AT MARIAN UNIVERSITY The Marian University Physical Education Center is the home of the Marian University Department of Athletics. The “Castle” houses the administrative offices and is the home to the men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and volleyball teams. The P.E. Center also houses the athletic training facilities as well as the John and Mary Beth Adams Fitness Center. The gymnasium at the Physical Education Center has seen Mid-Central College Conference Tournament championship game in 2000-01 when the Knights defeated Huntingotn, 72-71, to earn a berth in the NAIA National Tournament. The men’s team also earned a berth in the 2003-04 NAIA National Tournament when the Knights clinched the MCC regular season title at the Physical Education Center. That year, the Knights advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NAIA National Championship.

The 2005-06 team hosted eventual NAIA National Runner-up Huntington on Homecoming and defeated the Foresters by a 91-76 score when they were ranked number two in the NAIA Division II Coaches’ Poll. The floor at the P.E. Center underwent renovation in 2005-06 with the addition of the athletics logo at midcourt. The university undertook a full-scale renovation to the P.E. Center in 2007 that added a locker room for the football team, a cardiovascular fitness room on the second floor and a brand new foyer area to entertain prospects and provide a space for student-athletes to lounge before they prepare for practice. In 2010, the addition of new state-of-the-art scoreboards and shot clocks has truly added a new dimension to the gym. The expansion of the Physical Education Center is further example that Marian University is On the Move and Making History!

Marian University head men’s basketball coach John Grimes can be considered an Indiana coaching legend. Entering his 35th season of coaching, Grimes has placed himself as one of the longest tenured and most competitive coaches in the state of Indiana. Grimes has won more than 500 games in his 34 seasons and his 530 victories rank him 16th all-time in NAIA history. Grimes has devoted his professional life to Marian University with 34 years of coaching and another 26 years as director of athletics. His passion for seeing student-athletes excel on the court and in the classroom has brought him adulation from the Marian University community. Not only is he the winningest coach in any sport at Marian University, but his dedication and commitment to the department of athletics is unquestioned. In his 34 seasons in charge of the men’s basketball program, Grimes has been lauded as Mid-Central College Conference Coach of the Year on five occasions, has earned three MCC regular season titles and two MCC Tournament titles. He has also led the Knights to three appearances at the NAIA National Tournament, including an Elite Eight run in 2000-01 and a Sweet Sixteen run in 2003-04. He has led the Knights to four victories over the NAIA’s topranked programs and the biggest victory in school history. The Knights hosted Butler University in 1980 and went on to defeat the Bulldogs by a 58-56 score. Not to mention, the Knights’ 9176 victory over Huntington University, the eventual national runner-up, when the Foresters were ranked in the top five in the nation. MU reached the number two ranking during the 2000-01 season, which is the highest in school history. That season brought the best record, 25-4, in school history and was the second-best finish in the state of Indiana that year. His leadership has brought Marian University a pair of first-team All-Americans, a pair of second-team All-Americans and two third-team All-Americans. Grimes’ passion for defense led the Knights to the fifth-best team defense in 2004 and the ninth-best in 2005. During his tenure at Marian University, both as head coach and director of athletics, he took the department from six competitive varsity sports to 18 varsity sports by 2005. His career as director of athletics culminated in 2005 when he was named NAIA Region VIII Athletic Director of the Year. retired as director of athletics after the 2004-05 season. His coaching career began at Olivet College in 1971. He spent six seasons with Olivet as an assistant football and assistant basketball coach. A native of Terre Haute, Indiana, Grimes graduated from Gerstmeyer High School in 1963. He lettered in three varsity sports: baseball, basketball, and football. His success on the gridiron led him to Indiana State University, where he competed all four years as a tight end and graduated with a bachelor of science in health and physical education in 1968. Grimes spent the next two years of his life dedicated to the United States as a military policeman in the U.S. Army. He capped his education by earning a master of science in health and physical education in 1971 from ISU. While earning his master’s degree, he served as a graduate assistant coach for the Sycamores football program. Grimes is married to his wife of 34 years and the couple has two adult children and two grandchildren. They reside in Brownsburg, Indiana.

