SPORTSMAN PUB

Located on Soi 13 between Beach road and 2nd road, we got to visit Sportsman Pub for an update. Sportsman is an iconic restaurant in Pattaya as it first opened in 1997 and continues to grow and evolve with Pattaya. Sportsman is very highly rated on Trip advisor and probably best known for its Sunday Roasts. We visited on a Friday night when its’ highly valued Pizza and Pasta bar was offered. The full menu was available as well but the buffet provided an easy way to

satisfy our vegan needs. They even produced vegan pizzas! So I started with the Friday fish and chips which is highly regarded in Pattaya. Made with real Norwegian Cod, it was excellent. I think they offer more types of potato options than you can imagine. Chips, fries, roasted, mashed, baked and on and on. Perfectly battered with a delicious tartar sauce it did not disappoint. For a Thai dish we chose Tom Yum Kung. Our Thai expert said

it was the best she ever had passing up her normal favorite place. It was a large serving with rice and made a complete meal. Sportsman serving sizes

night they also offer 2 for 1 cocktails of which there are 8 different choices. It was comfortably busy when we were there. Since Sportsman is also the pro-

are always very satisfying. Choosing only vegan items from the Pizza and Pasta buffet yielded a wide variety of tastes to sample. There is a small salad bar included as well. At just 249 baht it is one of the better value options in Pattaya. Om Friday

ducer of highly regarded Bowman pies we chose a steak pie. It arrived with a large bowl of gravy as well as fries and a large portion of assorted veggies. Easy to see why Bowman pies are available all around town. Unfortunately it was not possible

to try many of the newest offerings. Both the Indonesian beef dish and a new “pizza toastie” looked like I need to revisit. I took home a serving of Pea and Ham soup knowing it would make a great breakfast for me. Lastly, it was time for dessert and the Sportsman did not disappoint. We chose an Apple Crumble with custard, a Cherry pie with vanilla ice cream, and a vanilla sponge cake with strawberry sauce and vanilla ice cream. I was pleasantly surprised how well custard complemented the Apple Crumble. A very pleasant and comfortable evening was had by all. By Nick Athens

NEW YEAR HEALTH

Local wisdom holds a highly respected place in communities of all sizes throughout Thailand, employing knowledge and traditions

that are faithfully passed on from generation to generation. It’s applied in various areas of everyday life, including health

and wellness. Particular locations or attractions are often renowned for a certain expertise or wisdom; such as, the follow-

ing in each of the kingdom’s five regions. Central Region – Abhaibhubejhr Day Spa and Museum in Prachin Buri Prachin Buri province is known for its herbal plants and traditional Thai medicines, and is often referred to as Thailand’s herbal city. A lot about medical local wisdom can be learned here and an interesting place to start is the Abhaibhubejhr Thai Herbal Medicine Museum which – much as its name suggests – is dedicated to preserving and showcasing traditional Thai medicine knowledge. The Northeast – Buddhist Meditation Retreats Those interested in doing a Buddhist meditation retreat may choose to do so at a temple in Northeast Thailand. Many of the monasteries in the Northeast fall under the Thai forest tradition,

in which monastics aim to live as closely to how the Buddha lived as possible. Hallmarks of this tradition include living in the forest, using the human body as a meditation subject and maintaining mindfulness in all activities. The South – Ranong Hot Springs Ranong’s hot springs have long

been reputed for their medicinal properties and this, together with their rustic outdoor appeal, see them continue to draw both foreign and Thai visitors. The springs, of which the closest are a convenient 2 kilometres from Ranong town in Raksawarin Park, are probably the most popular attraction in the surrounding area.

Launched at an official sideevent of the One Planet Sustainable Tourism Programme during the UN Climate Summit, COP25 in Madrid, the “Transport Related CO2 Emissions of the Tourism Sector” presents the emissions produced by the different modes of tourism transport. As the number of both international and domestic tourists continues to rise, this data is presented alongside the predicted growth in emissions to 2030 and is set against the so called ‘current ambition´ for the decarbonization of transport. Presenting the report, UNWTO Executive Director Manuel Butler said: “This comprehensive study analyses the environmental impact of the different modes of transport within the tourism sector. It is now for the tourism sector, especially tourism policy makers to use data effectively and ensure the sector plays a leading role in addressing the climate emergency.” Ovais Sarmad, the Deputy Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) addressed the need to scale efforts towards the implementation of the Paris Agreement: “While tourism is mentioned in many Nationally Determined Contributions as a big concern, not enough has yet been done. Industry must do more, but governments must align their policies, so that at the international level we can collectively work to increase ambition. The One Planet Sustainable Tourism Programme is a vital ongoing mechanism to promote sustain-

