40 years ago Christmas was more or less unknown to the Thais. The Christmas we remember from our childhood with warm family togetherness was being transformed to become a commercial dominated event. As such many foreigners was happy to move to Thailand and skip the dreaded “Commercial Christmas” only to experience that the Thais saw a great opportunity for another party and adopted Christmas, but in their own for westerners “funny” way with a mix of Santa Claus, Jesus Christ, Christmas trees and the red nosed reindeer. 8. What do you miss the most from home? A few friends from the world of entertainment, but Facebook keeps us in touch on a daily basis.
BARRY UPTON 1. When did you arrive in Pattaya and what brought you here? I arrived to live in Pattaya 2009 after years of enduring the awful British weather, loving the climate here and the abundance of everything.

LONGHORN STEAKHOUSE - HOME OF THE ONE KILO STEAK Last night we had the opportunity to eat at the highly regarded Longhorn restaurant. (currently #1 steak house on trip advisor) Located in the well-known mall opposite Mike’s department store on 2nd road. Basically just
south of soi Diana. Having done a bit of research I knew they had a nice selection of Belgian beers with proper glasses. So I ordered a Dark Tripel as a pre appetizer and was pleasantly surprised, proper glass and all.
So before getting on with our main course selection we decided to
try an assortment of appetizers. I want to note one of the great thing about appetizer selections in Pattaya is you frequently get a variety of offerings from around the world. Longhorn is no excep-

Lastly we had the Greek salad with feta cheese which was a refreshing preparation for the next main courses. As I mentioned Longhorn is one of the few that properly ages their beef depending on cut. Not just
(medium rare), Lamb Chops and a fillet of Sea Bass. There were many choices for our vegetarian friend who said the cheesy spinach was delicious and finished it before I could taste. A baked potato properly cooked and dressed did it for him. The meats were all juicy, tender and delicious. They offer a wide range of sauces and we chose, red wine, béarnaise, onion, and a mustard type sauce, all were ex-

quisite. I should note there was a sauce provided with the SEA Bass that was very complementary to the fish. The staff was right there to change out plates as needed. Literally, all the sides were cooked properly and complemented the very large portions of meat we had ordered. So, we moved on to deserts but because we were full we limited ourselves to just three. First a Panna Cotta with Strawberry sauce. This was followed up with a Chocolate Banana Samosa. Eight pieces perfect for our group. Lastly, we opted for the chocolate lava with vanilla ice cream. I had hoped to have room for the Cream Brule but no chance. There was literally nothing left on any plate, we all left satisfied, highly recommended. Information and table reservation: 081-860-1575.

THAI STYLE CHRISTMAS Continued from Page 1 Our own Barry Upton has composed and performed a new Christmas song “OMG IT IS CHRISTMAS AGAIN”. The song deals with the down side of the heavily commercialized Christ-
mas where people are using their credit card to pay for presents and all the other Christmas expenses, and then paying back the debts over the year only to “discover” another Christmas coming back again the year after. Thailand is a Buddhist country
with only a minority of the population being Christians, as such Christmas isn’t a public holiday. However, we still are surrounded by Christmas decorations and

songs in shopping centers and hotel staff sporting Christmas outfits. Thai people like to party and so any excuse for a celebration is seized upon. The religious meaning of Christmas might not be
important to most Thai people, but they know it’s a time when other countries are celebrating and they are happy to join in with the party. Tourism is a major contributor to the Thai economy with the peak Christmas and New Year period usually being the most lucrative time of the year for the Thai tourist industry. Hotels and resorts ensure that those on holiday or vacation in Thailand don’t miss out on the Christmas festivities with gala dinners and special events being laid on. Staff in bars and restaurants can be seen wearing red and white Christmas hats whilst

enterprising street and beach vendors will try and sell you all that stuff. Because it’s all done with a uniquely Thai style it is “sanuk mak mak” (good fun). Although all of the above reasons help to explain the presence of Christmas festivities in Thailand there is also the obvious commercial aspect. Thailand remains distinctly Thai, but has embraced many aspects of Western culture and Thai retailers and advertisers have been
quick to exploit Christmas as a marketing tool. Thai people consider Christmas a “narak” (lovely) festive period, and we foreigners think it is also

ROTARY SAVE A CHILD’S EYES PROJECT In 2018 the Rotary Club of Pattaya began a project to test and help needy children in the local government schools receive glasses. So far a total of 92 children have already received their glasses with hundreds children in the re-
maining 4 schools where children are yet to be tested. The process involves asking the students and teachers to identify those who potentially need glasses. These children are then given a preliminary eye test using a simple eye
done by fully trained optometrists. Those students who would benefit from glasses
are then placed on a list of needy students which is considered by the ‘Save A Child’s Eyes’ project. Each pair costs 700 baht which is approximately ¼ of the cost of the glasses. THAILAND SCAMS Recently I wrote about a snatching case where a sum money was stolen street side during a conversation between two foreign parties. Originally the story was that the victim had met a stranger on the street who was helping him by showing different Thai bank notes and exchange rates. By showing his money to the perpetrator and how different amounts of US currency would exchange to, he left himself open to theft. While the victim was busy trying to explain to the other man, the perpetrator snatched around thirty thousand Thai baht from the victim’s wallet which was in his hand at the time and ran off. Luckily a passerby heard the victim’s call for help and accosted the thief, later taking him to the police station, where he was processed, detained and the money was returned. It was only later after the perpetrator was released from the police station that the full story came to light as things aren’t always
story was the other way around, the accused said he was approached by the victim with an offer of money exchange with better rates than the bank. As he was interested he handed over a one hundred US note to the victim asking how much he would get in Thai baht, the victim then tried to use sleight of hand and fast talking to only give him back around two thousand baht. Seeing this, the accused man asked for his money back and after receiving it walked away as he was getting suspicious and worried he would be cheated. As the accused man was walking away the supposed victim called out loudly that he had stolen his money, a worker at a store nearby heard this and successfully apprehended the accused man and helped the victim take him to the police station. As the falsely accused man could not speak Thai or communicate properly with the police, he was thought to be guilty as he could not properly defend
stealing the money in the man’s wallet was taken as evidence and kept in holding until the case was resolved. By this time criminal charges were filed and the innocent man was required to defend himself in criminal court. When the day came for the case to go to court both parties told a different story of how the events unfolded each proclaiming their innocence and pointing the finger at the other party. As there was no witness in the area that the events that took place or any CCTV footage, as by the time they were required it was one and a half months after the day the event took place and was deleted, it was each man’s word against the others. Luckily the judge handling the case was wise enough to see what was really going on and ordered the two parties to settle out the case together by way of paying a fee to the wrongly accused man and signing contracts so the case can be closed and the money re-
what they seem. The real story is not as straight forward as originally thought, not helped by the man accused of the crime not being able to communicate with the local authorities. In the end the
himself. Meanwhile the other party was pretty much a local and spun his story to the authorities causing the innocent man to be detained at the police station for a time, as he had accused him of
turned to its rightful owner. The judge made this decision because a case like this should not have been submitted to court, but as the police filed charges it must follow its due course.

