Welcome Welcome to the 2012 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four Istanbul, our eleventh edition of this extraordinary event. After 20 years, the final phase of the most important continental trophy competition returns to Istanbul. This beautiful city’s growing passion for basketball and its incredible interest for visitors guarantees an unforgettable weekend for all the fans who gather here for the Final Four. After seven months in which our fans have enjoyed the best basketball in Europe – with emotion, spectacle and drama until the last game – this is the moment in which the best four teams of the competition have the unique chance to go one step further and become Turkish Airlines Euroleague champions in the magnificent setting of the Sinan Erdem Arena. We can expect a magic weekend that millions of fans from more than 175 countries will enjoy thanks to the collaboration of our worldwide broadcasting partners and Euroleague.TV. The list of qualified teams for this season’s Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four can be summarized in a single word: historic. CSKA Moscow, F.C. Barcelona Regal, Olympiacos Piraeus and Panathinaikos Athens are four of the most legendary teams in European history, having won 15 Euroleague titles among them. One of them will add to its trophy case with a new continental crown on Sunday. In addition to four great games, the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four also features multiple parallel events that aim to give all our fans a full event experience. This year we also have the 10th anniversary edition of the Nike International Junior Tournament, our annual corporate social responsibility event in which this year Euroleague Basketball will present its new CSR and marketing partnership program supported by Turkish Airlines, One Team, and the Efes Pilsener Euroleague Awards Ceremony, where the season’s very best players will be honored. We would like to express our gratitude to our sponsors bwin, Nike, Efes Pilsen, Intersport and Mondo for their confidence in Euroleague Basketball; the Turkish Basketball Federation and Detur for being hosts of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four; and of course Turkish Airlines, our title sponsor, which besides supporting us during the whole season has intensified its collaboration now to guarantee the best possible Final Four in its home country. Finally, I just want to wish good luck to all the Final Four teams and to all the followers of our sport to make this weekend an unforgettable event.

Seeing its record for consecutive Final Four qualifications halted one year ago proved more than enough motivation for CSKA Moscow to return as a favorite this season to an event that has become like its second home. CSKA’s absence from the 2011 edition ended its remarkable run of eight consecutive Final Four appearances, a record that’s likely to stand the test of time, considering that no other team has managed to qualify for more than four in a row. Having returned to its comfort zone, CSKA can now focus on expanding its collection of six previous Euroleague trophies to move within one of the all-time leader, Real Madrid. Although its first four continental crowns were won between 1961 and 1971, two more victories in four title-game appearances from 2006 to 2009 prove that CSKA has everything it takes to build a modern dynasty, too. CSKA’s recent success can be traced to very demanding standards met again and again over its long history. Founded in 1924, CSKA has won 24 Soviet Union League titles and 18 Russian League trophies, including the last nine editions. CSKA won its first Euroleague title in 1961 and lifted the trophy again in 1963, 1969 and 1971 with head coach Alexander Gomelskiy, scoring guard Sergey Belov, center Vladimir Andreev and power forward Gennadiy Volnov as its main references. After a down period that began in the late 1980s, CSKA returned to the European elite by reaching the Euroleague Final Four in 1996 and the SuproLeague Final Four in 2001.

