Breathing your Way to health written by Katrina ramos-atienza
o
xygen—yes, the stuff you breathe every day—has some amazing healing and health benefits. the catch? you have to breathe in massive amounts of it to gain its benefits.
Enter hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). The therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized room. Air pressure is raised to three times higher than normal air pressure, which means that the lungs can gather up to three times more oxygen than at normal air pressure. According to the
Manila Hyperbaric Center, the average person breathes in about six pounds of oxygen a day, but in a single hour of HBOT, a person will take in about 2.4 lbs. of oxygen. This treatment is most commonly used to treat decompression sickness, a hazard of scuba diving. It sounds like science fiction, but

MANILA’S NO STRANGER TO HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY—THERE ARE CENTERS IN THE METRO DEVOTED TO THIS PAINLESS, NON-INVASIVE, AND EFFECTIVE TREATMENT. HERE ARE SOME PICkS.
Hyperbaric Oxygen THerapy, inc. (HbOT, inc.) Opened in 2008, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Inc. provides safe and monitored mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy using a spacious and US FDA (Food & Drug Administration)-approved hyperbaric chamber, the Vitaeris 320. The center is supervised by Dr. Lester Suntay, who trained with the UnderSea & Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) at Long Beach Memorial Hospital, USA. Located inside Tokyo Healthlink Hydrotherapy and Wellness Center in Alabang, the center also offers proximity to other rehab centers, making it a one-stop shop for healing and rejuvenation. the therapy has actually been around for ages. The first hyperbaric chamber was built in 1662. That means the treatment has been around for more than 350 years. When you undergo HBOT, oxygen is diffused into the tissues, organs, brain, and fluids throughout the body, saturating it with pure oxygen. This increase in oxygen provides many benefits, such as enhancing the body's natural healing process; reducing swelling/inflammation, bruising, and infections; improving recovery time from surgery and injury; increasing brain cell function and restoring oxygen to depleted tissues and cells. As a result, HBOT is used to treat cyanide or carbon monoxide poisoning, non-healing wounds, necrotizing infections and gangrene, crushing and radiation injuries, burns, and severe anemia. It is also being studied for its benefits as a treatment for autism, ADD, and ADHD; stroke; cerebral palsy and Bell’s palsy; Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease; and migraines. Athletes and active persons have much to gain from HBOT as well. They reportedly get positive effects from mild hyperbaric therapy. According to DC Hyperbarics in Montrose, Colorado, the therapy speeds recovery from sports injuries as well as post-workout, and increases energy and mental clarity on and off the field. With the increased oxygen levels at the cellular level, healing time is faster and energy levels increase, enabling the athlete to focus and perform better. Curious about this therapy? There are some HBOT centers in Manila (see below for some recommendations) and treatment ranges from 1,500 to 2,000 per hour. Note that most treatments consist of more than one session though. Give it a try and see just how pure oxygen leads to improved health!

What else is neW? Dr. Gar EufEmIo talks about otHEr actIvItIEs an atHlEtE must try. What do you think of barefoot running? I’ve read articles on the topic and talked to different experts as well as runners who actually run barefoot and swear it’s the best way to go. I’m not quite sold on it yet. I believe everyone should stick to what works for them. If your current running style gives you problems, why not experiment on a new technique? I agree that barefoot running is the more natural way to walk and run; that’s how the cavemen did it. But they didn’t have cemented roads, glass, nails, or thumbtacks back then. How can I improve on my training to give me an edge? Athletes should understand that almost everything in sports revolves around the core. It is the ability to maintain balance as external forces act on the body. A good program recruits different (even opposing) muscle groups. Ask any gym instructor for tips on how to develop your core. Try yoga and Pilates—which have been around for a long time. New trends include suspension equipment like Rip 60 and TRX. You’ll feel stronger than you’ve ever been and you’ll look great, too! Do I need a weights program if I do triathlon? I think it can’t hurt, as long as it is a high-repetition and low-weight program. For endurance events, you really do not want to bulk up too much because bigger muscles consume more calories and oxygen (things you desperately need during triathlons). But you don’t compete every single day. It isn’t advisable to just do cardio workouts; it’s better to mix it up. for more injury prevention and recovery advice , you may reach dr. gar eufemio at: +639178135740 gar@eufemio.com.ph gareufemio@gmail.com. Over a hundred aspiring triathletes attended a free beginners’ triathlon talk last September 6, 2012, held at the Events Hall of Ortigas Home Depot. Organized by Team Norman, “TRI Mo kaya” gave beginners an overview of triathlon: training, races, and how they could start their journey in the said sport. Team Norman shared their experiences on Ironman 70.3 and other races. Certified ITU2 triathlon coach Norman Pascual gave a sneak preview of his 12-week Beginner’s Triathlon Program. The event was supported by Multisport Philippines, Shotz, Health Food, Specialized, and Gatorade.
Attracting over 12,000 participants, Run United Philippine Marathon (RUPM)—the newest marathon in the country—successfully concluded the 2012 Run United Series. The first batch of 42k All-Filipino winners at RUPM was led by Irineo Raquin, Carlito Fantilaga, and Jujet de Asis of the national team. Two-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Christabel Martes won the top spot among women runners, followed by Luisa Raterta and Jollyann Ballester. kenyan runners bested other foreign participants in the men’s division as Alex Welly finished first, followed by David kipsang and Jackson Chirchir.

The fourth and final leg of the Powerade Duathlon was held at NUVALI, Sta. Rosa, Laguna on October 28. Three hundred fifty racers came prepared and ready to face NUVALI’s scenic yet challenging course. This was also the same site of last year’s final leg, with a slightly different bike course, which made it even more exciting. Robeno Javier was hailed as the undefeated king of Philippine Duathlon as he swept all four races in the elite men’s category while Rowena Valdez of Team Yellowcab Tri-Clark claimed the top spot in the female elite category. In the team category, Yellowcab Tri-Clark rose above the rest after garnering 3,290 points.

Pinoy triathlete Mirasol Abad made history in Philippine Duathlon as she booked a slot to the 2013 World Games in Colombia with a strong finish in the recently held Century Tuna ASTC Asian Duathlon Championships 2012 in Subic Bay Freeport last November 25, 2012. Abad finished the 10k run, 40k bike, and 5k run event and placed third with a time of 2:01:57. TRAP president Tom Carrasco Jr. shares, “It was a fruitful hosting as Abad became the first duathlete from the Philippines to compete in a World event while victories posted by our young duathletes showed that we are on the right track as far as developing our athletes is concerned. We will try to look for a good duathlon coach from abroad to help train Abad in time for the World Games.
