Program Notes
West Winds (2020) Brian Blume b. 1985
In many European traditions, winds blowing from the west are associated with the bringing of Spring and Summer - mild and gentle winds ushering in welcome changes. This piece, composed in late spring/early summer, reflects some positive changes in my own life as I moved to a new state and transitioned to a new job. It is my hope that when the West Winds blow in your life, you (the performers and audiences) will allow these winds of hopeful change to move you to new and better places.
(program notes by the composer )
Avalanche Lake (2018) Patrick Speranza b. 1991
Avalanche Lake was inspired by a trip to Glacier National Park in Montana. The lake sits at the base of Bearhat Mountain and Little Matterhorn and is accessible by a five-mile hike through forested mountains. The gorgeous view is enhanced by several long waterfalls that can be seen plunging down the side of the mountains. The piece begins in a way that reflects on the quiet beauty of this scene before becoming more energetic and ultimately reflecting exuberance and joy.

Showdown at High Noon (2014)
Jack Wilds b. 1986
This colorful work is a tribute to the iconic western soundtracks of the 1960's, and uses the stomping feet of all players along with a whip to give this cowboy romp an old-west feel. In this deftly written work, the melodic fun is spread around to all sections of the band. A single chime note rings out high noon at the end, a fitting way to conclude this nostalgic musical visit to the old west.

The Oregon Trail (1999)
Michael Story
1956
The Oregon Trail was the major route followed by American pioneers as they moved westward during the 1840s. Some 12,00 brave men, women, and children set out on the six-month long, 2,000 mile journey that began near Independence, Missouri and ended at the Columbia River region of Oregon.
Traveling on the Oregon Trail was a severe test of strength and endurance. Pioneers had to face flooded rivers, rugged mountain terrain, cholera and other serious diseases, Native American attacks, and a shortage of food and safe water. The sight of dead horses, oxen, and numerous shallow graves of earlier pioneers was a constant reminder of the hardships yet to be faced.
Nevertheless, thousands made the courageous journey successfully and lived a prosperous life in the great Northwest.

When Johnny Comes Marching Home (1863/2018)
Patrick Gilmore (1829-1892) arr. Andrew Balent
The story of When Johnny Comes Marching Home is also the story of Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore. Gilmore, an 1848 Irish immigrant to Boston, was considered by no less a musician than John Philip Sousa as the "Father of the American Band.”
Gilmore led a number of bands in the Boston area, including Patrick Gilmore's Band. At the beginning of the Civil War, in September 1861, the band enlisted as a group in the Union Army and was attached to the 24th Massachusetts Infantry. Gilmore's band served both as musicians and stretcher bearers at such horrific battles as Bull Run, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and Richmond. Gilmore was posted to occupied New Orleans, Louisiana in 1863 and, as Grand Master of the Union Army, ordered to reorganize the state military bands. It was at this time that he claimed to have composed the words and music to When Johnny Comes Marching Home.

The Last Ride of the Pony Express (2004) David Shaffer b. 1953
A March 1860 ad in a California newspaper read: “Wanted. Young skinny, wiry fellows. Not over 18. Must be expert riders. Willing to risk death daily. Orphans preferred.”
On April 3 1861, the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company began a bold new enterprise to provide the fastest mail delivery between the mid-east and California, by horse-back in hopes of gaining a million dollar governmental mail contract. Nicknamed the ‘Pony Express’, this new service ran day and night from April 1860 to October 1861.
Once a week from April to mid-June 1860 and twice a week from mid-June to late October 1861, 183 men were known to have ridden this dangerous and challenging route for the Pony Express. At a pay of $100 a month, these men rode 75 to 100 mile per day, changing horses every 10 to 15 miles. 400 horses were purchased to stock the Pony Express and a system of 165 stations was built along the 2,000 mile trail. The mail route took 10 days in summer and 12-16 days in winter. The record for run of the route was 7 days and 17 hours for the delivery of Lincoln’s Inaugural Address in late 1860.
With the completion of the cross country telegraph system in 1861, the Pony Express became too costly to carry communication and too dangerous to attract riders. The cost of transporting the mail in 1860 was $5.00 per 1/2 ounce (approx. $100 per 1/2 ounce in today’s costs) and on October 24, 1861, The Last Ride of the Pony Express was completed. $200,000 in debt, the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company declared bankruptcy and shut down the operation.
Although the company’s final demise was the failed to attract the million dollar governmental contract, it succeeded in improving communication between the east and west. It also proved the central route could be traveled throughout winter and supported the construction for the central route of the transcontinental railroad.

Field of Flags
What is the "Field of Flags” fundraising event?
On Memorial Day, Flag Day, the 4th of July, and Labor Day, the Mukwonago Band students and staff will display large quantities of American flags along East Veterans Way near the Mukwonago Area School District Office/Park View Middle School.
For just $50, you can sponsor a flag that will be flown on each of the four American summer holidays. Each of the flags is 3ft by 5ft' and flown on a 7 1/2 ft white pole that is internally anchored into the ground with rebar. Attached to each pole is a tag that includes the flag's number, the name of the supporter who sponsored it, and a custom dedication to a serviceperson or other hero who has served our country. Each supporter also receives a yard sign that they can proudly display in front of their home or business.
To sponsor a flag, view the current list of supporters, or find more info, please visit our website or scan the QR code below.
