Don’t despise me when I say this: “IB subjects are not hard” . All of us have survived. Two years in Mulgrave have gone by so fast, and I faced the greatest challenges in my life, there was more than IB. I learned to just do it, no matter you are a major character or a minor character, no matter you are a hero or a slave. Let’s go, boys and girls, just do it.

Sam Griffiths "Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again." - Nelson Mandela Grad 20 12-T h e IB definitely knocked us down a few times, but we got up, and we're still here. It was tough, but me made it!

Elina Kalamkarova This is both an end and a beginning for us. I think these lyrics sum everything up pretty well: “So live your life, Don't sleep through the night, Life's worth a living. You gotta start living it right!” Timer to go live our lives, Grad 2012!

Katrina Kernaghan Were we over-worked? Yes. Were we stressed 99% of the time? Yes . Benyamin (Ben) Ressideh "School's out, Memories past, Don't ever doubt, Our friendship will last."

!

Dustin Riley You mean I have a hundred words to write about whatever I want and it will be in the yearbook? That is nuts. Also, whatever I want is a very broad topic if you think about it. I could even put in a meaningful quote like: Time you enjoy wasting, was not wasted. - John Lennon

or I could put in a substantially less meaningful quote such as: Gggggaaaaaaarrrrr. Arrrrhhhn - Chewbacca

30 words left, Pffft, I have so many words left! I could even put down the question for the meaning of life, the universe and everything, which is...

Alexander Sadler “To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believet - Anatole France Do you believe? Thanks everyone.

Hossein Sahiholnasab Many people have helped me along the way. I could have not done without the help from my teachers, coaches, and the school support staff. I also owe a lot to my friends and family, who have always been there for me. This year has been a blast and it has gone by too fast. I will always remember the good times I have spent with everyone at Mulgrave. I am who I am today because of the generous help that I received throughout my school years. I have all the opportunities today because of my experience at Mulgrave and I will never forget it.

Mohammad (John) Salamat “Graduation day is tough for adults. They go to the ceremony as parents. They come home as contemporaries. After twenty-two years of child-raising, they are unemployed.” - Erma Bombeck I will miss the friendships i have made during my time at school. Thanks to my parents and teachers.

Don't aim for success if you want it; just do what you love and believe in and it will come naturally -David Frost

W hat Zoom is All About Zoom 2011 was perhaps the most stressful 48 hours of my 15 years living on this planet. Yet, every second was absolutely worth it. To participate in Zoom, you must be focused. The idea behind the film festival is to create a short film in the style of your choice in forty eight hours. Yes, the task is simple but the experience is absolutely unforgettable. Zoom is a chance to be creative, and anyone should participate. I think the highlight of zoom for me, was seeing the finished product. It really shows you what you are capable of when you throw some talented people together, give them a challenge, forty eight hours and a camera. You never know what you are capable of, until you test yourself, push your personal limits, and take a risk! Trust me, you take risks for zoom that you would not take for anything else! Lucy Bogle, Grade 10

Mulgrave was all over Zoom this year. With 19 Mulgrave teams (89 total in the province) and over 100 students from the upper school it was quite the event. Not only did we have the most teams, but we also did very well at the awards night. Please see below for the list of winning Mulgrave films. Particular note should be made of the team from 'Inventory' who won Best Overall Film. This a first for Mulgrave and was the first time that the judges have been unanimous in their decision. Some members of this team have been competing in Zoom since Grade 7 and they are thrilled with the results.

Inventory Group: Luke Allard, Eric Bleim, Sean Bromley, Kevin Catliff, George Collister, Sam Griffiths, Nick Pallone & Will Collister (G. 4) Winner - Overall Best Film - this is a first for Mulgrave. The Mulgrave Group in front of the Seattle Gum Wall Some students in choir and band went on a trip to Seattle in April. It was a three day trip and really helped me learn a lot. We had a choir clinic at University of Washington, the professor taught us a lot of singing techniques and important techniques about being a member of a choir. We learnt how to feel the pitch instead of listen. We also had a clinic for band. The teacher was originally from Ontario. She’s currently teaching students who are not in music major but still have passion on music. We found that she had a really different conducting style then our band teacher Ms Douglas. We also went to the public market and did a photo rally activity.lt was the first time for me to have this kind of “musical” trip. It was a remarkable trip and I really enjoyed it. Chloe W. Grade 9

The music trip this year was a great experience. I was nervous about being one of only two Grade 10 girls who went on the trip, but the chaperones planned an amazing experience that brought everyone closer together. Dr. Geoffrey Boers led our choir clinic on the first day. He was very supportive and informative. We learnt many techniques that helped us not only to become a stronger choir, but to become stronger singers all together. The trip was the perfect mix of work and fun. It isn’t often that you get the chance to spend a weekend with so many musically talented students and teachers. I personally encourage everyone who is passionate about music to join us for the choir/ band trip next year! -Lucy B. Grade 10

Muck Ad&AóffufNütklMf Much Ado About Nothing is now officially over, and although it was a fantastic experience, it is somewhat of a relief to have it done! It was a long haul; we got our scripts around 8 months ago! I loved every single minute of it. There is something incredible and magical about being a part of creating something that was as marvellous as our show turned out to be. Our entire team - cast, crew, and of course, our fantastic directors, Mr Pope and Ms Costain - made this show something that I think definitely exceeded the expectations of everyone who came to see us.