LAWYER COMMENT: In Thailand we have cases that are serious and sometimes not so serious, but there will always be a way to negotiate or compromise if a judge allows it. If you are on the defending side you should always jump at this chance as it is an easy way to settle a case. Paying a little
more money is better than having to pay someone else who tries to settle the case for you when it is not even guaranteed they can deliver. By being willing to talk and be reasonable you are giving yourself the best chance to successfully negotiate though a legal case such as this. Settling on a case can
be a ticket to a new life with no need to serve a jail sentence. If you have any questions or queries, feel free to contact us at any time. To contact the Lawyer please call: 08-9911-1199 or email: info@pattayapeople.com
THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE OF PATTAYA 15
MUSIC FROM THE GURKHAS
Music plays an important part in the lives of the students at the Pattaya School for the Blind. There is a marching band, a rock group, traditional Thai instrument orchestra and a country music band, and they also like to listen to instruments that are not usually heard
in Thailand. In the past the silence at the school was shattered when a trumpeter arrived to play and shook the windows, a quartet of violins echoed beautifully around the school and the students were amazed when an Irish musician played the
spoons; the cook in the dining room, however, was not happy when most of the spoons went missing after lunch as the children attempted to play them.
Bagpipes and drums were the latest instruments introduced to the children, courtesy of the band of the Second Battalion Royal Gurkha
Rifles who made the students sit up and take note when the pipes started. There was silence as the musicians paraded around the school and the students applauded after each piece of music. In return the pipers and drummers, who are originally from Nepal and are part of the British Army, were treated to a performance of traditional country music. Once the music was over the children were allowed to touch and feel the instruments, work out how the pipes work and several attempted to play them. It was a strange experience for the soldiers as the children also felt the medals and the uniforms. Then it was over to the sports court to watch a game of Goalball, a sport the Gurkhas had never seen before and they were very
impressed, but unable to play themselves as they were in full dress uniform.
BROADWAY IN BANGKOK The biggest show songs from the West End of London and Broadway in New York were performed
flawlessly in Bangkok at the beautiful Aksra King Power Theatre by Daniel Koek, who has had a lead
role in Les Miserables amongst others, plus Harriet Jones from Beauty and the Beast, Phantom Of The Opera, etc..
They were joined onstage by some extremely talented children from the RBSO music school with a couple of solo spots performed
to perfection. The show was produced by Big Mango productions which includes

POPE FRANCIS IN THAILAND
During the short time that His Holiness Pope Francis was in the Kingdom of Thailand, he performed two public masses, one in the National Stadium in front of a crowd of 70,000 and the second to a smaller gathering at Assumption Cathedral. Tickets were allocated by lottery, and while they were hard to get for the stadium mass, they were even more difficult to obtain for the mass at the cathedral. However, luck was on the side of two students from the Technological College for people with Disabilities and one young man from the Father Ray Children’s Home.
Not only were they given tickets for the cathedral, but tickets in zone 1, as close to the altar as it was possible to sit. For one student, living with severe cerebral palsy, hundreds of miles from home and can only use one foot to drive his wheelchair, the day was to become the happiest of his life so far, when the Holy Father walked towards him and personally blessed him. It was a day that will live forever in the memories of three young students from the Father Ray Foundation, a day they will talk about for many years to come.

IS THE KETO DIET GOOD FOR YOU? What Is Ketogenic Diet? “Ketogenic” is a term for a lowcarb diet (like the Atkins diet). The idea is for you to get more calories from protein and fat and less from carbohydrates. You cut back most on the carbs that are easy to digest, like sugar, soda, pastries, and white bread.
takes 3 to 4 days. Then you’ll start to break down protein and fat for energy, which can make you lose weight. This is called ketosis. It’s important to note that the ketogenic diet is a short term diet that’s focused on weight loss rather than the pursuit of health benefits. Who Uses It?
ease, certain brain diseases, and even acne, but there needs to be more research in those areas. Talk with your doctor first to find out if it’s safe for you to try a ketogenic diet, especially if you have type 1 diabetes.
People use a ketogenic diet most often to lose weight, but it can help manage certain medical conditions, like epilepsy, too. It also may help people with heart dis-
A ketogenic diet may help you lose more weight in the first 3 to 6 months than some other diets. This may be because it takes more calories to change fat into
energy than it does to change carbs into energy. It’s also possible that a high-fat, high-protein
ing benefits of nutritional ketosis while abiding by the ethical principles of Veganism? Is there such a thing as a Vegan Ketogenic Diet? The answer is of course, yes! The macronutrient ratio of the Ketogenic Diet is non-negotiable, therefore most of your calories should come from fat, with very few soluble carbohydrates (typically no more than 20 grams daily). The consumption of animal products with Veganism is non-negotiable, therefore all meat and dairy should be excluded. As difficult to fathom it may be, there are plenty of options.
How It Works When you eat less than 50 grams of carbs a day, your body eventually runs out of fuel (blood sugar) it can use quickly. This typically
diet satisfies you more, so you eat less, but that hasn’t been proved yet. How about the Vegan Ketogenic Diet? A Vegan Ketogenic diet would appear to be the ultimate diet in terms of ethical consumption and fat loss, but meeting in the middle is not without compromise. In contrast to the traditional Ketogenic diet that is based on the heavy consumption of animal fats, it would appear that the Vegan diet and Ketogenic diet are two opposite sides of a coin. A typical Vegan diet is structured based on a high carb-to-fat macronutrient ratio, while the Ketogenic diet requires a high fat-tocarb macronutrient ratio. Depending on which side you’re on, you’re probably armed with a study supporting your argument while debunking the other. But could there actually be overlap? Could you enjoy the fat-burn-

