IB CONTINUUM GLOBAL CONFERENCE FOR IB CONTINUUM SCHOOLS AND DISTRICTS
APRIL 26–27, 2019
MULGRAVE SCHOOL | 2330 CYPRESS BOWL LANE 1
WELCOME Dear members of the IB continuum community, It is a privilege to be here at the IB Continuum Schools & Districts Global Conference, a community-led opportunity to connect with like-minded leaders and educators from across the globe. With over 420 schools currently offering the IB continuum worldwide - and many public school districts also providing students with the opportunity to complete the IB continuum – this group represents an increasingly important grouping within the IB World Schools community, and it is great to welcome so many participants to British Columbia for this event. Thanks to the wonderful preparations by our hosts Mulgrave School and North and West Vancouver public school districts, we have been provided with an exciting programme filled with opportunities for us to learn with and from each other. We look forward to hearing our keynote speakers sharing a variety of perspectives: the IB’s Paul Campbell reflecting on the evolution of the continuum of IB education; Jeanice Swift and Kevin Karr from Michigan School District showing how their district enables and strengthens the IB continuum experience for students across their schools; and Jane Drake, from the IB’s Learning and Teaching division, who will share insights into future developments in the IB continuum space. We also look forward to hearing from the multiple educators and leaders who will present the various ways that they strengthen and develop the continuum experience in their contexts. In recent years, prompted by the work that schools have done in this space, we in the IB have seen progress in how we work with and support continuum schools globally; but we realise that there is much to do. And so my colleagues and I look forward to hearing from you over the coming days, and bringing your voice back to the IB to help inform future developments across the organisation. I wish you a wonderful conference as you share insights and experiences from a variety of perspectives. Alan Wrafter, Global Lead for Continuum Initiatives IBO
A very warm welcome to colleagues from every continent to the Global IB Continuum conference on behalf of the learners and educators at Mulgrave School, The International School of Vancouver. As an experienced PK-G12 IB continuum school, we are delighted to have the opportunity to share our continuum successes and challenges with colleagues from school districts, international and independent schools across the world. While we all work in very different circumstances, we are bound by our commitment to an IB education and to students being able to benefit from IB programmes at all ages. At this conference, we look forward to input from IB colleagues from The Hague and to having conversations with other IB educators about how we give our students both a continuous and progressive IB experience, as they move through the three or four IB programmes. This is not a top-down conference and the more you contribute over these two days the more you will get out. Whether you have travelled 6 or 6,000km, enjoy our Canadian west coast hospitality and have a rewarding professional experience. Warm regards, John Wray, Head of School Mulgrave School

On behalf of West Vancouver Schools, it is our great pleasure to welcome you to the IB Continuum Global Conference. We are excited to be co-hosting this fantastic opportunity and look forward to meeting and learning with all of you. West Vancouver School District is comprised of fourteen elementary and three secondary schools. In each school, we celebrate the potential of every student and work to equip them with the conscience and character to persevere and thrive in our complex and fast changing world. We are especially proud to be one of the few IB Continuum school districts in the province with Primary Years Programmes at Cypress Park, West Bay and Cedardale Elementary, a Middle Years Programme at Rockridge Secondary, and a Diploma Programme at West Vancouver Secondary School. Each of our IB programmes enriches the breadth and depth of student learning, while increasing motivation, inquiry, risk-taking, global perspective and responsible action and service. From Sea to Sky, we are fortunate to be part of this beautiful North Shore community of learners and appreciate that you have chosen to join us for the Continuum Conference. Chris Kennedy, Superintendent West Vancouver School District
The North Vancouver School District is proud to provide worldclass instruction and a rich diversity of engaging programmes that inspire success for every one of our 15,000 students and 700 international learners. Our staff and students are regularly recognised locally, nationally and globally for the outstanding teaching and learning that takes place every day within our 32 schools. Our International Baccalaureate programmes are key components of the diversity and world-class programming our school district is known for and committed to. It is important that students learn to be self-aware and learn how to apply their skills and knowledge to varied situations. Connecting learning to the local and global community enables students to broaden their education and sets a foundation for future success. Collaborative professional learning events, such as this IBO Continuum Conference, are essential to the learning and growth of both staff and students. The North Vancouver School District is honoured to co-host this event and welcome educators from around the world. We are coming together as a broader educational community to learn, share and grow.