I learned so much about acting in this process that I cannot pin it down to any specific skill. I could say the simple things, for example about using breathing to simulate crying or using physiological gestures to show inside feelings. So instead, I’ll just mention the best thing I learned from this process, which would have to be that feeling of understanding and appreciating the importance of everyone working together. Every single person learned to trust each other enough to put themselves out there, and then to show that side of them to our entire audiences. We learned to help each other, to support each other, and we basically became a family. I really hope that the friendships made in this production will carry me through the rest of my high school career. It has been such a special time and I know I will remember it for the rest of my life. Ellie Beverage

It was a busy and successful year of music-making for students in G4 to 6 who participated in co-curricular choir under Mr. McLean, and for G5 and 6 band members under the tutelage of Mr. Steffens. Those who were members of both the band and choir for the year now wear their hard-earned music pin. Choristers hit the ground running, with the Terry Fox Assembly in September (Choir 4) and the Woza Afrika! choral fund-raiser for schools in South Africa, held at the Kay Meek Centre in mid-October. In addition to the school performances in December, Choir 4 performed at the popular Rotary Seniors Christmas Luncheon at the West Vancouver Seniors Centre. Band members also enjoyed their annual overnight retreat at school in the fall term.

Celebration of Music was a new event in March, for all G4-6 co-curricular musicians. It was followed by the Choral Revue performances in late April, featuring musical theatre and festival repertoire. The third term also saw G5 Band members enjoy their three-day working excursion to Loon Lake. In May, a large number of G4-6 students and parents travelled to Ottawa to participate in the invitational MusicFest Canada. The festival band and festival choir both represented the school admirably, with the choristers coming away particularly proud to be awarded a gold standing this time. After the Spring Concert for everyone, Choir 6 rounded out the year with a performance at the Closing Ceremony. 89

“Night of the Notables” is the biggest student project for the Grade 8 year and covers three subjects: English, Social Studies, and Art. In preparation for the “Night of the Notables” , you carry out research on a notable figure in history. Then, for an entire evening at school, you pretend to be that historical figure. For this particular “Night of the Notables” , the theme was as follows: A wax museum comes to life when the sun sets. All of the students had the opportunity to stand on stage in front of an audience and present a performance as the “Notables” themselves. After the presentations, students stood in front of booths devoted to the “Notables”. The students, in “Notables” costumes and speaking in the firstperson, made themselves available to the public to answer questions. My “Notable” was Steve Jobs. The reason I chose Steve Jobs was because he was someone who changed the lives of millions of people by introducing incredibly revolutionary and new ways of doing everyday things. No one who has ever used a computer, an iPod, or an iPhone has been unaffected by the prodigious technological creativity of Steve Jobs. Overall, this project was especially enjoyable for me because, rather than simply explaining the “Notable” from the perspective of an observer, I had the chance to imagine I was the “Notable” himself. LÉraif It was another busy and exciting year in the library. With wonderful summerlike weather, in September we celebrated summer reading with a fun Ice Cream party. During the holiday, students read over a thousand books. The rainbow sherbet ice cream, with mini marshmallows sprinkled on top quickly disappeared! In September we were thrilled to welcome, Governor General Award winner, Marie-Louise Gay to our library. Everyone enjoyed listening to her read Caramba and draw Henry, who is a character from her new book. She was impressed to hear Stella, one of her well-known characters, described as adventurous, a risk-taker and someone with a big imagination. The November Scholastic Book fair generated a lot of excitement as the library was transformed with robots and futuristic displays. Students were able to catch a glimpse of the future as we went “To the Book Fair and Beyond” . In May, students from grades 4, 5 and 6 celebrated this year’s Red Cedar Book Awards and Canadian authors with pizza and ice cream treats. Mulgrave’s 18th Annual Spring Gala was a night to remember! The Spring Gala is a celebration of our school community and spirit and this year’s Gala was held on May, 12, 2012 at the Westin Bayshore Hotel, Vancouver with the theme of “Midnight in Paris” . Mulgrave’s Annual Spring Gala has been a time honoured tradition intended to bring together the Mulgrave community at large. This year we took that notion a step further. John Wray gave Gala 2012 the mandate of fostering community and kinship. While Gala will inevitably raise funds, John has made it very clear that the benchmark for success for this year’s Gala will not be dollars raised but rather the number of attendees. A record number of Mulgrave families and their guests enjoyed a fabulous evening of food, friends and fun. Many took advantage of our Live and Silent Auctions to purchase some great items; take in the breathtaking art pieces that the students created for this year’s Select projects; peruse the Wish List; or to dance the night away under the shadow of the Eiffel Tower. This year’s Gala had something for absolutely everyone to enjoy. The Gala Chair, Neilin Dhanji, and her team of commited, tireless volunteers stepped up to the plate and heeded John W ray’s call to come out and celebrate as a community. The energy at Gala this year was electrifying! Well done to all who were involved!

Grade6'*¡p 1»the Eatíem November 2011 was a special time for some of the Grade 6 students: It was a very fun and memorable experience. We went to Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Boston, New York, Hershey, and an Amish town in Pensylvania! My favourite parts of the trip were visiting the Hershey factory, seeing Time Square in New York, watching a Broadway musical and visiting President George Washington’s house. Joanna Joannou Eastern USA was a great experience. I was a little nervous when we first started to think of the trip and I almost didn’t go, but I got up my courage and went and had a wonderful time. Hannah Dixon The school trip to Eastern USA was a blast! Before we went, we did a little fact finding project, where we chose a site on our itinerary and researched it. On the trip, we visited Washington D.C. (my favourite), Philadelphia, New York, and Boston. We saw many awesome things, like the Capitol in Washington D.C., the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, a Broadway show (The Addams Family) in New York, and Harvard University in Boston. It was an experience of a lifetime, and I totally recommend you visiting the great sites there. Aydin Rezazadeh