able tourism around the world.” Some of the main conclusions of the research include: - Against the current ambition scenario, transport-related CO2 emissions from tourism are predicted to increase from 1,597 million tonnes to 1,998 million tonnes between 2016 and 2030, representing a 25% rise. - During the same period, international and domestic arrivals are expected to increase from 20 billion to 37 billion, mainly driven by domestic tourism (from 18.8 billion to 35.6 billion), followed by international arrivals (1.2 billion to 1.8 billion). - Transport-related emissions from tourism represented 5% of all man-made emissions in 2016 and will increase to 5.3% by 2030. - Tourism related transport emissions represented 22% of all transport emissions in 2016 and will continue doing so in 2030 (21%). Moving to a “high ambition scenario” Tourism’s transport-related CO2 emissions remain a major challenge and require tourism to work closely with transport in order to support its commitment to accelerate the decarbonazition process and the implementation of a high ambition scenario. In addition, the tourism sector must determine its own high ambition scenario, complementing the efforts of the transport sector. Here, tourism would advance towards significantly decoupling growth from emissions in order to grow within the international climate targets.

TOURISM’S CO2 EMISSION Madrid, Spain, 4 December 2019 – Transport-related emissions from tourism are expected to account for 5.3% of all manmade CO2 emissions by 2030, up from 5% in 2016, a landmark new report from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the International Transport Forum (ITF) shows. At the same time, as tourist numbers rise and the sector makes progress in achieving low-carbon travel, emissions per passenger kilometer are expected to decline over the coming decade. Against this backdrop, UNWTO calls for enhanced cooperation between the transport and tourism sectors to effectively transform tourism for climate action.

LOCAL LICENSES In this week’s article I would like to talk about licenses here in Thailand. Like any other country there are many licenses that are issued for multiple uses and purposes. From a driving license to work permits to liquor licenses, there are certain rules and regulations concerning each license that may be difficult to obtain as much of the information is in Thai language only. One such license such as a liquor license may extend to not just the selling of alcoholic products but to their importation and supplying, depending on the license type one may be able to sell alcohol to the public but is not able to import it into the Kingdom. The governing body that collects the taxes from alcohol is the Excise Department located in the Ministry of Finance, they are also

process to go through as Thailand has a huge demand to satisfy its hospitality industry as well as its local restaurants, pubs and clubs. After obtaining the license the owner will then be able to sell alcohol during the allotted times 11am to 2pm and 5pm to 12am. Also license holders are prohibited to sell alcohol to people under the age of 20 and selling next to educational institutes such as schools and universities. If in the case that importing alcohol is needed then a whole other license on top of the liquor license, this process is noticeably more complicated but not unobtainable in any way. Though if the imported alcohol is for personal consumption then it can be as simple as the initial liquor license. The permit that enables you to import and then trade the alco-

go through this process as alcohol is big business here in Thailand with a marketed increase in wine sales which make up almost twenty percent of all alcohol imported into the country. Though the market is good it doesn’t mean that it is cheap to import liquor, the tax on imported liquor is usually broken down as follows: ·Customs import duty fee. ·Excise tax which can has a ceiling of 60% depending on what country the alcohol was imported from, this can be as low as 5% or even be eliminated by importing from countries under the FTA (free trade agreement) or the AFTA or (ASEAN free trade agreement). ·Municipal tax of 10% of the Excise tax. ·Value added tax or VAT of 7%.

DR.KAMALJIT SINGH HEALTH TIPS:TOP CAUSES OF MEMORY LOSS Forget your keys? That might be absentmindedness. Forget what you did morning? That might be a more serious memory problem. See what can cause memory loss and what you cabn do about it-Dr.Kamaljit Singh.