In his eighth year at Marian University, Scott Fleming is an assistant coach for men’s basketball, head softball coach, and co-director of intramural athletics for the department of athletics. Fleming is one of the most successful head coaches at Marian University and has been a stalwart figure when it comes to Knights men’s basketball. He has garnered a 166-94 overall record in six seasons at the helm of the softball program and has been named Mid-Central College Conference Coach of the Year twice. He has tallied and MCC Tournament championship and, last season, his first career MCC regular season championship. The Knights finished last year with an all-time best 42-6 overall record, the program’s first-ever unblemished 16-0 MCC record, but finished just one spot out of the NAIA National Tournament. As an assistant basketball coach, Fleming focuses his efforts on the development of the perimeter players as distributors and shooters. As a point guard at Marian University, Fleming ranks as one of the all-time leaders in assists on a team that head coach John Grimes describes as one of his best in all of his years. While his work is not limited to the perimeter players, Fleming also works with the post players on positioning, footwork and finishing at the basket. During his tenure with Marian University, Fleming also spent seven years as an admission counselor and as an assistant director of admission. He also served as a volunteer coach for men’s basketball for six years and for women’s basketball for one year. During his six years as head softball coach, Fleming has compiled a record of 101-71. Fleming, a 1989 graduate of Marian University, is married to Gina, a 1993 graduate of Marian University, and the couple resides in Indianapolis with their two sons.
Jesse McClung is in his third season as an assistant coach at Marian University. McClung currently serves as the director of the 21st Century Scholar program at Marian University. He brings considerable experience to the position after he competed at Ball State University for his first three years of college. He finished his eligibility at the University of Indianapolis. McClung was a three-year starter for Lawrence North High School, was named to the Indianapolis Super Team, and was named a member of the Top 20 in the state of Indiana. McClung served as a graduate assistant coach for two years at the University of Indianapolis before coming to Marian University. He graduated from Ball State University and completed the requirements for a masters of arts in applied sociology from the University of Indianapolis in 2008. He resides in Indianapolis.

ATHLETIC TRAINING | ACADEMICS | ATHLETICS | MARIAN UNIVERSITY | HISTORY | 2010 KNIGHTS | STAFF | KNIGHTS MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Marian University men’s basketball team is coming off its best season since the 2004-05 season after the Knights closed the 2009-10 season by winning four of their last six regular season games to finish the year 13-15 overall and 5-11 in the Mid-Central College Conference. Thirty-fifth year head coach John Grimes is excited about the 2010-11 season after bringing in a strong recruiting class to compliment a stellar group of returners. The team returns 11 from last season and has a core of five seniors to lead the Knights this season. Coach Grimes expects the senior class to lead the Knights this season due to their experience in big games and situations. SENIORS Senior Jordan Tucker, an All-Conference second team selection last season, returns after a season in which he became the 30th Knight to surpass 1,000 career points and led the team in scoring with 15.8 points per game in 31.2 minutes. Tucker tallied double figures 14 times last season and scored more than 20 points on five occasions. He finished second on the team in rebounding with 4.5 boards per game and had 36 steals on the season. Tucker has the ability to step back and shoot the three or drive to the basket for the high percentage shot and will provide scoring punch for the Knights in 2010-11. Senior Anthony Furlin, who averaged just under 30 minutes per contest, also returns for his final season after 2009-10 campaign in which he averaged 11.7 points per game to finish as the third-leading scorer last season. Furlin shot 41 percent from the field and 36 percent from three-point range. He will provide scoring punch on the perimeter for the Knights. Senior Brandon Malone returns for his senior season after a year in which he led the Knights’ defense and ran the point last season. He averaged a team-high 2.4 assists per game and 4.6 points per game in 2009-10. Coach Grimes knows he will get a significant contribution from Malone on the defensive end of the floor, but he will look to Malone to provide another option on the offensive end during his senior season. Senior Matt Allee also returns for his final season after
7
a roller coaster career that has seen him suffer injury and return as a more powerful leader on the floor. Allee averaged 5.5 points per game in 23.1 minutes per game last season, and Coach Grimes expects Allee to be the team leader in 2010-11. JUNIORS Junior Alex Sylvester and redshirt junior Curtis Clem are the lone returning juniors. Clem redshirted last season and Coach Grimes expects a solid contribution from him this season. Sylvester was the team’s second-leading scorer (13 ppg) in 2009-10 and shot 43 percent from the field. He also shot 41 percent from three-point range to lead the Knights. Sylvester was not only a strong shooter for the Knights, he also finished the season as the team’s leading rebounder with 5.1 boards per game. Additionally, he handed out nearly two assists per game. SOPHOMORES Sophomore Matt Dickerson leads a quartet of sophomores back for their second seasons. Joining Dickerson are sophomores Mac Fiely, Donnie Abrams and Michael Barton. Dickerson is a post player who saw action in all 28 games last season. He shot 46 percent from the field and averaged 6.7 points per game while averaging just under four rebounds per contest. His development on the block is vital to the Knights’ success this season. Barton has spent the off-season shedding weight and working on his strength and agility under the basket. While he only averaged 1.4 points per game in 24 contests, Coach Grimes is looking for Barton to have a breakout season in 2010-11. Fiely, a 6-6 swingman, saw time in 20 contests last season and averaged 8.1 points per game. He is a player that can post up on the block and step back from threepoint range with consistency. Coach Grimes expects Fiely to step up and become a vital part to the development of the program this season. Abrams is a 6-8 post player in which Coach Grimes sees a high level of talent. Abrams only saw time in nine games
and averaged 2.1 points last season, but his touch from mid-range combined with his power under the basket provide the Knights another low post option in 2010-11.
