L A U R A W A L S H . B IO Laura was born in Alberta and grew up in Victoria. She earned a BA at UVic (History & Slavonic Studies), which included a year of study at Moscow State University. She returned to M oscow after graduation intent on pursuing graduate studies in History but a job opportunity as Developm ent Executive for the W orld Association of Girl G uides and Girl Scouts proved too good to pass up. Laura spent the early 1990s working in Russia and the form er Soviet republics, followed by what she later described as an 'accidental' career in fundraising Laura has enjoyed raising money for the Royal BC Museum, Pearson College, and BC C ancer Foundation. A Certified Fundraising Executive, Laura is passionate about philanthropy and is an active volunteer on several boards. Laura and her husband Roman are proud parents of two daughters Elizabeth and Mira, one studying International Developm ent at the University of O ttawa and the other currently in Grade 12 with plans to study M athem atics and Philosophy. — D a n ie l H . P in k
A little bit over a decade ago, Daniel Pink made this claim in his seminal book A Whole New Mind. In it, he spoke of a 'Right Brain Rising' to argue that in order for people to achieve fulfilment, and solve tomorrow's most challenging problems, a wholeminded approach is needed (one where both the left and right brain are developed and engaged.) This is why I find an IB education so effective. By equally emphasising math, science, arts, languages and humanities from early childhood through G12, we are preparing students for success not only in university, but beyond. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) academic programmes overlook the true purpose, which is to teach students how to thrive m ambiguity and give them tools for success in life.
Ask Mrs. Clark about her childhood and she shares that she spent most of her free time enjoying the outdoors and playing sports. These loves carried through into adulthood and, after arriving in Canada, they inspired Kathryn to learn to skate and play hockey. Starting at the young age of 38, she quickly became known as a fierce player earning her spots on both a women's and co-ed team in North Vancouver. Looking for Kathryn on a Friday night? You will find her with one of her teams playing right 'D' or right wing at an ice rink nearby.

EASTERN CANADA
"Not all lessons are best taught inside a classroom." - Lee Hardy That was the spirit behind our G9 Eastern Canada trip, which had us learning through interactive battle re-enactments at the Plains of Abraham, a multimedia treasure hunt spanning two exhibits at the Musée McCord, as well as visits to Parliament Hill. We experienced Canadian culture in a way that is unique to the geographic areas we visited including a visit to Bell Centre to learn about Quebec's distinctive culture of sport and leisure where, in true Québécois tradition, 'you don't just watch a game, you experience if. Along the way, we also visited a cabane à sucre (sugar shack) that has been in the same family for over three generations. Other highlights were a stop at the famous Ice Hotel, and dog sledding in the frigid winter weather that our east coast compatriots endure (a valuable lesson in empathy!)

As Principal for the Day, Madelaine handed out Merit Certificates and, more importantly, gave JS students 10 extra minutes of recess. This year, we learned how cultures have evolved over centuries by hopping onto IP's 'Magic School Bus'.
We laughed at the creative license of our G6 and G3s as they re imagined classic favourites like the Three Little Pigs and James and the Giant Peach.
We also took a trip to the future with 5M as we joined them for their 50-year class reunion !
A modern take on Jack and the Beanstalk, the 6Y assembly students shared lessons and laughs with the audience.

When 8 in 10 students list the Junior School Assembly as one of their favourite projects of the year, you know that these beloved presentations must be special. Whether sharing information about germs, re-telling or re-imagining stories, or trying to solve one of science's hardest problems, our students were keen to share the lessons they learned with the rest of the Junior School. 33

