at Marian University

The Marian University Physical Education Center is the home of the Marian University Department of Athletics. The “Castle” houses the administrative offices and is the home to the men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and volleyball teams. The P.E. Center also houses the athletic training facilities as well as the John and Mary Beth Adams Fitness Center. The gymnasium at the Physical Education Center has seen Mid-Central College Conference Tournament championship game in 2000-01 when the Knights defeated Huntingotn, 72-71, to earn a berth in the NAIA National Tournament. The men’s team also earned a berth in the 2003-04 NAIA National Tournament when the Knights clinched the MCC regular season title at the Physical Education Center. That year, the Knights advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NAIA National Championship.

The 2005-06 team hosted eventual NAIA National Runner-up Huntington on Homecoming and defeated the Foresters by a 91-76 score when they were ranked number two in the NAIA Division II Coaches’ Poll. The floor at the P.E. Center underwent renovation in 2005-06 with the addition of the athletics logo at midcourt. The university undertook a full-scale renovation to the P.E. Center in 2007 that added a locker room for the football team, a cardiovascular fitness room on the second floor and a brand new foyer area to entertain prospects and provide a space for student-athletes to lounge before they prepare for practice. In 2010, the addition of new state-of-the-art scoreboards and shot clocks has truly added a new dimension to the gym. The expansion of the Physical Education Center is further example that Marian University is On the Move and Making History!

BACON

TODD 4

After seven seasons at the helm of the Marian University women’s basketball program, head coach Todd Bacon shows no signs of slowing down. His versatility has made him a strong asset to the Marian University community, and his commitment to excellence has fueled him during his time as a coach. Bacon came to Marian University in 2000 after a stellar coaching career at Mid-Central College Conference foe Goshen College. During his 10-year stint at Goshen, he served as men’s basketball head coach (two years), head baseball coach (three years) and assisted baseball coach (seven years). In addition, Bacon also served as director of athletics at Goshen College. His tenure at Goshen saw vast improvement in the men’s basketball program. In his first season, the Maple Leafs went 0-27. However, the next season saw the win total climb to 14, and, in just his third season, his players set a new school record for victories with 19. His team combined for 53 wins over the next three seasons including the program’s only two postseason victories. In 1997-98, the Leafs defeated Taylor University, while in 1998-99 the Leafs got the better of Marian University. His players or those he recruited still hold records in 13 of 24 single-season categories. His record of success in basketball carried over to the spring season. His 1998 ballplayers still hold the school record for highest team batting average (.317). Bacon left Goshen and came to Marian University in 2000 as an assistant director of admission. After spending three years in that capacity, he was brought into athletics as the head coach for men’s and women’s tennis and women’s basketball. In his seven seasons as head women’s basketball coach, Bacon has compiled a record of 120-85 (.585). Over the last two seasons, the Knights have been ranked in the top 25 with last season’s No. 14 ranking as the top spot. Bacon guided the team to their highest-ever ranking in 2005-06 when they sat at No. 11 in the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Poll. The 2009-10 season saw unprecedented success during the Bacon era as the Knights earned their first-ever trip to the Mid-Central College Conference Tournament championship game and earned their third straight 19-win season. The 2008-09 season saw MU rattle off 15 straight victories en route to a 19-12 season, while the 2007-08 team finished 19-11. The Knights have compiled a 29-11 home record in the last three seasons and have finished in the top six in each of his seven seasons. The 2008-09 campaign also yielded Bacon’s 100th career win as head women’s basketball coach. His student-athletes have a track record of success of the playing field as well. In seven seasons at the helm, Bacon has had 13 athletes earn Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors. As head men’s tennis coach, Bacon led the Knights to back-to-back MCC championship and three straight NAIA Region VIII Tournament appearances. Under his tutelage, MU went 50-9 over four seasons and 28-4 in the MCC after a 1-9 season in 2003. His efforts were not lost on the women as his teams earned NAIA Region VIII Tournament appearances in four of his five years and two straight appearances after second-place finishes in the MCC. The women were 40-18 in his four years and 22-9 in the MCC. To say success has followed coach Bacon would be an understatement. He was shifted from the head tennis coach to assistant baseball coach with a concentration on working with the pitching staff. Bacon was a two-sport athlete at Earlham College. He was a four-year letter winner in baseball and basketball and was voted the Most Valuable Player in baseball in 1988 and 1990 and in baseball in 1989 and 1990. He was an integral part of the 1989 Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball championship team as well. His basketball career was also highly successful. Bacon held the school record for most three-point field goals in a game as well as the single-season and career records. He graduated in 1990 with a bachelor of science degree in movement studies. He is married with four children. The family resides in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

