A MESSAGE FROM

ASSISTANT HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Mulgrave Donors, In reflecting upon the 2020-2021 academic year, John Wray wrote, “...what I will remember most, is the sense of community that was strengthened, even as we all kept our distance.” This sentiment captures the essence of what makes Mulgrave such a special place to learn, work, and play. Our community’s resilience, kindness, and sincere desire to work, no matter how challenging, towards a common purpose - the furthering of our mission to inspire our children to reach their personal best - are some of the many wonderful qualities you exhibit. You motivate us to invest ourselves in relentlessly improving our school and the education we provide. This report is created specifically to demonstrate the impact of your donations and to share some of the stories that reflect the joy that giving to our school can inspire. This second year of Momentum, our annual fund, has been another year of successful giving. Your philanthropy enabled us to enhance much of our curriculum, as well as many programming initiatives. More transformative educational spaces have been created and professional development for our teachers has given them additional tools to provide a personalised experience to their students. We are thrilled to honour and celebrate your generosity. Donors like you are vital to our community. Every yearly contribution to our annual fund makes a tremendous difference, and we are grateful for every gift, as it is a tangible demonstration of your trust in us, our leadership, and the direction we have set. Thank you for your investment in and commitment to Mulgrave. We wouldn’t be able to accomplish all we have without you. Warmly,

Elizabeth Calderon (she/her)

ATHLETICS & PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE Our deep gratitude goes out to the Mulgrave families who have made generous gifts to help equip the Athletics and Performing Arts Centre. Together, 73 donors contributed a total of $2,496,917. From the bleachers and fitness centre, to the dance studio and grand piano, your contributions will expand instructional, recreational, and intramural opportunities for all of our students. It won’t be long before we cheer on students as they take to the NBA/NCAA-sized basketball court, feel goosebumps of pride watching youngsters express themselves with dance, and catch the wonderful sounds of practising choirs as we pass through the spaces; Mulgravians will have opportunities to explore athletics and performing arts at a whole new level, and we look forward to reporting on the many ways that this expansive space will impact learning in these essential areas of our students’ development.

Giving back is a value that has always been important to our family, and we think of making a gift to Mulgrave as a multi-generational investment. We hope that future generations, and not only our children and their peers, will benefit from our contribution. We feel that it’s our responsibility to create meaningful, positive change within the Mulgrave community - we just want to do our part!

- FARHAN & ALI LALANI,

Parents of Cairo (‘33), Xavier (‘34) , and Bianca Supporters of the Athletics and Performing Arts Centre

THE IMPACT OF YOUR DONATION

Here are just some of the ways your gifts have made a difference at Mulgrave!

NATURE TRAIL A trail was constructed around the perimeter of our school so students could enjoy the outdoors and connect with nature through their curriculum, for example, collecting leaves for art class or using real-world measurements for math.

NEW CLASSROOMS We have adapted to evolving student needs and now have two new dedicated classrooms for our Senior School Economics courses. Having regular access to these enhanced learning spaces provides consistency for learning.

FINE ARTS & FILM EQUIPMENT Film students can now use an advanced class kit which includes specialised technology for shooting higher-resolution footage and for techniques commonly learned in post-secondary education.

BLACK BOX THEATRE Two rooms in the Performing Arts wing have been combined to make one large theatre. The space allows for more flexibility and creative thinking, and the new lighting board and grid will also offer students hands-on tech training opportunities.

4

ENTREPRENEURSHIP The Mulgrave Centre for Entrepreneurs and Changemakers, and its popular entrepreneurship course, YELL (Young Entrepreneurship and Leadership Launchpad), now has sustainable funding for the next several years thanks to Momentum.

SCIENCE LABS New floors, science benches, and sinks have been installed in two more classrooms. These labs are fully equipped and students can easily and safely have exciting demos, inquiry activities, and laboratory investigations.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR FACULTY This year, all faculty and staff participated in a Positive Education workshop focussed on social and emotional wellbeing for students. Learnings have been used to support the teaching of empathy, compassion, kindness, self-knowledge, leadership, and teamwork development throughout the grades.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE A socioeconomically diverse student body contributes to an environment where children can learn from their peers and discover different ideas and perspectives. We awarded 11 students with scholarships to attend Mulgrave for the 2021-2022 school year.

PARENT GIVING The 2020-2021 school year donor list includes the names of those who made contributions in support of Momentum, the Athletics and Performing Arts Centre, and scholarships, as well as families who are completing their pledges to the Imagine and MPower capital campaigns during the period of July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021.

DAVID & SHEENAH PFEIFFER

Parents of Rhett (‘30), Bennett (‘34), and Ari (‘36) Supporters of the Scholarship Fund and the Athletics and Performing Arts Centre

“Our children’s education and quality of life is our top priority, and we’ve been thrilled with their experience at Mulgrave over the past years. We were inspired to give to Mulgrave because we were so impressed with the efforts the school made through the pandemic, ensuring our children were kept safe and with as little disruption to their lives as possible. We wanted to do a little bit more to show our gratitude and to ensure the exceptional quality and standard of education continues.”

