La chance m’a toujours souri, puisque le besoin
de dessiner est inné chez moi. C’est mon père, lui-même artiste, qui m’a transmis ce besoin et l’a nourri en moi dans le solarium de notre maison surplombant le St-Laurent. Il m’a appris à constamment corriger ma technique et ma composition. Je suis toujours en apprentissage. Ma carrière de plus de 40 ans a été jalonnée de tant de belles expériences et chacune a enrichi ma méthode artistique. Ma recherche de stimulation se poursuit dans le théâtre et la danse en passant par les paysages, les intérieurs et les fleurs. L’ennui ? Connais pas, puisque j’ai toujours plusieurs séries en cours à la fois. Mon travail marie des collages avec des gravures à l’eau forte, des techniques mixtes et des huiles qui se transforment en couches, aux sens propre et figuré ( un clin d’œil à ma formation en psychothérapie ), et les couleurs splendides que je préconise me rendent heureuse. I was lucky to be born with a passion for drawing. This came from my father, an artist himself, who nurtured that in me in the sunroom of our house overlooking the St. Lawrence. He taught me to improve myself in terms of technique and composition. I am still learning. I have had a very broad spectrum of experiences in my 40-plus-year career ; each one has enriched my approach.
My search for stimuli continues – from theatre and dance to landscape, interiors and florals. I have many series going on at once, I am never bored. My work involves collage, with etchings and mixed media and finally oils ; these become layers – figuratively and literally ( a nod to my psychotherapist background ) and I paint with glorious colours that make me happy. Biographie
débuta ses études en art au Musée des Beaux Arts avec Arthur Lismer, membre du Groupe des Sept ( 1967-1970 ).Elle les poursuivit à l’Université Concordia ( 1972, 1980 ) et ensuite au Centre Saidye Bronfman ( 1976-1979, 1987-1989 ), où elle se spécialisa dans les techniques d’eau forte et la collagraphie.
Elle obtint concurremment de l’Université McGill un baccalauréat ès arts ( psychologie ) en 1976 et une maîtrise en éducation ( counselling en psychologie ) en 1979, puis elle compléta une spécialisation en psychothérapie dynamique à court terme à l’Hôpital Général de Montréal en 1980. Ses récentes études en perfectionnement professionnel incluent : la photogravure avec Doreen Lindsay, S.B.C. ( 1993 ), les techniques de portrait avec pastel et huile avec Daniel Greene, N.A., New Jersey ( 1996 ) et la technique de peinture balinaise traditionnelle avec Ketut Parmita, peintre professionnel d’Ubud, Bali ( 2001 ). Ses années comme psychothérapeute et son intérêt pour la théorie freudienne se sont incarnés en elle et l’ont menée sur les voies de l’introspection en empruntant les chemins de la beauté. Son étroite collaboration avec Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal depuis 15 ans a contribué en partie à catalyser son amour pour la forme féminine et sa façon de l’exprimer. D’autres éléments liés à son expérience et à ses voyages restent à jamais des composantes importantes dans ses compositions : l’atmosphère des coulisses de théâtre et du studio de répétition, les éléments architecturaux italiens, la nature morte illustrant des fleurs et des objets personnels ou l’intimité d’une demeure, sans oublier le portrait de personnes qu’elle affectionne. Son aptitude pour le dessin représentant le pivot de son art, celui-ci est sans aucun doute figuratif.
