On March 8, 2011, Mujeres Autosustentables was invited by the Municipal President and the DIF (Integral Family Development Agency) of Atlixco, Puebla, to help commemorate Women’s Day. Through a series of workshops Mujeres Autosustentables provided the women from this community valuable sewing lessons, and had the opportunity to discuss and answer questions regarding the apparel industry. The event was inaugurated by the President of DIF – Atlixco, C. Cynthia Leticia Villanueva, who has provided her unconditional support to the women of the area.

The Municipal President of Atlixco, Puebla, Ricardo Camacho, addressed the group of women present at the event and invited them to set specific goals to strive for in their lives, and to work hard in the pursuit of these goals “without ever losing faith in their ability to accomplish them.�

In their efforts to curb the incidence of breast and cervical cancer and to promote healthy living, the local government offered free medical checkups to the event participants.

A group of teens, aged 15-18, laboriously dedicated themselves throughout the morning to learn how to assemble a skirt. Once completed, they proudly displayed the skirt to their families and friends since this was the first garment they ever made, an experience that is now motivating them to learn more about this noble and lucrative job.

Aside from sharing and promoting the apparel industry for all women, Mujeres Autosustentables also gave away several DVD Training Courses to the groups that participated in the workshops – who also took the articles of clothing they assembled throughout the day.