Meghan McWhirter Assistant Coach

Meghan McWhirter is in her fourth season as an assistant coach for the Marian University women’s basketball program. Formerly Meghan Pilarski, she was a four-year letter winner at Marian University in basketball and track and field and is the current recordholder in the javelin. McWhirter played in 103 games in women’s basketball and notched 48 starts as a post player. She averaged 6.5 points per game, but was known more for her tenacity on the glass. Her ability to rebound the basketball brought her an average of 4.2 boards per game during her career, including 113 rebounds on the offensive end. Coach Bacon describes McWhirter as a player that would “get after it” during every game and was a student-athlete that he hopes his athletes can emulate every time they hit the floor. She earned a bachelor of science degree in biology in 2006 and finished her nursing degree in 2010. She married Josh McWhirter, a former baseball player at Marian University. The couple resides in Avon, Indiana with their son.

2010-11 Marian University Women’s Basketball Roster

Coming off a 19-14 overall finish in the 2009-10 season and an 8-8 Mid-Central College Conference finish, the Marian University women’s basketball team will have a challenging start to the 2010-11 season. MU will start this season off receiving votes in the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll. Head coach Todd Bacon has put together a schedule that will test the Knights right from the start. “It will be interesting to see how the team will hold it together as a group early in the season with so many newcomers on the squad,” stated Bacon. SENIORS The Knights return a single senior and a trio of juniors from last season’s team. Senior Anjellica Rospond leads the Knights after a career year in 2009-10. Coach Bacon is expecting Rospond to contribute heavily this season. JUNIORS The junior class is led by guard Emily Smithson and 2009-10 All-Conference honorable mention junior Rachel Kenney. Kenney earned NAIA National Player of the Week honors last season and helped to lead the Knights to the MCC Tournament championship game. Smithson, who will see more time in an off-guard position this year, was a solid contributor at the point and executed the offense well last season. Coach Bacon is expecting the duo to give solid minutes in 2010-11. SOPHOMORES The sophomore-laden team will be anchored by sophomores Rachel Turk, Whitley Emerson and Amie Larkins. Larkins had a stellar rookie season, and Coach Bacon sees her as a strong contributor this year. Turk was one of the team’s most consistent players in 2009-10 and Bacon sees her as being a very versatile player with the ability to do a lot of different things on the floor to help them win. Emerson is a solid post presence and will be expected to rebound the basketball this season. NEWCOMERS Freshmen Liz Lopshire, Carley Buchanan and Briana Palmer will also provide depth to the Knights. Buchanan has range and is willing to put the ball on the floor and go to the basket. Palmer is a versatile guard who has the ability to drive the basket while also having the ability to step back and shoot the

7

three. Lopshire and redshirt freshman Kalah Baer will provide depth on the block and Bacon hopes they can provide a presence on the glass. After a season in which she redshirted after transferring, sophomore Natasha Marshall will be expected to lead the offense on the floor and provide the vision and leadership that Coach Bacon believes his offense needs. A pair of transfers, junior Misty Wynn and sophomore Adrienne Sahm, will not only provide another option at the guard position, but also give the Knights a scoring punch. Wynn is a strong player who is willing to take the ball to the basket, while Sahm is a sharp-shooter with the ability to knock down the three. 2010-11 SCHEDULE PREVIEW The Knights, who made an exciting run in the 2010 MCC tournament, will start the season off at the Walsh University Classic on Nov. 5 and 6 where they will take on No. 14 Walsh University out of Ohio. Walsh, the American Mideast Conference tournament champions in 2009, defeated the Knights, 77-64, in 2009. MU will also face national runner-up Shawnee State, which finished last season ranked No. 8 in the coaches’ poll and defeated the Knights by a 64-51 score last season. Next on the bill, the Knights will host Aquinas College and Calumet-St. Joseph in the Marian University Classic. Aquinas finished last season with a loss in the Sweet 16 of the National Tournament to eventual runner-up Shawnee State. MU will also face Calumet-St. Joseph, who they met last season at the Crimson Wave Classic. The Knights came out on top in that contest, 60-45. On Nov. 20 and 21, the Knights will travel to the Millikin University Tournament where opponents are still to be determined. Bacon stated that with the tough schedule early in the season we are “trying to get to the point where we can compete in the conference with these opening games, trying to work on our individual game and get better at what we’re doing. We will hopefully take experience from those games and improve weaknesses until we are sound in all phases of the game.” The first conference test for the Knights will be Huntington University, who finished last season as the No. 18-ranked team in the nation and earned a berth in the NAIA tournament. Last season, the Knights dropped both contests with the Foresters, 84-76 and 67-54.

