THE PROTECTOR

Protecting Lives By Adapting To The Unfavourable Nature

Rather than avoiding an inevitable disaster, life can be preserved through adapting to the unfavorable environment. This is where architectural intervention comes into the picture in order to create future flood-resilient buildings. The primary purpose of this thesis is to design a flood relief centre that is resilient in terms of human programmes and needs, disaster management, and architectural innovation. The Adaptive Flood Relief Centre serves as a light for the locals to improve their daily life not just during normal days, but also during flood events.

What?

Flooding is an unavoidable disaster; consequently, floodresistant buildings must be developed.

Modular Unit Shelter

The shelter is designed in a modular layout to provide privacy for evacuees or students during their staycation. The key benefit of this modular system is that it is simple to put together and take apart depending on the situation.

Pontoon Jetty

To accommodate the flood level on catastrophe day, a pontoon jetty at level 1 (on the lake) of the building is planned as the evacuee arrival point.

Rain Water Harvesting Roof

The roof design (Pitch Roof) not only reflects the village’s traditional image, but it has also been developed as a rain water collector that can be used to irrigate landscaping, flush toilets, wash automobiles, or launder clothes, and it can even be cleansed for human use.

Natural Feature When dealing with a disaster, natural features are also important in reducing the impact of flooding. Large trees have been planted around the structure to protect it from direct strong winds, which can damage it and affect user comfort.

The boat and the custommade basket are moved vertically by a mechanical pulley system, allowing the things to be placed well above the flood level of the water.

The proposed building incorporates a number of programmes targeted at preventing and minimising flood damage for the communities. This section demonstrates that the structure provides private staycations for evacuees even on catastrophe days. Not to mention that it has a gathering point where evacuees may gather to acquire food and participate in community involvement.

FUTURE NOSTALGIA:

Vertical Cultural Expo In Kampong Bharu

The number of people suffering from urban gentrification conflict is rising day by day across the globe including Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur has experienced the fastest rate of city development, with the aim of transforming the city into a world-class, smart, and intelligent city. Nonetheless, the planning places less emphasis on tradition and heritage which may lead to cultural genocide. The Malay Pulse Tower was designed to serve as a centre piece for gathering talented people from the culture-related informal industries in order for them to celebrate and promote their culture and heritage. The building’s concept is “Past-future Hybridization,” which means that tradition and modernity can coexist without overwhelming one other. This architectural intervention considers a new possibility of an expo tower inspired by Malay architecture elements while also providing collaborative spaces compatible with modern entertainment and technology.

Building Perspective

The Creative Modular is a series of modular exhibition pods that allow the informal businessman to self-decorate their own space according to their own creativity. As a starting point, the modular will provide the occupant with a basic supportive structure, floor, and stair.

Kampung Alley is the mezzanine floor of The Creative Modular.

Due to the sensitivity of Malay tradition, the goal is to give a private space for businessmen, particularly women.

The Green level is a break floor that provides green space to helplower building temperature andincrease humidity. Furthermore, itacts as an opening to allow windto pass through the building, reducing wind pressure and load.

The Grand Entrance

The Grand Entrance serves as a welcoming entrancefor visitors and adds to the fun vibes. It includes an exhibition area, a teaser poster, and a smaller versionof the mechanical gallery.

Mechanichal Gallery is a modernmethod that contributes to the evolution of cultural exhibitions in the building. The functionallows the Treasure Box to be rotated vertically in the building, increasing visitor curiosity and enjoyment.

Treasure Box is a series of custom boxes that store and display Malay cultural items. The box was then hung at theMechanical Gallery and rotatedin as building’s moving facade.

A LED screen was built to the promote culture celebrationand hence improve visitorexcitement. The screen was supported by steel panel thatbeen attached to building beamand floors.
