JS PRODUCTION - Once Upon a Cautionary Tale 2017

A NOTE FROM THE

DIRECTORS

Our Junior School production has been an unique experience where the Grade 6 classes, the technical crew, the creative team, the costumes, and the sets have come together to bring these classic fairy tales to life! We are delighted to present to you, Once Upon A Cautionary Tale! Preparing these fairy tales with their modern twists and alternative endings has required much preparation. It has been a collaboration by so many. Working closely with Ms. Read, Ms. Bernstein, Ms. Phelps, Mr. Walmsley, Mr. Zechner, Ms. Turcato, and myself, the Grade 6 students have done a phenomenal job memorising their character’s lines, mastering very technical dances, and contributing to script writing, set design, costuming, and advertising. The flexibility and support of our Grade 6 homeroom and specialist teachers has been invaluable. I am indebted to the work and commitment from our cast of 62 student performers, our Middle and Upper School technical crew students, an array of staff and parent helpers, and our Mulgrave families. It has taken so many people coming together to make this magic happen. All of our hard work has paid off, and we are excited to experience with you the energy and excitement of theatre and this delightful performance. Enjoy!

Christine Yakachuk DIRECTOR

Co-directing the Grade 6 production with Christine has been a total joy. The sixth graders at Mulgrave are out of this world talented, and each day they bring their unfiltered, hilarious, and thoughtful selves to the rehearsal hall - which is exactly what a director needs to facilitate creation. The actors you’ll see on stage tonight are thrilled to present to you a fantastical fairy tale land. I know you’ll get a kick out of what they’ve done, and this process has only made me more excited to teach them next year in the Middle School! I hope you enjoy the show!

Sarah Bernstein DIRECTOR

As Albert Einstein said, “If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales. If this is true, we have a cast of geniuses to perform for you tonight! The Grade 6 students have been immersed in fairy tales for several weeks and are very familiar with the ways that these stories have morphed over the centuries: beginning as lurid and often brutal warnings and transforming into the saccharine feel-good technicolor of Disney. In class, we began by inquiring into the lessons taught and learned through fairy tales. Students created monologues based on a fairy tale character in their Interdisciplinary Unit and then, through workshop sessions, the Grade 6 classes were able to generate some ideas for a three-act play. Once upon a Cautionary Tale examines the morals communicated through fairy tales and questions their efficacy. It has been a great pleasure to work with such a talented and energetic group, and it is with great pride that we present the Grade 6 show to you this evening.

Introducing

ONCE UPON A CAUTIONARY TALE

What do Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, and Sleeping Beauty all have in common? You guessed it - their negligent parents! There has to be a back story there somewhere, and if there is, Fairy Springer will uncover it in Act 1 of Once Upon A Cautionary Tale: The Fairy Springer Show. Child abduction, identity theft, and vandalism are three crimes worthy of a life in jail. The Grimm Gang stands accused of all three! What will they plead and what will the verdict be? Find out in Act 2: The Boys Are Back! So, they lived happily ever after, did they? Did you realise that Snow White’s prince was addicted to apples, or that Cinderella’s prince was a slob? What about Rapunzel, who loved to rap and drove her prince crazy?! These fairytale princesses are back in Act 3: Magic Mirror Marriage, and they are all vying for the attention of one handsome Prince Charming.