In February of this year, the entire Grade 9 cohort embarked on an eight-day journey to Eastern Canada, or as Mr. Hardy would say, Central Canada. We visited three cities very important to Canada’s past, as well as its present: Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec. Let me just say, I learned a lot in all of these places. For instance, when at a hockey game ALWAYS cheer for the team with the majority of the crowd’s support! Also, sometimes dogsledding dogs will completely ignore your commands and decide to sprint into the sled in front of you at random. Oh, and no matter how interesting the scenery is, (which it was) we’ll all just sleep on the bus anyway. But seriously, I think that Quebec was definitely one of my favourite places of the many places we went. It seemed to me that it is truly where all of the Canadian stereotypes come from: beaver tails, poutine, freezing temperatures and endless snow, maple syrup, log cabins, and casually dancing with strangers at a cabane a sucre or sugar shack. The Eastern Canada trip wasn’t just about the stereotypes though; we learned a lot from the Wendake First Nations people as well. They are an aboriginal society located outside of Quebec City and are a branch of the Huron. Being Canadian is about more than what happened after the Europeans arrived, and we made sure to appreciate that while learning about Wendake culture from the people themselves. A highlight of the trip was definitely skating on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa, even if I’m not the best skater and only went one kilometre down the seven-kilometre marvel. Not only did this trip give us many great opportunities to learn about our country’s rich history, but it also gave us the chance to experience what it means to be Canadian, with our friends and classmates. I would highly recommend this trip for the future Grade Nines! by Lauren Forster

C ro ss C ountry Another season of perfects weather for our league races in 2011 made the season enjoyable and fun. All races were dry and fast, with the runners able to make the most of the favourable racing conditions. With 21 athletes from Grades 7 to 12 participating overthe year, we were able to field complete teams in most of the four league races. These were held at Ambleside, Cleveland dam, Loutet Park and Rice Lake while the zones were held in Squamish. Although runners were consistent in placing, we often had an incomplete team

which was unfortunate, but teaches a life lesson. Running is an endurance sport with the victory going to the runner who keeps going the longest, not one who rushes at the start and then fades. Cross Country Awards for the 2011 season went to Sandy W. (MVP) and Chris F. (All Heart). Many thanks to the coaches: Mr Moore, Mr Van Zyl, Mrs Turunen and Ms. Giesbrecht for all of their time and encouragement during the season.

Golf T e a m The Mulgrave golf team had a terrific season. A memorable match was against Winsor's golf team at Seymour Golf and Country Club. Mulgrave selected Mitch Thompson. Luke Allard, Sam Griffiths, and myself to go compete. Mitch and I were playing in the A group while Luke and Sam were playing in the B group. I had a very poor start to the round by having a double bogey on the first hole. I continued this poor golf all the way through the front nine, finishing the nine seven over. However through pure determination I managed to play the back nine at even par, with three birdies. I finished with a final score of 79 which is a score that I am very pleased with. Unfortunately, our combined score, as a team, was not quite enough to win the match, however it was a very good start to my golf season. All in all, we had fun playing golf this season and I look forward to the new team next year. J.J. Meakings

G r.7 Boys B asketball With Coach Yahya and Manager Cusbert at the helm, the Grade 7 Boys’ Basketball Team had many enjoyable and fast-paced practices, before and after school, throughout the season. Our team’s biggest challenge turned out to be facing Stratford Hall, as in every game we played against them, we came up only one or two points short. On the other hand, a highlight was the game in which we defeated St George’s; we ended up being the only team to beat them in the regular season! Some games were close and others were easy wins but the team spirit remained high, as evidenced by the happy faces and worn-out bodies at the end of the Season Playoffs, held at St Georges. Our team lost the first match of the Playoffs but won the two games after that in the Consolation Round. Forthe 2011 -2012 Season, the MVP Award was shared between Shayan Lakhani and Will Fuller, the All-Heart Award went to Jack DeCooman, and the Most-Improved Player Award went to Kevin Hu.

G r 7 Boys S o c c e r The Grade 7 Boys Soccer team enjoyed a successful season characterised by growth in their skills and in their understanding of the game. The team steadily improved its quality of play over the course of the season finishing in sixth place in their league. In the tournament finale, the boys played one of their strongest games of the season before finally succumbing to Southridge, the eventual tournament runners-up, in a competitively-played match. The sense of sportsmanship, effort and commitment displayed by the boys were a credit to Mulgrave. Shayan Lakhani was named team MVP, Ray Tan was selected as the most improved player, and Michael Calder was chosen as the All-Heart.

G r 7 Girls B asketball It was a year of new experiences for the who! tearp; Ms. Pinese and I had never coached basketball before and many of the girls had never played the game. Nevertheless, the whole group was committed and enthusiastic from the very beginning. In the end, all the hard work and early morning practices paid off, the amount of improvement shown by every one of the girls was truly outstanding. Our end of year tournament at St. Johns was the highlight of the season with everybody playing at their very best and ending the season in style. Congratulations and good luck in your future basketball endeavours. Coach Flo

G r.6 & 7 Rugby This year in Grade 6-7 rugby we had many successes and overcame many challenges. We had our first game after one practice and we didn’t do too well. After a lot of hard work we ended the year as a real team. We had learnt to pass into open space. We had three amazing coaches as well with a lot of rugby experience. (Mr. Sealey, Mr. Wray and Danny) We had tons of great experienced players and lots of great new players. We had some big moments when Ray and Sam made game saving tackles against Collingwood. We also got to have a different kind of rugby; we got the chance to play 7 a-side, where we had lots of success, winning all our matches at Southridge! The only downside is that we had quite a few injuries, but none too serious. Overall, this was a great year for Grade 6-7 rugby. -Sam Wilkinson

Gr. 8 Girls B asketball We started off the season with very high expectations as we had most of the key players from our grade 7 silver medal winning team back. We began with a very convincing win over Handsworth Blue and all looked good. Then from out ;of nowhere, we got hit by the injury bug and lost two of our key players forextended periods of time. In their absence, welbattled hard and had some strong showings, but just couldn’t seem to close teams out at the end of the games. Upon their return in January, we found ourselves fighting for one of the final playoff spots and had to win three of our last four games to get in. We accepted the Challenge with open arms and went undefeated in our last four games to secure a playoff spot against West Van. The game was very physical and back and forth with many lead changes. In the end, we just couldn’t handle their height and ended up losing a close one. All in all, it was a very memorable and educational experience for our young players. Some of the highlights of the season include winning a silver medal at the ISAA championships and placing 6th (out of 13 teams) in the very competitive NSSSAA league. Next year promises to be an even stronger year as we have everyone back and they all plan on working on their game over the summer. Our future is bright! Stay tuned for much more from this team!