On June 5th, 158 Mulgravians took part in our 8th annual ChildRun, helping to fund pediatric oncology and mental health care at BC Children's Hospital.
2015-2016 brought many Mulgrave alum back to the school through events like the Alumni Basketball Game & W inter Social, the Alumni Summer Kickoff, and the Class of 2005 reunion. It’s always a treat having alumni back to visit. Once a Mulgravian, always a Mulgravian!
CAMP ELPHINSTONE September 28th - 30th That moment when you decided not to be grossed out by putting a slug on your face and just 'doing it!'. Or that instant after jumping into near-freezing water when you went from 'uh-oh' to 'this is great'. Those are the moments that made G4 camp awesome. Whether kayaking, drinking hot chocolate, doing challenges or just exploring the outdoors, camp time was bonding time.
CAMP FIRCOM September 30th - O ctober 2nd Just a few weeks after the new school year started, the G5s headed to Camp Fircom where long-time friendships continued to grow and new friendships formed. Having fun together seemed to be on everyone's agenda as students paddled, hiked, solved team challenges and found ways to keep each other up By the end, not even the 'no shower challenge' could keep the group apart.

LOON LAKE CAMP
April 6th - 8th
The m ove to a springtime date brought along with it great weather for G6 campers who were keen to take advantage o f it and make the most o f camp. From canoeing, to archery, to raft-racing and team -building exercises, this camp 'had so much fun stu ff. Am ong the highlights were a bonfire with the teachers and an impromptu talent show in which the students sang, danced, joked and had an all-around fantastic time.
ANVIL ISLAND September 8th - 10th
After what 'felt like forever', our G7s survived quite a strenuous hike and a 900m vertical rise to arrive atop Leading Peak. The vistas and camaraderie made it all worth it. "One of my camp goals was to enjoy the outdoors and have fun," said Luka A. This goal seemed to be shared by many and, given the amazing weather, gorgeous views and great company, all students felt they had achieved it.

ROCK CLIMBING KAYAKING MOUNTAIN BIKING CANOEING September 8th - 11th
For the first time in the school's Outdoor Education programme history, G8s were given a choice of camps to pick from. Whether mountain biking, rock climbing, canoeing, hiking or kayaking, students reported having the time of their lives. Students set themselves goals at the outset: "I want to climb every rock climbing challenge and get over my mild fear of heights," shared Kayley who, like most of her peers, also sought to also make new connections with students in the class. By all accounts, all five camps were 'the best camp ever' and students continued to talk about the experience well into the end of the school year.
INDIAN ARM September 8th - 11th
Four to six hours of paddling a day sounds like a near impossible feat until you try it with friends. This was the feeling of many of the G9s as they came back from their three-day kayaking Outdoor Ed camping trip. Although it asked a lot of them physically, the teamwork, camaraderie and friendship fostered by the experience was well worth the exhaustion. By the end of the trip, new friendships, many memories, and a lifetime of memes were forged.

According to some students, you have not really learned to camp until you have pitched a tent in the snow and managed to cook in an outdoor kitchen in sub-freezing temperatures. Amidst 'ridiculously cold weather' students managed to have a great time while also enjoying the amazing beauty that is BC in the winter.
RIVERS INLET August 31st - September 4th
Highlights of this much-anticipated week-long trip included the incredible bioluminescent waters, science talks with Mr. Pulfer, lunch-and-paddle session and 'the huge catches'. The Rivers Inlet trip did not disapoint and proved to do the impossible: outdo all other Mulgrave camping trips.

From kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing, hiking, skiing, and more, Summit Days packed lots of learning and fun into one elective. Students wrapped up the year with an expedition to put their skills to the test and, by the end of the year-long programme, all achieved Duke of Ed standing. Hearing about all the adventures, it is obvious why this is one of the Middle School's most popular electives.

CON BRIO Music Festival Forty six Senior School students attended the Con Brio Music Festival in Whistler. All three of Mulgrave's ensembles achieved a silver standing, and had many people commenting on the growth of our school's music ensembles over the last few years. Chamber Choir started the weekend off with a delightful performance of three pieces and had the opportunity to work with adjudicator Sandra Meister. Their clinic included wall push-ups, much movement and tons of inspiration. Vocal Jazz worked with local soul singer Dawn Pemberton. Jazz Band performed on the last day and had everyone in the audience moving along to their final number. The trip was a resounding success!

The films, all seven minutes or less, were written, shot, and produced within a 48-hour period. This year, the theme was 'luck of the draw’ and each submission required the use of a paintbrush as a prop.
From African Gumboot dancing, Brazilian Capoeira, Indian Bhangra, Samba and more, we were inspired and moved (figuratively and literally) by a tapestry of beats, energy and flavours.