Lack of Sleep: -First, it’s harder to recall things when you haven’t slept. Second, sleep strengthens the bonds between brain cells that help you remember for the long term. Third, it’s harder to form memories in the first place when your mind is wandering because of a lack of sleep. Good “sleep hygiene” can help: Shoot for 8 hours a night, exercise daily, stick to a regular sleep schedule, and avoid alcohol and caffeine late in the day. Medication: -Drugs that sedate you, like sleep aids and tranquilizers, can weaken your memory, as you might imagine. But so can less obvious culprits, like blood pressure meds, antihistamines, and antidepressants. Plus, you may react differently than someone else to the same pill or combination of pills. Tell your doctor about any memory issues when you start a new medication. They may be able to adjust the dose or prescribe an alternative. Diabetes: -People with the disease are more likely to develop memory problems including dementia. It may be that high blood sugar damages tiny blood vessels called capillaries in the brain. Or it may be that high insulin damages brain cells. Scientists continue to study the issue. You might be able to slow this memory decline if you try to prevent or at least control your diabetes with medicine, exercise, and a healthy diet. Genes: -Genes — traits you got from your parents — help determine when and if your memory starts to fade and whether you get dementia. But it’s not simple. Genetics seem to matter more in some types of dementia than others, and a gene that affects memory in one person might have no effect in another. A genetic test from your doctor might have some useful information. Age: -Memory tends to get worse as you get older. Doctors call it dementia when it starts to interfere with daily life. The number of people with Alzheimer’s, the most common form of de-

mentia, doubles every 5 years after age 65. Your genes play a part in why this happens, but so do things like diet, exercise, social life, and illness like diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Stroke: -A stroke stops the flow of blood to part of your brain. Afterward, damaged brain tissue can make it hard to think, speak, remember, or pay attention. It’s called vascular dementia. This can also happen with a series of small strokes over time. Things that raise your risk of stroke like high blood pressure, heart disease, and smoking may also cause this type of dementia. If you think you’re having a stroke, remember FAST: Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech problems. Smoking: -Smoking seems to shrink parts of your brain that help you think and remember things. It also raises your risk of dementia, possibly because it’s bad for your blood vessels. And it definitely raises your risk of stroke, which can damage the brain and cause vascular dementia. Talk to your doctor or a mental health professional if you smoke and want to quit. Heart Disease: -Plaque builds up in your arteries and slows blood flow to your brain and other organs. This is called atherosclerosis. It can make it harder to think clearly and remember things. It also could lead to a heart attack or stroke, which both also raise your chances of dementia. And even if you don’t yet have heart disease, possible causes — smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure — make dementia more likely

have a higher risk for dementia later in life. And extra pounds anytime make heart disease more likely, which also sometimes leads to brain decline and memory problems. You can calculate BMI online with your height and weight. Talk to your doctor about the right weight for you. You may be able to improve yours with a healthy diet and regular exercise. Lack of Exercise: -Regular exercise lessens the risk of brain decline, memory problems, and dementia. It also seems to improve brain function in those who already have dementia. You don’t have to go out and run a marathon or take up pole vaulting. Just get out and garden, walk, swim, or even dance for 30 minutes on most days of the week. Bad Diet:-Unhealthy eating can lead to heart disease, which can cause brain issues including memory problems and dementia. That’s why the heart-healthy Mediterranean-style diet is good for your brain, too. It stresses whole grains, fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, olive oil, and other healthy fats like avocado, and keeps the red meat to a minimum. High Blood Pressure: -Also called hypertension, it raises your risk of memory problems, including dementia, most likely because it damages the tiny blood vessels in your brain. It also can lead to other conditions like stroke that cause dementia. People who control their blood pressure with diet, exercise, and medication seem to be able to slow or prevent this brain decline. Depression and Anxiety:-It’s often harder to concentrate or recall things if you’re anxious or depressed. Plus, you’re also more likely to develop dementia, though scientists don’t yet know exactly why that happens. Talk to your doctor or therapist if anxiety or depression interfere with your enjoyment of normal daily life or you think of harming yourself. Therapy and medication can help. Obesity: -If your body mass index (BMI) is over 30 in middle age, you

BANKS: CULTURE IS NEEDED... AND QUICKLY Banks need to change the way they advise and work.