Side Effects The more common ones aren’t usually serious: You might have
constipation, mild low blood sugar, or indigestion. Much less often, low-carb diets can lead to kidney stones or high levels of acid in
your body (acidosis). Other side effects can include the “keto flu,” which may include headache, weakness, and irritability, bad breath and fatigue. Cons of Ketogenic Diet Although the benefits of ketogenic diet outweigh the disadvantages, some health experts argue that it comes with a few pitfalls which include Triggers Fatigue and Brain Fog, Altered Blood Lipid Profile, Triggers Micronutrient Deficiencies, Triggers Ketoacidosis (especially if you are diabetic) Conclusion The Ketogenic diet can be a great way to lose weight for some people but not everyone. Although it has many benefits that outweigh the pitfalls, it is important to take care when you are switching to such a diet. It is thus advisable to consult with your health care provider before making the big move. Be ready to face some challenges after you turn to ketogenic diet. DR.KAMALJIT SINGH HEALTH TIPS:SURPRISING THINGS THAT RAISE YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE Salt, Worry and Anger aren’t the only things that can spike your blood pressure. And numbers that remain high over times can cause damage, read what else might be bumping your numbers up ~ Dr. Kamaljit Singh. The Bigger Picture: You’ve probably heard to watch the amount of salt you eat, especially if you’re concerned about your blood pressure. That’s because it makes your body hold on to water, putting extra stress on your heart and blood vessels. Salt — and worry, and anger — aren’t the only things that can raise your blood pressure. Although temporary “spikes” aren’t necessarily a problem, numbers that remain high over time can cause serious damage. Added Sugar: It may be even more important than salt in raising your blood pressure, especially in a processed form like high-fructose corn syrup. People with more added sugars in their diet see a significant rise in both their upper and lower numbers. Just one 24-ounce soft drink causes an average 15-point bump in systolic pressure (the top number, or the pressure during a heartbeat) and 9 in diastolic (the bottom number, or the pressure between beats). Loneliness: This isn’t just about the number of friends you have — it’s about feeling connected. And being stressed or depressed doesn’t fully explain the effect. It also gets worse with time: Over 4 years, the upper blood pressure of the loneliest people in a study went up more than 14 points. The researchers think an ongoing fear of rejection and disappointment and feeling more alert about your safety and security may change how your body works. Sleep Apnea: People with sleep apnea have higher odds of getting high blood pressure and other heart problems. When your breathing is repeatedly interrupted while you’re sleeping, your nervous system releases chemicals that raise your blood pressure. Plus, you’re getting less oxygen, which could damage blood vessel walls and make it harder for your body to regulate your blood pressure down the road. Not Enough Potassium: Your kidneys need a balance of sodium and potassium to keep the right amount of fluid in your blood. So even if you’re eating a low-salt diet, you could still have higher blood pressure if you’re not also eating enough fruits, veggies, beans, lowfat dairy, or fish. While you may think of bananas as the go-to source, broccoli, water chestnuts, spinach, and other leafy greens are better to get potassium if you’re watching your weight. Pain: Sudden, or acute, pain ramps up your nervous system and raises your blood pressure. You can see this effect when you put one hand in ice water, press on your cheek
ISSUE 620 DECEMBER 2019
or fingernail, or get an electric shock to your finger. Herbal Supplements: Do you take ginkgo, ginseng, guarana, ephedra, bitter orange, or St. John’s wort? These and others can raise your blood pressure or change how medications work, including drugs to control high blood pressure.
Thyroid Problems: When this gland doesn’t make enough thyroid hormone, your heart rate slows, and your arteries get less stretchy. Low hormone levels also might raise your LDL “bad” cholesterol, another thing that can stiffen arteries. Blood moves through hard vessels faster, pushing on the walls and raising the pressure. Though not as common, too much thyroid hormone can make your heart beat harder and faster, which will also bump up your numbers. You Have to Pee: Systolic pressure went up an average of about 4 points, and diastolic, 3 points, in a study of middle-aged women who hadn’t gone to the bathroom for at least 3 hours. Men and women of different ages saw similar effects. High blood pressure becomes more likely as you age, so you need to get accurate readings. An empty bladder could be one way to help do that. NSAIDs: All nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, can raise your numbers — whether you’re healthy or you already have high blood pressure. Though the average rise is only a few points, there’s a wide range, which means it could affect some people much more than others.
Dehydration: When your body’s cells don’t have enough water, your blood vessels tighten up. This happens because your brain sends a signal to your pituitary gland to release a chemical that shrinks them. And your kidneys make less pee, to hang on to the fluid you do have, which also triggers tiny blood vessels in your heart and brain to squeeze more. Hormonal Birth Control: Pills, injections, and other birth control devices use hormones that narrow blood vessels, so it’s possible your blood pressure will go up. It’s more likely to be a problem for women who are older than 35, overweight, or smokers. You may want to keep an eye on your blood pressure, checking every 6-12 months. A lower dose of estrogen may keep your numbers closer to normal. Talking: It happens whether you’re young or old and no matter where you are. The higher you’re resting blood pressure, the higher the numbers go when you start speaking. And the effect lasts for a few minutes. It seems the subject and emotional content of what you’re saying matters more than the fact that you’re moving your mouth. Antidepressants: Medicines that target brain chemicals like dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin — including venlafaxine (Effexor), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), tricyclic antidepressants, and fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem) — can change not only your mood but also your blood pressure. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) might raise it if you’re also taking lithium or other drugs that affect serotonin. For more details contact us: Whatsapp (+66)869032543. Mobile: (+91)98030-44056. Email: info@drkamalholistic.com Website: www.drkamalholistic.com
Your Doctor’s Office: You might see a difference if you compare readings during an appointment to the numbers you get at home. Named for the traditional garb of medical professionals, the “white coat effect” is the rise in blood pressure — up to 10 points higher for systolic (the upper number) and 5 for diastolic (the lower number) — that can happen simply because of where you are. The bump is likely due to nerves or anxiety. Decongestants: Ingredients like pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine can narrow your blood vessels. That means the same amount of blood has to squeeze through a smaller space, like a crowd pushing through a hallway. These drugs can also make blood pressure medications less effective. Your doctor or pharmacist can help you choose over-the-counter products for sinus problems and colds that are safer if you have high blood pressure.

