marian university tennis courts
The Marian University Tennis Courts are the home to the men’s and women’s tennis teams at Marian University. The courts underwent full reconstruction as part of the construction of St.Vincent Health Field, which was completed in 2008. The eight regulation courts were repositioned, reconfigured, and underwent a facelift. The red and green paint scheme of prior years was replaced by a blue and green paint combination. Brand new steel fencing was installed on the perimeter of the courts and in between two banks of three courts, and it also features a blue windscreen around three sides allowing one side for a comfortable viewing experience.
The completion of the Marian University Softball Field, which is adjacent to the tennis courts, gave the tennis programs space for storing court maintenance equipment and playing equipment underneath the press box. The open side of the courts allows for two sets of bleachers to be placed for an optimal viewing experience, while an open platform, utilized for hospitality at St.Vincent Health Field, is also used as a viewing deck for tennis matches where spectators can set up lawn chairs to view the matches. The courts are another sign that Marian University is On the Move and Making History!

coaching staff Cassie Mackell Head Coach
Cassie Mackell is entering her fourth season as head women’s tennis coach at Marian University. In three seasons at the helm of the program, Mackell has taken the program near the pinnacle of the conference. Last season, her team finished 15-7 overall, 6-2 in the MCC and earned a runner-up finish at the MCC Tournament. In 2009-10, she led MU to a 13-7 record and a 6-2 MCC mark, coached the ITA Midwest Regional champion and had two of her starters named All-MCC for the first time in seven years. She was named the MCC Coach of the Year in 2009-10. Mackell followed the Knights’ first-ever trip to the NAIA Regional tournament in 2007-08 with a 12-9 mark in her first season. She was without the services of two of the most successful players in school history as they had graduated before her rookie campaign, but she was able to steer the Knights to a winning season in her first year. She has a career record of 40-23 in her three seasons and has coached student-athletes who have set both single-season and career records at Marian University. A four-year player at Milligan College in Tennessee, Mackell was named the Appalachian Athletic Conference Sportswoman of the Year as a senior, which is one of the conference’s highest honors. In her four years, she went 48-18 at No. 1 singles and was named NAIA Region XII Player of the Year as a junior. She was AAC runner-up at No. 1 singles in 2003 and 2004 and was AAC champion at No. 1 doubles in 2003 and 2005. She was also named the 2006 NAIA ITA/Arthur Ashe Leader and Sportsmanship Award winner in 2006. In addition to her duties as head women’s tennis coach, Mackell serves the Department of Athletics as administrative assistant, where she oversees day-to-day operations. She is married and resides in Greenfield, Indiana.
Steve Mackell Assistant Coach
Steve Mackell enters his fourth season as assistant coach with the Knights’ women’s tennis program. Prior to the 2010-11 season, Mackell was named the seventh head men’s tennis coach in Marian University history and guided the Knights to a 5-10 mark in his first season at the helm. Mackell is no stranger to the sport of tennis. He was a four-year letter winner at Scecina Memorial High School in Indianapolis and earned team most valuable player honors in each of his four years. He attended Georgetown College in Kentucky from 2001-05 and played No. 1 singles and doubles in 2004 and 2005. He was team most valuable player in 2005 and earned all-conference honors in singles and doubles in 2004 and 2005. He is married and resides in Greenfield, Indiana.

2011 season preview Fourth-year head coach Cassie Mackell led the Knights to a 15-7 overall record and a third-place finish in the Mid-Central College Conference in 201011, but the 2009 MCC Coach of the Year wants more from the team. “Over the past three years, we have continued to improve,” said Mackell. “Last year, we placed second in the MCC Tournament and that finish has us motivated for this upcoming season. With the excitement and determination our team has, anything is possible. It will definitely be another year of fun and lasting memories.” The Knights were able to earn a berth in the first final of the MCC Tournament team championship and, after graduating just two seniors, Coach Mackell sees the 2011-12 season as an opportunity to improve. “Our ladies have been working hard over the off-season,” said Mackell. “They are putting in a lot of time and effort to make our team tougher on the court.” After losing all-time career singles wins leader in Dana Reynolds to graduation, Mackell is going to have to shuffle her lineup just a bit after another strong season. Eleven Knights return from last season with three of them being seniors. Seniors Alyson O’Conner, Maria Berry and Samantha Jo Crump will be expected to anchor the Knights’ lineup. O’Conner was the MCC champion at No. 6 singles as a freshman and has continued to make her mark on the conference. She tied the school record for doubles wins last season and holds the single-season singles wins record from her sophomore season. She is 87-40 all-time and needs just seven wins to set a new school mark for career wins. Coach Mackell expects a lot from O’Conner in 2011-12. “I expect big things from Aly this year,” Mackell said. “I anticipate that she will have a big impact in our doubles lineup.” Berry is another player that has seen time in a variety of positions in the lineup. Last season, she went 14-8 in singles play, but did not compete in doubles. As a sophomore, she set the single-season doubles wins mark and is 57-44 in her career. Mackell expects Berry to step into a leadership position during her final season of competition. “Maria’s senior leadership will help our team come together on and off the court,” said Mackell. “She does both and will continue to help push our team to be better.” Crump has seen limited action in her career, but Coach Mackell has described her as the heart and soul of the program over her career. She has seen action in 36 total matches in her career, but her positive spirit and commitment to the success of the program has placed her in a leadership role during her final season. Coach Mackell expects Crump to close her career as one of the most influential figures to grace the MU women’s tennis program.
