The Lost of Historical Streetscape Image

The Hanoi Old Quarter is a district with 1,000 years of history, which has grown rapidly in recent years as an international tourism destination with its historical townscape as a tourism resource. However, the characteristics of HOQ also gradually changed . Therefore, how to deal with the HOQ in order to preserve its unique values while still ensuring the living needs of residential communities and urban development goals is an urgent issue. This study focuses on The 36 Streets’ streetscape design by expressing the current challenge and providing tectonic solution and possibilities.

The challenges:

Lack of awareness among local.

Lack of guideline for building renovation and restoration

Less traditional building development. Many of the rebuilding projects are for conversions into hotels.

Somehow i feel like Im in Kuala Lumpur city... Why are the historic buildings being left in ruins?

The Sense of Place in

George Town’s Streets, Penang

George Town Conservation Strategy-

On 7 July 2008, George Town was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (WHS), and it is now the capital city of the Malaysian state of Pulau Pinang. The city has a great collection of historic buildings in diverse styles, as well as numerous nationalities that have settled over the years, including Chinese, Indians, Arabs, local Malays, and others (Zaharai, 2018). Therefore, conservation strategies to preserve the heritage image and value are critical. As a result, the government and planners have published a comprehensive design guideline in order to control the evolution of the town and raise local awareness about the necessity of conservation. The content of the guidelines including:

• The architecture style.

• Typology of the building,

• Building material.

• The historical timeline and value, etc.

The theory of the Sense of Place“Sense of place is either the intrinsic character of a place, or the meaning people give to it, but, more often, a mixture of both. Some places are distinctive through their physical appearance ...; others are distinctive, but have value attached to them ... A final element is our own experience of that place” (Susan, 2004). According to this theory, three elements must be present in order to achieve a “sense of place.”

STREETS COMMERCIAL

Even though we live in the modern day, street vending remains one of the most important jobs in George Town, making it a tourist magnet. As a result, hawkers are permitted to operate on heritage streets.

ROOF DESIGN & SUSTAINABLE CONTROL

Pitch roofs, like other shophouses in South East Asia, are the most appropriate type of roof for catering to tropical conditions by providing shading, sheltering the user from rain, and more. As a result, every shophouse is obliged to have a pitch roof.

The Ideal Image for Hanoi’s Old Quater

According to Canadian place theorist Edward Relph, a real sense of place is frequently found in the experiences of painters who strive to transmit their own perspective toward place through their artworks. Using this concept as a platform, this study sheds some light on one aspect of architectural aesthetics through a study of the interrelationship between visual art, architecture, and place. We look at the work of two Hanoi painters, Bui Xuan Phai, to show how place identity and local architecture are depicted in paintings.

Hanoi’s Old Quarter Streetscape Applying “Sense of Place” in

Physical Feature

In order to implement the Sence of Place Theory in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, a comprehensive case study of George Town Penang was conducted as an example of preservation strategy. The study found that the government and planners produced a thorough design guideline to manage the evolution of the town and create local knowledge about the need of conservation.

The content of the guidelines including:

The architecture style. Typology of the building, Building material. The historical timeline and value, etc.

As a result, this study will identify the component required to produce design guidelines and control in order to preserve the Old Quarter’s sense of place.

The roof should be designed in the Chong Diem style. It is a pitch roof in the traditional Vietnamese style that efficiently adapts to the country’s weather and climate.

Summary

The conservation of heritage buildings requires knowledge and understanding of the resources and the history they represent. Conservation necessitates efficient resource management as well as a systematic approach to conservation activities. Conservation tasks must therefore be conducted with considerable sensitivity and skill in order to maintain the exceptional qualities of building materials, architecture, and craftsmanship. The Hanoi Old Quarter (HOQ) is a valuable urban asset that must be preserved. However, the social characteristics of HOQ, particularly the streetscape, have changed throughout time. The current state of HOQ is as follows: population density is too high; traditional functions have been transformed; space, architecture, and landscape have been warped, and its characteristic elements are progressively being lost. Many prior researchers have stated that the preservation of HOQ is extremely important; the interaction between heritage conservation and urban development must be properly addressed; and both the physical and intangible elements must be conserved concurrently.

In this study, George Town, Penang, which has been recognised by UNESCO World Heritage Site (WHS), was chosen as the precedent study to determine what strategies are possible to conserve heritage sites. In this study, the Sense of Place theory was adapted to determine the elements required to accentuate the character of a place and its meaning to its people. As a result of this case study’s findings, the city of George Town has released a comprehensive design guideline in order to manage the evolution of the town and promote local knowledge about the need of conservation. The rules’ content includes the architecture style, typology of the building, building materials, historical timeline, and other characteristics that also have been described in the three elements of Sence of Place (Physical Feature, Meaning & Activities).

As a result, the case study technique has been utilised in Hanoi Old Quarter (HOQ) in order to preserve their historical site. This study demonstrates that Hanoi’s Old Quarter has its own distinct identity that is rich in history, architecture, social, and lifestyle aspects. Several design controls have been highlighted in order to regulate the evolution of the streetscape, including architecture style, environmental design, commercial activity, signage design, and sidewalk function. For future development of this field, more efforts should be undertaken by all sectors to educate the people about heritage conservation