Since then, CSKA has become a model of consistency in pro basketball, reaching every Final Four between 2003 and 2010. Theo Papaloukas, J.R. Holden, Matjaz Smodis, Trajan Langdon, David Andersen and head coach Ettore Messina, among many others, enabled CSKA to lift the Euroleague trophy in 2006 and 2008. In 2006, CSKA downed two-time defending champion Maccabi in Prague for its first continental crown in 35 years. CSKA beat Maccabi again in the 2008 title game. It also reached title games in 2007 and 2009, only to lose a pair of all-time classic finals by two points each against Panathinaikos Athens. After an underwhelming Euroleague season last year, CSKA moved aggressively in the off-season market, landing Milos Teodosic, Nenad Krstic and Andrei Kirilenko, while keeping Viktor Khryapa, Ramunas Siskauskas and Alexey Shved. Any doubt that CSKA had forgotten how to dominate was erased when it became the only team to finish the regular season undefeated. Its 10-0 record included two prestigious wins against defending champion Panathinaikos: 7678 after overtime in Athens behind 14 points by Siskauskas, and 91-75 at home with 17 points from Krstic. CSKA faced a tough Top 16 group featuring Anadolu Efes, Galatasaray Medical Park and Olympiacos, but won its first game against each to stay completely out of trouble. CSKA bounced back from its first Euroleague loss, on the road to Galatasaray, by hitting 11 of 12 first-half three-pointers on its way to a 96-64 home win against Olympiacos that guaranteed a playoff spot. In the playoffs against Gescrap BB of Spain, CSKA stayed undefeated at home by winning the first two contests in their best-of-five series by an average of 28 points as Krstic scored 18 in Game 1 and Kirilenko 20 in Game 2. Despite a road loss in Game 3, CSKA clinched its Final Four return with a 71-73 victory as Kirilenko dominated Game 4 in Bilbao. CSKA reaches the Final Four having led the 2011-12 Euroleague in assists, averaging 19.5, and performance index rating, with 102.5 per game, while pleasing fans with physical defense and a fun-to-watch playing style full of fastbreaks and alley-oops. In his first full season on CSKA’s bench, head coach Jonas Kazlauskas has assembled a rock-solid team in which all of his main players feel important. What makes CSKA a unique team, however, is its competitive character, built through decades of success and challenges. If you play for CSKA, you must win as much as possible, a simple yet difficult goal. The CSKA jersey carries a legacy that each player feels bound to honor. If that winning character leads to a seventh continental crown in Istanbul, CSKA will write a new chapter in basketball’s history books.

Viktor Khryapa
Veteran forward Viktor Khryapa of CSKA Moscow comes to his fifth Final Four in Istanbul looking for a second Euroleague trophy to lift. A former All-Euroleague First Team selection and Best Defender Trophy winner, Khryapa is the total package, a true star on both ends of the floor. He has teamed with Andrei Kirilenko to form a forward tandem that strikes fear into the hearts of CSKA’s opponents. Khryapa was born in Kiev and started his career with the Ukrainian club Khimik. He also played for Saratov in Russia before joining CSKA as a teenager and helping the Moscow powerhouse make the Final Four in 2003 and 2004. Khryapa returned to Moscow from the NBA in early 2008 to help his old club claim the Euroleague crown, his first and the team’s second in three seasons. Later that summer, he was a key performer as Russia won the EuroBasket gold medal. Khryapa’s breakout season was 2009-10. He led both the offense and defense as CSKA extended its record-stretching Final Four run to eight in a row. Euroleague head coaches made him the winner of that season’s Best Defender Trophy, while fans and media voted him to the All-Euroleague First Team. On offense, Khryapa’s talents are highlighted by court vision that has let him dish the third-most assists of any Euroleague forward this century. On defense, he can guard any position and ranks 10th all-time among Euroleague players in blocked shots. In short, Khryapa is a serious game changer and a triple-double threat. On CSKA’s star-studded squad, he’s the glue that brings it all together and a main factor as CSKA looks to take the title back to Moscow.

Head coach
Jonas Kazlauskas When chasing a Turkish Airlines Euroleague title, experience can make all the difference. That philosophy guided CSKA Moscow when it hired Jonas Kazlauskas, one of the most widely travelled and successful coaches in the world. Kazlauskas knows what it takes to win in the Euroleague. He gave basketball-mad Lithuania its only Euroleague champion by coaching Zalgiris Kaunas to the 1999 title. His team played attractive, attacking basketball and posted the highest title-game scoring, 82 points, in more than a decade. Kazlauskas followed up his six seasons at Zalgiris, which also included a Saporta Cup crown in 1998, with four at Lietuvos Rytas, Lithuania’s other major club. His next stop was one of this season’s other Final Four teams, Olympiacos. In 2006, Kazlauskas and the Reds lost their third and final playoff game in the closing seconds on the road against two-time champion Maccabi Tel Aviv. Kazlauskas next turned his attention to national team coaching, which he had already done with success, winning a bronze medal for Lithuania at the 2000 Olympic Games. Now, he took the Chinese national team to two Asian gold medals on the way to the quarterfinals of the 2008 games in Beijing. In 2009, he led Greece to bronze in the European Championships. Kazlauskas joined CSKA midway through last season and soon won the Russian League title, the 10th national or regional club trophy of his career. Now, he has sent CSKA back to the Final Four with an 18-2 record.
Legend
Although his prior Euroleague title dates to last century, there is no doubt that Jonas Kazlauskas is ready, willing and able to seize another trophy for CSKA Moscow in Istanbul.