Last month Singapore’s financial services regulator, the MAS, fined UBS SGD 11.22 million (THB 249.56 million, USD 8.27 million) for deceptive trade made by its client advisors. The trades involved three types of rule breach regarding overthe-counter bonds and structured products in Singapore accounts from 2014 onwards. According to the MAS, UBS advisors “engaged in acts that deceived or were likely to deceive clients about the spreads and/or interbank prices.” What that boiled down to was that some advisors didn’t stick to the spread or interbank trade price to which clients had signed up. Others only partially disclosed, or not at all, interbank prices changes that would’ve been favourable to clients. If that wasn’t bad enough, some UBS advisors charged clients higher fees than were set out in the lender’s disclosure brochures. This is not an isolated case. In June 2018, Wells Fargo paid out US$ 5.1 million to settle a US regulator’s claims that, over a four-year period, it had that employees persuaded clients to sell their structured products before maturity, generating large fees for the lender. Two years prior to that, US regulator FINRA fined Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith, Inc. $5 million for failing to accurately disclose a 1.5%/ quarter execution cost. Regular readers will be very aware that I’ve long disliked the majority of structured products. Many of these purport to solve the

eternal investment dilemma of the perceived choice between risk and reward. Many structured products give the appearance of resolving this dilemma by giving investors protection (often through with fixed-term assets or securities) but still allowing the potential to make returns in markets (often through the use of options, futures and other derivatives, linked to market indexes or specific assets) by providing exposure to capital appreciation. In principle what’s not to like? In practice – a great deal. For one thing, structured products are, for the large part created by the institutions who sell them, based on underlying assets selected by those same institutions. Unlike other portfolio allocation decisions, where investors make a conscious decision what risks and opportunities to invest into, in this case, the investor is almost a prisoner of whatever structures are being offered at a given time – which tends to be based on the level of risk that financial institutions generally are looking to unload. In a sense every experience, as a buyer or investor includes an element of this process – whether buying a second-hand car or an investment property – the salesman will generally ‘nudge’ you towards the actions that best suit him rather than you. However, this is particularly insidious in the case of structured products, especially in the context of what seems to be a culture of bank opaqueness, where investors, with a potential information asymmetry on a new, arcane product, are particularly vulnerable to any insufficiently ex-

plained, or misrepresented, breakdown of what risks and also what hidden fees are lurking in there. Whilst this looks good on paper, the reality is often that structured funds tend to disguise the complex derivatives or insurance products element to them, often by misrepresenting themselves in terms more akin to deposit-style fixed returns.

It’d be wrong to pin this culture down to just structured products however. In early December, a UK financial sector standards body (the FMSB) showed there were potential conflicts of interest for banks active in bond markets. Investment banks buy bonds di-

rectly from governments or supranational agencies, then sell them to investors, thus creating a secondary debt market. Banks are permitted to act as both primary and secondary dealers in bonds. This means that they could use their knowledge of orders from asset managers to make money on the secondary market. If that sounds familiar, it’s because it’s similar situation to the sub-prime market – a major trigger of the global financial crisis.

The FMSB is right to be concerned. In 2014 a Credit Suisse broker was banned by the UK regulator for allegedly manipulating the price of government bonds during the Bank of England’s QE programme. The FMSB isn’t a regulator, though. It doesn’t have any teeth and can only make suggestions to lessen the likelihood of banks taking advantage of this conflict of interest. Herein lies the problem. The regulations put in place after the Wall Street Crash – the 1933 GlassSteagall Act – separated retail banking from the investment side. By the turn of the millennium, the law was out of date; yet, instead of adapting it to mod-

ern banking, it had been gradually stripped away over several years. It is arguable as to whether relaxed regulation played a significant role in causing the GFC, but it certainly didn’t ease the crisis. In the aftermath of the GFC, tighter laws were enacted. But it seems to be a game of cat-andmouse, as banks create more sophisticated products to circumnavigate regulations. If we carry on like this, investors will justifi-

ably cease to have any confidence in the financial sector.

In my view, restoration of confidence in the modern banking system begins with transparency and thus clear explanation of exactly what goes into a portfolio and it’s becoming clearer each day that this is best achieved by using a fee-model that identifies and limits the conflict of interest inherent in many structured products. Fee-based advisors aren’t infallible… but they are at least independent and that’s probably the next best thing. PEC Meeting Programme – Fridays, 03rd-31st January 2020 January 10, 2020

January 17, 2020

We have Tom Coulter, Operations Head of the Foreign Police Volunteers back with us speaking on:

PEC Welcomes back Professor Andy Andy Barraclough speaking on: Vaccinations and You Here in Thailand. Everyone knows we ought to be vaccinated, but against what? Also what are the considerations for older adults, to be given their health condition and lifestyle. Thus, the question arises, ‘what vaccines should an Expat living in Thailand have?’ Professor Andy’s remarks are not intended as medical advice, was obtained from various public sources, and was his own opinion based on those sources.

