The home to Knights football, soccer, and track and field is St.Vincent Health Field at Marian University. It is a stateof-the-art facility featuring an eight-lane track and a synthetic playing surface for soccer and football. Phase one of construction was completed in 2008 allowing the Knights’ men’s and women’s soccer teams to compete on the ProGrass® surface. The women’s soccer team won its first-ever conference regular season title on the field and successfully defended its title in 2009. The press box is fully functional with booths for home and visiting coaches as well as home radio or television talent. The press box features a split-level work area and has fully functional public address system, hard-wired ethernet connections, several analog phone lines, wireless Internet, live
statistics, and scoreboard functions. The wireless internet access point will also service the spectator stands for an enjoyable experience featuring Wi-Fi. The scoreboard is a state-of-the-art Daktronics® board featuring bright red LED digits so everyone in and around the field knows the score. The board also features a Galaxy® message center for sponsors and advertisements during the season. A four-foot panel showcases the sponsors of Marian University athletics and a new four-foot panel showcases St.Vincent Health as the stadium sponsor. The Knights are 19-2-1 on the pitch at St.Vincent Health Field. They are in search of MCC title number three in 2010.

Head coach Kurt Guldner has been at the helm of the women’s soccer program since its inception in 1998-99 and, in recent years, has guided the team to new heights. Guldner has guided the Knights from the beginning and has seen a steady upswing in the level of success. After winning just one game in the inaugural season, the Knights improved to 12-5 season in 2003 and matched that with a 12-5-1 mark in 2007. It was at that point that the program jumped to heights never before seen. Guldner led the team to what was then the greatest season in Marian University history as the team went 16-1-2 and won the school’s firstever Mid-Central College Conference women’s soccer regular season title with a 7-0-1 mark. The Knights expanded on their success as 2009 became the single-greatest season in school history. They went 17-2-1, earned their second MCC title, defeated Indiana Wesleyan University for the first time in school history, and earned the top seed for the MCC Tournament. Guldner has coached 24 All-Mid Central College Conference selections and several NAIA All-Region VIII selections. Additionally, several players have also received NSCAA All-America honorable mention accolades and Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete honors and, one year after coaching the MCC Offensive Player of the Year, he guided Lauren Gerbick to the MCC Player of the Year award and an NAIA All-America honorable mention accolade. Guldner was named, for the second straight season, the MCC Coach of the Year. It is the second time he has been honored for women’s soccer and the seventh time in his coaching career. He coached the all-time leading scorer in school history, Rana Hoffbauer, who had one of the most dominant seasons on record in 2003 after she tallied a staggering 30 goals. A member of the NSCAA, Guldner is also the head baseball coach at Marian University. He is the all-time winningest coach in Knight baseball history. Guldner earned a bachelor of science degree from Marian University in 1981. He resides in Indianapolis with his wife, Brenda. Elisabeth Crosby ’10 Assistant Coach
Elisabeth Crosby enters her first season as an assistant coach with the Knights program. She spent the last two seasons with the Knights as a student assistant before graduating in May of 2010. Crosby spent the last two years working with two All-Conference goalkeepers in Allison Arth and Jessica Fisher. She was a player for the previous two seasons where she was a goalkeeper and a midfielder. She is currently a member of the NSCAA and is a Grade 7 USSF referee. She resides in Indianapolis.