Sa solide formation picturale lui permet de donner libre
cours à d’autres champs exploratoires comme l’écriture automatique ou l’insertion de phrases manuscrites dans ses œuvres. Sa technique mixte évolue grâce à de multiples usages de l’eau forte sur métal, de la collagraphie, du collage de papier sous toutes ses formes, ainsi qu’à son aisance avec l’huile et le pastel. La fusion de ces médiums enchérie de la maîtrise de son art résulte en un travail mature se voulant généreux, lumineux, coloré, vivant, toujours au service de la beauté et de l’introspection. Son parcours artistique riche de nombreuses expériences d’enseignement, d’expositions, de voyages et de collaborations l’ont éventuellement conduite en 2010 dans sa ville fétiche de Florence en Italie.Pendant deux mois à l’automne 2011, elle a été accueillie comme artiste en résidence au prestigieux Leighton Artists’Colony du Banff Centre,côtoyant des artistes internationaux de disciplines artistiques variées. C’est d’ailleurs là, qu’émue par la beauté du site, elle a intégré le paysage dans son répertoire. En 2012, elle a continué son exploration artistique en se rendant au Viêt-nam et au Cambodge ; en 2013, en Inde ; et en 2014, au Pérou. Avec plus de 20 expositions solos à travers le Canada et à l’étranger, l’artiste a participé à plus de 100 expositions de groupe ou présidées par un jury. Plusieurs entrevues lui ont été consacrées à la télévision ( PBS New York ), à la radio, dans les magazines et les journaux. Conférencière à maintes reprises aux universités McGill et Concordia ainsi qu’au Centre Saidye Bronfman et au Musée McCord, elle collabore également avec des compagnies de ballet émergentes en créant costumes et décors. De plus elle a fait partie de la distribution d’un court métrage en danse, Ondek, d’Ondek Productions, Liberamae Performance and Films. Lynda Schneider Granatstein est représentée au Québec par Le Balcon d’Art à St-Lambert, la Galerie West End à Montréal, la Galerie d’art Solange Lebel à Drummondville ; en Ontario, par la Towne Square Gallery à Oakville ; en Alberta, par la Diana Paul Gallery à Calgary et à New York par la Galerie 32 Fine Arts. C’est Chantal Beauchamp de l’agence Imagin’Art qui la conseille et qui distribue ses œuvres.
Lynda Schneider Granatstein was born in Montreal in
1954. She began her studies in art at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts with Arthur Lismer, a member of the Group of Seven ( 1967-1970 ), continuing with Concordia University ( 1972, 1980 ) and the Saidye Bronfman Centre ( 1976-1979, 1987-1989 ), where she specialized in etching techniques and collagraph printmaking. Concurrently, she received a B.A. ( Psychology ) in 1976 and a Master’s in Education ( Psychological Counselling ) in 1979 from McGill University and continued with a specialization in Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy at the Montreal General Hospital in 1980. Her professional development studies include photo etching technique with Doreen Lindsay, S.B.C. ( 1993 ), and pastel and oil portrait technique with Daniel Greene, N.A., New Jersey ( 1996 ), as well as traditional Balinese painting technique by Ubud master painter, Ketut Parmita, of Bali ( 2001 ). Past training as a psychotherapist and a keen interest in Freudian theory have guided her on the path to introspection through the aesthetics of beauty. Her love for the feminine form, and her unique way of expressing it, stem in part from a close collaboration with the Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal for the past 15 years. Other elements from her experiences and travels make up important components in her compositions : the atmosphere backstage and in the rehearsal studio, details from Italian architecture, still lifes of florals and personal artifacts, intimate home interiors and, of course, portraits of people she has a fondness for. She is most assuredly figurative, her drawing skills forming the backbone of her work. Extensive artistic study allows Lynda to give free rein to explore other forms of expression such as stream of consciousness writing which is incorporated through handwritten text in her work. Her mixed media work combines various uses of metal and collagraph plate etchings, all forms of paper collage, as well as oil and pastel. The resulting maturity renders her art rich, bright, colourful, lively – always at the service of beauty and introspection.
Many years of teaching and countless exhibits,
trips and collaborations eventually led her, in 2010, to a solo show in Florence, Italy, a city she had always revered. For two months in the fall of 2011, she was invited as an artist in residence at the prestigious Leighton Artists’ Colony at the Banff Centre, creating alongside international artists from various media. Moved by the beauty of the setting, it was in Banff that she began integrating landscapes into her repertoire. In order to continue her artistic exploration, she travelled to Vietnam and Cambodia in 2012 ; India in 2013 ; and Peru in 2014. With over 20 solo shows across Canada and internationally, more than 100 group and juried exhibitions, Lynda has given interviews on television ( PBS New York ), radio and in print. Other credentials include lectures at the Saidye Bronfman Centre, the McCord Museum, McGill and Concordia Universities, as well as her collaboration with emerging ballet companies in creating costumes and sets, and even being a cast member in a dance short film, Ondek, by Ondek Productions, Liberamae Performance and Films. Lynda Schneider Granatstein is represented in Quebec by Le Balcon d’Art in St. Lambert, the West End Gallery in Montreal, and la Galerie d’art Solange Lebel in Drummondville ; in Ontario by the Towne Square Galley in Oakville ; in Alberta by the Diana Paul Galleries in Calgary and in New York by the 32 Fine Arts Gallery. She is guided and her work is distributed by Chantal Beauchamp from Imagin’Art agency.
