AUDIENCE SURVEY RESULTS

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT The third Piers Festival was a massive celebration of migration enjoyed by over ten thousand visitors including Australia Day Ambassadors, the Hon Minister Kotsiras and former Premier of Victoria, Hon. Ted Baillieu MLA. The presence of these esteemed guests, as well as the Board of MAV and the thousands of local residents and members of our diverse ethnic communities is testimony to the significance of this annual celebration. The Piers Festival enables communities to connect with memories, personal journeys, heritage, emotions, traditions and stories of achievements by our migrant communities. The extraordinary stories told in the Commonwealth Bank of Australia Migration Forums touched all who were present and spanned the vast spectrum of migration pathways – from Elizabeth Chong’s incredible culinary family history to Stefan Romaniw’s post WWII dream of a better life, and from Vedran Draculic’s escape from the horrors of the Balkan War in the 1990s to Nyadol Nyuon’s incredible rise from a Kenyan refugee camp to become an acclaimed law student at the University of Melbourne. The stories were diverse, they carried profound lessons and all reinforced the importance of celebrating difference in the name of cross-cultural understanding and respect. We are grateful to the Office of Multicultural Arts and Citizenship for its support and vision in enabling this important event and to the City of Port Phillip for its support of diversity through the Local Festivals Fund. We are also grateful to Huss Mustafa and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia for the invaluable support shown for the ethos of this event, to 961 Beer for their sponsorship support and for running the licensed area and to Yarra Trams for partnering with MAV to maximise audiences and engage diverse communities. Thank you also to Arts Victoria, the City of Melbourne and the Australia Council for the Arts for their ongoing support. Multicultural Arts Victoria was proud to have produced this iconic event that importantly looked at our differences but united us all as one Australia and we look forward to marking an Anzac Centenary commemoration as part of the 2015 event.

EVENT COORDINATOR’S REPORT Over forty different community groups contributed to creating the Piers Festival in 2014, including migrants from the following culutral backgrounds: Albanian, Argentinean, Austrian, Bosnian, Chinese, Cook Islander, Croatian, Estonian, German, Ghanaian, Greek, Herzegovinan, Hungarian Jewish, Italian, Indian, Indigenous Australian, Indonesia, Irish, Kenyan, Korean, Latvian, Lebanese, Lithuanian, Pakistani, Peruvian, Polish, Puerto Rican, Sri Lankan, Russian, Serbian, Slovenian, Taiwanese, Tibetan, Tongan, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, USA, Venezuelan, Vietnamese, Welsh. The Piers Festival has matured to become a highly significant and unique event on the Australia Day program that we can all be proud of. The event is programmed in a collaborative and inclusive way that enables communities and artists from culturally diverse backgrounds to truly become ambassadors of the Piers Festival, to make it their day. The Piers Festival ties together thousands of personal journeys, family histories and our collective national achievements. Migration is Australia’s great success story. And the Piers Festival tells it through a wonderful array of sights, tastes, words, pictures, steps and songs.

I am grateful to the dozens of community members, too many to name here but all will be revealed in the pages that follow, for their enthusiasm, energy and willingness to share. We would also like to thank NAB for their Employee Volunteering Community Engagement & Giving Program. Next year we look forward to partnering more deeply with the City of Port Phillip to reveal more of the local Port Melbourne living cultural migration heritage and also with the Bonegilla Migrant Camp to explore some of the fascinating stories surrounding post WWII migrant’s first experiences in their new homeland. We will also look to mark the Anzac Centenary through the Piers Festival and to commemorate the important role played by the piers during the time of Gallipoli. It was great to see such a fantastic turn out of audience and without any incidents (save for a few splinters), we feel positive that this event will continue to grow in size and scope as more and more migrants turn out to celebrate and share culture and citizenship.

OBJECTIVES AND TARGET COMMUNITIES The Piers Festival makes a significant impact on Victoria’s arts and festival landscape by:

In keeping with the City of Port Phillip’s Local Festivals Fund key program objectives, the event also:

• Acknowledging the massive contribution of new and established migrant communities to Victoria’s strength and vibrancy as part of the official Australia Day program • Creating new opportunities for performance, exposure and new connections by emerging artists and communities.

• engaged City of Port Phillip residents, artists, communities, associations and businesses, with a high level of community ownership of the project. • raised the profile of the City of Port Phillip by drawing a major crowd to one of the City’s newest iconic venues and highlighting the site’s significance to all Victorians • achieved a low environmental impact with responsible fireworks and waste management practices in place • offered a quality, affordable, equitable and accessible community event with free entry, good public transport options and local arts group’s involvement.

As specified in the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship’s Unity Through Partnerships program objectives, the Piers Festival brought Victoria’s diverse ethnic, cultural and religious communities together to undertake a joint project, culminating in a public festival that: • fostered cross-cultural connections by encouraging community organisations from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds to work in partnership • showcased the vibrancy of multiculturalism by encouraging participation by the whole community; and • demonstrated the benefits of cultural, linguistic and religious diversity to all Victorians.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION TO THE HON NICHOLAS KOTSIRAS MP State Member for Bulleen Minister for Multicultural Arts and Citizenship Minister for Energy and Resources The Hon Nicholas Kotsiras MP has been the Piers Festival’s greatest supporter. He and his family arrived at Station Pier over fifty years ago to begin their new lives with nothing but hopes, aspirations and a willingness to work hard. The story of ‘the migrant’ is very close to the Minister’s heart.

15

As we mark the three year anniversary of the Piers Festival, and as the Minister recently announced his plans to retire from Office, MAV felt it was important to especially acknowledge the Minister for conceiving the idea of such a festival and for putting his full support behind Multicultural Arts Victoria in growing the event. MAV is very grateful and congratulates Minister Kotsiras for his vision and passion for celebrating cultural diversity and our extraordinary migrant history.

