A Message from Mr Macoun, Head of School The spirit and enthusiasm of our students and staff are hard to capture in print but for me this energy and optimism dominates my memory of this past year. Perhaps there is nowhere that this is best seen than at the weekly morning Assemblies, embracing student presentations and creativity, reflecting so much of what is good and meaningful to our community. Our students' lives are very full and yet they always seem to want more. There is no question, at M ulgrave everyone's expectations are very high and the results impressive. We are a young and growing community where the pioneering spirit still burns brightly yet traditions are being established and quality is becom ing assured. This has been my first year at Mulgrave and I have been m ost impressed and excited by what is being achieved and encouraged by the extraordinary potential of the school and its students. Our Yearbook provides us with the opportunity to celebrate the successes of the past year and to record significant events and visual memories of our time together. Each and every one of us will have different memories of the year gone by but this book provides us with a common source and record for now and for the future. Enjoy these memories! Collecting, collating and creating a yearbook is no easy task and I want to congratulate the Year Book team for their determined and selfless efforts on our behalf. As a former year book editor myself, I know that only the editorial team know w hat they had to go through to get to the finished product and for sure it has not been an easy journey. So a special "Thank You" to Nicola Ferguson, Richard Hoole and Ruben Zamar for all their efforts. The enjoyment we will all have in cherishing these memories in the years to come through this record will be your reward.
A Message from Mr de Beer, Principal of the Upper School Our mission is to inspire excellence in education and life, and in the Upper School it is our goal to continue to improve the academic standard, to challenge mediocrity, but most importantly, to provide our students with "skills for life" and "education for life". The Upper School consists of the Middle School (grades 7 - 9 ) and the Senior School (grades 10-12). Both schools have very distinctive philosophies and programmes. The Middle School offers our students the opportunity to develop the skills they require for independent and lifelong learning. Although we provide pastoral care and a safe learning environment, Middle School students are encouraged to inquire and challenge. The unique curriculum includes Philosophy, Media Studies, Latin, F. A.S.T. (Foundational Academic Skills Trai ning), Renaissance Activities and a Mentoring program me that was commended by the Ministry of Education. The Senior School offers much more than a university preparatory programme. While we continue towards the IB Diploma Programme, our current curriculum includes a vast array of regular and AP courses in the Arts, Sciences and the Humanities. The academic syllabus is augmented by our wireless laptop programme, excellent University and Career Guidance, and individual care second to none.
Amidst the stringent academic demands of this past year, the Upper School has offered our students a healthy balance with many options in the other strands; Athletics (18 competitive and 8 recreational teams), the Arts (15 groups and clubs) and Service (11 in-school service options). If you add to this a number of academic competitions (Math and Latin), compulsory Outdoor Education and Service, a leadership programme from grade 7 up, international trips, the famous Zoom Film Festival, Arts Week, Spirit Week and Service Week, you have a very rich, invigorating and rewarding learning environment! The Upper School is a caring community where the expectations are clearly defined. I find it very exciting, almost magical, to be a part of the innovative and dynamic Mulgrave community; a community which provides the skills to be truly excellent in life.
A Message from Mr Cusbert, Principal of the Junior School M ulgrave's Junior School continues to be a beacon on the North Shore, known far and wide as a place where children are inspired to give of their best by caring and passionate teachers and committed, involved parents. While an enriched academic programme continues to ensure that our students are among the best prepared in the province, there are many things near impossible to measure, that really stand us apart. We are about community and determining what is best for our children; our aim is to develop and maintain a village of attachments, which will ensure that we have the relationships necessary to develop the 'whole child'. This academic year, the faculty have spent considerable time exploring the value of the P rim ary Years Program m e of the International Baccalaureate Organisation. We have
found the philosophy of the PYP to be a very close match to our own and so the teachers have wholeheartedly supported our movement towards authorization as a PYP school, in spite of the realization that it means a lot of work. The pay off for all of that work will be, we believe, an even better school than we already have and a programme that ultimately reaches children no matter what their intrinsic ability or learning style, that alone is enough to inspire. Over the year, we have experimented with new ways of doing things. In fact, many of the new things we tried actually came from parent suggestions and feedback. We moved our first set of parent/teacher conferences to the early Fall so that parents and teachers could set goals for the year and we changed our final set of conferences for the K-5's to be student-led, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. We made changes to our "W alk Through the Day" which were likewise appreciated. We changed our report cards so that they gave more specific information and we moved towards a more child-centred Celebration of Science. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our parent community for their willingness to trust us as we try new things, and for their enthusiasm when providing us with constructive feedback. Many things, however, have remained unchanged and have continued to provide those special moments that mean so much to us all as educators. W atching those little faces light up the stage at assemblies and special performances will always be a draw. Watching risk-taking and independence develop through our outdoor education programme is a highlight for many. A good school is all about balance; academics are important, but so is a strong music and arts programme, opportunities for physical development, an appreciation of our responsibility towards making the world a better place, and the time for free play as a venue for social and character development. Developing traditions is important, especially for such a young school, but we all, parents and teachers, realize that innovation and an open mind are just as essential if we are to give our children the tools they will need for a happy, productive future.

