inding the perfect bike is just half of the story of your love affair with cycling. The other half of it is making your “relationship” with your bike work by getting the right fit and making sure that yours is a match made in bike heaven, through long or rough, injury-free rides. Just as you would adjust the seat and mirrors to have a better handling of a car you’re driving, a few adjustments are also needed to make your bike truly “yours.” According to Glenn Colendrino, owner of Primo Cycles and a licensed bike fitter, you can have the most expensive bike but [it’s not any good if] you have the worst fit. “Somebody with a cheaper bike with the best fit would still be better off,” adds Colendrino.

hoW a bike fit Works for you

“This is the only system where no rulers are used while you’re being measured and it’s done while you’re in motion.”

having your bike custom-fit for you does not only help you prevent injuries, it also helps you maximize your bike, enabling for a more efficient ride. “we want to make sure you get the maximum stroke for pedaling efficiency. if you’re pedaling with a bad stoke, it will tire you out,” says Colendrino. Custom-fitting will also help you avoid costly upgrades as you don’t have to experiment anymore.

one of the latest technologies in bike fitting is the retül technology which arrived on Philippine shores last year. As a cycling-specific motion-

capture bike fitting system, retül is able to provide highly accurate and comprehensive data that bike fitters like Colendrino can use to make better adjustments to the rider’s bike.

“we follow the same principle as the other bike fitting systems but what sets retül apart is the way we gather the data—it’s precise [and accurate] down to the last millimeter,” adds Colendrino. retül does that by using a three-dimensional measuring system that can immediately generate the rider’s biometrics with just 15 seconds of pedaling as opposed to the traditional system where you get a static fit. “This is the only system where no rulers [are used] while you’re being measured and it’s done while you’re in motion,” Colendrino shares. The fitting session would last for 1-2 hours starting from the pre-fitting where the rider does a couple of exercises that will help the bike fitter determine the rider’s flexibility and how they are with the bike. Anatomical markers are placed on eight key points of the rider’s body and as the rider pedals for 15 seconds, retül will generate the data needed to correct the positioning of the bike. After correction, a second reading is made to allow for a second fitting. riders usually feel the difference immediately after. “what’s nice with the system is it sees you in 3d, even taking note of your knee tracing. if your knee goes out [while pedaling], it will show in the data,” adds Colendrino. The data would be compared with retül- given specific values, and taken into account during adjustments. Some such values are the ankle maximum to determine the saddle height, hip vertical travel for the right crank length, and knee tracing to see your pedaling in relation to the bike frame. based on the results, Colendrino will recommend adjustment/s but ultimately the client determines the best fit.

the Price of coMfort

The retül bike fitting technology may be availed at Primo Cycles for P8,000, comparatively cheaper than a US$350/ bike fitting in the United States. The fitting cost covers initial fitting, adjustment for your other bikes, and follow-up fitting to cater to different riding conditions. Part of Colendrino’s package is the “Zine” which makes a blueprint of your bike, enabling you to put it back together as if it were just retül-ed. Colendrino feels that this system should soon be available in other bike shops. After all, it’s the official bike fitting partner of the Sky Pinarello, Cervelo barracuda, and radio Shack teams—all front runner teams in Tour de france.

FEATURE WHO WILL YOU MEET IN YOUR NEXT RUN? Whether you’re joining the shortest distance or running a Full Mary, you’ll meet the most interesting characters as you stride. Here are some of the interesting and inspiring stories shared by the runners at Run United 1. Visit www.moveformove.org/ RU2012 for the full stories.

MOVING STORIES MOVEFORMOVE.ORG STARTED FROM BEING AN OBSERVATION OF THE

MULTISPORT PHENOMENON IN THE PHILIPPINES AND HAS PROGRESSED TO BECOMING A NARRATIVE OF SUSTAINABLE INSPIRATION BY ANDREA N. MACALINO

hat are stories made of? It sounds easy: think of a plot, a protagonist, a struggle, and an ending. However, there’s more to it than that because a story exists for more than just itself; stories can exist not simply for art’s sake, but for advocacy’s sake as well. This is where moveformove. org comes in. Officially launched in mid-September 2011, it serves as an online venue for athletes from different walks of life to share their stories in bigger hopes of inspiring more people to get into multisport as an advocacy—whether these people are just starting out, are already into multisport, or feel as though they need something to keep them going. “Ripple 100 started in the US. Back then, one of the communications frameworks we used was called the Left to Right movement which uses stories to get people from awareness to specific acts of engagement,” explains Mr. Andre Yap, CEO and Co-Founder of Ripple 100, the organization behind moveformove.org. Moving back to the Philippines allowed Mr. Yap to realize something

