HARMONIC VENTURES DESIGN HVD is the home of creativity and innovation. Combining modern design techniques with creative flair and a commitment to the environment we produce objects of beauty. Each piece is unique being hand crafted from recycled materials. Our journey began in 2016, when a young self taught artist wanted to express his creative spirit. Working solo Mugabo Aimable pioneered the technique to turn waste paper into works of art. Function and form are the key to his designs which are stylistically simple, elegant and contemporary and the materials he works with help reduce the footprint on our planet. Each piece though can fit comfortably into the modern home as a work of art or something more functional like a fruit bowl or jewelry. We also work with creatives in fashion and interior design and can custom make to order. An adventurous spirit combined with a desire to bring joy and harmony into people’s lives, with a reduced impact on the planet, is at the heart of Harmonic Ventures Design. OUR MISSION To bring joy and beauty into people’s lives through art and design, in harmony with the environment , while also venturing to share our gifts and talents to make a difference in our own community and beyond.

Samuel Shyaka
Founder, CEO and Creative Director of Harmonic Ventures Design
Assistant Manager and Production Manager
Creative, hardworking and a self-taught artist (painter, craftsman, graphic designer) Aimable is the inspiration behind Harmonic Ventures Design. His passion to express beauty in what he sees around him and to repurpose waste into art and useful products is now the foundation for his business. His aim is to make life more joyful, beautiful and eco-friendly. His work can be found at Envision Media Arts Collective in Kigali, Rwanda. 4
Samuel is an artist (painter and crafts designer) who started his professional career in 2017 at Kaanyaburanga Art Center, where he met Aimable Mugabo. When they joined Envision Media Arts Collective, they decided to collaborate and team up. He quickly learnt the art of making paper crafts and is now taking his art to the next level. He has joined Harmonic Ventures Design as an Assistant Manager and says it has changed his life.

Marketing and Promotion
Assistant and Salesperson
Cedric is a long time friend of Aimable and was keen to support him in his new venture. Learning about recycling from his friend and the importance of this for the environment and individuals convinced him of his commitment to join the team. Attending markets like Black Food Festival and Christmas Bazaar broadened his experience and belief in the products of Harmonic Ventures Design.
Cynthia brings organisational skills and an understanding of the business world having worked in a local tax collection company. But she was inspired by how Aimable was recycling waste and turning it into extra ordinary artwork. She really wanted to support this initiative in some way. Joining her friend at some of the local artisan markets and big events like the Christmas Bazaar allowed her to draw on her bubbly personality and skills in relating to customers and this encouraged her to become part of the HVD team. She is excited to be selling the message that nothing can or should be wasted along with beautiful products. 5
Step by step process

T
he first step in the paper crafts production is to cut the newspapers into strips and then to roll them into pipes using a rounded stick sort of cylindrical shape. This process usually takes at least 2 to 3 days but sometimes it can take up to a week or two depending on how many pieces I want to create. During this process, I pay particular attention to the layout of the newspaper, for example, the words that are in bold colors and separate the pages accordingly in order to use rhythm of the colors and text for the best effect on the finished product. This is part of my design, as I like to see the words of the actual newspapers on the pieces I create, as a statement of its repurposed natural beauty. 7

The case for recycling is strong. The bottom line is clear. Recycling requires a trivial amount of our time. Recycling saves money and reduces pollution. Recycling creates more jobs than landfilling or incineration. And a largely ignored but very important consideration, recycling reduces our need to dump our garbage in someone else’s backyard. – David Morris –

What happens to recyclables? •Paper is recycled into new paper. Some grades of paper can be recycled up to seven times. • Glass bottles become new glass bottles. Aluminum cans are turned back into aluminum cans, and can be recycled almost indefinitely. • Steel cans are used in other steel products such as car parts and construction materials, and can also be recycled over and over again. •Plastic bottles are recycled into carpet, clothing, auto parts, and new bottles.

FACTS ABOUT PAPER AND PAPER WASTE • • • • • • • • •
34
It takes an average of 5 liters of water to produce one piece of A4 paper. 93% of paper comes from trees. 50% of the waste of businesses is composed of paper To print a Sunday edition of the New York Times requires 75,000 trees. Packaging makes up 1/3 or more of our trash. U.S offices use 12.1 trillion sheets of paper a year. With all the paper we waste each year, we can build a 12 foot high wall of paper from New York to California Lessening paper usage was predicted due to the electronic revolution. It didn’t happen. Demand for paper is expected to double before 2030. Every tree produces enough oxygen for 3 people to breath.
