physical education center

The home to Knights basketball and volleyball was built in 1982 and features an expansion completed in 2007. The Physical Education Center features the administrative offices of the department of athletics and has a full gymnasium with retractable bleachers on each side for optimal game day viewing. XX rows of bleachers on each side of the playing surface allow for unobstructed viewing of volleyball and basketball. A pair of brand new, state-of-the-art Daktronics scoreboards were installed this summer in an update to the gymnasium. The LED boards are operated wirelessly with a pair of brand new shot clocks repositioned to the top of the backboard for optimal viewing. A three-year old 24-foot scorer’s table with electronic signage provides a special place to view, score and cover a volleyball match or a basketball game. An auxiliary table sits atop the bleachers for visiting radio broadcasts, video coordinators or television broadcasts. A

fully functional public address system features a crow’s nest high above the playing surface for an optimal sound spectrum within the gymnasium. In addition to the playing surface, the 2007 renovation added locker room space for the Knights football program, an athletic training room with four times the space as the original and a large cardiovascular workout room on the upper floor adjacent to two racquetball courts. The cheerleading and dance teams take advantage of the dance and aerobic studio on the upper level, while the Clare Hall gymnasium provides an additional practice facility for the Knights. The foyer features banners highlighting the affiliations of Marian University athletics, the tradition of Marian University, and its Franciscan values, and it houses the trophies earned by the Knights as well as the M-Club Wall of Fame. Marian University is on the move and making history!

coaching staff Dan Findley Head Coach

The findley File

Dan Findley is in his 13th season as the head coach of the Marian University Knights volleyball program. In his 12 seasons at the helm of the volleyball program, Findley has amassed a 202-183 overall record and has had four 20-win seasons. Last season, Findley guided the Knights to a 29-8 overall record and runner-up finish in the Mid-Central College Conference with a 6-2 mark. The 29 wins tied the school record set in 1997 and the 6-2 MCC record was the best since the 2006 season. Last season’s mark was the second consecutive 20-win season for Findley as the Knights went 20-10 in 2008. Findley guided the Knights to the NAIA Region VIII semifinals in 2006 as the team finished 19-13 with a 6-2 mark in the MCC. They fell to Cornerstone University (MI) in their first regional semifinal berth. During his tenure at Marian University, Findley has coached 34 All-Mid-Central College Conference selections and has had three players named NAIA All-Region VIII. Last season, he coached the 2009 MCC Freshman of the Year in Ashley Francis and was named MCC Coach of the Year for the first time in his career. Additionally, Findley coached the 2004 MCC Libero of the Year and 2006 NAIA All-America honorable mention Bethany Dulle in 2006. He has had three players earn Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors during his tenure and his players own all Marian University volleyball records. Prior to being named head coach, Findley served as an assistant coach at Marian University. He resides in Mooresville, Indiana.

Lauren Beck Assistant Coach

Lauren Beck enters her first season as the assistant volleyball coach at Marian University, and she brings a wealth of experience on the court with her. Beck completed a stellar four-year career at the University of Notre Dame where she was named an CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American in 2005. She was a two-time AVCA All-American who served as the team’s cocaptain in 2005. She graduated from Notre Dame with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2006. Upon graduation, Beck spent a year away from volleyball before rejoining the Fighting Irish in 2007 as an assistant volleyball coach. In her one year as assistant coach, Beck coordinated recruiting efforts and assisted in the overall development of student-athletes, while serving as camp director for the Notre Dame Volleyball overnight summer camps. Her focus as assistant coach was on the middle blockers and her group finished in the top 20 in team blocks per game.

2010–11 season preview SEASON PREVIEW The Marian University volleyball team had a 2009 season to remember. The Knights tied the school record for victories, had the Mid-Central College Conference Coach of the Year, had the MCC Newcomer of the Year, and had four players earn All-Conference honors. The Knights finished 29-8 overall and 6-2 in the MCC. They earned the second-best finish in school history, however, the season ended abruptly and head coach Dan Findley has not forgotten. “Last season did not end exactly how we would have liked,” said Findley. “However, we had a phenomenal year and now we just have something we can build on.” Coach Findley has nine student-athletes returning from last year’s squad, and he has added a crop of six freshmen for the 2010 season. The returning crop of players is comprised of three seniors, two juniors, and four sophomores and, alongside the six freshmen, Coach Findley is excited for the 2010 campaign. “We have a solid group of returners,” said Findley concerning the roster. “We are loaded with talent in attack and our defense is solid as well. We are looking to have another great season.” Leading the Knights will be a trio of seniors that includes two All-Conference selections and a load of talent. Senior Sadie Dizney is coming off a strong junior season where she earned All-Conference first team honors and finished second on the team with 367 kills. She was also one of the Knights’ top blockers with 76 total blocks and coach Findley expects her to step into a leadership role. Senior Carrie Sherman, a 2008 All-Conference second team selection, will be expected to lead the Knights in 2010. While only garnering 133 kills, Sherman is one of the most potent hitters and blockers on the team. She tallied 44 blocks with 13 being solo in 2009. Senior Danielle Perry, a 2009 Daktronics NAIA Scholar Athlete, will be expected to step into a leadership role in 2010. While she saw limited action last season, Perry did average just under one kill per set in 2009. In addition, Coach Findley sees Perry as a leader in the classroom as well. “I expect this senior class to really step up and have a great season,” said Findley. “Carrie had an off-year in 2009 and we are looking for her to get back on track. If Sadie can repeat last year and improve where she needs to then we are going to be solid. Danielle is a solid player both on and off the court and I look for good things from her this season.”