about the landscape of multisport in the country. He was initially puzzled by many of his friends who refused nights out, saying they had “long runs in the morning.” They were also talking about a slew of things Mr. Yap wasn’t familiar with such as Italian bike brands, shoes, stability, cushioning, and pace. But as an entrepreneur, all this progressed from a puzzle to a potential market—hence the birth of moveformove.org. Like a double-edged sword, the goal of moveformove.org cuts in two ways: to start people to get started, and to stop people from stopping. After all, Mr. Yap points out, “For every one person who gets started in multisport, there are ten who think ‘It’s not for me.’” Moveformove.org also serves to curate a wide range of stories as it redefines the concept of a library since its inception. Mr. Yap elaborates: “Our vision is that the site will have infinite

variety. We want moveformove to be an ongoing place where people can submit their stories and find stories that will get them through whatever it is they need to get through.” “The dynamics can be simple— anything from finding friends as a social aspect of running, to just feeling good about yourself. The goal for every person is to find the motivation that will get them started and then the motivation that will keep them moving so that it becomes a sustainable lifestyle.” And to do that— “You need a gamut of characters and stories,” Mr. Yap adds. Still, the aim stays the same: to help tell stories that will get people moving—and to keep them moving. For "in telling stories", Mr. Elbert Or, Director of Storyteller Networks, says, “human beings are able not only to make sense of their experiences, but to see more possibilities as well.”

“The goal for every person is to find the motivation that will get them started and then the motivation that will get them moving so it becomes a sustainable lifestyle.”

MEDAL FETISH In every run, one of the things I.T. Professional Roderick Nepomuceno looks forward to aside from crossing the finish line is the medal. A medal collector, he started running last November 2011 and in only four months, he’s already finished a lot of runs in various distances and added numerous medals to his collection. WHAT WOMEN WANT A great number of women love shoes and officemates Lily Rosios and Jane Pajo are no exception. So when their boss made a bet with them thinking they couldn’t finish a run, they set out to prove him wrong, specially that a new pair of shoes for each of them was at stake! Now armed with bragging rights and new pairs of shoes, they’re hooked! LIFEBOX Often, when we’re faced with hardship, that’s when we remember our ties with God. But for the members of LifeBox and students of Mapua Institute of Technology, Ryan Valdez, Drew Abalajon, Christian Esteron, and Ken Nicolas, God is with them from the very beginning. RUN CHAOS Driven by his choice to inspire and encourage other runners, pacer Francis Chua started the running group Run Chaos as a way of giving back to those who’ve helped him along the way.

sometimes we just do a 100-kilometer training ride in daanghari,” says rocky lim. “we'll be dropping by Subic soon to train with Skipper and Ces who are both based there, and maybe even Singapore to train with Mike and Michel who are both based there, as well,” laughingly adds lim. The first race they joined as a team was the 2011 Tour of Clark organized by the Philippine Cycling league. Admittedly, bG hernandez says that the team didn’t achieve the intended results, but it was a memorable experience as it was the first time they bonded as a team. “even if we didn’t do as well as we ought to, it was memorable for us because it was the first time that we raced as a team. we’re still trying to know each other’s riding habits and behaviors in our initial years of being together,” hernandez adds. Although Team Scott-SoleusMultisport is still considered as a very young team, they are very determined to excel. “we have very committed members who put in at least 10-20 hours of multisport training, per week. Some members like Michel Velasco log in even more training time. i’m sure that with that level of commitment, we’re bound to see positive results over the coming years from this team,” says bermudez. Their hard work seems to be showing some signs of potential recently. This January, they joined the 1st Multisport weekend, organized by finishline Sports, and they finished 1st Place in the Team Time Trial event. likewise, four of the five team members who joined the duathlon event got into the Top 10 overall. “This year, we’ve plotted three priority cycling races—Tour of Clark on September, Tour of Matabungkay on october, and Tour of SCTeX on november; for multisport, the priority races would be Subic What does your company do? THEIR DRIVING FORCE(S)