Well, first things first, 1 have to say thank yon to all my felloiv chess club members. Putting all my time towards winning chess championships was well worth it. Okay sorry, I'm just kidding. Now, it is time for the real thing. The years that I have been at Midgrave (grade 11 and 12), have been such good experienc It was a great end to my high school career. There were many good friendships made. Monika, you chang my life (apples). There are so many individual things to be said to people, but there is not enough room write it all. Big White ski trip was amazing. Zoomfest was delightful. Last year acting ivas memorable, with all those younger people. Classes this year were memorable with certain random conversations. I have confidence of success in all o f my fellow classmates. I wish you all good luck in your futures, and seriously thank you for making Mulgrave a good experience. The answer to if I'll give you the lighter is...Sure Thang!
Alicia Cherneski I came to Midgrave at the end o f grade eight. The school was still being built, so my first few months were spent in the portable. Since the portable days, so much has changed. Teachers and students have come and gone, but in the end, we have an awesome graduating class! Thanks everyone. Memories: go karts, water fights, Stein Valley - Katers/ Roxy, Bamfield, SAC, lounge, FB, grad trip, Cindy’s,floor hockey, Flying U, swimming, driving, Student council, semi-formals, circle o f trust.

Begin! Grade six: acoustic teachers and stickers and unlikely science. Winter club, broken exit lights, new waves o f people, new building;friends and "assertive!" film clips (no sympathy, no sleep), a handful o f change, I looked elsewhere: (2 years gone: old friends, quiet, D block, naples yellow, golfcourse management, iron levels, punk rock mediocrity, more faces, strange ideals) back again: plotless writing, movie nights (no social skills), bus stops, waitingfor George, rain au centreville, count words, count sheep, count years (its been seinen.) hearts painted on sl eev es, w ai ti n gf or G eor ge, tame ego, wi l d str awber r i es, contr i v ed/abstr act, the future? no idea. See you later
Sarah Fenwick It has been a long road we have traveled on, I can't believe this is the end... or rather the beginning. After only tzvo years at Mulgrave I am amazed at the remarkable people l have met, and friends I have made. Thanks to my friends fo r always being there, through the good and bad, you made the aging my every decision and believing in me in under all circumstances. We have finally made it everyone, to the beginning o f our incredible lives. Good luck. And remember... Take the road less traveled; it will make all the difference.

"You tricked me", Dallas. (Good memories from Flying U Horse Ranch). I will never forget the Bamfield Trip (the most adventuresome school trip ever), and how I missed the St. Louis-Vancouver game which I had 5th row seats for, as the ferry was delayed by 2 « hours. Grade 12 has gone by quickly. So many tests, so little time to study. I got my highest academic mark ever, in first term Geography (Weather and Climate): 97%! Can't wait to attend Earth Sciences at LIVIC; it should be a challenging, m but exciting year. WF**