Gr. 8 Girls Volleyball The grade 8 girls volleyball team had a very successful season. They were competitive in every game they played and finished the season with a winning record. One of the major highlights of the season was the ISAA tournament. In this tournament the girls went undefeated in round robin play finishing first. In the playoffs they made it all the way to the finals where they lost to West Point Gray Academy in an exciting third game. The girls should be proud of the outstanding individual and team development that occurred throughout the year.

Junior Boys Volleyball This was another strong year for the Junior Boys Volleyball team paving the way for the first ever Senior Boys Volleyball program. From the Burnaby league to the memorable trip to Kamloops the boys had an outstanding season. With the encouragement of watching ‘max vert’ in the University game, they showed strong development and came together as a team to challenge a tough team from Pen High. From Uzuazo’s and Frasers blocking...to Ammar and MJ’s passing...to Connor and Micahs hitting...to James and Ji’s digging...moving to Aleem and Carlos’ and Kelvin’s serving...and finishing with David’s sweet nectar setting...what a year.

Junior Girls Volleyball Mulgrave’s Junior Girls Volleyball Tearn had a fantastic season. During their eight matches and two tournaments the girls displayed a lot of heart, optimisim and resilience. During difficult games they always managed to pull together, dig deep and battled their to win or at least knowing they gave the other team a run for their money. This dynamic group of girls had an amazing and impressive season. GO TITANS GO!!!!

Junior B adm inton Team Our junior badminton team had another very successful season, winning the NSSSAA title for the 2nd year in a row and for the 3rd time in the past four years. After finishing the minor round with a 9-1 winloss record in an 11-team competition against schools much bigger than ours, Mulgrave defeated Seycove in the first play-off game and then West Vancouver in an extremely ,: exciting final. Ashleigh Kearns was superb as our team manager. Here are the awards: MVP: Celine Chen MIP: Brent Coutts All Heart: Christina Catliff

Junior Boys B asketball The Junior boys had a strong year as an exhibition team in the North Shore division. By not winning a game prior to the ISAA, and building ourselves up as the underdogs, it made our break-out Gold medal performance at the ISAA Championships, feel oh so great. Ammar summed it up best with his famous quote “who cares...we won something!”. The boys played hard as they had all year and defensively came up with many crucial stops near the end of a tight game with WPGA. Remember guys in the future sometimes you’ll only get “One shot.. .One opportunity.” In closing I’d like to pose to you a question “What would you do with it? Would you capture it? Or let it slip?”

Junior Girls Basketball The Junior Girls Basketball team had an outstanding season that focused on fundamentals, team dynamics, and skill development. The Lady Titans competed in an exhibition season where they faced cross town rivals Sentienl, Windsor, Bodwell, Chatelach, and Don Ross and finished their season with a 2-3 record. The Titans also hosted the Cypress Shoot-out Tournament where they placed 5th and Kelcy Timmons was named as a Tournament All-Star. The season was capped off with an impressive 3rd place finish at the Tier II ISA Junior Girls Basketball Tournament. The team brought home the bronze medal with a 54-25 win over Aberdee Hall and Jena Roper was selected as a tournament .

Junior Tennis Team The junior tennis team has been very successful this season. We had many exciting and intense matches; and while playing a sport we all enjoyed, we also had a lot of fun bonding with our teammates. It was especially exciting when doubles A players, Marcus and KarlLukas, won with close matches, while everyone was cheering them on. The vocal duo between Michael Ji and Yahya got the energy of the team up; and of course singles players, Ammar and Flavie, fought many tough rounds and ended up winning almost all their games. Girls doubles A players Amy and Anniqa were experienced players who always played fun matches and gave the team a boost. Alessia, Fujie, and Merina were rapidly developing their tennis skills this seasons and has made great improvements. The junior tennis team started off the season with a difficult game against sentinel and finished the season on a strong note, although unfortunately just missing playoffs.

Juvenile Boys Rugby Playing rugby this season on the Mulgrave team was a great experience. While we had a small team in both size and numbers, we truly prevailed this obstacle. We proved that our size wasn’t an issue through our great scrummaging and rucking skill. We faced teams with a greater physical size, however, we went into every tackle with bravery. Our game against Rockridge demonstrated our ability to move the ball up the field confidently while still playing great defense. At the end of the game, we were tired and beat however; we knew we had given it our best. Our coaches encouraged us and taught us many new skills. Our team worked well with one another and supported each other. We can’t wait till next season! by: Omar Salemohamed

Juvenile Girls Volleyball The Juvenile Girls Volleyball team had an incredible season working off of the foundation they set in grade 8. The Lady Titans started off the season by attending the Volleyball BC Volleyfeat tournament. The team finished an impressive 4th out of 10 teams, having to play their final match with only 5 players. The Lady Titans then competed in the highly competitive NSSSAA league, finishing 5th in the West pool and barely missing the playoffs. The Lady Titans capped off the season with an impressive finish at the Junior ISA Tournament, winning the consolation final. MVP: Victoria O'Brien AH: Angela Joannou Ml: Claire Attridge

Juvenile Boys Volleyball The Juvenile boys hada strong season this year and although it was cut short by the teacher job action (in public schools), they made large strides. The largest came in their hitting, blocking and serving. By playing a lot of three’s the boys started to really come together and understand the game. The culminating point of the season was at the Burnaby North Tournament where the boys challenged well. I am looking forward to moving on to Junior/ Senior with this group of boys to continue with their development.