Amin Gulamani
M o dĂŠlam e H erunter Each piece in this series has a different meaning and look conveying the various things that make up a community.
R ach ael H erz The use of black and white in portraiture can be extremely striking. Each individual is central to their own narrative.
S h e lly P a rk Bourgeois' use of the organic figure in S p ir a l W o m a n influenced M e t a m o r p h o s is . The colours that are
used in the second stage are pasteltoned and jovial.
Je ssie X ia n g This piece engages the environmental issue of water pollution. Unity is present with equalized positive and negative space.
Silent Yu In this sculpture, I present a combination of the rational and perceptual sides of myself. The toothpicks that radiate out represent my thoughts and imagination.
sm
A hm ed D haram si M y project helped me to discover different media and ways to create art. I balanced feasibility with imagination.
Jo a n n e G o The sea represents the unification between all countries and shows all different races and countries as one.
J a c k y Tian In this drawing, I explored using a variety of media showing the transformation of the landscape with the passage of time and the idea of evolution and urbanization.
Ja y la n V ance As children get older the dependency on their parents decreases. No longer does the child need to hold the parents hand, instead they take the journey into adulthood.
Kenny Yang I wanted to use a funky style with authenticity in my piece, and I wanted to fully express my approach towards the bloody June 4th protest in Tiananmen Square.