MU’s next conference tests will be Spring Arbor University (Dec. 1) and Grace College (Dec. 4). During the 2009-10 season, the Knights swept the Cougars of Spring Arbor. Their first victory was a thrilling 50-49 overtime victory, and their second was a less exciting and more convincing 79-48 win. The matchups with the Lancers of Grace College were much the same for the Knights. In their first meeting, the Knights pulled off the 70-69 win and dominated in the second game to complete the season sweep with a 71-46 win. The Knights step out of conference play Dec. 10 and 11 to play in the Calumet-St. Joseph Tournament. MU will face Ashford University in the first game of the tournament. Ashford University finished last season with an 8-21 overall record. MU will finish the month of December with four non-conference match-ups. First, the Knights will travel to Midway College in Midway, Ky. The Eagles finished 9-22 and 5-9 in the Kentucky Indiana Athletic Conference last season. MU will then return home to host the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The Knights won both matchups with RHIT last season. Hannibal-LaGrange University and St. Ambrose University will visit the Knights for the Marian University Holiday Classic Dec. 29 and 30. The Trojans of Hannibal-LaGrange finished 8-8 in the American Midwest Conference and 12-19 overall last season. St. Ambrose starts the 2010-11 season ranked No. 25 in the coaches’ poll. The Knights will start the New Year at St. Francis (Ind.). The last time the two teams faced off was in the MCC tournament championship. The Cougars came out on top, 78-62. USF finished last season ranked No. 12 in the coaches’ poll and start this season off as the No. 8-ranked team in the nation. MU hits the road for a pair of games on Jan. 6 and 12 against MCC opponents Taylor University and Bethel College. The Trojans and Knights split last year, with both teams earning the victory on their home court. MU did the same with Bethel in a home and away series. Taylor received votes in the preseason poll, while Bethel earned the No. 18 spot. On Jan. 15, the preseason No. 7 team in the nation comes to the Physical Education Center. Indiana Wesleyan, who lost in the semifinals of the National Tournament last year, swept the Knights, 55-40 and 73-52, last season before the Knights exacted revenge in the MCC Tournament semifinals. Goshen will also head to Indianapolis for an MCC matchup. The Knights swept the Maple Leafs last year, including a 33-point victory in their first contest.

MU will start the second half of the conference season on Jan. 22 at Huntington University and will finish up the regular season at Goshen College, before the MCC tournament that will take place Feb. 22, 25, and 28. The Knights are looking to build on the success of the 200910 season. With a talented crop of newcomers, Coach Bacon and the Knights are excited for the prospects of the 2010-11 campaign.

Fourteen sports are affiliated with the Mid-Central College Conference (MCC), while football is a member of the Mid-States Football Association Mideast League and the women’s golf team is a a member of the Unaffiliated Conference (UAC) within the NAIA. The Marian University cycling team is a 13-time collegiate national championship-winning program with 12 titles coming on the track and one, in 2010, coming on the road. The Marian University bowling team is a member of the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) and will begin competition in October of 2010. Marian University also has a cheerleading team and a dance team. Last season, the Knights finished second in the MCC Commissioner’s Cup for the first time in school history and, this past fall, the Marian University football team, in just its fourth

year of existence, earned a trip to the 2010 NAIA Football Championship Series and won its first-ever playoff game. The Knights finished with an all-time best 10-3 overall record. The department of athletics was born in 1954 and became a member of the MCC in 1988. Since that time, the Knights have won 37 conference championships, have had 25 studentathletes honored as NAIA All-Americans, and have had 162 student-athletes named a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete. The Knights have had more than 200 student-athletes honored as All-MCC first team selections, while the football team, in its three years, has had 29 of its players named MSFA AllMideast League. The Knights have also had numerous studentathletes honored as MCC Players of the Year or NAIA Region VIII Players of the Year. Marian University athletics has a tradition of excellence and we are looking to maintain our success. Marian University is On the Move and Making History.

The facilities

12

Marian University Baseball Field

Home to the eight-time Mid-Central College Conference champion baseball program, the varsity baseball field was built in 1980. The field, formerly Kaufman Field, is a natural grass surface featuring an all-dirt infield and base paths. The fully functional press box features public address functions, a small two-tier suite for entertaining, and a full locker room for the team. A state-of-the-art scoreboard with wireless function was added in 2008. The field also features lights for evening games and wooden bleachers for a traditional ballpark experience.

