instrument in the world in The Guinness Book of Records. The Earth Harp has stretched to the top of the Seattle Space Needle, to temples in Vietnam, the famous Grand Theatre of Macau, and the Colosseum in Rome. William Close, installation artist, musician, and visionary has consistently pushed the envelope between music and design, creating over one hundred new musical instruments including the famed Earth Harp. Now joined with an ensemble of musicians, he brings his majestic Harp, and many other signature instruments, to Monmouth University’s Pollak Theatre in a performance that will push the envelope of the musical experience.

CSN Songs is an ensemble of accomplished musicians who pay homage to the folk/ rock legends that revolutionized music in the 1960’s and 70’s. Shakespeare’s great comedy highlights Aquila Theatre’s 25th anniversary season. Spying, subterfuge, deception, false identities, slander, manipulation and love all take part in this wonderfully entertaining battle of the sexes. It is an exuberant, philosophical, and festive play excelling in combative wit, melodrama, and potential tragedy. Much Ado About Nothing is wonderfully intricate, flush with surprising twists and turns, and articulated in expert language. Aquila Theatre’s original Much Ado opened in Boston in 2000 and toured the United States. Beloved singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash will play a concert featuring all-time favorites and songs from her highly-acclaimed and three time Grammy winning album, The River & the Thread (2014, Blue Note Records), a collection of original songs that connect and re-connect Rosanne to the American South, the place of her birth and the home of her ancestors. Rosanne follows her acclaimed Grammy nominated and award winning album The List (2009) with her own poetic survey of places and people of the South on these beautiful and varied songs written with her collaborator, musical director, guitarist and husband, John Leventhal. On the heels of the sold-out Alice’s Restaurant 50th Anniversary Tour, Arlo Guthrie plunges into another musical trip certain to be a flashback inducing, mind-expanding show. For the Running Down The Road Tour, Arlo will again hit the road with a full band to fully embody the best of Guthrie’s catalogue from the late sixties and early seventies. Featuring the most outstanding cuts from Arlo (1968), Running Down The Road (1969), Washington County (1970) along with others, this tour exemplifies the sound that shaped a generation. When country music lovers talk about the greatest groups in the genre, Shenandoah is always at the forefront of any discussion. Fueled by Marty Raybon’s distinctive vocals and the band’s skilled musicianship, Shenandoah became well known for delivering such hits as “Two Dozen Roses”, “Church on Cumberland Road” and “Next to You, Next to Me” as well as such achingly beautiful classics as “I Want to be Loved Like That” and the Grammy winning “Somewhere in the Vicinity of the Heart” duet with Alison Krauss. Today that legacy continues as original members Raybon and Mike McGuire reunite to launch a new chapter in Shenandoah’s storied career. Shenandoah has recorded nine studio albums (3 certified gold) and placed 26 singles on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. In its 25th year, Koresh Dance Company presents Classic KORESH, a selection of favorites drawn from the company's quarter century of innovative work. These repertoire classics include interpretations of classical compositions by Bach, Beethoven, and Ravel, from the rolling strains of "Moonlight Sonata" to the trumpeting processions of "Bolero." Moments of tenderness and grace alternate with humor and brash force on this tour of highlights drawn from over 60 existing works by Artistic Director Ronen Koresh. As a unique feature of our anniversary program, Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 will feature in a newly commissioned work, "23: Deconstructing Mozart," a collaborative initiative driven by Koresh and multi-media artist Paul Miller, a.k.a. With a new album #LoveInEvolution released early this year, Grammy Award–winning female African-American a cappella group founded by Bernice Johnson Reagon in 1973, endlessly continues to evolve and cultivate the rich textures of African American musical traditions. Currently consisting of members Carol Maillard, Louise Robinson, Nitanju Bolade Casel, Aisha Kahlil, ASL interpreter Shirley Childress, and featured musician Romeir Mendez on upright acoustic bass and electric bass, the group possesses a stunning vocal prowess that captures the complex sounds of blues, spirituals, traditional gospel hymns, rap, reggae, African chants, hip hop, ancient lullabies, and jazz improvisation. The group’s collective voice, often accompanied by hand percussion instruments and bass, produces a sound filled with soulful harmonies and intricate rhythms. ANOTHER NIGHT OF A CAPPELLA HARMONY