“While Sam may not see a lot of court time this year, she is an important part of this team,” Mackell added. “Sam helps keep our team loose and our practices light-hearted. Her senior leadership is very important to our team.” Five juniors return for the Knights to add depth to the upper class for the Knights. Junior Tiffany Schendel returns with two years of experience in both singles and doubles competition. She has a 15-12 record in singles play, and has amassed a 24-19 career record in doubles play. Last season, she tied the single-season mark for doubles wins and Coach Mackell sees Schendel as a leader who has the opportunity to make her mark in 2011-12. “Tiffany’s experience is very important to our team,” Mackell said. “She has the opportunity to step up and make an impact this season.” Two juniors, Hillary Carpenter and Hannah Ruegsegger, have seen limited action during their careers, but have been very influential over the younger more inexperienced players. With their commitment to the program each player has the opportunity to be a significant contributor in 2011-12. “I am so glad Hannah and Hillary are part of our team,” said Mackell. “They both are determined to get better every season and their attitudes are the type that you cannot teach.” Juniors Casey DeLucenay and Amy Nocton have also seen limited action, but are expected to contribute significantly in 2011-12. DeLucenay is another player whose off-court attitude has placed her in a position where the coaches are impressed. “Last year, Casey was unable to play due to injury,” she said. “So I am excited to see her back on the court and in action.” Nocton broke into the lineup as a freshman and went 12-11 in doubles competition. She has the tools to be a strong player and has the opportunity to get into the lineup this season. “Amy’s quickness and fearless attitude have always been an advantage for her,” Mackell said. “I am excited to see where she fits in this season.” A trio of sophomores returns for Coach Mackell and they are out to truly make their mark this season. Sophomore Brittney Horlacher not only tied the single-season record for doubles wins, but also went 16-6 in singles play at No. 3. “Last year, Brittney was a huge contributor to our team’s success,” Mackell said. “I know she has been working hard over the summer, so I am excited to see her in action this year.” Sophomore Lauren Paras is another underclassman that had a strong rookie season. Playing at No. 2 singles, Paras went 13-11 with a 6-2 mark in the MCC. She should compete for the top spot in the lineup and give the Knights a chance to win at the top.

2011 season preview Her partnership with sophomore Olivia Pursell brings depth and strength to a strong doubles lineup. She should be able to build on her freshman season and have a breakout year in 2011-12. “Lauren had a great rookie year,” Mackell said. “She is a consistent player that will continue to be an asset to our team.” Pursell is another underclassman who had a strong rookie season with a 15-4 record between No. 4 and No. 5 singles. She went 6-2 in the MCC and, along with Paras, had a strong season in doubles play. She is also poised to have a strong sophomore campaign. “Olivia’s toughness is so important for our team,” said Mackell. “I expect her to step in and help lead our team on the court.” A trio of freshmen have been brought into an already deep lineup as Coach Mackell looks to build the deepest and strongest lineup for 2011-12. Freshman Hannah Knust earned a 25-8 record in her sophomore and junior seasons at Plainfield High School and earned all-state honorable mention accolades in 2010. Coach Mackell expects a significant contribution for the entire freshman class, but particularly from Knust. Freshman Sarah Potter is another strong player being brought into the lineup. Potter was a second team all-state pick in 2010 and earned honorable mention all-state accolades in 2008 and 2009. She was the 2010 sectional singles champion and was the regional runner-up. Mackell is looking forward to a solid rookie season from Potter. Freshman Katie Barrett is another strong player for the Knights, who Coach Mackell expects to contribute significantly. She earned numerous awards at Guerin Catholic and was strong academically. All three freshmen have one thing in common: not only are they strong on the court, but they are also strong in classroom. “This group of freshmen is a solid group both on and off the court,” Mackell said. “We want our ladies to be great students in the classroom and strong competitors on the court. These three ladies will continue to help strengthn our team overall.” This could shape up to be one of the best seasons the Knights have ever had and Coach Mackell is looking forward to leading the Knights to another strong season.