Bishr Alimohamed I love you guys like Kanye loves Kanye. Thank you all for riding with me through the journey of success. I spent the whole first day of Kindergarten trying to make one friend and 13 years later, I am proud to say that I have almost made one! Seriously though, the amount of laughing fits, ridiculous inside jokes and awesome moments I have had with people here have made me who I am today. Thanks for the memories, fam. That's the way the cookie crumbles.
Jude Arafeh "Memory is a way of holding onto the things you love, the things you are, and the things you never want to lose." - The Wonder Years And that's the way the cookie crumbles.
Georgia Boddez Even though it may not seem like it, your persistence will pay off soon. Thanks for the memories, Mulgrave!
John (Han Yue) Cao High school was okay I guess. It was like having a captor with severe mood swings; you're forced to be there and one minute it’s all fine and dandy, and the next minute everything is on fire and you have a dozen assignments due, which are also on fire. Much like having Stockholm Syndrome, I want to leave now but I'll probably want to come back later due to some life-threatening pressure at university. I suppose my note to my future self would be to keep moving forward until you have a Wikipedia page dedicated to your success. I wish all of you good luck.
John Allen "Before I do anything I ask myself, ‘Would an idiot do that?’ and if the answer is yes, 1 do not do that thing.” - Dwight K. Schrute
Emma Berton Its about the journey not the destination, so good luck out there in the real world and enjoy the ride. "If Troy can tell his secret then I can tell mine... I bake." - Zeke Baylor, High School Musical
Bryson Bourchier "Life is an improvisation. You have no idea what's going to happen next and you are mostly just making things up as you go along." - Stephen Colbert
Zhen Ni Chen "Some say art is long, life is short. But now for me art is life, life is sport." - Kim NamJoon
Krista Cook “Would I rather be feared or loved? Easy. Both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me.” - Michael Scott
Ahmed Dharamsi "You may not always end up where you thought you were going, but you will always end up where you were meant to be." - Jessica Taylor
Kristopher Coppin "Buy the ticket, take the ride.” - Hunter S. Thompson
Roy (Xingyu) Gao "Graduation is a time of completion, of finishing, of an ending, however, it is also a time of celebration of achievement and a beginning for the new graduate." Catherine Pulsifer
Thank you so much to everyone who helped me to get to where I am today and for helping me achieve my goal of graduating with my IB diploma. To all my teachers, family and friends who have supported and been there for me throughout my time at Mulgrave, thank you for making it something that I will always hold close to my heart.
Chelsea Henry "The best thing to hold onto in life is each other.” - Audrey Hepburn Thank you, Mulgrave, for all the absolutely wonderful memories. You shaped who I am and allowed me to dream big. I will miss you so very much. It's been an incredible 13 years.
Madelaine Herunter A wise man named Andy Dwyer once said, “I have no idea what I’m doing but I know I’m doing it really, really well.” Personally, I never have any idea what I'm doing, but I sure hope I am doing it well.
Rachael Herz As to the IB: "Victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival." - Winston Churchill As to the future: "It is a big and beautiful world. Most of us live and die in the same corner where we were born and never get to see any of it. I don't want to be most of us." - Oberyn Martell
Yi Ling Jin "Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value." - Albert Einstein
Anniqa Karmali Thank you to all of my teachers and classmates for making my time at Mulgrave so memorable. To my Lady Titans, play hard, move your feet, and love the game. I am so grateful to have spent my last year on the court with such an amazing group of girls (+ Leduc); thank you for supporting me, laughing with me, and pushing me to become the person that I am. I am so proud of all of you and wish you all the best next year! Always remember... “Don’t let the Muggles get you down.” - Ron Weasley
Salina (Jung Yoon) Kim It has been challenging to meet the expectations of the IB programme, but I believe that these challenging times awakened my academic curiosity and it surely set my academic standards. Studying in depth in many perspectives has helped me to understand things better in general. Despite having a slight fear of what expectations will be required of me in the future, I can say that at least I am well prepared. "Difficult times often bring out the best in people." - Friends
Harriet (Hayoon) Jung It's gonna sound eggstremely cheesy, but I'm grateful for everything I eggsperienced at Mulgrave - it truly has been the most eggciting period of my life. Also, I'm very eggstatic about the way everyone in the 2016 Grad Class accomplished eggstraordinary and eggstravagant things and I’m tremendously thankful for our eggceptional teachers and staff. And remember kids, "If you're good at something, never do it for free." - Heath Ledger. Well, that's all yolks! Bi-bi and I wish all of you the best in everything you do! :)
Keeyan Kazemi “It doesn’t take rocket appliances to get your Grade 10.” - Ricky from Trailer Park Boys
Soraiya Lalani It’s insane to think that we’re really saying bye - and not just bye until September. To my teachers, thank you for your support and guidance every step of the way - from teaching us about our monarch butterflies in Kindergarten, to the natural selection of peppered moths in Grade 12. To my friends, thank you for the last minute cram sessions and the laughs over the years. Finally, to my family, thank you for getting me out of bed every morning and always keeping me entertained! The last 13 years were filled with unforgettable memories and experiences that I will cherish forever.