DON’T BE TOO HOT ON STOCKS Many people approaching retirement are over-invested in stock markets. They may be booming now, but it won’t last forever. In its recent retirement report, one of the giant American financial services firms suggested that investors from the Baby Boom generation (those born between 1944 and 1964) were investing heavily in the stock market.[1] Fidelity reported that around 38% of US baby-boomers were, in its experts’ opinion, over-invested in the stock market. Fidelity’s view is that above 70% equity allocation is excessive. The firm also stated that almost 8% of US boomers held all of their investments in stocks.[2] At first glance, it makes sense. The Dow hit at a best ever of 28,000 in mid-November, while the S&P and NASDAQ were also setting records, on the back of a ten-year bull market (see chart).
performance on the news; especially when records are broken. All of these may seem to be good reasons to remain heavily invested in stocks. In fact, they are perfect reasons to reduce exposure. If you read any finance newspaper or website at the moment, there’s likely to be an article on whether we’re heading into a global recession. Even though what finance experts say and what really happens are often two different things (see 2008, for example!), this time there is credible basis, which I explained in a Markets Flash in October. History has shown us that a recession often accompanies or is accompanied by a stock market crash, as in the late 1980s, the turn of the millennium or most recently in 2007;[3] so it could happen again. The problem is that nobody rings a bell to tell us when the market is at its peak. That’s
nomic and geopolitical instability we’ve been experiencing for the last three years or so. Some days it feels like we’re merely a commodity-price drop, loose drone or even a tweet away from a major market crash. Of course, markets can recover – if we look at the Dow Jones, it only took a couple of years to regain its 1989 peak. If we allow
It’s also very convenient. Human nature suggests we stick to something we know, in the presumption that prior success increases the probability of future gains. Added to that, we regularly hear soundbites about stock market
one reason why I’ve long advocated a diversified asset allocation strategy in types of asset, geography and investment methodology. This would be true at any time, but especially now given the eco-
for inflation, then deeper drawdowns can be more painful as it took around 6 years in real terms to recover from the GFC; although it took around 14 years in inflation-adjusted terms to move back sustainably above its 1999 highs.

a great deal of comfort. Investors tend to focus, rightly, on the scale of capital loss and how long it takes to recover. While risk tolerance differs for every investor, we believe that all investors can optimize expected return at their given level of risk through diversification. In other words, rather than following the herd in investing in a hot asset, it’s better to keep your eggs in several baskets. Following the herd, though, is human nature so investors need to keep reminding themselves to avoid it. All this means looking to invest in emerging markets, currencies (there’s always a winner on one side of the money market), bonds, commodities, gold, ETFs etc. There are lots of possibilities out there, and the key is to ensure there is the appropriate level of correlation across the individual components of any portfolio so that the aggregated outcome is always within the range of expectations. It’s long been a mantra of mine that we can’t dictate what returns a given asset or combination of assets might produce, but we can try to ensure that we understand what the maximum implied level of risk is. For investors in equities, the experiences of the US, UK, Japanese, Hong Kong, Thai and most other markets is that the maxi-
mum possible loss is at least 7595% in extremis. Extremis tends to happen roughly once a lifetime from what we can see. With all this in mind, it seems to me that if you’re a boomer dependent on your retirement savings, and with less than 10 years to retirement, you should probably have less than 30% equity Beta (market risk). Choosing what should go into your portfolio requires a firm idea of what exactly you’re aiming for (in terms of rerun and time period), as well as a sound knowledge of how much exposure each asset has and how risk can be counteracted. An independent fee-based advisor can help as, because they’re not reliant on commission, they look at the whole spectrum of assets, not just one small part of it. However, this isn’t always the case – US equity investors at both the 1929 pre-crash peak and the mid1960s highs had to wait 30 years just to get their money back in real terms (excluding dividends).[4] So if you’re investing to maximize your retirement fund, wealth protection is an important consideration rather than taking on a risk that may (or may not) bring large returns. To reduce risk, diversification is the key: you can’t rely on one dominant investment. By diversification, I don’t just mean in assets, but also in methodology. For this, the broadest approach is the best: i.e. a very broad brush of complimentary risk mitigation strategies, including long/short, market neutral, absolute return, factor investing, alpha generation, beta allocation plays and trend following. In other words, investors need to use all the available tools to create an overall allocation matching their risk level. In such volatile times, they might need to dynamically vary their risk exposure too – you should never exceed your maximum risk exposure but there may be times when it makes sense not to deploy your ‘risk budget’ fully. While there are many models for this, I’ve learned that when assets fall in value, expected returns or historic volatility don’t provide