2010-11 SCHEDULE The Knights, once again, have a brutal schedule as a member of the Mid-Central College Conference. A pair of matchups with the defending NAIA Division II national TRANSFERS champion University of Saint Francis (Ind.) on Jan. 4 and A trio of transfers will bring size and scoring ability to Feb. 1 highlight the loaded regular season schedule. Sullivan comes to Marian University from Joliet Junior College and will bring depth to the post positions. The 6-4 sophomore has a strong leaping ability and Coach Grimes believes he has the potential to become a strong Latest News player this season. Lickliter comes to Marian University from the University of Iowa after averaging 1.2 points per game as a redshirt freshman at Iowa. Lickliter will provide depth at the already strong perimeter position and his shooting accuPhoto Galleries racy will come in handy throughout the campaign. Grimes and his staff brought in a trio of freshmen for the 2010-11 season, and the staff believes they will immediately contribute in their rookie seasons. FRESHMEN Freshman Jake Stafford is a 6-4 post player that Coach Grimes believes will contribute quickly. He has the ability to shoot the mid-range jumper as well as take the ball strong to the bucket. The staff believes Stafford could become a key player in the rotation this season. Freshmen Drew Adams and Chris Roberts bring depth and shooting accuracy to the perimeter position. Adams earned fourth team All-State honors last season and has strong dribbling and shooting abilities. Roberts is a sharp-shooter from Zionsville, Ind., that Coach Grimes knows will work well within the Marian University system.

THE HISTORY The Marian University men’s basketball team turned some heads throughout the 1997-98 season. While they were not the Mid-Central College Conference regular season champions, the Knights did earn their first-ever trip to the NAIA National Tournament by going to Mishawaka, Indiana, and doing the unthinkable. However, there were 27 games before that program history-changing game. The Knights opened the season with a 7-1 record as Scott Miller averaged a little over 26 points per game. A defeat to the University of Chicago did not deter the Knights as they rattled off five straight wins to move to 12-2 on the season and 3-0 in the Mid-Central College Conference. A defeat to the defending NAIA Division II national champion and MCC foe Bethel College sparked a six-game winning streak as the Knights moved to 18-3 on the season and 9-1 in MCC play. The MCC regular season title was lost when Bethel came to Indianapolis to complete the season sweep. A win over Indiana Wesleyan was followed by back-to-back defeats to Taylor and Huntington to close the regular season. However, a 19-6 regular season and a 10-4 MCC record was good enough to allow the Knights a spot in the MCC Tournament. A win over Grace in the opening round set up a matchup with Goshen College and the Knights earned the semifinal win to set up a third game with the reigning national champs at their place. In the game that changed the program forever, the Knights defeated Bethel by a 110-105 score in a shootout at Gates Gymnasium in Mishawaka, Indiana, to book their spot in their first-ever NAIA National Tournament. The win gave MU a 22-6 overall record, the best-ever at the time, and a trip to the NAIA Tournament. A first-round defeat to Black Hills State greeted the Knights, but the program’s history was forever altered with the 1997-98 season.