EXHIBITIONS Slovenian Historical Association Several months before the Piers Festival, Andrea Makris, Event Coordinator, met with members of the Historical Association of Slovenians in Australia (HASA) to discuss potential collaboration to present an exhibition at the event. The committee has an incredibly comprehensive record of all of its activities over its 60 year history, as well as a vast range of costumes and historical artefacts. They were very excited to have the opportunity to compile some of this collection for the purpose of displaying it at the Piers Festival. The exhibition was informative, very well laid out, interesting to the general audience and achieved great feedback. The committee also loved sharing and learning of other cultures at the event. Co.As.It Italian Historical Association Andrea Makris also met with the Italian Historical Association – Co.As-It. – at their museum and community centre based off Lygon Street, Carlton. Dr Paolo Baracchi, the centre’s Coordinator, worked with his colleagues to develop and present and exhibition outlining some elements of the migration stories of Italians in Victoria. This exhibition of images and artefacts attracted many visitors throughout the day.

16

Benalla Migrant Camp Photographic Exhibition Audiences at the Piers Festival were also invited to view a unique series of images demonstrating life at the Benalla Migrant Camp from 1949 to 1967. This exhibition attempted to capture the story of the Benalla Migrant Camp, before it is lost forever. The exhibition is permanently housed in an original accommodation building ‘Hut 11’, photos and artefacts contributed by former migrant resident families tell of life at the camp in a most authentic, moving way. The Benalla Migrant Camp was in operation from September 1949 to the mid 1960s. The Department of Immigration estimates that during these years 60,000 migrants passed through its gates, many making Benalla their first Australian home for a number of years. Today only a few of the accommodation and service buildings are still remain on the original site.

FEEDBACK: ARTISTS Thank you very much for inviting us to the 2014 Piers Festival. It was an amazing experience to be part of the event and to perform with such fantastic musical groups. We feel very proud for having the opportunity to show to the Australian community some of the Venezuelan music and dancing, and we´d love to perform again in any of the Multicultural Arts Victoria events. Cambur Pinton, Venezuelan music and dance group

‘Saoirse’ were delighted to perform at the Piers Festival 2014. Such a well organized event, with a fantastic mix of wonderful dance and musical acts. The atmosphere on the day was electric and the reaction and appreciation from the audience was terrific. The Piers Festival is truly a snapshot of the cultural diversity that exists in marvelous Melbourne! Bernadette O’Neill / Saoirse

The Glendi Band considered it an honour and a privilege to play at the 2014 Pier Multicultural Event. From a musician’s point of view the sound equipment and sound staff were very impressive and looked after us with professionalism and precision. We were able to capture the two previous acts who were quite colourful and entertaining. Once we were up on stage we were again overwhelmed with the crowd response – people from all different backgrounds and cultures dancing to our music and celebrating the event. Spiro Katiforis, Glendi Greek Band

Thank you from the Sevdalinka Choir. We thoroughly enjoyed performing at this event! Sevdalinka Choir

This festival was a huge improvement on the first one, lots of growth and good partnerships and the site has developed really well. Looks like it will grow more and more to be a meaningful festival in the calendar. Thanks again for having me involved. It was really great to see those choirs! And the site - amazing! Great work! It has been a great, unique experience participating at The Piers Festival 2014, a Celebration of Migration on Saturday 25th January. This was the first time that Slovenian Association Melbourne and the Historical Archives of Slovenians in Australia were invited, and had the opportunity to represent Slovenian community on this scale in the wider circle. We are very grateful to the Multicultural Arts Victoria and coordinator Ms Andrea Makris for the invitation. Our community was represented in a poster – panel form - story telling of the emotional departures from Europe/ Trieste and arrivals to this vast land called Australia. Furthermore life at Bonegilla migrant camp and early work experiences along with our life, as we settled into the Australian environment, at the same time maintaining and preserving our own culture and customs. Our craft exhibition displayed our unique and distinguished aptitude. The Piers Festival enabled us to share our experiences with other communities; interact and bond with other cultures, learn from them, thus enrich our own lives. We were in deed impressed by the public interest, variety of song, music, food and other exhibits, not forgetting the spectacular fireworks. Thank you to Multicultural Arts Victoria and to Ms Andrea Makris for a lovely experience. Anne Markic and Draga Gelt OAM

Kat and I would like to say thank you for running such a beautiful event. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience of serving coffee and coconuts to such a multiculturally diverse audience, enjoying the banter of one Italian man who wanted “Italian style coffee, you know, strong” We were stoked with our location, and grateful for the services provided to us with water and power. Many thanks. I can definitely see that the festival will continue to grow in years to come. with such a spectacular view, brilliant performers, wonderful exhibitions and a dazzling fireworks. It was a great day for us to celebrate this aspect of the Australia Day weekend and to hear all the different voices, languages, and laughter. Both Kat and I are from migrant families, Kat being Slovenian and Polish and me being Dutch. It was a a great time to connect with our heritage and history also. Thank you again, and we look forward to working with you in the future! Best regards, Christine McLaren Co Founder and Director of Wild Horse Cafe

It was a marvellous event, with almost perfect weather. I loved the bands I was able to hear. It is a privilege for the City Of Port Phillip to be a sponsor of the Piers Festival and to promote the celebration of our diverse and dynamic community. Regards Cr Anita Horvath, City of Port Phillip

(Duncan, volunteer) From Tim - Piers Festival:

I have lived in Melbourne for the past 13+ years and I had no idea that something as great as this festival happened on Australia Day weekend. I absolutely LOVED it. The performers were amazing, the talks were just fantastic, and the labna from the 961 bar was mind-blowing! I only wish I had known about this festival before, as I know my family would really enjoy the event.