“before the intention to excel was there, close and meaningful friendship was there first. we actually enjoy being with each other and training together more than the race itself. but of course, nothing beats the joy of winning to make our families and sponsors proud,” says ramon Santiago. with majority of the members being family men, they are known to have a very strong and loud cheering team whenever they join races. bG hernandez delightfully shares how people know they’re in the race. “during races, a lot of people know that our wives are with us because they’re usually the loudest people in the crowd. even if we’re losing big time, our wives and children aggressively cheer us on in the race course. At the same time, they also act as our SAG (support and gear) team, organizing race day logistics. what more can a dad ask for?,” says hernandez. “we just want to enjoy racing that’s why we bring our families along. but just to make it clear, we also don’t want to end up being an 'excursion' team. while making races a family affair is very important to us, we’re also as concerned with doing very well in our races to deliver for our sponsors and to satisfy our hunger to win, place well, and make a difference,” shares bermudez, who’s also a Type 2 diabetic. with the solid support of their families and sponsors behind them, and with their passion for multisport and rocksolid determination to become better friends and mature as a team, it’s just inevitable that Team Scott SoleusMultisport would be one of the teams to watch out for in cycling and multisport races in 2012–and beyond.

What made you decide to sponsor the team? Multisport is a strong partner in our marketing objectives—a perfect fit to be associated with the triathlon and cycling team of Multisport magazine. What are your expectations from the team? We hope the team would inspire more aspiring athletes to participate in MultiSport. What is the importance of wearing a sports watch when training and competing? A sports watch is a tool that helps the athlete efficiently perform in training or competition. It is the only way to benchmark performance, and often a source for motivation.

runners fulfill dreaMs at the bull runner dreaM Marathon 03.18.2012

dreams came true last March 18, 2012 for almost 600 runners who crossed the finish line of their first full marathon in nuvali, Sta. rosa, laguna. They make up the 3rd batch of dream Marathoners who completed the program designed by Coach Jim lafferty together with The bull runner herself, Jaymie Pizarro. The bull runner dream Marathon (Tbr dM) is the only race event in the world that offers a program especially designed for first time marathoners. Coach Jim said that this race is unique and very special in so many ways. he explains that having 600 practically newbie runners trying to complete 42k for the first time in this tropical weather requires very careful planning and tight monitoring. This explains why the slots are limited despite the strong demand. online registration for batch 3 opened last September and was filled in just nine hours. “when i crossed the finish line of my first marathon in 2009, i was changed forever. i was so overwhelmed with the experience that i felt compelled to invite anyone and everyone to run a marathon too. After meeting with Coach Jim, we decided to create a marathon for beginners

Multisport April 2012_rev 3.indd 18

taking them by the hand and guiding them from day one of training until they crossed the finish line of their first 42k. That’s how The bull runner dream Marathon was born,” recounts Jaymie on the vision behind Tbr dream Marathon. The training takes a runner through a 22-week marathon training program that you receive upon registration. Through the almost six months of training, runners are pampered with free running clinics called bull Sessions and free lectures called bull Circles. Speakers are highly-respected personalities in the running community such as Coach Jim Saret, Mitch and Armand Mendoza, dr. George Canlas, and dr. randy Molo. The peak of the training plan is a 30k long slow distance run held in nUVAli to give the runners a preview of the race course. “My first training run for the dream Marathon saw me run an 8k. i didn’t know how i was ever going to run a marathon at that stage, however the training program put together by Coach Jim and Coach lit focused on gradual increases. within weeks i was getting out and running close to 20km and within two months i was up near 30k,” says Josh black, Coo of an advertising

agency based in Singapore who flew in and finished 3rd among 482 runners. Another unique feature is that runners, mostly alumni from the previous Tbr dM batches, throw their full support to the new batch. Called dream Chasers and Pacers, there are about 100 runners along the race route pacing and assisting the first-timers. The emotional race experience instilled a strong sense of “paying it forward” among the alumni. Television sportscaster and sports journalist Mico halili shares, “The dream Chasers are exactly what first-time marathoners need. i thought i had none left but a dream Chaser showed me that i could still push.” After crossing the finish line, Tbr dM runner Mia nolasco-Gonzalez shares her thoughts about her experience: “i gained a sense of spirit that i know i would not have been able to feel if i didn’t join Tbr dream Marathon. finish or not, i will never regret working hard. i told myself i’ve already ‘done it’ when i got to the start because i felt successful in preparing for the race. i’ve learned that a marathon isn’t just about achieving as an athlete. it’s achieving a state of mind that reminds me that anything is possible!”