2010–11 season preview The Marian University women’s soccer team has won the last two Mid-Central College Conference regular season championships, but, the Knights still feel as if they have something to prove. The 2009 season brought historic firsts to the program, but that MCC Tournament title eluded the very young Knights. Last season’s team set the school record for the most wins in a season (17) and earned the 10-year program’s first victory over Indiana Wesleyan University. However, for the second straight year, the Knights suffered their only home loss of the season in the MCC Tournament title match. So feeling like they have something to prove is an understatement. The Knights graduated just two players for the twotime conference champions and return all five AllConference selections, including the MCC Player of the Year, as part of the 17 returners for the 2010 season. Head coach Kurt Guldner has reason to be excited for the upcoming campaign. Leadership should not be a question as the Knights return six seniors for the upcoming season. Senior Mika Jackson has logged the most time for the returning seniors, while Catherine White, Nicole Wallace, and Lauren Steele have each contributed during their careers. The junior class, which contains four of the five All-Conference selections from last season, will be expected to carry a heavy load as nine returners will anchor the Knights in 2010. Last season’s MCC Player of the Year and NAIA AllAmerica honorable mention Lauren Gerbick led the Knights on offense in 2009. Gerbick scored 14 goals including three match-winners to lead the Knights last season. She tallied four assists last season while earning her first All-Conference team selection. She will be expected to give the Knights the same scoring punch up top that they had a year ago. “We expect Lauren to pick up her game even more this year,” said Guldner. “She is coming in this year in better shape and I believe she will show great things this season as well.” Another scoring option from the junior class is the team’s second-leading scorer, Katy Toth. Toth added 12 markers from her forward position along with three assists in 1,355 minutes last season. She tallied five match-winning goals and is expected to contribute heavily this season. A stalwart presence in midfield is something the Knights have had in each of the past two seasons. Junior Lacey Hersman provides that presence as both a defensive player with the ability to strike from dis-
tance for the Knights. Hersman scored six goals and dished out four assists last season from the midfield. Junior Kendra Wilmes has provided a spark of the bench for the Knights in her first two seasons as a wing midfielder. Her speed and presence on the outside of midfield will be something the Knights will look for this season. She handed out three assists in 814 minutes last season, and Coach Guldner has high expectations for Wilmes. Junior Nicole Svorinic is another wing midfielder with the ability to shock defenders with her ability on the ball. Svorinic notched 1,466 minutes last season and tallied a pair of assists on the left side of midfield. Coach Guldner was impressed with her numbers last season and has high expectations for Svorinic this year. Anchoring a defense that was one of the nation’s best, juniors Ally Higgenbottom, Kathleen Spears, and Jessica Fisher look to build on their All-Conference seasons in 2009. Higgenbottom and Spears anchored a defense that allowed just seven goals in more than 1,800 minutes of action and allowed multiple goals in a match on just two occasions. Higgenbottom logged a team-high 1,689 minutes, while Spears saw 1,427 minutes of play last season. Fisher was the wall the Knights needed between the pipes as she picked up where 2008 graduate Allison Arth left off. Fisher set school records for goalsagainst-average (0.36), goals allowed (6), wins (14), and shutouts (12). She was also part of a team that set the school record with 15 total shutouts in 20 matches last season. “Jessica set records last season and we expect her to step up even more this season,” said Guldner. “She is a veteran goalkeeper and we are looking for her to really step up this season.” Coach Guldner expects a lot out of the sophomore class after a rookie season that saw a championship come back to the Knights. A trio of sophomores return for the Knights with team Most Valuable Player and AllConference pick Nikki Schmidt anchoring the class. Schmidt was a presence on the attack in the midfield as the distributor of the ball and the leader on the attack. She would lead the Knights forward on offense and would put the ball in the right place for the Knights. She tallied nine goals and three assists last season in the third-highest number of minutes. She logged 1,447 minutes in midfield and notched a team-high six match-winning goals. Coach Guldner has high expectations for Schmidt as she will be expected to lead the Knights in 2010.