Sergei Belov As CSKA Moscow’s franchise player in the late 1960s and 1970s, shooting guard Sergei Belov became one of international basketball’s first superstars. Belov first made a name for himself by leading CSKA to Euroleague titles in 1969 and 1971. In the 1969 final, he played all 50 minutes and scored 19 points as CSKA survived a doubleovertime classic by downing Real Madrid 103-93. In 1971, Belov scored 24 points as CSKA topped Ignis Varese 67-53 and claimed its fourth continental crown. Besides those high points, Belov also added 11 Soviet League titles in his 12 seasons with CSKA. In their two other Euroleague finals, in 1970 and 1973, Belov scored 21 and 36 points, respectively, but Varese of Italy won both games. Belov’s international career, for which he remains an icon for young Russian players, was equally impressive. With the Soviet national team, Belov won gold medals at the World Championships in 1967 and 1974, at four EuroBaskets — in 1967, 1969, 1971 and 1979 — and at the 1972 Olympic Games. In that historic game, Belov led all scorers with 20 points as the Soviet Union recorded a 51-50 victory over the United States. He also owns Olympic bronze medals from 1968, 1976 and 1980. Altogether, Belov finished his playing career with 15 medals with the Soviet Union at Olympic Games, World Championships and EuroBaskets. As a head coach, Belov guided Russia to silver medals at the 1994 and 1998 World Championships and bronze at EuroBasket 1997. He was honored by Euroleague Basketball as one of the 50 most influential personalities in European club basketball history in 2008 and chosen to the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2010.

By reaching its third Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four since 2009, FC Barcelona Regal this season has already been able to live up to its incredibly high standards. With its 12th Final Four appearance overall since the first one, back in 1989, Barcelona continues showing great consistency and readiness to challenge for the Euroleague trophy. The 2012 Final Four gives Barcelona a chance to keep adding to its stuffed trophy case, which now boasts nearly 40 domestic honors and six European trophies, including two as continental champion. Founded in 1926, FC Barcelona Regal had its first golden age during the 1980s. The club reached the 1984 Euroleague final before falling to Virtus Roma, then won three other continental trophies – the Saporta Cup in 1985 and 1986, the Korac Cup in 1987 – behind legends like Nacho Solozabal, Chicho Sibilio, Andres Jimenez and Juan Antonio “Epi” San Epifanio. The team’s winning momentum climbed from there as Barcelona made it to the Euroleague Final Four in three successive seasons starting in 1989, but lost to eventual champion Split each time, including twice in the title game. Later that decade, Barcelona added two more finals appearances, in 1996 against Panathinaikos and in 1997 against Olympiacos, but could not take the Euroleague trophy back home.

After winning the Korac Cup trophy in 1999, Barcelona’s golden opportunity came in 2003, with the Final Four coming to its home court. Under head coach Svetislav Pesic, the club brought together Dejan Bodiroga and Gregor Fucka to join Sarunas Jasikevicius and Juan Carlos Navarro, and they delivered a Final Four berth. In front of nearly 17,000 fans at Palau Sant Jordi, Barcelona beat Benetton Treviso 76-65 to finally claim its first Euroleague title. Barcelona returned to the Final Four in 2006 and 2009, but did not get past the semifinals either time. It all clicked again for Barcelona in 2010, however, with Xavi Pascual as head coach and Navarro the team’s homegrown superstar. Barcelona stormed into the Final Four with an 18-2 record and beat both CSKA and Olympiacos by double digits to lift the continental trophy for a second time. Despite an early playoffs exit against Panathinaikos last season, Barcelona came right back this year with Chuck Eidson and Marcelinho Huertas as its main additions to complement Juan Carlos Navarro, Pete Mickeal, Fran Vazquez, Boniface Ndong and Erazem Lorbek. Barcelona won its regular season group, was the only undefeated team in the Top 16 and became the sole team to sweep its best-of-five playoffs series, downing Unics Kazan 3-0 to land a spot in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four with a nearperfect 18-1 record. No Euroleague team has been able to defeat Barcelona at Palau Blaugrana this season, as the club won all of its home games by an average margin of 14.9 points. Along the way, Barcelona has posted record-breaking defensive numbers, allowing only 61.5 points per game. In one of those home games, against Union Olimpija, Navarro became the Euroleague’s all-time top scorer, accumulating 2,840 points before the 2012 Final Four. So far this season Lorbek has been the team’s top scorer (13.8 ppg.) and rebounder (4.7 rpg.). Barcelona has been just as deadly on the road, knocking off Maccabi Electra, Zalgiris Kaunas, Galatasaray Medical Park, Bennet Cantu and Unics Kazan in intimidating surroundings. They say defense wins titles, a plus for Barcelona, but the team also has scorers like Navarro, Lorbek, Mickeal and Eidson, who add up to a formidable offensive force with great one-on-one skills. All of them are natural-born winners, too, so expect Barcelona to play its best basketball on the biggest stage possible – the 2012 Final Four!