S enior B adm inton The spring badminton season ended on a high note after the senior team defeated Handsworth School to claim 3rd place in North Shore. Led by charismatic captain Justin C., Mr Keleher and Dr Frewin, the senior team finished the season in 3rd place (in a 11 team league) behind Sentinel School and West Van. Secondary and entered the North Shore Finals. Mulgrave achieved its goal of qualifying for the finals by beating West Van 6-5 in a thrilling end of the season game. Unfortunately, Sentinel proved to be too strong for Mulgrave with the final score 8-3 to Sentinel. In the bronze-medal game, the team showed great strength of character as our players defeated Handsworth 7-4. Sentinel eventually went on to become the North Shore Champions after beating West Van 7-4. The senior team also won a bronze medal in the ISA tournament in Richmond. Next year will be an exciting year for the senior team with numerous talented prospects coming into the senior team from Grade 10. Congratulations to all players for a memorable year! Written by student reporter David C

S enior Boys B asketball This year’s Sr. Boys translated their individual talents to mold themselves into a strong team. Each individual was an integral part of the team’s ongoing improvement as the year progressed. The guys developed the ability to execute a high level offensive system and the selflessness to except individual roles for the betterment of the team. The guys should be proud of their achievements as they managed to crack the provincial rankings twice during the season (the first time in 6 years a Mulgrave Boys Basketball team has done so). This was a direct reflection of the top level talent the guys competed against throughout the season. The end of the season was capped with a two point loss to a 5th ranked Pemberton team, followed by a complete team effort to take down the high powered offense of the Kitsilano Blue Demons B team and then finally falling to Bodwell in the provincial qualifying match. This year’s team has laid a solid foundation for the boys basketball program to build off in the upcoming years. The Sr. Boys staff headed by JJ and Joey provided the heart and leadership that inspired the guys throughout the season, by Joshua Mullen 112

S enior Girls B asketball Our senior girls Lady Titans basketball team had a very exciting and memorable season. We started off by beating Crofton House in the final game of the ISAA Championships to repeat as ISAA champions for the second year in a row. This was followed by a gold medal at the 2012 BC Cross Zone tournament and a silver medal at the WPGA Wolves Classic tournament. In league play we placed 4th in the very competitive NSSSAA league. We finished off the season by beating Pemberton in a come from behind win in the championship game of the Lower Mainland Championships to earn our fifth LM championship in the last six years. Some highlights of the season include travelling to Kona, Hawaii to compete in the World YouthBasketball Tournament where we came in 4th, being ranked third in the province heading into Provincials, having Nisia and KK repeat as NSSSAA all-stars,and having Nisia selected as the Top Defensive Player at Provincials. All in all, it was a very successful season for each and every one of the Lady Titans. They worked very hard all season long and displayed exemplary levels of commitment, determination, sportsmanship and competitive excellence.

Senior Tennis Mulgrave’s Senior Tennis team had an outstanding year placing top four on the North Shore and earning a spot at the BC provincials from 24th- 26th May at Burnaby Tennis club. The scorching sun spurred our team on as we battled through our challenging draw. Each day saw us grow from strength to strength and our team performances improved with each game we played. We had 4 Gr12s play their final high school tennis career; Nicole M., Michelle L. MC de B., and Armaan A. with justifiable determination the latter completed his bucket list of winning shots. S enior Boys Rugby From May 26th to June 2nd the Mulgrave Senior Boys Rugby Team competed in their first ever Provincial tournament. We achieved our long term goal and placed 7th overall in the province. To the grade 12s who led this team, your character, leadership and commitment has set a high standard. On behalf of the coaches, it has been a real pleasure and a ton fun to work with you. Many of you started playing rugby at Mulgrave in its first few years and you are now in the history books as the first group, to not only make it to provincials, but also to finish in 7th place. You, along with your teammates, worked hard and deserve this accomplishment! To the future rugby teams at Mulgrave, the bar has been set. Let's make sure we stay true to our core values, strive to improve and keep raising the standard! Gareth Ronald-Jones

S enior Boys Soccer The Senior boys soccer team had a very productive and successful season which began with a trip to Victoria to take part in the ISA tournament. These first competitive matches of the season allowed the team to become better accustomed to playing together, as well as to work on different formations and identify areas for further improvement priorto starting our regular season. Competition in our North Shore league proved to be very challenging with our Titan footballers being competitive in every match; we qualified for the provincials and our season culminated in a second place finish.Players receiving recognition this year on the North shore allstar list were as follows:First team Allstars: Kevin Catliff Forward Gr. 12, Second team allstars: Matthew Zwimpfer Midfielder Gr. 10, Honourable Mention: Brian Oh Defender G rf 12. Team awards were as follows: MVP: Kevin Catliff, MIP: Christopher Gollner, All Heart: Sam Griffiths, by Richard Keleher

Senior Girls Volleyball This year’s team was a versatile and resourceful group of students in grades 10-12 who entered the season with high expectations. We knew we had the potential to do well as we had strength at every position and strong leadership from our five returning seniors. We got off to a slow start, however, as we found ourselves playing many of the stronger ‘AA’ and ‘AAA’ schools right at the beginning of the season. We didn’t let this get us down as we went on a run at the end of the season winning our last four regular season games to put us in a playoff qualifying game against Carson Graham. It was a strongly contested battle that went back and forth but in the end we came up just short and had to settle for fifth place honours. Some of the highlights of the season include winning a silver medal at the Carver Christian tournament, having KK and Ameeqa selected as NSSSAA All-stars and winning the bronze medal at the Lower Mainland Zone Championships. All in all, it was a very productive and memorable season for everyone. Special recognition, however, needs to be extended to our graduating seniors (KK, Michaela, Nicole, Angie and Nisia), all of whom have been involved in our volleyball program since grade 7. Way to go, seniors! You will be missed._________________________________________________________________

G ra d e 5 Boys B asketball A large and enthusiastic group of Mulgrave’s Grade 5 boys worked very hard this year to improve their skills in basketball and represent their school with pride. High intensity practises focused on perfecting the fundamental skills, as well as, playing games and bonding as a team. The two teams that participated in the season ending ISEA play day showed a lot of competitiveness, sportsmanship, and potential for the future. All players on Mulgrave’s Grade 5 Boys basketball team should be commended for their commitment to the season and representing our school admirably. See you on the court Mulgrave! 120

G ra d e 6 Boys Basketball The 27 member Grade 6 boys basketball team gave it their all this season. The team showed great progress, turning their practice skills into game play abilities, and showed a strong will to compete each game, regardless of their opponent. The boys learned about commitment to each other as a team and grew together collectively as a result. The team, to mention some old cliché’s, gave 100% and left it all on the court. Each member played a part in the team’s success and exhibited great pride in their school at the ISEA tournament. Team members should be commended for their commitment to the team and I hope that the season has inspired you to take your game to the next level.

