THE HUNTS
UB40
POLLAK THEATRE
POLLAK THEATRE
Fri. October 26 ● 8 PM
Sat. November 3 ● 8 PM
Tickets: $25; $35; $50 (Gold Circle)
Known for their harmony-laced take on alt-folk, The Hunts are a Chesapeake, Virginia-based band of seven siblings who’ve been playing music together almost their entire lives. Twin sisters Jessi and Jenni and five brothers Josh, Jonathan, Jordan, Justin, and Jamison, now ranging in age from 28 down to 19, have performed at theaters and festivals including two national tours with O.A.R., Austin City Limits Music Festival, Summerfest, Landmark & Firefly - and have quickly honed their sound, crafting positive songs that move audiences. Teaching themselves to play instruments like mandolin, piano, ukulele, banjo, and drums, The Hunts started experimenting with songwriting and soon brought to life a batch of songs that reveal their sophisticated sense of melody and undeniably dreamy innocence. The Hunts hold true to a songwriting process that taps into each member’s unique strengths but remains intensely collaborative. While getting seven strong-minded brothers and sisters to agree on every last note and lyric can sometimes be chaotic, The Hunts note that the synergy born from that chaos is what makes the band so strong.
Tickets: $45; $60; $80 (Gold Circle); with VIP packages available
World-famous reggae stars UB40 are set to mark their 40th anniversary with a US tour in support of their first album release in over four years. The band will play many of their seventeen Top 10 hit singles, including Kingston Town, Food For Thought, One In Ten, I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You, Don’t Break My Heart and Sing Our Own Song and, of course, Red, Red Wine. The concert will feature five of UB40’s six founding members, Robin Campbell, Brian Travers, Jimmy Brown, Earl Falconer and Norman Hassan, and long-time members Duncan Campbell, Martin Meredith, Lawrence Parry and Tony Mullings. UB40 formed in 1978, naming themselves after the unemployment benefit form, before releasing their debut album ‘Signing Off’ in August 1980 – considered by many to be one of the greatest reggae albums ever released by a British band. The band has forty UK Top 40 hit singles, sold over 100 million records and seen their albums reside in the UK’s Top 75 album chart for a combined period of eleven years, making them one of the most successful British groups of all time.

MATT O’REE BAND Sat. February 9 ● 8 PM POLLAK THEATRE Tickets: $25; $35
Over the past few years, The Matt O'Ree Band has done what most area bands do. They've played their shows, developed their sound, released their records and very quietly built a massive fan base in the process. What makes this band different from all the others is that their local fan base includes Bruce Springsteen, David Bryan and Steve Cropper, all of whom have volunteered to perform on the band's latest album, Brotherhood. Prior to Brotherhood's release, Matt's talent was recognized globally when he got the nod to join rock legends Bon Jovi as their guitarist/backing vocalist on their 2015 stadium tour of the Far East. With John Hummel on drums, Layonne Holmes and Eryn Shewell laying down angelically gutsy backing vocals, and keyboard duties brilliantly shared by Matt Wade and Dave Archer, Matt and company have built a foundation that can hold up the biggest house on the block.

PAUL D. MILLER
ARTIST TALK WITH
Tues. October 2 ● 6 PM
Tues. January 29 ● 4:30 PM DUSTIN B. GOLTZ WILSON HALL AUDITORIUM Wed. March 27 ● 6 PM
POLLAK THEATRE (Rescheduled date) Paul D. Miller, aka DJ Spooky, will present his The Book of Ice—a multimedia performance and discussion he will stage with musicians from campus and the region. Antarctica, the only uninhabited continent, belongs to no single country and has no government. While certain countries lay claim to portions of the landmass, it is the only solid land on the planet with no unified national affiliation. Drawing on the continent’s rich history of inspiring exploration and artistic endeavors, Miller has put together his own multidisciplinary study of Antarctica. In this multimedia talk, Miller discusses his journeys to Antarctica, climate change, and the creation of The Book of Ice, using Antarctica-related data to create maps, graphics, sound, music, and multimedia performances.
SHERRILL ROLAND
While a graduate student, Sherrill Roland was wrongfully convicted and spent over 10 months in prison. Although eventually exonerated of all charges, his experiences with the justice system had a lasting effect on both his life and his artistic practice. When he returned to campus, he wore an orange jumpsuit everyday up to and during his graduation ceremony, encouraging all who encountered him and his jumpsuit to address their own prejudices toward those incarcerated. Roland uses his socially engaged artwork The Jumpsuit Project to ignite conversations around issues related to mass incarceration. In 2017, The New York Times included Roland in their list “From the Personal to the Political, 19 Artists to Watch Next Year,” and in 2018 The Studio Museum in Harlem exhibited The Jumpsuit Project, which they acquired for their permanent collection.
WOODS THEATRE
This multimedia solo performance is an examination of shifting perceptions of queer male mentorship, LGBTQ aging anxieties, and the lingering cultural threat assigned to queer sexuality. The piece is an avalanche of pop culture, flamboyance, and monstrosity—an intertextual interrogation of queer generational tensions—reclaiming a story of the monsters who refuse to die (for long), refuse to hide the histories their bodies carry, and who keep surviving through wit, camp, irreverence, and an ongoing commitment to the queer community. Dustin Bradley Goltz is an Associate Professor of Performance Studies and Communication at DePaul University in Chicago. His work examines gay aging, queer temporality, LGBTQ media representation, and personal narrative performance.
The Book of Ice is co-sponsored by Monmouth University's Urban Coast Institute, Honors School, Department of Chemistry & Physics, and Monmouth Review.

This touching comedy-drama by Robert Harling is directed by Prof. Dr. John Burke. The play visits six Louisiana women, who are delicate as magnolia flowers, but tough as steel when they must be - as they gather in their small-town beauty parlor to gossip, complain and share the joys and sorrows they face in their lives. Despite differences in age, backgrounds and attitudes; their camaraderie and sense of humor help them grow through good times and bad.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT We are committed to education, outreach, and the future of the arts in our society. As a university, education is central to our mission. Many of the Center for the Arts programs are accompanied by educational activities for university and K-12 students.
IN THE SCHOOLS
Professional artists perform in local schools, facilitating access to and participation in important cultural experiences.
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Graham Nash participates in a Q&A with Monmouth University students
High school and university students receive professional-level training through lectures, panel discussions, films, exhibitions, master classes, artist workshops, Q&As, and demonstrations facilitated by our visiting artists and performers and Monmouth University faculty and scholars. The power of the arts is undeniable. They can touch the soul, shape a future, and strengthen communities. We pride ourselves on providing access to the arts for diverse audiences.
TICKETSHARING
We make it possible for underserved populations to attend our events on campus by donating tickets to more than 50 social services organizations per year.
ACCESS TO THE ARTS
Acclaimed choreographer Carolyn Dorfman conducts a masterclass with Monmouth University dance students
We recognize the many challenges to accessing the arts, and often bring the arts directly to our community, taking our visiting artists on the road to nonprofit organizations and centers. We are working to expand our Community Engagement program through grants, sponsorships, and donations, and invite you to join us. To learn more or get involved, please contact: Karen Keene, Director of Leadership Programs at (732) 571-3475 or kkeene@monmouth.edu