Milla Larjava "Individually we are just drops, but together we make it rain." - Lady Titans Basketball
Emme Lee It’s been a crazy 2,600 days at this school but a great 2,600 days to say the least. Keep riding the wave, rolling with the punches, and playing ball all the bumps along the way are just part of the fun. “Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.” - Judy Garland
Alex (Li Yin) Li Work Hard Play Hard Many times throughout my 5 years at Mulgrave, I wanted to give up and transfer to another school, but it was always my friends and teachers who convinced me to stay and keep on pushing. They say, even though everything may seem like it is hopeless, there is always a way of overcoming that obstacle. Now, I am accepted into Emory University in Atlanta, and without the support of my friends and teachers, it would have never been possible. Thank you for your support.
Annika (Shang Yun) Li Thank you for being a part of my social experiment.
Weiyun Li "I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living." - Dr. Seuss
Lucas (Chuanquing) Lu I enjoy school life at Mulgrave. Every classmate is friendly and every teacher teaching me is patient. I have made friends these two years; I have gone through challenges; I have had significant events happen to me; I have found joy from hearing and making science jokes; I have experienced exhaustion and drowsiness after some certain double blocks; I have had heated conversations and delicious food on the round table; I decided patiently to beat my chess opponent. Now, having at least 80 words, I want to wish my classmates well in their future and say thanks to my dear high school.
Phillip Martin Thank you to Mulgrave for making my life difficult but also great.
Zoe Morin "People don't think the Universe be like it is, but it do." - Neil deGrasse Tyson
"There is in every madman a misunderstood genius whose idea, shining in his head, frightened people, and for whom delirium was the only solution to the strangulation that life had prepared for him." - Antonin Artaud
Elisabeth O'Leary “Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, sauté it. There’s, uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan-fried, deep-fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp. Shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That - that's about it.” - Bubba, Forrest Gump, 1994
Shelly (Soyoung) Park "It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves."- Edmund Hillary "It's not IB that we conquered, but procrastination." - Students Thank you to my family, friends, and teachers for supporting me through two years of DP. I will really miss the unique relationship that Mulgrave provides amongst students and teachers.
Hannah Rahim "Success is not a place at which one arrives but rather the spirit with which one undertakes and continues the journey.” - Alex Noble Thank you to my family, friends and teachers for all of your support and for some great high school years I'll never forget. Best of luck to grad '16 in all of your future endeavours! You have taught us all to remember to enjoy every moment of the journey and appreciate how far we've come instead of just focusing on how far we have to go.
Angela (Ya Man) Pai "Those who don't believe in magic will never find it." - Roald Dahl
Kelly (Tian Yu) Qi "When I'm 80 years old and sitting in my rocking chair, I'll be reading the Mulgrave Yearbook. And my family will say to me, 'After all this time?' And I will say: 'Always.'" -Modified Quote by Alan Rickman (1946-2016)
Gregory Read As my twelve long years at school come to an end, I’m excited for the next chapter. Hopefully, I am more prepared than Phoebe from Friends, who when asked, “Do you have a plan?” replied, “I don’t even have a ‘pla’.” As I enter an entirely new world I will listen to Monica’s comforting words, “Welcome to the real world. It sucks, you’re gonna love it.”
Hunter Rigatti Life is a bunch of stepping stones. I started in the basement of a Church in Toronto. Then I went to my elementary school, Courcelette Public School, then high school, Malvern Collegiate Institute. My next stepping stone is here at Mulgrave. Over the past three years I have met wonderful people and created connections for life. 1 am now ready to step on to the next one, whatever it may be. Before the Wright Brothers made the first airplane they built bicycles. Mulgrave is my bicycle factory.
Sara Shahbaz "For what it's worth... It's never too late, or in my case too early, to be whoever you want to be. There's no time limit. Start wherever you want. You can change or stay the same. There are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people who have a different point of view. I hope you live a life you're proud of, and if you're not, I hope you have the courage to start all over again." - F. Scott Fitzgerald
Carl Steffens I like to live my life by the wise words of Ron Swanson; "Friends: One to three is sufficient." And you know what? I think I have done pretty well with that. I've learnt that no matter how many friends you have, always keep a few you can actually talk to. And with that, if there is one thing those friends have taught me, it is that "We have to remember what’s important in life: friends, waffles, and work. Or waffles, friends, work. But work has to come third." - Leslie Knope