He’s also trying to write a book but that’s a long story… He is British, hailing from Manchester, England. He’s been living (and working) in Asia for over 17 years and although he’s pretty much integrated into the Asian lifestyle, specifically Thailand and its wonderful people and culture, he’s still very much a Brit. Even though he soon learnt that he had to change his Mancunian accent (or be totally misunderstood) his sarcasm and wit remained, much to the confuddlement of many a Thai. He’s tried ‘most’ things in Thailand, since it’s all part of the magic

of being here, and yet doesn’t really speak that much Thai. Remarkably, his entrance into the world of acting came just over 7 year ago when he was looking to ‘spice up’ his work life. You see, he’d lost his edge and interest in his work! And as a top executive in a huge Swiss company he just couldn’t’ afford to. All the creativity in problem solving and making the ‘pie bigger’ in high level negotiations had slipped. And his lifestyle was absolutely not where it should be; 24/7 work including client and supplier dinners had taken their toll. Stress was building, and so was his emotional state. He looked for answers to get back to ‘being himself’, to relax his anxious mind, to stimulate his creatively and get the ‘spark’ back. He was really struggling and his performance had noticeably dropped. After a couple of months scrabbling around he started getting fit again; maybe this would help. It didn’t! Whilst in a restaurant after a good workout (somehow doesn’t beer and food taste better after exercise) a group of strangers approached him and asked to take a picture with him; seems they thought he was a famous actor. As he liked the attention he acknowledged his status as a Hollywood film star and proceeded to have photos taken. Later that night it hit him. He jumped up with a start from bed as his mind shouted out “That’s it, I’ll take an acting class, that will bring back my work creatively.” He’d always enjoyed dreaming about characters when he was a child and role-playing; and somehow during his whole life, he’s thought every day was part of a performance to which it could be scored. ‘How well did I perform today?’ He enrolled for an acting course (where incidentally he met a group of professional actors who later became close friends) and his work performance improved dramatically. It was the magic pill he needed to wake up his senses. A year later (that is 6 years ago) Ross gets a call completely ‘out of the blue’ from one of the actors who was at the class with Ross a year earlier. He invited Ross to a casting since it seemed the director couldn’t find anyone for a particular role and he thought Ross be perfect for it. Ross accepted and through a long process of casting and script learning and writing he went on to make his first film. And that, in 2013, was his first ‘real’ acting experience. (NOTE: Remarkably, due to fund-
ing holdups and endless post-production reworks to make it as ‘production perfect’ as could be, finally, ‘Soul Transit’ was launched in April 2019 at Beverly Hills Film Festival, Hollywood. It wasn’t until after Ross had already decided to take the opportunity for early retirement from the corporate rat race and spend more time with his mother that he decided to ‘get into acting proper. This was the very beginning of 2017. Revitalized after an extended period of internal soul searching and mind and body development he was ready. He started going to castings and, as with so many things in life, you need someone to give you a break (how can you get experience if no one will give you the experience?!) After a blind casting for a theatre Ross was told he had good base acting skills which could be built upon. Ross urged the director to give him the opportunity at his stage performance. A few workshops later with other actors in the theatre company and a lucky break (as an actor had dropped out of a planned performance) Ross got the chance. His first theatre role was in Death Trap as a Lawyer. The director, and the audience, liked his performance and how he made the role ‘sparkle.’ A month later he was offered to cast for another role for an adaptation of 12 Angry Men. Ross jumped at the opportunity which really set him on his way. He went on to win Best Actor award 2018 for his performance as Juror 3#. And that set him on his way to rapid ascent to be professional actor. In just a few years of ‘immersion’ into the world of acting Ross is now recognized for his acting abilities. He believes totally in the ‘power of the mind’ to make things happen. He holds close to heart a key proverb from his father: “If you think you can do something, say you can, then go ahead and prove you can.” Many times Ross has used this as his mantra. Along with the poem by Walter D. Wintle ‘It’s All in the State of Mind’ from the poem. Notes: Ross is onstage as Josef K. during November, in a collage of Kafka works as part of the Celebration of Performance and Literature sponsored by Embassies from around the world. Ross can be seen in ‘The Cave’, which is launched worldwide; in Thailand Cinema’s 21st November 2019. Links: IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/ name/nm7210361/