Player Spotlight
Pete Mickeal Even to the casual observer, it is clear just how important Pete Mickeal is to FC Barcelona Regal’s success. The versatile forward is both a team player and a vocal leader, whose basketball skills and personality have been key reasons why Barcelona’s blue-and-garnet colors will fly at the Final Four in Istanbul. Moreover, just one season removed from a careerthreatening injury, Mickeal is savoring the sweet taste of success more than ever. The road to stardom was never easy for Mickeal, who played for five teams in Greece, Russia, Spain and South Korea before catching on with Euroleague side Tau Ceramica in 2007. That’s when a wider audience began to fully appreciate Mickeal’s great skills and work ethic. In his two seasons with Tau, Mickeal reached his first Euroleague Final Four and was named MVP of the Spanish League finals on the way to that competition’s 2008 title. His next stop was Barcelona, where within a year he won his first Euroleague title as a main cog in the middle of one of the most dominant teams this century. Despite missing almost all of last season to injury, Mickeal has performed well as ever this year. On the floor, his combination of strength, footwork, speed and athleticism creates numerous mismatches. Add to that his fantastic three-point accuracy, ability to score near the basket with either hand, aggressive style and high basketball IQ, and it’s fair to say that Mickeal is a nightmare for opponents. It became clear by how much he was missed last season that Mickeal is Barcelona’s linchpin. Be sure that at this Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four, he will give all it takes so that Barcelona enjoys another dose of Euroleague bliss.

Head coach
Xavi Pascual Few head coaches, if any, have been more successful than Xavi Pascual has in his first four full seasons in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague. Pascual, 39, arrived at FC Barcelona in 2004-05 to coach its fourth-division squad and coordinate all of its youth teams. In just one year, Pascual was promoted to the first team as Dusko Ivanovic’s assistant coach, helping Barcelona reach the 2006 Final Four. Pascual replaced Ivanovic as head coach in February 2008 and guided the team to the Spanish League finals. In his first full season as head coach, Pascual’s Barcelona squad won the Spanish League title and made it to the 2009 Final Four. In 2010, he did even better, lifting the Spanish King’s Cup and, above all, the club’s second Euroleague trophy. At 37, Pascual had become one of the youngest coaches ever to win the Euroleague. Last season, Pascual could not reach the Final Four but he bounced back at home, winning the Spanish League and the King’s Cup trophies.
Legend
Pascual studied to become an industrial engineer and it shows in the well-organized, methodical and under-control character of his teams. He has turned Barcelona into one of the best defensive teams in Euroleague history, allowing just 61.5 points per game this season. Though ambitious and analytical, Pascual is also a player’s coach who has built a true team on a foundation of loyalty. Together, Pascual and Barcelona’s rock-solid squad make a new bid now to conquer another Euroleague title in Istanbul.

Roberto Dueñas In less than a decade, Roberto Dueñas went being from being discovered by a scout at a bus stop to becoming one of the best defensive centers in Europe. Dueñas, a 2.21-meter center with great court vision, joined FC Barcelona during the 1994-95 season, at age 19. The club was patient with Dueñas, letting him get valuable experience through on its junior teams while also giving him select minutes with the first team. His breakout moment came in Game 5 of the 1997 Spanish League finals, when Dueñas tallied 13 points and 12 rebounds to lead Barcelona to a big win against archrival Real Madrid. Dueñas earned the finals MVP honor as he claimed one of the six Spanish League titles he would celebrate with the club. He also won two Copa del Rey trophies, the 1999 Korac Cup title and a silver medal with Spain at EuroBasket 1999 His finest moment came in 2003, when Dueñas helped Barcelona win its first Euroleague title as a full-time starter and the team’s leading rebounder. As such, Dueñas was instrumental in Barcelona’s first triple-crown victory that year, which included Spanish League and Spanish Cup titles, too. Over the years, Dueñas provided a defensive wall for Barcelona and proved to be an immovable force for opposing big men. His ability to distribute the ball turned him into an unpredictable player, as well. Dueñas also played for Askavayu Girona and Joventut Badalona before retiring in 2007, at the early age of 31, due to chronic back problems. A month later, FC Barcelona announced that his No. 12 jersey would be just the fifth in club history to be retired. Today, Dueñas works to develop young talents on Barcelona’s youth teams.

