Santa's Strut (2021)
Picture Jolly Old St. Nicholas stepping out to a funky, bluesy beat, and you’ve got Santa’s Strut. Not to be outdone, Santa’s elves chip in with a toy-building rhythmic breakdown that’s a hoot for players and audiences alike. Listen to each other, lock in, and get your holiday groove on with Santa’s Strut!

Toboggan (2015)
Toboggan depicts a short, fast ride on a small sled. The piece starts by capturing the excitement of finding new-fallen snow. The descent swishes and jingles at high speed through sudden direction changes, patches of rough snow, and the gentle rising and falling of fresh powder. Toboggan ends, as sled rides often do, with playful crash into a snowdrift.

Jingle Bells (1857/2022)
Jingle Bells is one of the best-known and commonly sung American wintertime songs in the world. It was written by James Lord Pierpont and published under the title "One Horse Open Sleigh" in the autumn of 1857. Even though it is now associated with the Christmas and holiday season, it was actually originally written for American Thanksgiving. It has been claimed that it was originally written to be sung by a Sunday school choir; however, historians dispute this, stating that it was much too "racy" to be sung by a children's church choir in the days it was written. A Rather Bumpy Sleigh Ride is a fun piece for any young band to perform for their first concert. Using only six pitches and basic musical concepts such as staccato style and 8th note rhythms, the piece will help build confidence in beginners as well as provide fun music of substance to perform.
The piece contains little snippets of several holiday tunes such as Jingle Bells, Up On The Housetop, and Jolly Old Saint Nicholas. After a short introduction, the sleigh ride itself gets going in measure 4 with the faster tempo. All staccato notes should be played light and short to keep from dragging the tempo or muddying the texture. Be very careful not to play into the rests scattered throughout the piece as it will mar the effect of the sled running over the “bumps” in the music.
This composition is dedicated to the Porter Ridge Middle School Band program where my daughter Lauren began her musical journey as a trombonist.

Traditional arr. Victor López b. 1950
Christmas is celebrated in different countries and cultures all around the world. In Zimbabwe, one may find many homes with elaborate Christmas decorations, including a traditional European Christmas tree. However, only the main room is decorated. Christmas carols are sung throughout the holiday season at different events but mainly at church services. Moreover, Christmas occurs in December during the summer months in Zimbabwe. Many of the Christmas cards include pictures of Africa and wild animals. However, in order to keep up with the Christmas spirit, many cards include the traditional snow scenes and other Christmas stories. At dinner parties, chicken with rice is often the main dish served at Christmas because chicken in Zimbabwe is very expensive and considered a treat.
The arranger, Victor López, traveled to Zimbabwe with his family and, upon his return, was inspired to write this arrangement that captures the Spirit of Christmas and the rhythms of Zimbabwe’s rich culture. Based on “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” this piece is appropriately titled Merry Kisimusi, which means “Merry Christmas” in Zimbabwe.

Dance Celebration was inspired by my attendance at my daughters' very first dance recital during the spring of 1999. My youngest (Madison) performed in a beginning ballet movement ensemble that served as the creative seed for the introduction of this work. My oldest (Savannah) danced in a more contemporary style that led to the celebratory (and energetic!) body of the piece.

Santa the Barbarian and the Pirates of the North Pole is a feisty and festive holiday work that finds our iconic antihero taking to the seas to spread his brand of holiday mayhem. Written in a jaunty 3/4 time, Chapter 2 of the Santa the Barbarian saga evokes both yuletide cheer and danger on the high seas as our jolly old elf and his pirates pillage, plunder, and bring the spirit of the season to anyone unlucky enough to cross their paths. Incorporating familiar tunes in the style of sea shanties (Jolly Old St. Nicholas; I Saw Three Ships; Ukrainian Bell Carol and more), this work for narrator and concert band is sure to be the talk of your next winter concert! Rated Arrrrrgh!
(program notes from J.W. Pepper & Son, Inc.)
This delightful holiday treat captures the joyous mood of the happiest of childhood feelings---a snow day! Opening with just a hint of the icy wonderland outside, the piece quickly moves into a gleeful celebration capturing the playfulness of this treasured winter event. The perfect addition to any winter concert, this piece is sure to be a perennial holiday favorite.

Randall D. Standridge b. 1976 Alan SteinAfter a long day’s journey, the nomads set up camp for the evening. As the sun casts its final searing rays on the desert landscape, a campfire roars to life and the celebration begins. As the sky darkens, the festivities grow wilder and wilder until eventually, three groups of revelers take turns dancing at the edge of the fire, each trying to outdo the other. Finally, the entire tribe joins, dancing wildly for hours until the campfire dims and morning grows near.

Auditions for the MHS Band Program are just around the corner! Parents, please encourage your students to audition.
No, but we strongly encourage all students to take an audition. This allows instructors to see your student’s musical skills and ensure that they are placed in an ensemble that will help them best develop and grow as a musician. If a student does not audition they are placed in Concert Winds or Concert Percussion.
All students should take an audition regardless of their ability level. This helps us get to know your student musician and ensures that they are in an ensemble that best fits their musical skills and goals.
A detailed informational handout including a link to our online audition sign up will be emailed out to families after this concert. Audition excerpts along with hard copies of the informational handout are available in the PVMS and MHS Band Rooms.
Auditions will take place on January 20th & 23rd - see the informational handout and link to the online sign up for more information.
• Concert Winds/Concert Percussion - open ensemble. No audition required. Compare workload/rigor to normal academic classes/JV2 athletic teams.
• Symphonic Band - mid-level ensemble. Audition required. Compare workload/rigor to honors level academic classes/JV1 athletic teams.
• Wind Ensemble - top-level ensemble. Audition required. Compare workload/rigor to AP Classes/Varsity level athletic teams.
We support the arts in the Mukwonago Area School District through volunteerism, fundraising, and advocacy.
Membership Dues support around 25% of the MFAB budget. There are options available for every family ($30, $60, or $90) and a business membership option ($250) for our community partners. Note that some funding for each individual art is based on the percentage of families it has registered for MFAB.