Karl-Lucas Steiniger "There is only one success: To be able to spend your life in your own way." - Christopher Morley Mulgrave has played a vital role throughout my young years. It has given me much more than a school tends to offer. Over the past six years, I have called it home. From the lifelong friendships I have created, to the countless memories that I shall keep, Mulgrave has always been at the center of it. To my fellow classmates, I wish you success with your future endeavours. See ya, Grave.
Jessica Su The past couple of years have gone by way too quickly. "We didn’t realise that we were making memories, we just knew that we were having fun.” It seems only fitting to thank my family, friends and teachers for everything. You would think that somewhere in the last eighteen years they would have taught me how to say goodbye, but it still seems crazy that we won’t be saying 'see you in September' to our friends and teachers. It has been an unforgettable collection of years, and I hope the best is yet to come.
Meagan Stewart "The hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now." - Commissioner James Gordon
Saba Taghiakbari Give more than you take. Every day.
Jacky (Yin Jie) Tian If it IS important for you, you will find a way; if NOT, you will find an excuse. - Students of Mulgrave
Merina Uhrle Hannah Montana said nobody's perfect, yet here I am. Shout-out to the homies; you were the real MVP's. Peace out high school 2k 16, it was real.
Jaylan Vance Mulgrave was an experience that will always stick with me. It has been a long journey, and I am grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way especially those who have helped me carry my art projects up and down the stairs or helped me by opening a door. At the end of this road 1 have found that I have become more confident and explorative. I am excited to begin a new journey and to see how my new experiences will shape me. Thank you again, everyone :)
Danielle Wierenga It’s hard to believe how fast time goes by when you constantly lose track of it. Thanks for the memories, Mulgrave! S h atte rin g noise* - Perry the Platypus
“Standin' on your mama's porch You told me that it'd last forever Oh, and when you held my hand I knew that it was now or never Those were the best days of my life.” - Bryan Adams, Summer of ‘69
Thea Udwadia "And I asked myself about the present: how wide it was, how deep it was, how much was mine to keep." - Kurt Vonnegut
Mats Van Rhijn Invention... arises directly from idleness, possibly also from laziness.” - Agatha Christie I guess one day I’ll be the greatest inventor the world has ever seen. Thank you to all the teachers who have shown me endless support and patience over the years. It’s been real. “Get to the choppa!”
Sydney White "I suppose it will all make sense when we grow up." - Calvin and Hobbes
Jessie Xiang "The time you enjoyed wasting was not wasted time." Thank you to all the teachers for being so understanding and supportive through times of craziness. Thank you to my friends and family for keeping me sane. I'm beyond grateful and appreciative. I treasure the memories I made at Mulgrave and look forward to the new memories to come. I will miss everyone and everything (especially the cafe cookies). Once a Mulgravian, forever a Mulgravian. What a wild ride! I'm out :)
Tommy (Jiawei) Xiao "The very beginning mind itself is the most accomplished mind of true enlightenment" - Avatamsaka Sutra
Silent (Xiao Yan) Yu "YOUR voice, my friend, wanders in my heart, like the muffled sound of the sea among these listening pines. WHAT is this unseen flame of darkness whose sparks are the stars?
Kenny (Chu Fan) Yang Proud IB survivor, 2016 "I hate magic."'- Logan Zhang
Logan (Zhikai) Zhang "You need to think out of the box, and then you will no longer be in the box. In this case, you can take the box to the dumpster and throw it away." - Students suffering from IB
LET life be beautiful like summer flowers and death like autumn leaves." - Rabindranath Tagore
Tom (Zhong Hao) Zhang "If you're reading this, we made it." - 6ix God
Magnolia (Yuxin) Zhao "You have to fight to reach your dream. You have to sacrifice and work hard for it." - Lionel Messi I am grateful that I have spent three years at Mulgrave with all my friends and teachers. This is a place that gives me both academic knowledge and exciting life experiences. I have enjoyed every day at Mulgrave and I will keep embracing the present. As it is said, "I do what comes to me at that moment. Instinct. It has always been that way." - Lionel Messi

FIND JO Y IN THE JOURNEY' This could very well be the Yearbook Editor mantra - and, it was something we were often reminded of by Leah King, our wise advisor and the sunshine guiding our path. Our beloved yearbook was possible thanks to her unmitigated support. The privilege of working with Mark Steffens, Shauna Ullman, Ali McTavish, and Ana Pedrero's (Fotogrรกfica) pictures made the yearbook ride incredibly enjoyable. Their amazing eye and passion served as the compass for our yearbook pages. Melanie Cannon, a.k.a. Our Life Jacket, was instrumental in ensuring the students' voice made it into yearbook. Her commitment, enthusiasm and selfless support made the ride pure joy. It is said that a trip is best measured by the friends you make, not the miles you trek, and Melanie's friendship is one of the things we will cherish most about this year's journey. Lastly, we owe a big thank you to the many students and parents who shared pictures throughout the year. You were the vessel that navigated events, parties and games for our yearbook team. Your willingness to share those moments with us made this a much better book. As we arrive at the end of this year's journey, our sights are set to the next horizon and another remarkable academic year to enjoy and document. Warmly, Karem Planas & Michelle Noble Yearbook Editors