What are the Foreign Police Volunteers? How Do They Operate, and How Can You Join? Tom is one of the most compelling guest speakers at PEC to update us on law enforcement with practical insights into how both the police and foreign police volunteers work. Tom Coulter had a distinguished career in the British army in the Ulster Defence Regiment and in the p o l i c e , Royal Ulster Constabulary. He also worked 20 years as a private detective in Northern Ireland. His field of expertise before coming to Thailand 15 years ago was in Anti-terrorism. Tom joined the Foreign Police Volunteers 12 years ago and has held the position of their Operations Manager for 7 years, responsible for a team of 60 police ‘assistants’ as they are now called due to an old Thai law being enforced. Tom will share insights into the FPV and also the various other groups of volunteers and the powers they may, or may not, have. Also, insights and expat misperceptions of Royal Thai Police force - after working with them for over 12 years Tom has a fair understanding of police operations. This is an ideal opportunity for the foreign community to gain knowledge about the practical aspects of police methods assisting and keeping the community safe in Pattaya. After much argument, it was finally agreed we could have the agreed price but could not check in till eleven, not the best start to a round, could another boycott be imminent?. The course was in very poor shape, extremely dry and in need of a real drenching. So much leaf litter was strewn across the course it was difficult to find balls even in the middle of the fairways. The reclusive Les Cobban who must have spent the last few weeks at the driving range returned today and brought his Agame with a score of thirty-eight to take first place on countback from Jimmy Carr who also had his best score for some time. Another tie for third and fourth place with Keith Hemmings edging out John Hughes on thirtythree. Keith also edged out Peter Kelly in the fashion stakes with some very snappy gear. Near pins went to Murray Greig, Robby Watts, Tony Robbins, and Les Cobban. Ken Davidson got the booby prize for the most bunkers found, Ken spent so

&C 1st Peter Botswell (18) 43 points 2nd Ken Davidson (24) 41 points 3rd Jimmy Carr (17) 36 points 4th Neil Jones (22) 35 points Near pins Peter Botswell, Peter Kelly, & Murray Greig. Normally this time of year golf courses are in the best condition we see them after monsoon rain and end of year maintenance, however, this year is very different. So little rain fell during the wet season that courses are now parched dry and water catchments empty. Even good courses like Khao Kheow are suffering and with no prospect of rain anytime soon courses will only deteriorate further making it difficult to justify high season pricing when conditions are so poor. Another hot day today at Khao Kheow where we had to waite about half an hour to tee off due to the late arrival of another society in front of us. Once we got underway the speed of play was good so in the end no big problem. As the course was so dry there was plenty of run on the fairways which made it play short and almost certainly accounted for some of the excellent scoring. Top position went to short-time visitor Peter Botswell who returned an excellent score of forty-three points with borrowed clubs. Ken Davidson finally did get a cut in his handicap of one and may well receive another if he continues to play like today with forty-one points in second place. Jimmy Carr also had a good round in third place on thirty-six points and Neil Jones rounded out the scoring in fourth place with thirty-five points. Near pins went to Murray Greig, Peter Kelly,

and Peter Botswell. A special prize for the longest drive went to Jimmy Carr, unfortunately, it was not on the course but on the way to the course. For some reason, Jimmy went to Treasure Hill instead of Khao Kheow and then had to come all the way back. To make matters worse Jimmy got back on hwy 7 instead of frontage road and couldn’t exit at the Khao Kheow turn off so had to go all the way to Chonburi hwy before he could make a u-turn and come back, one has to wonder if his passengers were sleeping during this excursion. Friday, December 20th Eastern Star 1st Colin Greig (10) 30 points 2nd Neil Jones (22) 29 points 3rd Geoff Cox (17) 28 points Near pins Neil Jones, Keith Norman, & Gary Smith Over recent times the Bunker Boys have enjoyed something of a fractious relationship with the Eastern Star course. Canceled bookings and higher than agreed green fees coupled with an intransigent attitude by course management unwilling to compromise probably was the reason so few turned up for this fixture with ten being the lowest high season attendance anyone can remember. Add in the fact that the course was in very shabby condition and several members dislike the course anyway and you have a recipe for a boycott or at least people not in a good mindset for play. This is another course in desperate need of soaking rain. Most golfers today found the course very difficult which was reflected in the abysmally low scores returned. Colin Greig topped the list with a meager thirty points and was as surprised as anyone that he won. Neil Jones came second with twentynine and Geoff Cox third with twenty-eight. Near pins went to Neil Jones, Keith Norman, and Gary Smith. One player who shall remain nameless had the grand total of four points for his round. Peter Botswell, Colin Greig

