PROJECT 03 A FUEL STATION & CONVENIENCE STORES

Juja, Kiambu, Kenya Sep 2021 - Dec 2021

The challenge was to design a fuel station with convenience store along the Eastern bypass in Kenya. It consisted of pump stations, modern automobile clinic, chemist, ATM machines, food vending stalls, etc.

The design ought to have reflected eco-friendliness & environmental consciousness (sustainable development to the customers & station visitors)

My design concept was sustainability and the concept’s analogy was the growth & morphology of the snail shell. The snail shell was inspirational because of how it’s used in the production of bio-diesel which is a renewable substitute for petroleum diesel. In this way, the snail shell indirectly promotes sustainable mobility.

HAND-DRAWN PERSPECTIVE SKETCHES

The fuel station with pump stations occupies the circular centre. The idea was to have the circular roofing supported by one column upon the exploration of possible structural solutions.

The curved structure around the circular centre hosts the covenience stores, food vending stalls, automobile clinic, ATM machines, etc.

The food vending stalls are at the wider end of the curved structure.

The food vending stalls have a shared indoor/outdoor dining area/ The outdoor dining is covered by the pergola roofing system as seen below. The dining overlooks the sloping manicured landscape that ends in a river adjacent to the site.

The materials used to construct the structure include wood & masonry. Finishes range from textured paint to slated cladding stones to wood panelling systems.

Pedestrian & vehicular circulation was also considered in zoning.
