Music, Image, Marketing and the American Roots Directory For many decades, musical genres, image and marketing have been intrinsically interwoven with the creation of great music and successful careers. Consider some of the great music icons: Johnny Cash — the honest and fearless “Man in Black” of country music, Bill Monroe — the stern and proud “Father of Bluegrass,” Muddy Waters — the mighty “Mojo Man” and elder statesman of the blues. It wasn’t always that way. In the latter portion of the 19th century most people did not think of music in terms of specific genres as we do today. There was "highbrow" music which included orchestral music and opera, "popular" music that was written specifically for public consumption by professional tunesmiths, and “downhome” music that ordinary people played on their front porches. Everything changed with the arrival of phonograph records. Record manufacturers quickly realized the need to keep customers buying new records. They began to target very specific tastes, and the idea of specific musical genres was born. To reinforce the differences in swing, hillbilly, blues and the plethora of other genres, very specific and marketable images were tied to each one, and often those images did not line up with the background of the artist. The early history of the Grand Ole Opry provides a classic example. One of the Opry’s first stars, Dr. Humphrey Bate, was a trained physician from a prominent Middle Tennessee family. A lover of “old time” tunes, Dr. Bate formed a small string band and played music as a hobby. For the group’s initial Grand Ole Opry appearances, they billed themselves as “Dr. Humphrey Bate and His Augmented String Orchestra.” But as hillbilly music began to establish a marketplace identity, the band’s name changed to “Dr. Humphrey Bate and His Possum Hunters,” and their stagewear shifted from sharp-cut business suits to bib overalls and straw hats — sophistication was out and hicksville was in. Across all forms of popular music, the confluence of music, image and marketing have come together to create great music. New styles of music emerged before a marketable image was fully understood. Elvis Presley was initially viewed as a country artist but emerged as the King of Rock’n’Roll. In other cases an artist outgrew the image that initially brought them fame. In the mid-60s Bob Dylan moved away from the “protest singer” template of his early records. One of the primary goals of record companies was to nurture and develop artists, with the hope that finding the right sound, style and image would lead to success. As the music industry entered the 21st century, record labels consolidated, and new technologies threw the long-established methods of selling music into disarray. Profits had to be maximized, and what better way to do so than with manufactured-to-order artists? It was simple — create the artist, promote them for one or two records as the “hot new flavor of the month,” then discard them and repeat. The mad chase for fast profits resulted in marketing mainstream music like candy in the supermarket checkout line. Impulse buying brings a fast cash flow but cannot sustain an industry. These practices have locked the mainstream music industry in a death spiral. Both long established artists and up-and-coming musicians found themselves left to their own devices. Over the last decade, musicians have found new ways of reaching fans as well as taking on career development and support functions that were once handled by major labels. It has been a struggle for many artists, but it can be done, as evidenced by the recent break-out success of artists like Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson and Margo Price. The American Roots Directory provides a guide for independent roots music artists to connect with the music industry community. We’re not seeking to create a new genre, radio format, look, style, marketing category, merchandizing gimmick, nor do we seek to stick anyone into a box. We provide a central resource for touring bands, with the goal of opening lines of communications, unifying the roots music communities, encouraging more business and improving the value of the independent artists in an organic and grassroots way.