G ra d e 6 Girls B asketball Our Grade 6 Girls Basketball team had a phenomenal season. They worked hard, demonstrated commitment and always exhibited positive attitudes. Their eagerness to learn and achieve success was obvious. It was such a pleasure to coach them and see the girls come together as a team and improve their skills over the season. They worked hard on the court: getting rebounds, shooting, looking for passes, communicating, stealing the ball! As coaches we loved your toughness and desire to win! There is nothing like being in a gym with girls who want to exceed in all facets of the game. We hope for you to continue your desire to grow and excel as basketball players as we look forward to watching this team’s basketball progress over the coming years. Thanks for a great season! Coach Newton and Coach Yakachuk 121

G ra d e 5 Girls B asketball This year, many of the Grade Five girls who played volleyball in the first term, carried on in the second term in order to further refine their pre-existing basketball skills. An intense crash programme got under way during lunch hours and every Monday after school. The girls committed themselves to acquiring and refining their basic skills: shooting, passing, and dribbling. The girls also worked on the “proper shot”, “stealing underneath”, the “give and go”, “Hands-up!” defense, and “eyes-up dribbling”. The season culminated in the final Play Day which took place on home court. We all grew together over the term where team play was emphasized over individual achievement. Although practice time was minimal, the girls exceeded expectations and turned in a laudable overall performance. As always, the coaches were thankful for all the parental support during the year. They also enjoyed watching the rapid growth of the girls in such a short space of time and I wish them all the best (“Don’t forget the proper shot!”) as they move on to face new coaches and new athletic challenges in the future. Mr. Workman

G ra d e 6 Girls Volleyball The Grade 6 Girls served, volleyed and bumped to great success this year. The team’s focus, in addition to improving their fundamental skills, was to play together as a team (3 hits every time) and to develop a greater understanding of the game. The team was hitting their peak when the Eastern USA trip came calling, leaving the team shorthanded for the ISEA tournament. Those team members that could attend and our two Grade 5 volunteers, Celina Manji and Nicole Lee, played their best and left the day proud of their accomplishments. Great season, girls! The coaches were proud of the team's efforts and know that these girls will achieve great success in the Middle School. 122

Junior Rugby The junior school rugby team had another successful season in 2012. At the ISEA Play day, the team displayed a lot of heart and determination, playing hard and finishing every game to the final whistle. With commitment and focus, the players made significant improvements with their rugby skills and learned to play as a team. The future is very bright for junior school rugby. We look forward to another fun and action packed season in 2013. See you on the rugby pitch Mulgrave!

Sw im T e a m The swim team raced to success this year. The team was fortunate to have excellent volunteers from the Upper school and savvy Ms. Roy to help the team reach new heights. Our students, many of whom had not previously swam competitively, saw fantastic improvement in their skills and developed confidence in their abilities. While the team was disappointed in the cancellation of the Swim Jamboree, they looked forward to the ISEA competition, where they raced in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butter fly, individual medley, and relays. The team placed 3rd overall! Thanks to the coaches, students and parents for their commitment to the program. The success each student achieved made all those early mornings worth it! 125

C ro ss C o u ntry The ISEA championships marked the end of another outstanding cross-country season. It was an exciting time for many of our athletes, some of whom had their first opportunity to join an ISEA sport and compete against other schools. The effort our runners demonstrated at each practice was exceptional. Many of our students were proud to receive a well-earned pumpkin at the Pumpkin Run, and our Grade Four boys earned a first place ribbon for overall performance. Our goal of seeing how many runners we could pass in the final stretch of the race spurred us on until the end, and there were quite a few 'photo finishes'. Thanks for a funfilled season on the trails! Melanie Cannon

T e a m Soyi On Sunday June 3,2012, Mulgrave’s 'Team So Yi' helped fight childhood cancer at the B.C Children’s Hospital ChildRun. Under captains Lauren J. and So Yi L., 156 Mulgravian faculty, families, and four-legged friends took part, and for the first time in four years, won an award for having the largest (and most colourful) school team! Team So Yi also managed to raise $5000, which brings our four year total to $28,000! There were many finish line smiles as medals were placed around necks and the carnival fun began. The importance of childhood cancer research was clear, and for the second time, So Yi was able to complete the course with her friends. Both captains are looking forward to expanding our team into the middle school next year, and we look forward to seeing all of our participants back in 2013! Team So Yi

Friends having fun making tie-dye tee shirts

“Yeah! Woo hoo! yelled the grade threes when it was time for camp. The first game we played was Predator and Prey, and after we did tie dye shirts. I picked the colour blue. When I put all the elastics on my shirt, it looked like a rag doll. In the morning, Melissa and Jolene found me off my mat and on the ground! They thought it was funny. For dinner, we had lasagna and salad. For breakfast we had waffles, sausages, and eggs. It was so yummy! We went on a nature walk after breakfast and saw lots of plants. While we were waiting for our parents to pick us up we played on the playground. Thank you teachers for making Grade 3 camp so much fun! I really loved it. I wish I could do camp a million times. By Tianna 133

“Man that was fun! The rain was pouring extremely hard and all the kids were very excited, but they were very wet! The first day was a very long day. The kids had to walk 1 km to get to camp! The camp looked small but had a huge forest complex. The next morning, the air guitar or

the mariachi band came in just after the rooster crowed and the camp leaders would tell us our activities. We had polar dipping, which was most people chose, forest games and danger cannon. All of which were loads of fun! I had a blast at camp!