SCHEDULE PREVIEW The 2011-12 season will provide a new challenge for the Knights. Not only do they have to contend with the MCC season and the likes of Indiana Wesleyan University and Taylor University, but Coach Mackell specifically designed this season to be a little bit more difficult. “The schedule this year is a bit more challenging than it has been in prior years,” said Mackell. “However, we believe it gives the ladies more opportunities to see what they can do against strong opponents. We believe that in order to improve, you have to have a strong schedule of opponents that will make it difficult. We will see how we stack up against the challenge.” After opening the season with the alumni match on August 20, the Knights will head to IU-Southeast, which competed in the NAIA Tournament last spring, on August 26 as the regular season opener. MU opens the MCC season with a pair of home matches versus Goshen (08.30) and Bethel (09.03) before the Knights head to Spring Arbor (09.06). The Knights head to Asbury University (09.09) and Georgetown College (09.10) for a non-conference doubleheader before returning home for an MCC matchup with Grace College (09.13). A break in the regular season sees select competitors head to the ITA Midwest Regional Championship (09.15 – 09.17) in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Knights get back into the regular season when they head to Huntington (09.20) and the University of Saint Francis (IN) (09.22) before returning home for what could turn out to be a key pair of matches. Defending MCC champion Indiana Wesleyan comes to Indianapolis (09.24) before last season’s runner-up Taylor University (09.27) to close the regular season. That final weekend could be a decisive weekend in determining seeding for the MCC Tournament, which takes place on October 4 through October 8. It will be the second year where the tournament is a team-based tournament. The spring season sees MU hit the road for their annual Spring Break trip in March before heading to Bellarmine (03.17) and IUPUI (03.30). The first Knight Tennis Classic takes place on March 30 and 31 before a trp to Saint Joseph’s (04.10) closes out the season. A trip to the NAIA National Tournament is what MU is looking to earn in 2011-12 and the culmination of the year is on May 14 through May 19.

2010-11 highlights knights rattle off seven straight to open season
The Knights continued where they left off last season as they opened the 2010-11 season red-hot. They won their first seven matches to open the year 7-0, but, more importantly, opened with five straight victories in the MCC. Freshmen Brittney Horlacher and Kemi Adeyemi opened the year 7-0 in singles competition.
mu drops two straight to top two in mcc
Overcoming the top two programs in the MCC over the past few years has been head coach Cassie Mackell’s top priority. However, in 2010-11 they were unable to surpass Indiana Wesleyan and Taylor. The Knights dropped a heartbreaker to Taylor, 5-4, before dropping a 9-0 contest to IWU.
knights split to close fall regular season at 8-3
With two matches remaining, the Knights just needed to knock off Goshen College to secure third place in the MCC and they did exactly that with a 9-0 sweep. They dropped a tight 5-4 decision to perennial power Olivet Nazarene to close the regular season with an 8-3 overall record and a 6-2 mark in the MCC.
mu wins first two in first mcc team tournament
They gained the third seed for the first MCC team tournament, which was a singles tournament in prior years. The Knights knocked off Huntington, 5-4, to open the tourney before upsetting second-seeded Taylor by a 5-4 score in the semifinals. Horlacher and Adeyemi were the lone undefeated players for MU in singles competition.
knights fall to iwu in mcc tournament title match
After avenging the regular season defeat to Taylor, the Knights ran square into the top-seeded and undefeated Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcats. Once again, MU could not overcome a strong IWU team as they fell in the title match by an 8-1 score. Freshman Kemi Adeyemi was the lone victory at No. 4 singles for the Knights as they close the season with a 10-4 record.
mu closes spring 5-3; finishes 15-7 overall
After a highly successful fall season in which the Knights finished as the MCC team tournament runners-up, they closed their spring season with a 5-3 record including a pair of wins in their last two matches. It was the third straight season in which the Knights finished with 12 or more wins.
reynolds and paras honored by conference
For the first time in their careers, senior Dana Reynolds and freshman Lauren Paras were honored as All-Conference selections. Reynolds finished 7-16 at No. 1 singles in 2010-11, while Paras finished with as 13-11 overall record in her rookie season. The duo is the second and third selections in Coach Mackell’s career.