BENNY HILL TO BANGKOK By a very British Nomad. Apart from talking about my life, my book, I would also like to cover working after 70, and Why don’t you try to write your own autobiography? I can remember as if it was yesterday…. there I am at the age of fifteen years old, sitting in a box at the Strand Theatre in the West End, on the first night, trying to fathom out exactly what Ideal Husband by George Bernard Shaw was all about. Big stars at the time including Richard Todd and Margaret Courtney made it one of father’s big hits. However, I still have no idea what it was really all about!!! That was just one of my early recollections of growing up in a theatrical family….my Dad, also known to all as Peter Bridge, was a successful Impresario or what they now call a Theatre Producer. And in those days, glittery first nights were our life back in the 60’s! In fact, I grew up surrounded with the sons of stars as best friends, which I thought was the norm. Jack Hawkins, Richard Attenborough and Donald Sinden’s sons were all my best mates. Fast forward to 2019, and at the ripe old age of nearly 70 here I am in Bangkok, having produced a massive music concert, with 45 musicians and superstars from the West End. And I am now called Mike Bridge, the Producer too!!! Funny how life moves us along, and perhaps it is my dear Dad up there where ever, cheering me on
or in his case more likely trying to send me copious notes!! I owe a lot to my father and mother. They gave us a stable home, educated me in prep and public schools, (or Great Aunt Ethel’s estate helped!!) pushed me at an early age into work, and gave me the nerve and balls to run several successful businesses along the way. I was born in 1949, just after the war, and have lived through the swinging sixties in London, worked in the theatre, was an assistant to a famous photographer, a floor manager in TV, a manager for a famous guitar designer, a photographer’s agent, and then went on to run a successful fashion business with my younger brother…. all before I was 28 years old. This was before I entered the world of exhibitions, running London’s Fashion Week and property shows all over the world. Then journalism grabbed me, first presenting and producing my own radio show in Dubai and then entering the world of sport, as editor of two golf magazines in Thailand. Now come full circle, and I am back working in TV and running concerts in Thailand, which I can now call home. So why I hear you ask did you call your autobiography Benny Hill to Bangkok? Well very early on in my career, I was lucky enough to get a job at Thames TV in Teddington, as an assistant floor manager. And one of the many series I worked on there was the Benny Hill Show. Now I am running concerts here in Bangkok. There’s the quick answer, but do please indulge me, and join me on my own incredible ride along the tracks of my life from 1949 to today. I met some incredibly famous people, went to some historic events and ended up being an Expat nomad. December 27th – Merry Christmas to all and see you after the New Year! NEWS.. BUNKER BOYS Monday, November 18th Bangpra 1st John Hughes (21) 37 points 2nd Tony Robbins (22) 35 points 3rd Gerry Cooney (17) 35 points 4th Pat Ryan (12) 34 points Near pins Keith Norman, Pat Ryan, & Jimmy Carr X 2. Nineteen golfers were on hand for today’s game at Bangpra. The course was in good order but the greens were back to their treacherously fast condition of a few years ago. Anybody putting down the slope had a real job on their hands and if the put didn’t go down then it was much further away coming back. To compound the problem the greenkeeper must have had a bad night as some of the pin placements were wicked. The wind was also up just to add a bit more to the challenge. John Hughes of the ( I win when I want to) fame did just that today with a solid round of thirty-seven, very good in the conditions. Having missed a couple of opportunities, Tony Robbins still did enough to take second place on countback from Gerry Cooney whilst Pat Ryan brought up the rear with thirty-four, low by his standards. Near pins went to Keith Norman, Pat Ryan and two to Jimmy Carr. Tuesday, November 19th Kabin Buri Day 1 1st Keith Norman (13) 39 points 2nd Keith Smithson (4) 34 points
3rd Jimmy Carr (17) 32 points 4th Greg Berry (12) 31 points Near pins Alan Sullivan, Keith Smithson, Keith Norman, Mashi Kaneta. Sixteen Bunker Boys made the trip up hwy 331 to one of our favourite away destinations staying at the beautiful Serenity Hotel and Spa and playing two rounds of golf at a quality course. As there was a major event being staged at the course on Thursday it was in competition-ready status and just about as good as it could be. One could argue the course was overwatered as there was no run and the occasional mudball. The wind was also blowing sometimes strongly to add an extra dimension to what is already a very challenging course. Many drove up in the morning and the round was completed in time to catch happy hour back at the hotel. Keith Norman played out of his skin to claim first place with a magnificent thirty-nine points, five ahead of second-placed Keith Smithson on thirty-four. Jimmy Carr took third with thirty-two and Greg Berry rounded out the winner’s list with thirty-one. Near pins went to Mashi Kaneta, Jimmy Carr, and the two Keiths, Smithson & Norman. Wednesday, November 20th Kabin Buri Day 2 Individual placings 1st Keith Smithson (4) 35 points 2nd Michael Brett (16) 34 points
3rd Tony Robbins (22) 33 points Team placings 1st Keith Smithson & Mashi Kaneta 39 points 2nd Jimmy Carr & Brendan Harnett 38 points Near pins Geoff Parker, Keith Smithson & Jimmy Carr X 2. Day two saw us play both individual Stableford and two-ball better ball, with eight teams of two. The course was just as it was yesterday but with a bit less wind, nevertheless, nobody was able to replicate the heroics of Keith Norman on day one. Keith Smithson moved up one place to take first with thirty-five points. Michael Brett took second a stroke back with Tony Robbins bringing up the rear a further point back. Near pins to Geoff Parker, Keith Smithson and two to Jimmy Carr. Geoff Parker came close to an ace hitting the pin and rolling away, had he been successful it would have completely changed the first and second team placings. Crystal Bay A & C 1st Gary Smith (13) 37 points 2nd Pat Ryan (12) 37 points 3rd Paul Smith (3) 35 points Near pins Kob Glover, Paul Smith, and Daryl Vernon X 2 With sixteen away in Kabin Buri there were still thirteen left for a game Crystal Bay. Mixed reports about the course with some loving it and a lone dissenting voice saying they would not play it again, as the old adage goes “ you can’t please all the people all the time”. If there was agreement on anything it was that the greens were slow and inconsistent, most welcomed the reopening of the A nine judged to be the best of the three. There was a worry about the watering system was not working correctly and if not repaired then the course condition will deteriorate quickly. A close game with some good scores saw Gary Smith take first place from Pat Ryan on countback both with thirty-seven points. Paul