Since my first year at Mulgrave in grade 8, it's been a long journey. Despite some difficulties, Mulgrave has come to be a special place for me, although I cannot wait until the last day o f school. For the people that I love and even fo r the people that I dislike, I wish you happiness and success fo r the future. Sara King I came to Midgrave for grade 6, after a year in the Caribbean and nine years in England. I met one o f my best friends, Andrea, and people who told me to spell 'organised' with a ‘z ’. Grade 7 we were still in the North Shore Winter Club; grade 8 we saw the portable on the field and capture the flag in the snow. I send my fond regards to Mr. Texter, Betty and Veronica. Grade 9, we moved into the new building; grade 10 I had field hockey, painful French classes, and the saddest thing o f all; the loss o f a friend to IB. Grade 11 saw the loss o f hair for Children's hospital and a trip to Toronto. And finally grade 12; the r etur n of ou r I B fr i en d, gr ad ski tr i p, S emi for mal , conti n uous u ni v er si ty m visits, stress, university acceptances, exams, and now graduation, prom, I exams, and the end.

Sun Min Lee I just want to say "thank you" to Mulgrave for giving me the chance to have three wonderful years. I have learned a lot in this time. It was not easy to fit in at first, but people were all kind and helpful to me so that I could improve myself. Mulgrave provided me with an opportunity meet many gr eat peopl e, whom I can nev er for get i n my l i fe. I a m gr atefu l to my teacher s for supporting me like parents, and also to my friends fo r the most amazing memories. Love you all!
Stephanie Lewis The end o f high school has finally arrived! I can't wait to go off on my own in the world and live. Throughout the past year, we all have had to deal with many obstacles, not all o f which ivere academic. We all learned the real meaning behind "hard ivork and it's finally paid off! This year has flown by so fast and has had its ups and downs. As wonderful as this year has been, I am far more excited to embark on the rest o f my life. Cheers to all the grads, hope you all have a great time next year! Mr. Lawson - Thanks for all your work and support.

I can't believe Grade 12 is over. Time goes so fast. I came to Mulgrave in Grade 11, but it's been a great two years. Everybody is going away and I know I'll miss them. I really hope that everyone's going to do well after we graduate and I can’t wait until our reunion.

I see myself at a nice place within a few years. Nice house, nice family, nice wife, nice kids, I like nice things. Not too nice though, or else people will steal itfrom you. I like steel, it's a nice material. I would like to thank my class o f two thousand and five, my people, my FADD, and my crew. I love my ma, my pa, my bro, my sister, my dog, my grandpa, grandma, grandma Peace everyone, I love you all, I truly do. Not as a joke, with sincerity. Can the grad 05, see what they want to see? People say in 5 years time, we will all disperse, I don't believe that. We are a different group, not a group o f 2100, but a group of 32. That is why we are special. That's why we are here, at Midgrave, to learn, to be special. Love out, peace in.
Michelle Mange Well you all know my name. That I swim and have recently re-taken up clim bing. I'm not at school much, and always running around doing something. 1 have been going to Mulgrave since grade three and throughout the years you have all joined me at different times. The thing I love most about this unique school is that with a class o f only32 you know a little about everyone. You will always have your closer friends, the friends that you have known for a longer time than others.. Jess, all our lives., .you'll have the friends with inside jokes, and the friends that you seem to always get in trouble with for talking all through classes with. In the end you are all a great bunch of people and have really made my lastfew years here great. Thanks for all the support with my swimming and always inviting me out even after the repeated, “no sorry I have swimming at 4:30 tomorrow morning. "
Graeme Medland The last five years were amazing and went by super fast. I'm not going to forget the good memories like grad ski trip, leadership camp, provincials, random nights at Hadi's, days at ambleside, nights at Erin's, weekends in Whistler, Christmas break, Mexico, the list goes on. The people who have had an influence on me, you will be missed and I thank you for helping define my life. I'd like to thank Ms. Morgan for everything you've done for me this year. Good friends, thanks for being there through the good times and the bad. To all the teachers, thanks for putting up with me and supporting me the past years. To my family, I appreciate everything you've done for me. To everyone I've missed good luck in the future.
Nikolas Neugebauer It’s Nicky here and I'm glad I'm outta here. For the past 5 years I've enjoyed my stay, but there are many memories and I have to go. Early morning meetings with Tony and that whole prank call with Gibson. I ain’t very good with writing these things. All o f my time here I have had a lot o f opportunities that were made available to me. My plays, awkward moments and the many friends. Film (brothel), English (best in the world). For the future I will do whatever comes my way. Variety ain't for me. I wish I went with Marcus to England but I'll find something. To all a good night and 1 hope to see you will at our first reunion. FREEDOM! (hopefully)
Monika Pawlak Apples, random singing, crazy friends fo r 4 years...wow, man am I going to miss this class of '05. Acting was my passion almost the whole time I've been here. Thanks to Donald McPhedran Gibson for that. Oh, the grad ski trip was off-the-wall. I have so many great memories and have made so many good friends. Allsun has changed my life. The ADD film class was just amazing. Nolo layed on my lap the whole year during the films. Love you Nolo. You might remember the assemblies. Yes, I act like that in real life. Sweet! GO GRAD '05!