Caladh Nua (KAH-luh NEW-ee) is a tightly-knit, vibrant and staggeringly talented band with its origins deeply rooted in the Southern counties of Ireland. Comprised of five versatile musicians and singers playing a wide selection of instruments - from banjo to fiddle, guitar to bodhran and tin whistle to button accordion - the band has captured the essential qualities of traditional Irish music and balanced them finely with an innovative contemporary flair. A long list of TV and radio broadcasts of their performances and two acclaimed recordings includes American Public Radio, the BBC, and RTE. Performing a vast repertoire of haunting songs and evocative Irish tunes, Caladh Nua is a young ensemble on the rise.

Our celebration of doo wop a cappella harmony is back by popular demand! We’ve again assembled some of the top a cappella doo wop vocal groups from NYC to Washington DC. Headlining will be Pookie Hudson's Spaniels along with Vito & the Salutations. The Spaniels are known for the 1956 million seller, Goodnight Sweetheart ,Goodnight. Originating on the streets of Brooklyn, Vito & the Salutations scored regional hits in the early 1960's with their recordings of Gloria, Unchained Melody and Your Way. New to the concert this year is the Bronx group the New Paramounts, featuring original lead Milton Delgado, who recorded Trying and Girl Friend in the late 1950's and the Copians, who are made up of former members of other standout Philly a cappella groups. Returning from last year's concert are the Philadelphia a cappella group Quiet Storm and the Piscataway group Re-MemberThen. [This line up is subject to change]

Presented in partnership with Autism Speaks NJ this special concert presentation held on World Autism Awareness Day will feature Geoff Sewell, founder of the classical crossover opera band Amici Forever and his cast of exceptionally talented Broadway performers singing favorite pieces from well-known musicals, operas and popular music. From classic opera favorites like La Traviata's Brindisi to Phantom's All I Ask of You and crowd pleasers like That's Amore, audiences will delight in the uplifting performance by the gifted vocalists of Bravo Amici. The concert will also feature a special video presentation of Sewell's song Heal Me co-written by his wife Simone and featuring daughters Olivia and Sienna (who has autism) highlighting the message that autism is treatable. This event will be held in conjunction with the Art+Autism gallery exhibition opening reception featuring juried work by artists with Autism (see event on pg. 33). A portion of the proceeds will benefit Autism Speaks NJ.

Playing a wide range of music from Dylan, Mose Allison, Muddy Waters, NRBQ, Richard Thompson, Emmylou Harris, The Band, George Jones and more, The Poor Fools also dive into some of the Southside's Asbury Jukes material–revisiting some classics as well as the underperformed deep tracks. “The Poor Fools tour is a chance for me to try out different material and some Jukes standards in an acoustic-ish form. In this incarnation, musicians such as Jeff Kazee, John Conte, John Putnam, Neal "The Dude" Pawley and I will all be singing, playing, and having some fun on stage. It will be a loose mix of songs, stories and banter between the musicians and–hopefully–the audience. With Lyon shaking up each night's setlist for himself and his gang of multi-instrumentalist band members, these troubadours ride the rails of the runaway train known as Southside Johnny and The Poor Fools.

In his nearly 50 year music career singer song-writer keyboardist “Stormin” Norman Seldin has performed at almost every major live performance venue out there and is also credited as one of the originators of the Sound of Asbury Park. In this very special production he leads a cast of all-star piano virtuosos ranging in ages 8 – 15 whose collective credits include winning Steinway competitions and Golden Key Awards, appearing on the Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey shows, performing for luminaries such as Queen Rania of Jordan and Bono of U2. From Bach to Rock and Jazz to Ragtime – fingers will blaze to amaze from start to finish – keys will surely sizzle!