LINKS GOLF SOCIETY Ian Mollard Memorial Day On Friday November 22nd, 2019 Ian Mollard loved coming to Pattaya and playing golf at Links. Back home in the UK he contracted Leukemia and sadly passed away a couple of months ago. He gave his great mate, Pat Lavin, some money and requested he bring it to Links and that it be spent on giving the players a big and happy day of golf. Thanks to Ian’ generosity, we were able to increase the size and number of prizes. Forty one players came out to Green Valley for this day and vied for four placings in two flights plus double the number of near pins and one long putt, along with the usual best nines. Kevin McEntee was passenger in Derek’s car which became lost en route only to arrive well after everyone had teed off. However, his great power of concentration, no panic, and plenty of golf talent saw him score 42 points to win the “A” flight. Wayne Peppernell had one of his better days and made 37 points for second spot. Then Phil Davies scored 36 points and had a better back nine to win a countback for third over Ciaran Smyth. The scoring in “B” flight was just crazy. With a sky high score of 45 points it was first placing to Dave Orbinski, and the Green Jacket, just before heading home to Aust. Niall Caven played in the same group and it must have rubbed off as he took second place with 43
points on countback over the third member of that three-ball, Brian Bissett. Ron Matthews wasn’t in that group but scored 37 points to grab fourth. Near Pins “A” flight: Colin Service, Marco Beer, Peter Coyne Near Pins “B” flight: Mike Firkin, Niall Caven, Frank Riley, Paul Stewart Long Putt: Phil Davies “A” Flight (+3-16) 1st Place–Kevin McEntee (8)-42 pts 2nd Place –Wayne Peppernell (15) -37 pts 3rd Place – Phil Davies (13) – 36 pts c/back 4th Place-Ciaran Smyth(13)–36 pts “B” Flight (17 +) 1st Place – Dave Orbinski (20) – 45 pts 2nd Place – Niall Caven (25) - 43 pts c/back 3rd Place–Brian Bissett (25)-43 pts 4th Place-Ron Matthews (17)-37pts Best Front Nine ( non winners)… Paul Smith….20 pts Best Back Nine (non winners)….. Pat Lavin ...20 pts After arriving back to Links, Phil conducted the presentation of prizes as usual, but then more
surprises. All cards were shuffled and lucky draws took place with prizes ranging from sleeves of Titleist ProV1 and ProV1x golf balls, a new Chee Chan golf bag, won by Mike Firkin, and a New Callaway Rouge Driver, won by Dave Arataki. Many happy winners there. Then the trays of seafood salad and potato salad arrived to compliment the 2 pigs-on-a-spit, followed by music from a talented local duo and, just for good measure, a couple of numbers from Phil Davies (a la Tom Jones) and David Wilkinson.(a la Frank Sinatra) A great day and night for all, which we feel sure fulfilled Ian’s wish. R.I.P. Ian Mollard. Pattaya Links Golf Society is a PSC affiliated, friendly group and welcomes golfers of all levels. We play Monday ,Wednesday and Friday.” Links” Bar is towards the Southern end of Soi Buakhow. Check the Big board out front for upcoming games schedule. Sign up at Links Bar or online to join us for a fun day of competition golf.
Smith took third with thirty-five. Kob Glover once again got in the near pins, Paul Smith took one and the organiser Daryl Vernon got two. Friday, November 22nd Eastern Star 1st Keith Smithson (4) 38 points 2nd Niall Glover (19) 37 points 3rd Tony Robbins (22) 36 points Near pins Kob Glover, Keith Norman, & Michael Brett. With a total of twenty-nine playing on Wednesday, we were back to sixteen today, could be many
don’t like the Eastern Star course or possibly four games in a week is too much for some. Difficult as always the course was in nice condition and a nice breeze kept playing conditions comfortable. The pace of play was acceptable with the game completed in about four hours. With some booming drives and accurate iron play, Keith Smithson completed a week that contains two wins and a second-place, today once again at the head of the pack with thirty-eight points. Niall
Glover had a very solid thirtyseven in second place with Tony Robbins rounding out the winner’s list with thirty-six, also having a good week.Near pins went to Kob Glover who is fast becoming a dab hand at this aspect of the game, Keith Norman, and Michael Brett. Keith Norman 1st day winner at Kabin Buri. Winning pair Mashi Kaneta and Keith Smithson.

GROWLING SWAN Played out of “BOGEY’S BAR & GRILL.” STABLEFORD. EASTERN STAR G.C. 21st of November, 2019. Denis Steele Gets Home By A Point In A Close Finish! It was eight golfers that decided to have a crack at Eastern Star! Not a long report as there is not that much to report. Course was in good shape and with vouchers it wasn’t priced too bad, and of course the place was empty of punters! Weather was good to us so all in all it was set for a good days golf. Eight golfers afforded us to play one division or one flight with all novelties up for grabs. Well Denis Steele had his game on and took all in front, although it was a tight finish with the solitary shot separating 1st to 3rd. Denis ended the day with 38 points one
in front of second and third who were to be separated by the countback. Winning the countback and getting second spot was Bill “Shooter” McGarvie. Third home was a newcomer Gary Bingham. WINNERS from EASTERN STAR GC. 1st Denis Steele (18) 38 pts. 2nd Bill McGarvie (12) 37 pts. 3rd Gary Bingham (20) 37 pts. NEAR THE PIN. 3. Bill McGarvie. 6. Denis Steele. 13. Denis Steele. 17. Bill McGarvie. LONG FIRST PUTT. 9. Gary Bingham. 18. Glenn Smith. In the photo we do not have today’s winner (as he did not venture back) so we have a group of our regulars. Back at Bogey’s we welcomed Gary Bingham but sadly we bid farewell to two golfers leaving us,
Gary Bingham & Bill Shooter McGarvie. Well guys you will be sadly missed, let’s wish you safe travels and hope that we see you again soon! D-For was set free by Alex and the punters and players at Bogeys Bar and Grill were generous as always with their contributions towards the needy in Pattaya. All are thanked for this. For serious golfing with a dash of fun, the Growling Swan welcomes golfers of all persuasions, be it young or old, male or female. We generally play on Mondays and Thursdays at any one of the fine courses around Pattaya. Please contact Peter Grey for bookings or any information on 086 1503 086. “BOGEY’S HOLE IN ONE BONUS IS AT B6500 THIS MONTH!” “GOT TO BE IN IT TO WIN IT!” PRH Grey.
CAFE KRONGORG On arrival at Greenwood it appeared that we had one more golfer than we had sets of clubs. Peter Bygballe, after helping others load their clubs on to the bus, forgot to load his own. After a double check and a few scratched heads he headed off to the pro
shop to hire a replacement set. Peter has been on form lately so it was thought that the others may have a chance, given he was playing with unfamiliar clubs. The B & C nines at Greenwood had little defence against Peter and his hire clubs, he shot a great 40 points winning by two shots from Ronnie
Ratte. 1st Peter Bygballe (18) 40 pts 2nd Ronnie Ratte (22) 38 pts 3rd Ulf Larsson (15) 36 pts 4th Steen Habersaat (27) 34 pts (18 B/9) 5th Jan Lovgreen (26) 34 pts (17 B/9)