Over my years here at Mulgrave I have had some amazing experiences and have madefriendships that I believe will be strong enough to last a lifetime. The closeness that our grade has shared with one another, especially in the past year, is something that should be cherished because it is hard to find; I defi ni tel y know that ou r gr ade wi l l be the best gr adu at i n g cl ass ev er - Y A G R A D 2005!!!!! My advice to the soon to be Grade 12's o f next year is just to stay calm - definitely don't let all the stress get to you or else you will go mad!!! I am going to miss everyone so much, and give my best wishes to the younger grades and to my fellow graduates who I KNOW are going to succeed in life. Live it up grads, I love you all!

Not many people can say that their grad year was this good, because ours was off the hook. There was more laughter than tears and more smiles than heartache (thank the good Lord). I don't know about the rest o the grads, but I think I had morefun than my entire school career put together. Sadly, at some point thefun lege and university; but hey we made it.As you all know, 1 don't say much (maybe but all I do want to say is goodbye and thank you fo r making this year super fun. I don't see how I am going to make it in sunny South Africa without my peeps. I wish you guys all the best o f luck wherever you are going to be, and please, do not get into too much trouble. To our Class o f 2005 (which includes Lawson). So long, and whatever you do, don't stress about it.

M y days at Mulgrave started with a great bang... ahh good ol grade 9. Many things went wrong I can assure you that. But some people were always therefor me. Just shoutouts to people who have been therefor me all these year... Nick N, Marcus (Moe), Hadi, Alex L ( keep it oriental man lot)... and finally Nadim a great man. We started R&R productions together and made some great movies and had some ups and downs but the experience was great. I hope we all keep in touch as I will neverforget any of yon guys. Many other people to thank:Don Gibsonfo r being the M A N and always being therefor me. Even though we had our lets call " arguments" I still won't forget all the things you put up for me and sacrificedfor me. (ie. Zoom coming and giving us the lights we needed at 1 in the morning) Marlena Morgan for as wellfor working along side Don to lead me through my difficult year of Grade 12.1 hope 1 was as much of pleasure for you guys as you ivere for me. Ben and his kayaking always kills me, the guy's hardcore going kayaking in the middle of the night. Alex the Frenchman for always being there for comical relief and support throughout the year. Luke Lawson for dealing with us all and always cheering us up on the cloudy days, " N ever a dull profession". Everyone in film you guys know who you are... FADD for life. Will always rememberyou Mr. Coheefor being the man and keeping it cool and always being the guy I could look up to. Finally, Mr. Chin who always understood me in grade 11 and taught me some good physics. I think I'm about done. Oops wait hahaha who could forget me and my fall off the mini motorcycle. That was brilliant Hadi and A lex... I'll probably have the scars fo r life but good times... Streaking is awesome and 1 hope my mom doesn't read this lol.. 1 LOVE YO U G U YS ALL ... may you all be successful during the years to come. I won't forget any of y o u ...
Nadim Roberts 3 years in a nutshell? Impossible. Highlights? Angry, content, happy. A voice, FADD, SOMA, Ball, ANBK, Yellow ties and BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE. Too many. My thank you's? Grads, amazing and unique, don't change. Mom, Dad, Neds: You are my backbone. Most importantly: RS, DG, AW, LL, MM, LH, TG. Words can't explain. You showed me I could be more and still be ME, whoever that is, I think I know him better. Your sacrifices are my inspiration. You are miraculous. Everyone, let's try to do well, and try to do good. Everyday. No shortcuts. ITS TIME TO CHANGE THE WORLD.