MARTIN CUI & BELLA WANG Parents of Eddie (‘31) Supporters of the Scholarship Fund and the Athletics and Performing Arts Centre “Our family attaches great importance to children’s education and believes that education is the best investment for children. A global mindset, diversity, and inclusion have always been our family beliefs. When we found out that the school was building an Athletics and Performing Arts Centre, we were so excited imagining the smiling faces of children playing in it - there was no way we could not support it! Our family also hopes that our scholarship gift can help more children at Mulgrave.”

THE ISMAIL-KIRSCH FAMILY The Ismail-Kirsch family knows there is something incredibly special about Mulgrave. “We are living in a world where the need for being inclusive, open-minded, continuously learning, and having an appreciation for diversity, are critical for success,” Farzin notes. “We feel Mulgrave is aligned with our beliefs and that it is the best place for our children to be challenged and grow.” The Ismail-Kirschs were part of the last group of families who joined us prior to the pandemic. Though new parents since then have not been on campus for school events, Rob assures them, “The warmth and welcome we received from other families let us know we made the right decision and were in the right place for our family.” As a multicultural family, Rob and Farzin wanted their children, Lylah (‘30) and Zane (‘32), to understand where they come from. “This includes an appreciation of not only their faith, but the traditions practiced by other cultures.” With Mulgrave as a perfect conduit for these learnings, Farzin and her mother volunteered to teach a traditional cultural dance in Kindergarten, and Rob and Farzin even created a video for Lylah’s class about Khushiali, an Ismaili celebration. It’s clear that despite their busy lives, Rob and Farzin give back in spades. In addition to contributions of their time, they have also supported the Head’s Priority Fund and Scholarship Fund. “The clarity of direction and the messages from our Head of School are inspiring in that he solves for today, but always with an eye to the future,” explains Rob. “Video messages from students who benefited from the Scholarship Fund also had a big impact on us. We realised that the need is now, and our contribution ensures that these funds have the resources to continue creating opportunities for our community.” Rob and Farzin recognise the impact that their family, and other families, can have on the greater community. “Your generosity is a commitment to providing our teachers, and our students - who are our future - the tools and resources necessary to shape a world-class learning experience.”

GALA 2021

DESTINATION: INSPIRED On Saturday, March 6, 2021, Mulgrave held its first ever virtual gala, Destination: Inspired. The event gave attendees the opportunity to ‘travel’ around the world while in the comfort of their own homes. More than 220 households, including parents, students, faculty and staff, alumni, alumni families, grandparents, loved ones, and board members, gathered around their screens to watch John Wray and Elizabeth Calderon host the family-friendly gala live from Mulgrave. The event was filled with a mix of student and alumni live and pre-recorded performances, as well as entertainment provided by Wij the Magician and several Junior School jokesters. We exceeded our fundraising goal of $100,000 and raised $120,460 through ticket sales, our silent auction, and donations. And thanks to two generous matching donors, the Tan and Cai families, we secured $320,460 in total for our scholarship programme. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who made a gift towards such a worthy cause. Many thanks to all our attendees, as well as our generous sponsors, for supporting this virtual event. A special thank you also goes out to Shima Fasihi, our Gala Co-Chair, for making the gala a resounding success.

INSPIRING A CULTURE OF PHILANTHROPY

SCHOLARSHIPS AND ENDOWMENT In the 2020-2021 school year, we raised over $400,000 for scholarships and grew our endowment total to $1,881,175. The endowment funds are invested and the interest used to fund scholarships. Looking ahead to the 2021-2022 school year, 11 students have received financial assistance thanks to your generosity. This includes 4 students from Afghanistan are attending on full scholarships.

At Mulgrave, we believe our philanthropic responsibility is not only to educate our students but also to teach our students the many ways they can make the world a better place. A culture of philanthropy means that every individual in our community understands and respects the way philanthropy helps the school achieve its mission and strategic goals. It also means that every member of the school understands the role they can play in achieving our fundraising goals. When we embrace philanthropy, accountability is deeply ingrained throughout the organisation, donors are valued for more than just financial support, and philanthropic success is celebrated. A culture of philanthropy touches every aspect of school life and is deeply connected to our strategic vision. Together, we can create a philanthropic culture at Mulgrave that supports our values and inspires us all. Sincerely,

Jin Ling Bai (she/her) Deputy Director of Donor Engagement

We appreciate Mulgrave’s interactive and collaborative approach to education. This approach enables students and teachers to learn from each other and develop an understanding of the value of perspective. Important in the success of collaborative learning is diversity. We donated to the Scholarship Fund to help reduce financial barriers and create additional opportunity for diversity within the Mulgrave community.