It was a Belgian expat who many years ago asked Father Ray Brennan a simple question, what could he do to help Father Ray’s work here in Pattaya, and the reply was also simple, ‘go and get rice for my children.’ This is how the annual SOS Rice Appeal started and each year the people of Pattaya are asked to
help feed the children and students at the Father Ray Foundation. Today the Foundation cares for almost 200 children whose own families cannot take care of them, children who are victims of abuse and neglect, orphans and those who were living in poverty. There is also the school for blind

THE FUTURE OF ENTERTAINMENT The end of December heralds a new decade and the wonderment of what 2020 will bring us to make our lives even happier. Futurists spend just as much time
looking back as they do forward. 20 years ago we were surrounded by early smartphones, Tamagotchi virtual pets, Palm Pilots and MiniDisc players. MySpace and Napster both went live, and they signaled a radical change in distribution. What happened when people would share movies, songs, games and news content with their peers rather than buying from a store? Google and Yahoo! had just launched and were freely available to everyone from their inception – without needing to download software. News organizations were headed into a downward slump. How would the internet and early smartphones impact the business of news? Twenty years later, social networks have permanently shifted the distribution of content. How will we now convince Gen Z, Millennials and Gen X to pay for content? Will streaming platforms survive all of these new planned subscription models? Or will this lead to even more consolidation? We don’t know when 5G will roll out everywhere, and we’re questioning the business cases and infrastructure models for 5G. We’re always at the beginning of
an evolution. Synthetic media offers new opportunities and challenges. Japanese pop star Hatsune Miku, American influencer Lil Miquela and Chinese news anchor Xin Xiaomeng are synthetic media. They were generated using large databases and specially-trained algorithms, and they represent a new world of synthesized content. Synthetic media can be modulated and responsive to our tastes and preferences. But we don’t have ethical guidelines on how to use synthetic media.
There is no obligation to inform consumers that something (a person, pet, place or object) has been algorithmically generated. Authenticating content is becoming more difficult. Deepfakes — videos created using AI that can make it look like someone said or did something they have never
done — are spreading faster than anyone anticipated. The problem is that faked videos are only the beginning. While we’re fixated on deepfake videos, especially ahead of the 2020 US elections, there are many more “deep [x]” applications casting an ominous shadow on the horizon. Research-

every entertainment, media and technology company, and as a result, there will be a new emphasis on voice search optimization (VSO). Consumers who want to get news, listen to music, play games and watch their favorite
streaming services from Walt Disney, Comcast NBCUniversal and AT&T’s WarnerMedia divi-
are under investigation. Germany’s domestic anti-trust authority is investigating big tech companies, while France and Great Britain are pushing for a digital tax. Platform regulation and taxation will impact the distribution of content, and there are likely to be reverberating impacts on how every organization collects and uses consumer data. We’ve entered the post-fixed screen era. By the summer of 2019, Apple disclosed a slump in iPhone revenue – it was down 12% year over year. Samsung reported the same. Part of the

shows and movies are going to have to pay a la carte, which means spending way more for content (unlikely) or prioritizing for a budget. They’ll have a lot to choose from: PlayStation Now, Spotify, Netflix, Audible, CBS All Access, Google Stadia, Jump, Shadow, Amazon.com, Hulu, Apple, Playkey and the upcoming
reason is price: consumers just aren’t willing to drop $1,000 or more on a mobile phone. However there are other forces in play: smart wearables, smart speakers, and home automation devices. In the next few years, consumers won’t rely on the single, fixed screens of their mobile devices, but will instead transition to a diverse, multi-interface ecosystem. In developed markets, half of the interactions consumers have with computers will be using voice by the end of 2020. This isn’t just about talking to a smart speaker. Voice interfaces are now everywhere, from smart speakers to home appliances to kiosks. Consumers should expect to talk more often than they type. This impacts

FRANKIE’S INN - ITALIAN GOURMET FOOD
Frankie’s is located on Jomtien’s 2nd road. While reviewing the menu in preparation for dinner, I couldn’t help but notice a brightly colored, but separate breakfast menu. I took a look and was pleasantly surprised by the extensive smoothie offerings, “super bowls” fruit and yogurt bowls as well as the normal English breakfast and omelets. VERY reasonably priced. They open at 8 am, I shall return. Upon reviewing the menu it becomes clear this is not a common Italian restaurant. The pizza offerings are built around crusts with 3 different flours. They offer both traditional and gourmet types cooked a variety of ways. So as appetizers we ordered both a Margherita pizza as well as a gourmet spinach and salmon on the recommendation of our waiter. I will say I was stunned by how good the salmon and spinach pizza was on a thick pan crust. So now we are always trying to include unique and different veg-
on a bed of grilled vegetable with a light cream sauce. Again, we were not disappointed, the salmon was lightly seared and very fresh. For meat dishes we ordered an Australian steak with grilled vegetables, and their Osso Buco served with braised vegetables on a saffron risotto. While the steak was excellent the Osso Buco was amazing. Maybe the best I have ever had. I want to note, since we are sharing, the dishes get covered with a variety of sauces. Like many fine restaurants they were quick to change out our plates. BUT, whenever a restaurant does this
etarian offerings, and tonight was no exception. We first ordered both a spinach and ricotta ravioli with mushrooms and flavored with pumpkin sauce. Shockingly good, promptly devoured by our meat eaters as well. This led us to the 4 cheese gnocchi, thankfully the waiter suggested a double serving as it is very tasty. So even though there were no bright colors for photos we went ahead. So delicious the double serving was promptly consumed as well. We spoke to the cook about the quality of the ingredients and he was proud of his efforts on a daily basis to seek out quality ingredients. It showed. Moving on we ordered a salmon
it leaves no place for your cutlery to sit until a new plate is placed. Frankie’s changed out our cutlery at the s same time. A very nice touch! As you can imagine by this time dessert was mandatory. We discussed the fact that not trying Tiramisu might be illegal in Italy, so that was combined with an order of Pannacotta. Each was enough to be shared 4 ways. I should point out the dinner menu also offers an extensive offering of Thai dishes as well. Absolutely fantastic food, somewhere between pleasant comfort food and true gourmet. Highly recommended.