1997-98 NAIA Tournament Participants 12
Hard work and effort lead to sweet rewards. That describes the 2000-01 men’s basketball team. Four years prior, head coach John Grimes recruited four talented, untested high school seniors to play at Marian University. They were put on a team with some big-hearted players that would work very hard and give 110 percent each time they stepped on the floor. The rewards for that team were a Mid-Central College Conference championship, a Mid-Central College Conference Tournament title, a trip to the NAIA National Tournament and a No. 2 ranking in NAIA Division II men’s basketball. The team set three goals prior to the 2000-01 season: (1) win the MCC title, (2) win the MCC Tournament and (3) go to Branson, Missouri for the NAIA Division II National Tournament. They achieved goal number one with a 72-59 win over Indiana Wesleyan and nailed down goal number two with a 72-71 win over Huntington to send the Knights to Branson, Missouri, for their second trip to the NAIA National Tournament. The Knights won their opening round contest by a 67-46 score over Belhaven College in Mississippi. Their quarterfinal matchup was Notre Dame College out of California at 10 p.m. The Knights defeated NDC by a 68-54 score to earn a trip to their first-ever NAIA Division II Elite Eight. However, the University of Rio Grande out of Ohio put an end to the dream of a berth in the Final Four with an 83-62 win over the Knights. MU stormed back from a 23-point halftime deficit to cut the lead to seven, but fatigue had set in as Rio was able to secure the Final Four berth. The Knights finished the 2000-01 season with a school-record 25-4 overall mark and an 11-3 MCC record. They went 13-1 at the Physical Education Center and earned their second-ever trip to the NAIA National Tournament. It was the greatest season in MU history and it all started with those three goals and hard work.
2000-01 MCC Champions NAIA Elite Eight
The 2003-04 season was another one for the record books in Marian University men’s basketball history. Not only was it another 20-win season for head coach John Grimes, but the Knights also won their third Mid-Central College Conference regular season championship with a school record-tying 11-3 mark. The Knights finished 22-6, the second-best season in history, and earned another trip to the NAIA National Tournament. MU opened the season with wins in its first seven games. After a defeat to Savannah College of Art and Design, the Knights won four straight to open the campaign 11-1. A defeat to rival Huntington University sparked a fivegame winning streak that moved the Knights to 16-2 overall and 7-1 in the MCC. A 10-point defeat to Taylor University and another defeat to Huntington left the Knights at 16-4 overall and 7-3 in the MCC. They would go on to win their final four games, including an 81-74 overtime thriller over Bethel in the regular season finale. A win over Indiana Wesleyan opened the tournament, but the Knights fell in the semifinals of the MCC Tournament. But, they had earned another trip to the NAIA Division II National Tournament in Branson, Missouri with a regular season record of 20-4. MU opened with Cal State-Hayward at the national championship and earned a 94-81 win behind a double-double from senior David Meece. He finished with 29 points and 10 rebounds, while senior Jeremy Budreau had a team-high five assists. However, the Knights were stymied in the second round as MidAmerica Nazarene University defeated MU, 69-57, to send the Knights crashing out of the tourney. It was another season for the books and was head coach John Grimes’ sixth career 20-win season.

THE FACILITIES
14
Marian University Baseball Field
Home to the eight-time Mid-Central College Conference champion baseball program, the varsity baseball field was built in 1980. The field, formerly Kaufman Field, is a natural grass surface featuring an all-dirt infield and base paths. The fully functional press box features public address functions, a small two-tier suite for entertaining, and a full locker room for the team. A state-of-the-art scoreboard with wireless function was added in 2008. The field also features lights for evening games and wooden bleachers for a traditional ballpark experience.
Marian University Softball Field
Home to the women’s softball program, the varsity softball field was completed in the spring of 2009. The infield is a full-dirt diamond and has a natural grass outfield. It contains a pair of fully enclosed dugouts, a full-size batting cage down the right field line, and bullpens adjacent to each dugout. It also features a state-of-the-art scoreboard with wireless control and a fully functional press box with public address capabilities. The press box rests on a strorage area that will allow storage of equipment for the adjacent tennis center and the softball field.
Marian University Tennis Courts
The home for Marian University men’s and women’s tennis was reconstructed and completed in 2008. The facility features eight outdoor courts with blue and green surfacing. The surfacing is water repellent and provides a stable court for tennis players. The original courts were reconstructed and have created a venue that allows for open viewing of tennis matches and is set against a backdrop of trees. State-of-the-art video operations have given the tennis programs the tools to continue improving to bring MU tennis to the top of the MCC.
Paul J. Norman Cycling Center
The Paul J. Norman Cycling Center is a state-of-the-art cycling training center and is home to the 11-time track cycling national championshipwinning Knights cycling program. The center is home to spin classes, training for the cycling program, and cycling services for the Marian University community. The center has Comp-U-Trainers for individual training, spin bikes for community use, and a Velotron for analysis. The recent addition of PowerBooster classes and indoor time trials has increased exposure for the cycling program and the facility.
