PROJECT 1 - 80 CUBE

1

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this project is to generate form and space through various methods of architectural drawing and making models with the emphasis on exploring the idea of manipulating space. The art of crafting and building as a critical design tool as part of the process must be thoroughly shown. Two words are chosen from these list of terms to commence the designing process.

Collapsing, Clustered, Cascading, Cantilevered, Carving, Colliding, Contracting, Dissolving, Enveloping, Extruding, Exploding, Expanding, Emerging, Folding, Floating, Gyrating, Intertwining, Intersecting, Imploding, Intruding, Overlapping, Pulsating, Rotating, Suspending, Sequential, Sliding, Shifting, Swirling, Submerging, Staggered, Spinning, Splitting, Stretching, Tilting, Twisting, Ripping, Puncturing, Piercing, Weaving

Accordingly, the selected words must be fully researched and articulated to develop a detailed understanding of them. Hence, the final product will be congruent with the two terms.

PROJECT 2 - “… FOR THE …”

10

INTRODUCTION This project requires students to design a dwelling for a client which is given to them by the lecturers. The clients vary from historical figures, artists to even fictional characters. Therefore, students have to conduct a full analysis on their client since they need to design a specific space in which their client can eat, sleep, wash, work or play. Therefore, every aspect of the client including how their profession shapes their way of living has to be researched. Accordingly, the following has to be taken into into consideration when designing the dwelling :

-

CLIENT SITE EXTERIOR INTERIOR

In the end, the dwelling has to appropriate in a sense that it is contemporarily relevant to the current era.

11

Marco Polo #CLIENT POSTER Basically, my client is Marco Polo and this poster basically describes his characteristics and what he did during his life.

A combination of Eastern and Western architecture in terms of cultural and psychological aspects since he had experienced differing ways of living through his journey.

Needs to be fortified to ensure his safety since he is an envoy to Kublai Khan who has many enemies.

#CLIENT POSTER

Dwelling Functions

As for the aspects of environmental quality, changing needs and universality the dwelling has to be able to survive through harsh conditions and adaptable to any situation like Marco himself.

The second page of my client poster on the other hand describes the functions that my client should have in his dwelling.

A mobile dwelling might coincide with the functions of Marco’s operational day to day lifestyle aside from future expansions. MUHAMMAD ASYRAF BIN JASMI 110050420

This worcl is the present pa:ticiple o'f 'fold vrihich describes the act of bending something relatively flexible or flat over on iiself so that one part.of it covers another thr-rs changing the original form of the object in terrns of size an.j shape.

This acljective originates from the wor"d float which is defined as the act of being buoyant or suspended in liquid or air, lt rneans that an object or substance rrranages tc rest or move on or near the surface of a liquid withoui siriking aside.from beirig abie to move or horrer e iowiy in the ai:" without faiftng thus defying gravity.

CONCLUSION Basically in the end, I have gained a lot of insight from both of these projects which helped me a lot in understanding more about the principles and key elements in designing. These projects were also very thought provoking since they allowed me to explore various ways in manipulating spaces especially in the 80 Cube project. Lines, planes and volumes play a major role in determining how a space is constructed while also being consistent with the chosen descriptive words. Aside from that, circulation is also a key factor in this project due to the fact that it is habitable. So, appropriateness has to be considered while designing. However, this acted as a guideline for me in designing so that I maintain control while never losing sight of my true aim for this project. Regarding the second project, there is never a right or wrong in terms of the design but there are things that must always be considered such as the client himself, the site context, construction materials and so forth. Consequently, precedent studies were a crucial method in helping me design since they provided me with a lot of inspiration to keep moving forward. Somehow, I also managed to relate to my client through this project as it helped me to comprehend him thoroughly in terms of behaviour and lifestyle. Hence, a dwelling that only he himself could live in can be constructed. In brief, my perspective on everything generally has been drastically widened since I learned that there is always more than a single way to solve a problem if we tried searching for it.
