The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. mourns the death of its former Assistant Executive Director of Marketing and Public Relations and former Editor-of-the-Sphinx, Brother Henry A. Stewart. Brother Stewart, a Spring 1999 Alpha Rho Chapter initiate, a Life Member of the Fraternity, and a member of Omicron Lambda Alpha (OLA) Chapter, transitioned to Omega Chapter on Sunday, March 14, 2021.

Brother Stewart, who served in his role at the General Office from June 2017 to November 2019, was an award-winning senior communications executive, last serving as Director of Integrated Communications Strategy for AARP, where he was responsible for leading the development of a strategic approach to health communications, overseeing the execution of the strategy, and measuring results. His role focused on AARP’s work and resources on health issues, such as Medicare, Medicaid, brain health, wellness, and prevention.

“Brother Henry Stewart was an outstanding Brother and an exemplary member of our dear fraternity,” said Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. General President Dr. Willis L. Lonzer, III. “His drive for excellence was clear through his personal and professional accomplishments and his fraternal spirit was palpable as reflected by the lives that he positively touched. We will miss our dear Brother.”

Prior to his leadership roles at the General Office, Brother Stewart was the founder and Principal Strategist of the Emerson Street Strategy Group, Senior Vice President of Weber Shandwick, Deputy Executive Director at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Campaign for High School Equity, and Senior Liaison for External and Community Affairs at the National Education Association (NEA) among others.

Brother Stewart earned his bachelor’s degree in Economics and Political Science from Morehouse College and was also a former minister at Emory United Methodist Church in Washington, D.C.

Within his OLA alumni chapter, he formerly served as vice-president and president of the chapter.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Stewart family, Morehouse and Spelman College alumni, Alpha College and Alumni Chapter Brothers, as well as all others who knew and loved him.

Farewell, dear Brother. Transcendent art thou.