Founded in 1931, Olympiacos won just four Greek League titles through its first six decades. Then, everything changed in the 1990s, when head coach Ioannis Ioannidis and Olympiacos quickly matched that previous collection with four more between 1993 and 1996. In addition, the Reds burst onto the international stage by becoming Euroleague finalists in both 1994 and 1995, although losing the trophy both times to Spanish teams Joventut and Real Madrid, respectively. When Dusan Ivkovic was chosen as the new head coach prior to the 1996-97 season, everything came together at last for the Reds. The following spring, the team seized its first Euroleague title by downing FC Barcelona 73-58 in Rome behind an unforgettable performance from guard David Rivers. The Reds turned that triumph into their country’s first triple crown by adding both the Greek Cup and a fifth consecutive Greek League title that season.

By reaching the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four for the third time in four years, Olympiacos has proven once again how much it deserves a hardearned place among the very elite of European basketball clubs. Olympiacos has been a member of that select circle for the better part of the last two decades. With six previous Final Four appearances, Olympiacos already boasted a total that only four other clubs have exceeded. This, its seventh Final Four qualification, however, was perhaps the club’s least predictable. Several months ago, few expected the Reds to reach this deep into the competition. But Olympiacos played its best basketball at the right time, winning six of its last eight games to crash the Final Four. Now, as they reach Istanbul still on an upward arc of improvement, the Reds are that most dangerous of Final Four participants – a team with everything to gain and nothing to lose.

Olympiacos made it back to the Final Four in 1999, but it had to wait until 2002 to win another trophy, the Greek Cup. Since then, Olympiacos has made it to the Euroleague playoffs in each of the last seven seasons, tying the record, while fighting its way into the Final Four in 2009 and 2010. The Reds went all the way to the 2010 Euroleague title game but, unlike in 1997, Barcelona prevailed this time. Olympiacos added two more Greek Cup titles in 2010 and 2011, the latter with Ivkovic back at the helm. Olympiacos faced the 2011-12 with a reduced budget but was able to build a team around superstar guard Vassilis Spanoulis. With roles clearly defined from the start, Ivkovic gave young players like Kostas Papanikolaou, Kostas Sloukas, Dimitrios Katsivelis and Evangelos Mantzaris plenty of chances to prove their value. Kyle Hines, Pero Antic, Lazaros Papadopoulos and Martynas Gecevicius were the team’s main summer signings. Olympiacos started the Euroleague regular season with a 1-3 record, losing three times on the road. The Reds knew they had to be rock-solid at Peace and Friendship Stadium – and they were. They followed an outstanding Spanoulis to four consecutive home wins and a place in the Top 16 before a 74-79 road win in Nancy allowed Olympiacos to finish second in its regular season group. Olympiacos got stronger for the Top 16 by inking center Joey Dorsey and guard Acie Law in what proved to be critical moves. Although Olympiacos lost its first two Top 16 games, including its only home defeat all season, against CSKA, both players proved valuable as the Reds bounced back strong. First, they managed to beat Anadolu Efes twice in a row, 83-65 at home and 65-67 in Istanbul, the latter on game-winning free throws by Sloukas. Survival came down to a makeor-break home game against Galatasaray Medical Park, which Olympiacos won 88-81 with 20 points and 8 assists by Spanoulis. The Reds went on to face Montepaschi Siena in the playoffs, stealing the home court advantage with a 75-82 road win in Game 1 behind late heroics by Georgios Printezis. Despite losing Game 2 in the final seconds, Hines led Olympiacos to back-to-back home victories to avenge the playoffs loss to Montepaschi a year earlier and to reach the Final Four! It took Olympiacos an adjustment period to play to its full potential, but Dorsey, Hines and Antic have given the Reds toughness and hustle in the paint while Spanoulis and Printezis have been playing some of the best basketball of their careers. Young guns Mantzaris, Sloukas and Kostas Papanikolaou now have another veteran, Law, to guide them. As a group, Coach Ivkovic and his players are ready to continue exceeding expectations in their quest for the Euroleague title.