2010–11 season preview “Nikki is the center of our midfield,” said Guldner. “She is going to be our anchor in the middle of the field for us.” Sophomore Samantha Cook is another secondyear player that the coaching staff has remained excited about after her rookie campaign. She was another player in the center of midfield that held strong for the Knights in defense while providing a scoring punch on the attack. She led the team with seven assists and scored five goals in her first year. The coaching staff is expecting a significant contribution from Cook this year. “I expect big things from Sam this season,” said Guldner. “She is a strong player in the midfield and we are just expecting big things from her.” The second in between the pipes is sophomore Julia Naab. Naab had a stellar rookie campaign playing behind Fisher much in the same way Fisher spent her first season behind Arth. However, when Naab did earn the start she flourished. In 315 minutes, Naab allowed just one goal and had a 0.29 goals-against-average. She earned three shutouts in her first season and Coach Guldner has high expectations for Naab as a sophomore. A pair of freshmen arrive at Marian University intent on continuing the success of the past two seasons. Freshmen Casey Stouder and Sarah Patterson are welcomed additions to the two-time conference champions. Stouder brings a presence in the back line to add to Higgenbottom, White, and Spears. Coach Guldner is excited about Stouder’s ability to defend well for the Knights. “Casey (Stouder) is a solid defender,” said Guldner. “She will probably see a lot of time on the field for us. She has a lot of skills, speed, and knowledge of the game. She is just a great all-around player that we have been looking for.” Patterson is a goalkeeper that will bring depth in between the pipes for the Knights. Coach Guldner is excited for the opportunity she will have to gain valuable experience behind one of the conference’s top goalkeepers. “Sarah has a lot of length in between the pipes and has good hands,” Guldner said. “She is going to learn a little more about the game this year with our other goalkeepers.” Freshman Lauren Poteet is a late arrival from Ben Davis High School and Coach Guldner is excited about Poteet. “She will play up top a little for us during the year,” said Guldner. “She can finish and we just believe she can make a solid contribution this season.”
SCHEDULE PREVIEW The Knights’ schedule is a bit more difficult in 2010 than it has been in previous years. After opening with a scrimmage against NCAA Division II University of Indianapolis, the Knights take on Cardinal Stritch University for the first time in school history. They take on the University of St. Francis (IL) in the end match of the MU Labor Day Classic before heading to Hanover. Georgetown is at St.Vincent Health Field before MU travels to Indiana Tech and hosts NCAA Division III Rose Hulman. It is at this point that the schedule takes turns dramatic. A quartet of matches are the make-or-break point of the season for MU. A trip to perennial contender Saint Xavier University is followed by a trip to up-andcoming Grace College to open defense of the MCC title. Perennial power Spring Arbor University comes to St.Vincent Health Field before the Knights head to arch-rival Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana. The Knights defeated IWU for the first time in school history in 2009 at Wildcat Field. They are looking to repeat that result in 2010. “We always expect to compete against strong opponents,” said Guldner. “There are no weak teams in our conference and we are excited for this season.” Four of the final six matches are at home and the Knights have not fallen to any of the final six opponents in the last two seasons. They are looking to conclude the season on a high note as they prepare for the 2010 MCC Tournament.

2009–10 highlights Knights Open Defense of First MCC Title
The defending Mid-Central College Conference champion Knights opened the 2009 campaign with a 0-0 draw to perennial national contender Houghton College and a 1-0 win over host Cedarville University at the Cedarville Classic. The draw was forced to end at 90 minutes due to lightning.

The Knights and 2008 MCC Coach of the Year Kurt Guldner used their match against the University of Saint Francis (IL) to collect much-needed items for Holy Family Shelter in Indianapolis, which provides emergency shelter for homeless families by providing residential services designed to move homeless families to self sufficiency.

Four Knights were honored in three weeks by the MCC as MU opened with a 9-0-1 record through the first 10 matches. Sophomores Lauren Gerbick (09.14) and Katy Toth (09.22) along with freshman Samantha Cook (10.05) were each named Offensive Player of the Week, while sophomore Jessica Fisher (10.05) earned defensive honors.
Knights Stun Wildcats on Road
Fueled by an early second half goal from sophomore Lauren Gerbick, the Knights made history with their first-ever victory over nationally-ranked Indiana Wesleyan, 1-0, on Oct. 13. Gerbick scored less than three minutes into the second frame to send the Knights to their first-ever win over IWU and put MU in the driver’s seat for back-to-back MCC titles.

Sophomores Lauren Gerbick and Jessica Fisher were each honored by the MCC after a 2-0 week and a 1-0 win over IWU. Gerbick hit the match-winner, while Fisher shut out the ninthranked Wildcats. The honors were the fifth and sixth of the campaign for the Knights as they sat in the driver’s seat for their second straight MCC title.
Knights Break Into Top 25 at Highest-Ever Position
After spending the first seven weeks on the outside looking in, the defending MCC champs finally broke into the NAIA Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. It took 13 straight victories before the Knights broke into the ranking, but they leaped into the poll as the No. 16-ranked team in the nation.

The 2008 MCC champions tied Houghton to open the season, but rattled off 15 straight victories to move to 15-0-1 on the season and 7-0 in MCC play. The Knights used a 3-0 victory over a tough Grace College team to seal their second consecutive MCC championship. A good way to send off the seniors with a 3-0 win and their second MCC title.
Gerbick is Player of the Year; Five Named All-MCC
For the second straight year the ultimate prize eluded the Knights, but a pair of MCC titles is not a bad consolation. Sophomore Lauren Gerbick was named Player of the Year, five players were named All-Conference, Coach Guldner was named MCC Coach of the Year for the second straight season and Gerbick was named an NAIA All-America honorable mention. It was the culmination for another spectacular year of Marian University women’s soccer.