Marian University Softball Field

Home to the women’s softball program, the varsity softball field was completed in the spring of 2009. The infield is a full-dirt diamond and has a natural grass outfield. It contains a pair of fully enclosed dugouts, a full-size batting cage down the right field line, and bullpens adjacent to each dugout. It also features a state-of-the-art scoreboard with wireless control and a fully functional press box with public address capabilities. The press box rests on a strorage area that will allow storage of equipment for the adjacent tennis center and the softball field.

Marian University Tennis Courts

The home for Marian University men’s and women’s tennis was reconstructed and completed in 2008. The facility features eight outdoor courts with blue and green surfacing. The surfacing is water repellent and provides a stable court for tennis players. The original courts were reconstructed and have created a venue that allows for open viewing of tennis matches and is set against a backdrop of trees. State-of-the-art video operations have given the tennis programs the tools to continue improving to bring MU tennis to the top of the MCC.

Paul J. Norman Cycling Center

The Paul J. Norman Cycling Center is a state-of-the-art cycling training center and is home to the 11-time track cycling national championshipwinning Knights cycling program. The center is home to spin classes, training for the cycling program, and cycling services for the Marian University community. The center has Comp-U-Trainers for individual training, spin bikes for community use, and a Velotron for analysis. The recent addition of PowerBooster classes and indoor time trials has increased exposure for the cycling program and the facility.

St.Vincent Health Field

The home of Marian University football, men’s soccer, and women’s soccer is St.Vincent Health Field. The crown jewel of the Marian University Athletic Complex, St.Vincent Health Field was completed on July 1, 2009. An eightlane latex track, utilized by all sports for conditioning and track practice, encloses the artificial surface that is used by the football and soccer programs. The artificial surface, a synthetic turf manufactured and installed by ProGrass®, is home to the men’s and women’s soccer teams and football team. The facility seats 3,000 people in two stands with concessions, restrooms and team rooms on the main concourse under the main grandstand.

Adams Fitness Center

The John and Mary Beth Adams Fitness Center is the workout facility for student-athletes and the Marian University community. The lower level fitness center is a weight training area for student-athletes and the community that focuses on free-weight training. The upper level fitness center is also utilized by student-athletes and the community and focuses on the cardiovascular training provided by treadmills, step machines, and stationary bicycles. Supervisors are on hand during the school year to assist anyone during normal hours.

Football Locker Room

The Marian University football locker room provides a welcome atmosphere for student-athletes participating in football at Marian University. With more than 100 wooden lockers with space for all equipment, the MU football locker room provides ample space for the football team as well as space for meetings and film review. Each locker is assigned its own chair and the studentathlete is to maintain his assigned locker throughout the season. Built in 2007, the football locker room was one of the first signs of growth at Marian University and, with the continued growth of the program, the Knights have a great place to call home.

Western Bowl

Western Bowl will serve as the official practice facility of Marian University men’s and women’s bowling beginning in the fall of 2010. Western Bowl is a subsidiary of Royal Pin Leisure Centers and is located at 6441 West Washington Street, just 10 minutes from the Marian University campus. WesternBowl is a fully functional non-smoking bowling alley offering 36 Brunswick Pro synthetic lanes and automated scoring for a great bowling experience. Western Bowl will also serve as the host site for the first-ever NAIA Invitational in 2011.

The administration Under the steady guidance and watchful eye of Joe Haklin, the Marian University department of athletics has seen consistent growth and enhancement. Haklin, who is entering his sixth year as director of athletics, has overseen an unprecedented era of growth and improvement in terms of facilities and student-athlete enrollment while also establishing the department as a rich, value-based experience for its student-athletes. As the school’s first full-time director of athletics, Haklin developed a mission statement for the department of athletics and has implemented procedures that allow the department to function smoothly and achieve much success.