Camp Elphistone was a brilliant experience to go through! We learned the points of the new compass: E was for ethics, N was for nature, S was for sustainability and W was for work. On the first day we explored E with the islanders, Moondust, Owl, Hawk and Otter.

I was in the Orea clan. On our first meeting at the new compass we learned about the circles of care and the word ethics. The word ethics meant the choices that you make, the easy choices may be easy but is it the right thing you should do?

One thing I learned is that weather can change quickly. It was a nice sunny day for the first few minutes and the next second it starts raining. The next day it was the last day of camp! We said goodbye to the islanders and hiked to the ferry. It felt great when we reached Vancouver! 137

Grade 6s listening to the camp counselors at Loon Lake

"Loon Lakewas an amzins experience that we will never Jorget"

Grade 6 camp was in Loon Lake this year, and some people from Pinnacle Pursuits took us a few different adventures: orienteering, high ropes, low ropes, archery and rock climbing. We had free time to do whatever we wanted, the cabins were warm, the food was excellent, and we also developed our cooperative skills and we learned how to work in groups. A new aspect of camp was the MYP introduction sessions, which taught us about the MYP program which we will be using next year. Loon Lake camp was amazing experience that we will never forget and we all are looking forward to camp next year. by: Timmy Frewin, Devon Harris and Arveen Shokravi 139

The Grade 7’s departed for Gambier Island where the Pinnacle Pursuits staff led the students through three days of activities. The students learned about Leave No Trace ethics, how to light a campfire, knot tying and how to set up a tarp shelter. On the last night, the students slept under the tarp shelters that they created. What a great start to the year!

Will didn't chop all that wood, did he?

Annika practising knottying skills

What's camp without ’smores?

This year we went to Camp Arlaban on Gambier Island. This camp taught me many skills that I know I will use in the future, like how to set up a tarp using only materials found in the forest. This was a very interesting for me because it was fun trying to build our shelter in the rain. This experience overall was really amazing and got me to appreciate the beauty of nature by getting us to live outdoors instead of cabins. I hope the new grade 7’s feel the same way I do about Camp Artaban. By Aurora Cummings 141

Hiking on the trail

Thumbs up!

Grade eights enjoying the view

The Grade 8’s moved onto backpacking on their three day fall camp. The students spent their time in Garibaldi Park, either camping at Cheakemus Lake or Garibalidi Lake. On this trip the students experienced cooking on camp stoves and sleeping in tents for the first time with the school. What an adventure!

I rest on the rocky beach as I gaze out at the lake and mountains in the distance. The lake, sitting so still that it looks like it’s just a photograph. There is a blue pureness to the water, and surreal freshness to the trees in the mountains. This is a place I will never forget.

Travelling by kayak, the Grade 9 students headed into Indian Arm for their three day camp. A new mode of expedition for these students they learned how to pack and paddle a double kayak improving their team building skills. Led by Deep Cove Canoe and Kayaks the Grade 9’s revisited sleeping under tarps. While it was a rather wet experience the students were able to have fun despite the weather!

My kayaking trip experience was not how I had imagined it would be. Every day we kayaked and I would get completely soaked from head to toe! I remember the first day, I was so relieved when we finally hit our camp site after kayaking for two hours. Every day we had to wake up early, and I think I was still half asleep most of the time. The plus side to this trip was that I got to see so many things when kayaking; there were jellyfish and otters... or were they seals? Anyway, even though it was tiring and wet, overall it was a fun trip and a great experience.

By Emily Chow 145

Backpacking was the mode of travel for the Grade 10 Fall Camp. The students were divided into three groups and each group went to a different area. The majority of the grade went off the backside of Whistler mountain into the Musical Bumps. While the other two groups were at Marriott Basin and Cerise Creek off of the Duffy Lake Road. The groups practiced route planning, map reading and built on their camp craft skills from the previous years of camp at Mulgrave.

Enjoying the Marriot Basin!

On September 14,2011 nine boys, two girls and a teacher were left on the side of the Pemberton highway. We had large backpacks, candy and tons of enthusiasm and were headed to Marriot Basin, a gorgeous sub-alpine meadow fit between glacier-topped mountains for two nights. We experienced nearly every sort of weather, our pen ink froze and our boots were a swamp, but we could all say that it was probably the best camping trip we'd ever been on. The scenery was stunning and I doubt any of us will ever think of David in the same way.

Duke of Edinburgh Avalanche Certificate Course: Feb 4-5, 2012 Participants: Rose Gallo, Megan Moffatt, MJ Mayo, Connor Stanton, Justin Smyth, Mitch Maddill, Fraser Christian, Matthew Zwimpher, Isabelle Kirkwood Chaperone: Ali McTavish In preparation for a winter ski trip, the students spent a weekend on Seymour Mountain completing their AST Level 1 certification through Canada West Mountain School. Spending part of the time in the classroom learning theory and part of the time on snowshoes in the Seymour backcountry, the students came away with an appreciation for the winter environment... and a certification too!

Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Kayak Trip: May 5-6, 2012 Participants: Oliver Kirkwood, Tommy Luo, Josh Goh, Yuta Kikuchi, Omar Salemohamed, Jolee Tung, Kevin Fabian, Eric Jung, Jena Roper, Alyssa Witts, Samantha Botrill, Andrew French, Curren Page Chaperones: Brad Ovenell Carter, Ali McTavish This one night trip to Gambier Island was used as both a qualifying journey for the Bronze students and a practice journey for the Gold students. Leaving from Bowen Island the group paddled along the island until Hood Point where they stopped for lunch. After lunch and learning about following a bearing, the students made a successful crossing over to Gambier Island and Halkett Bay Provincial Park. Camp game and campfire at night were on the agenda to make for an entertaining evening. The next day we loaded up our boats and paddled back to Snug Cove on a similar route that we

Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Horseback Trip: May 12-13, 2012 Participants: Aine Corrigan-Frost, Bronwyn Carere, Freya Ma, Emily Chow, Hyesun Choi, Jamilla Janmohamed, Ji Na You, Lauren Forster, Sandra Thies, Sarah Halldorson, Sophia Chappell, Angela Joannou, Benny Jean Cytrynbaum Chaperones: Carrie Turunen, Ali McTavish Giddy up! This one night trip up to Darcy was quite the experience. We had a range of ability levels on this trip, from students who had never ridden a horse to those who rode almost daily. The trip was great with each girl getting matched with a horse. We learned how to tack and un-tack a horse, skills of riding through narrow trails - up and down hills. I think that each girl formed an attachment with their horse and an appreciation for horseback expeditions.

Duke of Edinburgh Silver Kayak Trip: April 27-29, 2012 Participants: Flo Belanger-Jones, Ammar Karmali, Celine Chen, Annika Lee, Crystal Cheng, Anisha Navaratnam, Jasmine Meikle, Chris French, Rose Gallo, Grayson O’Brien, Sophia Gupta, Alex Stedman, Noah Guld, Connor Stanton, Justin Smyth, Isabelle Kirkwood Chaperones: Kathryn Clark, Natassja Alder, Bambi Roy, Ali McTavish Leaving the school at recess the large group made its way to Sechelt Inlet for three days of paddling. Dividing into two groups, each group departed from the same place, but made their way to different provincial park camp sites for the two nights. On the second day the student met up for lunch, swapping stories and socializing. Each student on the trip took an active leadership role while on the camp - true to Duke of Edinburgh standards.

Duke of Edinburgh Gold Kayak Trip: June 21-25, 2012 Participants: Toby Roper, Nicholas Durrans, Yannis Willi, Feiyi Kuai, Gloria Feng, Josh Goh, Tommy Luo Chaperones: Brad Ovenell-Carter, Ali McTavish This five day kayak expedition left launched from Cortes Island after a very early meeting time of 5:15am at Mulgrave. We paddled into Desolation Sound, spending the first night on Martin Island and the next two nights at Tenedos Bay. Unfortunately, we were treated with the largest amount of rainfall for one day that Desolation Sound has experienced in forty years. However, besides the one wet day, the rest of the trip saw sunshine and perfect paddling conditions with students experiencing the beauty that Desolation Sound offers.

WINTER CAMPS: Feb 9-11,2012; Mar 2-4, 2012 The second year of winter camps at the school did not disappoint. Many students felt that this was their favorite camping experience while at Mulgrave! The grade was divided into two and sent out for three days to Manning Park on two separate occasions. The first night was spent at Lone Duck two learning how to set up and use a winter camp and building snow kitchens which always sparks their creativity. Snowshoeing down to the lodge we spent the afternoon out doing a rotation of activities including avalanche awareness, social studies assignments and map and compass work. The second night was spent in cabins but before we headed to bed the group either tobogganed or skated for their evening activities. Waking up on the third day the students participated in another skate ski lesson before heading home for some rest!

152

HALF DAY EXPERIENCES: Jan-Mar, 2012 Grade 8 Snowshoe One day of snowshoeing was done on Cypress Mountain where the students played games and walked through the myriad of trails available at the Nordic area of Cypress. The second day, led by the Grade 10 Outdoor Leaders, the grade 8’s went to Seymour Mountain and were introduced to avalanche awareness by Rose Gallo, Connor Stanton and Nicky Allen. Grade 9 Cross Country Two lessons were spent on Cypress Mountain where the qualified staff took the Grade 9’s through a series of skills to allow for competent cross country skiers by the end! Grade 10 Skate Ski The Grade 10’s spent one day at Cypress Mountain learning how to skate ski. Most found the hills of Cypress Nordic area quite the challenge in this new form of skiing. The second lesson was completed while at their winter camp

153

Grade 8 Kayak Day Trip: June 13, 2012 In June the Grade 8’s left the school for an entire day to learn the essentials of kayaking in Deep Cove. This day trip saw the students learning how to pack and carry a kayak, decipher a chart and how long it takes to paddle, as well as revisiting tarps and knots. The other half of the day was spent on the water, learning kayaking strokes and on water safety. The students should be very well prepared for their Grade 9 Fall Camp next year!

Grade 7 Day Hike: June 14, 2012 In June the Grade 7’s spent a day hiking in Lynn Headwaters Provincial Park. While on the trip the students learned the essentials of group pacing and group management. They learned how to use a camp stove and boiled water for hot chocolate at lunch time and also learned how to set up a tent. These two skills will come in handy for their Grade 8 backpacking trip next fall!

Climbing Club - Outdoor Climbing in Squamish: May 11, Participants: Zoe Ablett, Martin Arbrary, Carmen Canteli, Brent Coutts, Marcus Hann, Rose Gallo, Connor Hughes, Zakir Jamal, Keeyan Kazemi, Abigail Korbin, Khylam Lalani, Jasmine Meikle, Daniel Moffatt, Megan Moffatt, Will Pullen, Connor Stanton, Justin Smyth, Krishna Vijayakumar Chaperones: Mike Olynyk, Bambi Roy, AN McTavish Heading to the Smoke Bluffs for a day of outdoor climbing, the Mulgrave Climbing Club picked a bluebird day to finish off their year. We had about seven different routes set up for us and after a thorough safety talk the students were on belay and tackling the rock. Totally different from the indoor climbing that we have done all year, the students found the granite more challenging, exciting and intimidating. A great area with routes for all ability levels - some students even learnt to belay for the first time! Stopping only for the BBQ lunch, the students climbed until 2:15pm when it was time to gather the gear and meet the bus to go back to West Vancouver. What a great way to finish off the year of climbing!