T he wor d gr aduation still sounds a littlefunny to me, so does univer sity but believe it or not both ar e happening to me in the next couple months. Since my early days here in grade 7 the school has zvaitedfor this moment, I have always longed for it, and my parents doubted I would even get here. I feel like a true veteran of this school, being here the majority of my school life and truthfully things have only gone so zvell because of the people in my life: my parents always wanting the best, the teachers ivho gave me the chance, myfriends who encourage me (you know who you are) and mostly my girlfriend who means so much and Iws made all the difference in my life./4s zvell there are three special people who deserve much more recognition than they receive, Ms. Morgan ivho has helped me through this . difficult year, Mr. Hardy ivho has the most unbelievable personality of anyone I have everj met and has helped me in so many ways, and Mr. Grant the person ivho 1 have had the most unbelievable relationship with in the classroom, on the court, but most of all in life. I wish everyone 1have had the pleasure to experience my high school life with the very best in their health and lives wherever that may be. Hope to keep in touch ivith everyone and I'll see you the next time our paths cross. I'm not a prep or a snob, and I don't live in a mansion or eat caviar, or own a Ferrarialthough that would certainly be nice. I have a Headmaster, not a Principal. I speak English, not Latin/Greek or whatever else. I make up my own words, and I don't make fun o f other people when they pronounce them differently. That’s their prerogative.
expression, not collar buttons or facial hair regulations. Diversity, not assimilation; that Mr. Grant is a truly proud and noble animal. Effort & attitude ALWAYS come first, it’s quality not quantity, and just for the record, it is pronounced 'zee' - 'zed' just sounds weird.
Mulgrave is my school. And now that I'm through, I can proudly say: I can proudly say I am a member o f the second class to ever graduate from my school. My name is Devon, and I I believe in the importance of personal am Mulgravian.
Bert Thompson ries: The exit sign and the water balloons in grade7. All the holes in the walls and go-carts in grade 8. Our new campus and going to the Stine valley in grade 9. Going to Costa Rica and Gambier island in grade 10. The Bamfield trip and all the conflict that went with it in grade 11. And in grade 12 there's too many good times to pick just a few. I'll miss all you guys lots, hope we keep in touch.
Kathryn Werner Basically I have been at Mulgrave since Grade 8. Some people might say I've changed a bit since thatfirst week and I guess I would be inclined to agree. I think back about my time here and 1 realize that Mulgrave and I are like two lost souls swimming in a fishbowl. Memories: Stein valley with Peshikins, the portable, capture the flag in the snow, Bamfield, doing costumes, SAC, George, ski trip, semiformais, floor hockey, Cindy's, my circle, Godfrey, Student Council, the circle o f trust, FADD, the cave, and the pool.

Some o f th e grade 5 and 6 children who travelled to Australia th is past March have been watching Mulgravians return from Pown Under with pictures o f ‘koala hugs’ since they were in kindergarten! Although we arrived looking like we had ju s t endured a long northern wintei; J H p ra

Eight grade 10 students—Hlary Angus, brandon Ayers, Kate Jewell, Edward Kim, Chris fallal, Francisco Rhee, Soma Rosenfeld, and Rrian Thomasr-vent to Costa Rica, March 2 0 0 5 , accompanied by Ms. Vipond, Mr Jones and Pr Richard Roth from Canwest Travel. The primary purpose of the trip was to work with HFH constructing a house for an underprlvileged family Aside from the dose relationships we developed with the family; the Habitat staff, and each other we learned many valuable lessons in language, building, and life in general. We spent the s econd week discovering Costa Rica by meansof bus, bike, boat and foot. We climbed mountains, swam in waterfalls, toured through mangrove-lined canals, and howled a t the howler monkeys
Refore leaving for Costa Rica, we had little or no idea of what to expect upon arrival. We found ourselves amazed by the food, the scenery, the variety of activities, and most Importantly; the friendR, outgoing nature of the Costa K\can people, or the “Ticos” as theyre commonjy called Overall, Costa Rica was an amazing experience th a t we wouldhighlyrecommend to anyone who is interested in trying new things and is willing to put in a little hard work.