LINKS GOLF SOCIETY Pleasant Valley…Mon. Dec.16….S/ford Green for Griffith but Ace for Smith With the days warming up so are the golfers with the Pattaya Links Golf Society, as eight groups visited Pleasant Valley on Monday for a stableford competition in two flights with the cut set at sixteen and under. The busy course was well presented with grassed fairways allowing “run” and greens a little quicker than normal here. The Greenkeeper had obviously had a bad night and he took revenge with some tough pin placings, many on slopes, or at the top of slopes and tucked behind bunkers. Haway man, it’s a Monday! Welcoming back some old friends, the group got away on time and both flights remained competitive in the fresh breeze. In the top flight three golfers shared the honours and countback placed scratch golfer Ritchie Fearby in third on 35 points. Phil Davies took second and compatriot Rana Gurnam took the top place on the podium with 35 points also. In the second flight third place went to Darren Beavers with 34 points, with lady golfer Helene Lindberg making her mark again with a second place finish on 35. The flight winner and Green Jacket wearer was Keith Griffith with 41 very sound points. CAFE KRONGORG ‘A’ Flight Winner Henning Olsen Monday 9th December 2019 Plutaluang Double Tops for Henning! The boys from Cafe Kronborg, and a lady, went to The Navy course today. We were given the choice of which nines to play and we opted for the most difficult nines, namely the North and West courses. The courses were in excellent condition with nothing to complain about and at 1,000 Bht green and caddy fee who would not be happy. Yet again another golf course with sensible pricing

The highlight of the day, however, was Colin Smith’s “ace” on the island hole, number eight. His majestic six iron unerringly ducked into the hole to give him his fourth personal hole-in-one and the fifth for PLGS this year. Consolation best nine awards went to Tommy Marshall (20 points front nine) and Len Jones (20 points back nine) whilst near-pins were won by Keith Griffith (5), Colin Smith (8), Bill Copeland (15) and Mike Firkin (17). “A” Flight (0-16) 1st Place – Rana Gurnam (12 ) 35 pts c/back 2nd Place – Phil Davies (13) - 35 pts c/back 3rd Place – Richard Fearby (0) 35pts “B” Flight (17+) 1st Place – Keith Griffith (17) 41 pts 2nd Place – Helene Lindberg (21) - 35 pts 3rd Place – Darren Beavers (17) - 34 pts for which it should be lauded and supported. Surprisingly, for these difficult nines, our scores were high and our winner of the ‘A’ Flight last week – Henning Olsen – again came up trump’s ( not sure having regard to political correctness whether you should say that anymore!) The ‘B’ Flight was hotly contested with the first three players on the same scores but Daryl Evans with his 17 points on the back nine including five points on the last three holes just pipped Karl Better. We welcomed back Ty Anderson

Best Front Nine (C) ( non winners) – Tommy Marshall – 20 pts Best Back Nine (B) ( non winners) – Len Jones – 20 pts At the nether end of the final table was the returning Iain Jones and his low score took the “wig’ whilst Michael Lindberg’s dismal back nine gave him his first “silly hat” since his return last week. The presentation ended with the time honoured tradition of the hole-in-one winner buying drinks all round on another memorable day for the Pattaya Links Golf Society. Pattaya Links Golf Society is a PSC affiliated, friendly group and welcomes golfers of all levels. We play Monday ,Wednesday and Friday.” Links” Bar is towards the Southern end of Soi Buakhow. Check the Big board out front for upcoming games schedule. Sign up at Links Bar or online to join us for a fun day of competition golf. and our friend Jesper Rasmussen who we have not seen for two years – good to see you both. ‘A’ Flight (0-21) 1st Henning Olsen 39 points (21) 2nd Rob Brown 37 points (8) 3rd Peter Bygballe 36 points (18) ‘B’ Flight (22+) 1st Daryl Evans 37 points(22) 2nd Karl Better 37 points (35) 3rd Peter Hammond 37 points (31) Longest first putts 9th on North Ty Anderson 9th on West Peter Bygballe