Hasan Elahi is an interdisciplinary artist working with issues in surveillance, privacy, migration, citizenship, technology, and the challenges of borders. In 2002 an erroneous tip subjected Elahi to an intensive investigation by the FBI. After this harrowing experience where he was finally cleared of suspicions, Elahi conceived “Tracking Transience” and opened just about every aspect of his life to the public. The project questions the consequences of living under constant surveillance and continuously generates databases of imagery that tracks the artist and his points of transit in real-time.

Gerald Stern is the author of 16 books of poetry, including, most recently, Divine Nothingness (2014) and In Beauty Bright (2012). Other works include This Time: New and Selected Poems, which won the 1998 National Book Award, and a kind-of memoir of a year in 85 sections titled Stealing History (2012). Stern’s many awards and honors include the Wallace Stevens Award, Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry, and the Medal of Honor in Poetry by the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He was Poet Laureate of New Jersey from 2000–2002. In 2012, he was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Stern has two books coming out in 2017, a poetry collection called Galaxy Love and a book of non-fiction titled Deathwatch.

Liz Moore is a writer of fiction and creative nonfiction. Her first novel, The Words of Every Song centers on a fictional record company in New York City just after the turn of the millennium. It draws partly on Liz's own experiences as a musician. It was selected for Borders' Original Voices program and was given a starred review by Kirkus. Her second novel, Heft, was published in January 2012 to popular and critical acclaim. Moore's short fiction and creative nonfiction have appeared in venues such as Tin House, The New York Times, and Narrative Magazine. She is the winner of the Medici Book Club Prize and Philadelphia's Athenaeum Literary Award. After winning a 2014 Rome Prize in Literature, she spent 2014-15 at the American Academy in Rome, completing her third novel. That novel, The Unseen World, was published in July 2016.

Colm Tóibín is the author of eight novels, including The Master (2004) and Brooklyn (2009), now a major motion picture. His short story collections are Mothers and Sons (2006) and The Empty Family (2010). In April 2013, his play The Testament of Mary opened on Broadway with Fiona Shaw, directed by Deborah Warner and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best New Play. He has twice been Stein Visiting Writer at Stanford University and also a visiting writer at the Michener Center at the University of Texas at Austin. He also taught at Princeton between 2009 and 2011, and was Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Manchester in the autumn of 2011. He is Irene and Sidney B. Silverman Professor of the Humanities at Columbia University.

Curated by the GRAMMY Museum in cooperation with Daniel Kramer, this exhibition documents Bob Dylan's metamorphosis from folk musician to rock & roll icon through more than 50 photographs taken by New York-based photographer and film director Daniel Kramer for a year and a day during 1964 and 1965. Karina Aguilera Skvirsky's Drones, is a series of photo-collages that put flying objects into our aerial landscapes. This series includes landscapes from US, Ecuador and other unidentifiable locations. Skvirsky is a multi-disciplinary artist who works in photography, video and performance. Her work has been exhibited internationally in group and solo exhibitions. She teaches at Lafayette College and The New School, Parsons School of Design.

The Women In the World…A Visual Perspective, art exhibit ties into the theme for Women In Media – Newark’s 8th annual Women’s History Month Film Festival (see event on pg. 36), and takes a broad look at the struggles and triumphs experienced by women globally. This exhibition, exquisitely curated by the renowned Gladys B. Grauer, uses the work of a socially and culturally diverse group of New Jersey based women artists to explore this seemingly simple topic. The images in this exhibit are not necessarily intended to be a literal interpretation of the theme, rather they often offer a metaphorical relationship to the theme. This inspiring exhibit is not to be missed!

The Black Maria Film Festival was founded in 1981 as a tribute to Thomas Edison's development of the motion picture at his laboratory, dubbed the "Black Maria" film studio, the first in the world, in West Orange, NJ. Now in its 36th year, the festival attracts and showcases the work of independent filmmakers internationally. The festival is a project of the Thomas A. Edison Media Arts Consortium, an independent non-profit organization in residence at New Jersey City University's Department of Media Arts. Unlike other major film festivals, the Black Maria Festival is not presented in only one location. Instead, the winning films are presented at universities, museums, libraries and cultural centers across the country all year.