Joseph R. Haklin Director of Athletics

Haklin oversees a program that is committed to excellence in all facets of intercollegiate athletics: the classroom, the field of play, and in the game of life. He has been responsible for the establishment of football and men’s and women’s bowling programs at Marian University. He was also the primary facilitator for the expansion of the Physical Education Center as well as the building of St.Vincent Health Field and the renovation of the Marian University Tennis Courts. The unprecedented expansion of athletics at Marian University has seen the growth in the student-athlete population to nearly 450 student-athletes competing across the 21 varsity sports sponsored by Marian University. During his tenure, the top-class cycling team has won six national championships, including the first in the prestigious collegiate road division as well as five on the track. The Knights have improved their overall finish each year during his five years, and the department of athletics finished second in the Mid-Central College Conference Commissioner’s Cup standings in 2009-10, the highest in school history, while the football program has had a pair of winning seasons in three seasons of competition. Marian University has won nine conference championships, had five NAIA All-Americans, numerous Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athletes and All-Conference selections, and 30 NAIA Scholar Teams during Haklin’s tenure. Success has not been an issue during Haklin’s time at Marian University, but the Knights are looking for much more. With the past as evidence, the leadership of Joe Haklin will provide a stable foundation for Marian University athletics well into the future.

The cheerleading team, along with Knightro (our mascot), performs during all football and men’s and women’s basketball games. The dance team is coached by an Indiana Pacers dancer and provides halftime entertainment at all football games and men’s and women’s basketball games. In addition, the dance team has the opportunity to perform at halftime of an Indiana Pacers game during the season.

Attendance at football games is rated as one of the highest in the MSFA Mideast League. Marian University has averaged 1,863 fans per game in 16 home contests between George C. Grosskopf Stadium at Pike High School and St.Vincent Health Field. In the five games played at St.Vincent Health Field, the Knights are averaging 2,454 fans per game and that number continues to rise. Marian University is On the Move and Making History!

The Marian University M-Club generates support for Marian University’s 21 intercollegiate athletic programs by improving Marian University’s athletics facilities, providing athletics enhancements, and generating scholarship support for student-athletes. Annual gifts to the M-Club are powerful resources that enable Marian University to provide over 350 student-athletes with a rewarding and memorable collegiate experience. You can be an integral part of building futures for promising student-athletes at Marian University. To help them prepare for the game and for life after the game, we ask that you please consider joining the M-Club today. Your contribution will help. Several methods and levels of contribution are available to best suit your personal preference: Cash gifts: restricted gifts to sports of choice, restricted gifts to support particular scholarships, or unrestricted gifts to the Department of Athletics Matching gifts: matching gifts from you employer or business--You receive credit for the total contribution. Gifts-in-kind: donation of goods and/or services Deferred gifts: will bequests, charitable gifts annuities, life insurance policies, etc. Other giving options: real estate, stocks, tangible property, etc. Restricting your gift: although Marian University prefers unrestricted gifts to benefit the needs of all studentathletes, we certainly understand an individual’s desire to support a particular sport. You may restrict your gift by denoting your preference(s) on the registration form.

The Marian University M-Club sponsors recognition dinners for the student-athletes at the end of their respective seasons and also sponsors the annual golf outing as well as the M-Club Wall of Fame induction dinner. Through your gifts, Marian University athletics can continue to strive for excellence both in and out of the classroom, and the department of athletics can recognize these student-athletes for their accomplishments each and every year.

Matching Gift Challenge In June 2009, Marian University received a letter from a former trustee informing us of a historic gift. In the letter was a check for $1 million and a pledge for the remaining $5 million—a total gift of $6 million. The amount of this gift is significant—it is the second-largest gift from an individual ever made to Marian University. It is also significant because the donor recognizes our outstanding progress in recent years and wishes to support our continued growth. This gift will be used to match other gifts for improvements on campus, dollar-for-dollar (up to $1 million).

A minimum investment of $5,000 is required to receive the match. This represents an excellent opportunity for investors who are interested in enhancing the academic facilities and other laboratories of learning at a great Catholic university. For more information on how you can take advantage of this matching gift opportunity, contact Sarah Ley ’05, development associate, at sley@marian.edu or 317.955.6212.

“Financial aid was a determining factor in where I could attend college. My scholarships and grants from Marian University gave me the opportunity to attend the college that was in my best interest, where I could receive a quality education and experience in the clinical realm. Marian University has given me the necessary skills and confidence to practice as a registered nurse. I could not ask for more.”

FOuNded:

Marian University grew out of the dedication and vision of Sister Theresa Hackelmeier and the Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, who established a school in Oldenburg, Indiana, in 1851. After a number of transformations the school became Marian College in 1936. The college moved to Indianapolis in 1937. On July 1, 2009, Marian College became Marian University. On January 15, 2010, Marian University announced it will seek accreditation for a new college of osteopathic medicine. AreAs OF sTudy: 36 Majors 37 Minors 27 Concentrations 1 Certificate Program
