coaching staff David Roberts Head Coach
The ROBERTS File
David Roberts enters his 26th season as the head coach of the men’s and women’s cross country programs. The 2009 season was special for Roberts as he guided the men’s team to its first-ever Mid-Central College Conference championship and senior Kyle Murray won the MCC individual championship to become the sixth individual runner to earn the conference title. He was also named the MCC Coach of the Year for the third time in his career and had the fifth student-athlete in his career earn NAIA All-America honors. During his tenure at Marian University, Roberts has led 26 Knights to individual national qualification and also led the women’s program to the 1994 MCC championship. He has also coached 24 Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athletes, and he has had the women’s team named NAIA Scholar Team four times while the men earned the honor on three occasions. A member of the 2006 and 2007 USATF outdoor championships organizing committee, Roberts was instrumental in the production of events in the city of Indianapolis on both the local and national levels. He also served as a coach at the 1996 Indianapolis Peace Games. He resides in Indianapolis with his wife and they have four children.
Two MCC Championships Three-time MCC Coach of the Year Numerous national qualifiers

Shawn Murray is entering his second season as assistant coach for the Marian University cross country program. Murray, a three-year letter winner at Marian University, graduated with a bachelor of science degree in sport management in 2009. He lettered as a competitor from 2006 through 2008 and was a 2009 NAIA national qualifier in the marathon where he finished 28th. Currently, Murray holds the school record in the marathon with a time of 2:53:27. He resides in Indianapolis.

2010 men’s season preview MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEW After a phenomenal year in 2009, the men’s cross country team is looking to repeat the same success. The Knights earned their first Mid-Central College Conference Championship and qualified as a team for the NAIA National Championships. “This is a rebuilding year for us,” said head coach Dave Roberts, the 2009 MCC Coach of the Year, of the upcoming season. “We lost All-American Kyle Murray to graduation as well as Thomas Jeschke, who was an All-MCC athlete as well. So, it is going to be difficult to fill the shoes of those student-athletes.” Murray earned the individual MCC title and finished 26th at Nationals, and Coach Roberts believes he will be sorely missed. The loss of Murray and Thomas Jeschke, both All-MCC performers, also hurts the depth of the program. But, Coach Roberts is excited about the prospect of rebuilding in 2010 with a trio of seniors, a junior, two sophomores, and five freshmen coming to run for the Knights. Leading the crop of returners are fifth-year senior Michael Foerster, senior Ryan Wieser and junior Derek Harris. Foerster and Harris each finished in the top 150 in the nation in 2009 and earned All-Conference honors last season. “Michael and Derek each placed in the top 200 in the country last season, so we do have some experience,” said Roberts. “ We do have Michael returning, who placed 100th at the NAIA meet, and Derek Harris, who placed 190th at the NAIA meet. Those two guys as well as Ryan Weiser will be the ones we are counting on to rebuild.” Junior Nick Sefton was an All-MCC performer in 2009 and he was a last-minute returner to the program after having left the program during the summer. Sefton will help to lead and provide stability this season for the Knights. “Nick is a great runner and proved that last season,” said Roberts. “We expect big things from him this season.” Coach Roberts also has senior James Wangari and sophomore Emile Conde in the mix to provide a little more depth for the Knights. Three incoming freshmen will make the team very young, but Coach Roberts sees this as an opportunity for those young athletes to compete well. Freshmen Chris Hanson, Chris O’Connor, and James Simms will be young and inexperienced, but Roberts believes they will adapt quickly. “We have three outstanding runners coming in,” said Roberts. “James Simms, who placed 24th in the Kentucky State meet, and Chris Hanson, who finished fourth in the Indiana regionals are a pair of great performers. We feel as though those two young men as well as Chris O’Conner will be counted on heavily this year.” The Knights have proven to be a dominant force against other NAIA opponents, but will have to rebuild in order to repeat some of the same success against higher level opponents in 2010. A tough schedule lies ahead, but Roberts is takes it in stride. “I will be happy if we finish in the top of the conference,” he said of their chances this season. “But, realistically, we lost several really strong athletes. So it will be tough.” click to hear coach roberts discuss the 2010 season

2010 women’s season preview WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEW The women’s cross country team will be looking to improve on a seventh-place finish at the Mid-Central College Conference Championships in 2009. With six members returning for the 2009 campaign and only two graduating, the Knights return as an experienced, but young, team. “We always like to think we have a shot to finish in the top half of the conference,” said head coach Dave Roberts. “However, we are relatively young so we have a lot of work to do.” Even though the Knights lost Emily Miller and Marissa Gill in the off-season, senior Adrienne Shepherd, the team’s Most Valuable Runner in 2009, is returning for her final season of competition after a 22nd-place finish at the 2009 MCC Championships. Coach Roberts is expecting a lot out of Shepherd and sees bigs things for her this season. “The loss of Emily Miller and Marissa Gill hurt pretty badly,” said Roberts. “However, Adrienne (Shepherd) finished 22nd at the conference meet last year, so we know that she will make a significant contribution this season.” Junior Laura Neuman and sophomore Jacquelyn Dossey are expected to provide a significant contribution this season. But, Roberts is more excited about his recruiting class and the potential that exists within the corps of five runners. Sophomore Brittany Gillespie was a pleasant surprise last season, and Coach Roberts is looking forward to seeing what she can do if she stays healthy this season. Sophomore transfer Kassandra Gearlds was one of the top runners at Franklin Central High School two years ago. After spending one season at Florida Southern College, she transferred back to Marian for the 2010 season. “Kassandra Gearlds was a runner we recruited a couple of years ago,” said Roberts. “She competed well at Florida Southern and I look forward to her making a solid contibution this season.” Freshmen Lauren Borchelt and Staci Roberts were both strong runners at their respective high schools. Borchel finished 14th for Concordia Lutheran at last year’s sectionals, while Roberts finished 39th for Bishop Dwenger at sectionals. Coach Roberts is excited about the talent these ladies bring to the program. Samantha Walsh is another newcomer that Coach Roberts expects big things from in 2010. “We think we have got some young people that can help us out this year on the women’s side,” said Roberts. “We are optimistic that we are going to improve this season, but we do have a lot of work to do.” The Knights have another season full of tough competition, but Coach Roberts believes they will improve significantly this season and look to get back toward the top of the conference.