St.Vincent Health Field
The home of Marian University football, men’s soccer, and women’s soccer is St.Vincent Health Field. The crown jewel of the Marian University Athletic Complex, St.Vincent Health Field was completed on July 1, 2009. An eightlane latex track, utilized by all sports for conditioning and track practice, encloses the artificial surface that is used by the football and soccer programs. The artificial surface, a synthetic turf manufactured and installed by ProGrass®, is home to the men’s and women’s soccer teams and football team. The facility seats 3,000 people in two stands with concessions, restrooms and team rooms on the main concourse under the main grandstand.
Adams Fitness Center
The John and Mary Beth Adams Fitness Center is the workout facility for student-athletes and the Marian University community. The lower level fitness center is a weight training area for student-athletes and the community that focuses on free-weight training. The upper level fitness center is also utilized by student-athletes and the community and focuses on the cardiovascular training provided by treadmills, step machines, and stationary bicycles. Supervisors are on hand during the school year to assist anyone during normal hours.
Football Locker Room
The Marian University football locker room provides a welcome atmosphere for student-athletes participating in football at Marian University. With more than 100 wooden lockers with space for all equipment, the MU football locker room provides ample space for the football team as well as space for meetings and film review. Each locker is assigned its own chair and the studentathlete is to maintain his assigned locker throughout the season. Built in 2007, the football locker room was one of the first signs of growth at Marian University and, with the continued growth of the program, the Knights have a great place to call home.
Western Bowl
Western Bowl will serve as the official practice facility of Marian University men’s and women’s bowling beginning in the fall of 2010. Western Bowl is a subsidiary of Royal Pin Leisure Centers and is located at 6441 West Washington Street, just 10 minutes from the Marian University campus. WesternBowl is a fully functional non-smoking bowling alley offering 36 Brunswick Pro synthetic lanes and automated scoring for a great bowling experience. THE ADMINISTRATION Under the steady guidance and watchful eye of Joe Haklin, the Marian University department of athletics has seen consistent growth and enhancement. Haklin, who is entering his sixth year as director of athletics, has overseen an unprecedented era of growth and improvement in terms of facilities and student-athlete enrollment while also establishing the department as a rich, value-based experience for its student-athletes. As the school’s first full-time director of athletics, Haklin developed a mission statement for the department of athletics and has implemented procedures that allow the department to function smoothly and achieve much success.
Joseph R. Haklin Director of Athletics
Haklin oversees a program that is committed to excellence in all facets of intercollegiate athletics: the classroom, the field of play, and in the game of life. He has been responsible for the establishment of football and men’s and women’s bowling programs at Marian University. He was also the primary facilitator for the expansion of the Physical Education Center as well as the building of St.Vincent Health Field and the renovation of the Marian University Tennis Courts. The unprecedented expansion of athletics at Marian University has seen the growth in the student-athlete population to nearly 450 student-athletes competing across the 21 varsity sports sponsored by Marian University. During his tenure, the top-class cycling team has won six national championships, including the first in the prestigious collegiate road division as well as five on the track. The Knights have improved their overall finish each year during his five years, and the department of athletics finished second in the Mid-Central College Conference Commissioner’s Cup standings in 2009-10, the highest in school history, while the football program has had a pair of winning seasons in three seasons of competition. Marian University has won nine conference championships, had five NAIA All-Americans, numerous Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athletes and All-Conference selections, and 30 NAIA Scholar Teams during Haklin’s tenure. Success has not been an issue during Haklin’s time at Marian University, but the Knights are looking for much more. With the past as evidence, the leadership of Joe Haklin will provide a stable foundation for Marian University athletics well into the future.

To help them prepare for the game and for life after the game, we ask that you please consider joining the M-Club today. Your contribution will help. Several methods and levels of contribution are available to best suit your personal preference: Cash gifts: restricted gifts to sports of choice, restricted gifts to support particular scholarships, or unrestricted gifts to the Department of Athletics Matching gifts: matching gifts from you employer or business--You receive credit for the total contribution. Gifts-in-kind: donation of goods and/or services Deferred gifts: will bequests, charitable gifts annuities, life insurance policies, etc. Other giving options: real estate, stocks, tangible property, etc. Restricting your gift: although Marian University prefers unrestricted gifts to benefit the needs of all studentathletes, we certainly understand an individual’s desire to support a particular sport. You may restrict your gift by denoting your preference(s) on the registration form. The Marian University M-Club sponsors recognition dinners for the student-athletes at the end of their respective seasons and also sponsors the annual golf outing as well as the M-Club Wall of Fame induction dinner.