Juniors Brittany Miller and Kelsee Evans make up a versatile junior class with the ability to play any position on the court. Miller is an outside hitter who can also step in defensively. She tallied 131 kills last season, but also had a team-high 514 digs. Findley sees Miller as a significant contributor in 2010 and expects big things from her. Evans is another player who saw limited time last season, but has the ability to be a strong presence defensively and at the service line. She had a receiving percentage of 92 percent and tallied 111 digs in 2009. Coach Findley expects her to make a significant contribution in 2010. “Brittany is so versatile that it is an advantage for us,” Findley said. “She can play on the back line in defense and on the front in the attack. I look for great things from her this year. Kelsee is also one of those players we expect to really shine this season. We know she has the talent and are looking for her to utilize that talent.” The sophomore class is anchored by sophomore and 2009 MCC Newcomer of the Year Ashley Francis. Francis, who was also an All-Conference first team selection, led the Knights’ attack and was a presence on defense. She tallied a team-high 390 kills on attack and finished fifth in the NAIA with a .393 attack percentage. She also led the Knights in total blocks with 116 and had 26 solo blocks. She tallied 101 digs and notched 28 service aces in 2009. Coach Findley knows he is going to get a significant contribution from Francis in 2010. Sophomore setter Holly Wasmund also returns to the Knights after a strong rookie campaign. She earned MCC All-Freshman team honors last season after leading the Knights with 941 assists. Wasmund and Francis have spent time together in high school and that should lend a little bit more experience to the attack. “If Ashley and Holly are on the same page, we are in a great position,” said Findley. “Ashley is a strong attacker and can block well, while Holly is a strong setter who also has the ability to block at the net. I look forward to a strong sophomore season out of both of them.” Sophomores Jaymee Schambers and Kristin Miller are welcomed back in the defensive specialist position. Both players can be utilized well in defense and have the ability to guide the attack with their passing skills. “I really am looking forward to seeing what improvements Kristin and Jaymee have made,” said Findley. “Jaymee is strong in defense, but needs to work on her focus, while Kristin just needs to im-

2010–11 season preview prove her serving more than anything. I expect both to contribute significantly this season.” A strong freshman class highlights a great recruiting year for Findley. He brought in six freshmen to add depth and talent at all positions. “I am excited about this freshman class,” he said. “I think we are going to get great things from this group of young ladies.” Freshman Becky Gramer is an outside hitter with a strong ability to hit winners in attack. The Columbus North High School graduate is still learning the MU system, but has the ability to excel in the offense. “Becky’s athleticism sets her apart from many other outside hitters,” said Findley. “She has an outstanding vertical jump and plays great defense. She will be an asset to our program both in and out of the classroom.” Freshman Katie Kaiser is another athlete that Findley is looking forward to seeing in the college game. She was a three-year starter in high school and is a versatile player. “Katie’s communication skills on the court are second to none,” he said. “She is an outstanding defensive player who will contribute immediately.” Freshman Kacie Kelly was a three-year starter in high school as a setter and is a welcomed addition to the program. “Kacie is an excellent blocker as well as an excellent setter,” said Findley. “Her defensive skills are impressive and her dedication to faith, family, and education as well as athletics makes her a great addition to our program.” Freshman Morgan Merrill is a middle hitter/blocker who is versatile at the net. “Morgan is not just an outstanding athlete, she is also a young lady with an amazing heart and incredible love for the sport of volleyball,” said Findley. “She has a high volleyball IQ and understands what it takes to be a champion. I expect big things from Morgan.” Freshman Jacklyn Dizney comes to the Knights from nearby Speedway High School. She brings a great athletic and academic record to Marian University. “She is a highly skilled setter,” said Findley. “She has the necessary tools to be a solid collegiate player.” Freshman Kreigha Henney is a six-foot middle blocker from Columbus East High School. Henney was a three-year letter winner who holds two single season school records at Columbus East. Coach Findley is looking for an immediate contribution from Henney. “Kreigha is an outstanding middle that is a great fit for us,” said Findley. “She is mobile at the net and is a very strong blocker. Her energy and enthusiasm are contagious and we hope it carries over to everyone on the floor.”

SCHEDULE PREVIEW The Knights have another strong schedule that features the Mid-Central College Conference season, which is under a new format. Instead of the one match per opponent, each team will now play a home-and-home for a total of 16 conference matches. Taylor University is the defending champion, and the Knights are hoping to have what it takes to knock off the Trojans. “This new format adds more matches, but I think that might be a good thing,” said Findley. “We have more of a shot than just a one-and-done against the top opponents. We will see how it plays out, but our schedule gets tougher every year.” The Knights take part in the Taylor Trojan Challenge, the Webber International Tournament in Florida, as well as numerous non-conference matches that will provide stiff competition. The Knights have not won a conference title since 1994 and are looking to build on an already successful 2009 campaign.

2009–10 highlights knights open campaign 2-2 at umd Early Bird invite

Head coach Dan Findley entered his 12th season with expectations high as he had four outstanding freshmen and a transfer join the fold. The Knights opened the season with a pair of defeats to Davenport and Saint Xavier, but responded with a pair of wins to close out the UMD Early Bird Invitational with a 2-2 record.

team wins four straight heading into key matchup

The Knights opened 2-3 in 2009, but rattled off four straight victories with a four-set win over Goshen at the Earlham College Tournament. They completed the four-match sweep to the tournament title to move to 6-3 after nine matches. They seized some momentum heading into the MCC opener against Top 25-ranked Taylor University.