- MICHAEL CORMACK & JENNY DRAKE, 14

Parents of Blake (‘23) Supporters of the Scholarship Fund

The endowment fund is managed by the Mulgrave Foundation, which is its own non-profit society with charitable status and is overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors who are Mulgrave parents and alumni parents. The sole purpose of the Mulgrave Foundation is to support Mulgrave School. The Foundation Board (all current or past parents) are entrepreneurs, investors, and community leaders who believe in Mulgrave’s mission and vision and continue to support our school in myriad ways. The purpose of our endowment is to provide the school with a sustainable funding source for scholarships and our financial assistance programme. The capital is invested so that the interest amount earned increases as we continue to grow the fund. It is the interest that funds our scholarships. Your contribution to our endowment allows us to expand our scholarship programme, which is a key element in attracting and recruiting a diverse student body that will enrich our whole community.

THANK YOU Over the past 14 years, Tony Allard has served as our Foundation Board Chair. He is a past parent, former Chair of the Board of Directors, and good friend to Mulgrave. Tony will continue to serve as a Foundation Board member but will be entrusting the role of Chair to Charles Chang, Mulgrave parent and Board Member. Tony’s deep and continued belief in the power of education and his unwavering support of Mulgrave inspire us to do our best work and honour the legacy that he and all of our past families have left for us. We are grateful for Tony’s service, his advocacy, and his presence in our community. We are also grateful to Brenda Blue who has served as our Foundation Board Treasurer and who is stepping down this year from her role. Her commitment to the support of our school has been unwavering, and her presence on the Foundation Board will be missed.

OUR COMMUNITY Our faculty and staff are at the heart of what we do at Mulgrave. They demonstrate tremendous dedication to their art and invest in authentic and caring relationships with each of their students and their parents, as well. They set the standard and example for living out our school’s values, and we are so grateful to them for their generosity and consistency. As essential members of our community, they also show their commitment through their participation in Momentum, our school’s annual fund. Their contributions are a tangible way to show their support for the initiatives and projects that are led by our school leadership team. We are so grateful for all they do.

MICHAEL MOORE

Senior School Science Teacher and Director of ATL Skill Development and Data Parent of Cameron (‘23), Madeleine (‘34), Sebastian (‘34), and Erin, who would have graduated in ‘25 Supporter of the Head’s Priority Fund “Mulgrave is a tight, welcoming community; the school is vibrant and innovative; we are supported to do exciting things in our teaching, with and for our students. It is a great place to work! In addition, it is a wonderful place for my children to learn and grow. They have always felt supported and well cared for; they are known. As a consequence, I am committed to supporting the long term vision of the school by contributing back to the community with time and resources. Together we make the community stronger and ensure that the next generation of learners will thrive at Mulgrave, too.”

NICOLA READ Grade 6 Teacher Supporter of the Head’s Priority Fund

“In this school, we are all committed to being the very best that we can be. There is a common goal to be caring, inquiring people who embrace and value each others’ differences, and this creates a bond. I feel that the act of giving is important for all of us in this community. It is an expression of my commitment to Mulgrave. Giving back, in every manifestation of that gesture, is an important philosophical principle to me and my family. I feel so fortunate to work at this school and be inspired by my students and colleagues every day. Giving back is an expression of my deep gratitude for being in this community and sharing the joy of seeing Mulgrave students pursue their personal best.”

We want to use our family’s abilities to do something meaningful. Education is very important, not just for our daughters, but for all children. Abilities come with responsibilities and we have put that motto into practice, and will continue to do so in the future.

VOLUNTEERING AT MULGRAVE The Mulgrave Volunteer Parent Association (MVP) facilitates volunteerism at Mulgrave by connecting parents and family members with hands-on opportunities to enrich and enhance student life. Many thanks to all the volunteers who contribute their time and talent Mulgrave would not be the school it is today without you.

“I am inspired to volunteer because I feel blessed to have our children at Mulgrave. I am continually amazed by the kind and attentive teachers and staff - everyone from the Facilities personnel to the Head of School. Everything Mulgrave has given us has exceeded our highest expectations particularly the way it has guided us through the pandemic. I volunteer because our relationship is not a one-way street! Mulgrave has always welcomed each and every family as part of the community with great care. We are in this to build the future together.”

- LOUISA ZHANG Parent of Milly (‘31), Daisy (‘32), and Alicia (‘36) MVP VOLUNTEER

“One of the things I love about Mulgrave is the warmth we all feel when we walk into the school. I certainly felt this when I entered the school for the first time. Many of us join Mulgrave because we feel the sense of community and how close the families are. This is due to the hard work and dedication previous parents have had at the school, and it is important for new parents coming in to continue this tradition and carry the torch for the next generation of Mulgravians. Each parent that volunteers helps our kids and that is why we are all here - to make this the best place for our kids to learn.”

- FARAH VIRANI Parent of Amelia (‘32) and Amari (‘34) MVP VOLUNTEER