FASCINATING BOAT SHOW Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show combines business with sustainability Thousands of visitors enjoyed boating and lifestyle exhibits at Ocean Marina Yacht Club

porting quality leads. Visitors crescendoed over the weekend as thousands flocked to the show to explore the boating opportunities in Thailand and the extensive range of displays

Four great days of beautiful sunny weather greeted thousands of visitors to the 8th annual Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show where they enjoyed a diverse range of displays at the award-winning marina setting of Ocean Marina Yacht Club – South East Asia’s largest marina. The show was opened by Mr. Napintorn Srisunpang, Vice Minister for Tourism and Sports, and for four days from 21 – 24 November. More than 20 brands of boats were represented with leading brokers Simpson Marine, Boat Lagoon Yachting and Azimut Yachts all present at the show with in-water displays as well as Technohull, Capelli and Funseeker. The first two days saw action on the docks with brokers re-

from luxury properties to home and outdoor products, sports and water sports equipment, international schools and much more. The Food Festival was a focal point through each day and into

ing drinks from leading beer, cider and wine brands. The helicopter rides proved a big hit, with visitors taking the chance to see Jomtien and Pattaya from above, while the free yacht cruises and daily sunset cruise allowed visitors to get a feel of what the yachting lifestyle is all about. Siam Seaplane - the first seaplane service of its kind in the area, and a newcomer to the show - caught the attention of many as did the fun activities for all family members. Organisers placed a strong emphasis on sustainability this year, introducing free water refill stations at the show and implementing a strict no singleuse-plastic policy. This was wellreceived and saved an estimated 5,000 single-use plastic water bottles as a result. With positive talk of quality visi-

the evening as visitors gathered to enjoy delicious bites from many of Pattaya and Bangkok’s leading pop-up restaurants and food trucks, as well as refresh-

tors and high levels of interest in boats at the show, Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show continues in its mission to promote the Gulf of Thailand as a world-

class cruising destination and introducing new people in Bangkok, Pattaya and surrounds to boating and the nautical lifestyle through an experiential show. Mr. Scott Finsten, Harbour Master of Ocean Marina Yacht Club, organisers of Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show, com-

mented, “Our goal as organisers is to provide a platform for business and to promote yachting and the Gulf of Thailand to Thai residents and visitors from overseas. The weather was great this year, visitors enjoyed the diverse displays, some serious leads were generated and we helped to showcase Thailand’s

yachting industry to thousands of visitors. “I’m also very proud of how the marine industry, exhibitors and visitors came together to reduce the plastic used this year. So much single-use-plastic ends up in the Oceans and it’s important we work together to stop that,” added Finsten.

NEW CAMERA TECHNOLOGY Digital cameras and the ability to make your own pro looking pictures and videos are always changing, adding new features and improving old ones. The technologies appearing in today’s cameras were initially discovered several years ago, perhaps even for a different purpose, before becoming part of the mainstream camera world. Here are some of the most interesting and promising changes coming to digital camera technology in the near future. Cameras of the future may no longer require a shutter button. Instead, photographers could wink or use a voice command to tell the camera to record an image. It could work similarly to a hands-free cell phone, where you can issue commands without the need to push a button. The camera might be built into a person’s glasses (“smart” glasses like Google Glass are already starting to appear on the market) or another everyday item. With the camera built into a pair of glasses, aiming it would be easy, too. (Yes, I know what you’re

As more cameras incorporate touch screens, their size could be determined by the size of their display screens, eliminating all other controls and buttons, much like a smartphone. Photography is a visual medium, but the camera of the future may add the sense of smell Photographs that can stimulate senses other than vision are an interesting idea. For example, a photographer could command the camera to record the smell of the scene, embedding it with the visual image it captured. The ability to add smells to images would need to be optional, though. Adding smells to a photograph of food or a field of flowers would be great, but adding smells to photographs of the monkey house at