Georgios Printezis After nine seasons in the competition and two stints with his hometown team, Olympiacos fan favorite forward Georgios Printezis comes to the 2012 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four aiming to lift a continental trophy for the first time. A lifelong fan of Olympiacos, Printezis first joined the Reds in his early teens and made his Euroleague debut as a 17-year-old in the 200203 season opener. After several years of limited playing time, Printezis went on loan for the 2006-07 campaign and enjoyed a breakout year for Olympia Larissa. When he rejoined the Reds, Printezis earned a more important role. His speed, talent and versatility were instrumental in helping Olympiacos reach the Euroleague Final Four in 2009, the club’s first such appearance in a decade. He also played on the Greek national team that won the bronze medal at EuroBasket 2009. His great progress did not go unnoticed as Unicaja of Spain signed Printezis to a three-year deal in 2009. Early in his first season abroad, Printezis fell badly during a dunk attempt and fractured his shoulder. Though he bounced back and ended up having a good season, his role with Unicaja became less prominent as time passed. Printezis decided to return home and rejoined Olympiacos in April 2011. In his second stint with the Reds, Printezis has developed into a team leader. His expanded shooting range has helped him open the floor for teammates even as he continues to score inside against bigger defenders thanks to his speed, agility and smarts. This season, Printezis had his best performances when the Reds needed him most. He scored 16 points in the team’s go-ahead Top 16 win against Galatasaray Medical Park and 20 more, including 2 key three-pointers down the stretch, in a Game 1 playoffs road win against Montepaschi Siena. Now in the prime of his career, the time is right for Printezis to fight for his first Euroleague title.

Head coach
Dusan Ivkovic The man who guided Olympiacos to the mountaintop for its only Euroleague title yet, Dusan Ivkovic, hopes to mark the 15th anniversary of that accomplishment by lifting the trophy with the Reds again this season. Ivkovic, the only head coach to have won all four major European titles, spent three seasons with the Reds between 1996 and 1999, guiding the team to the 1997 Euroleague title. After a decade-long playing career at Radnicki in his hometown of Belgrade, Ivkovic made waves as soon as he went into coaching, leading Partizan to both the Yugoslavian League and Korac Cup titles in 1979. Ivkovic remained mainly in Yugoslavia, apart from a stint at Aris in the early 1980s, until he joined PAOK in the 1990s, where he won the 1992 Greek League and reached his and the club’s first Final Four in 1993. Then, in his first season with Olympiacos, Ivkovic ended the frustration of the club’s two previous title-game losses by pushing the Reds into the winner’s circle in 1997. They made it a triple crown together by winning the Greek League and Greek Cup that season, too. Two years later, in 1999, they were back in the Final Four, but lost in the semifinals to eventual champion Zalgiris Kaunas. Later, in between winning the 2000 Saporta Cup with AEK Athens and the 2006 Eurocup with Dynamo Moscow, Ivkovic took CSKA Moscow to three consecutive Euroleague Final Fours from 2003 to 2005. Three more Russian League crowns with CSKA, plus the 1990 World Championships title and three EuroBasket gold medals with Yugoslavia, also highlight his consistently outstanding career on the bench. Considered a dean among world basketball coaches, Ivkovic was honored in 2008 as one of 50 legends of the first 50 years of European club basketball.
Legend
At 68 years old, with more than 300 games in European competition under his belt, Ivkovic is still going strong as ever as he leads Olympiacos into the 2012 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four.
Milan Tomic Milan Tomic has earned his status as an Olympiacos icon with years of hard work both on the court and on the sidelines. A star player in the 1990s, Tomic eventually became team captain and over the past four seasons has taken on a key role as assistant coach. Tomic started his career with Radnicki in his native Serbia and came to Olympiacos as an 18-year-old prospect in the summer of 1991. His fighting spirit persuaded head coach Ioannis Ioannidis to sign him for the first team. Tomic made his Olympiacos debut in the 1992-93 season and soon proved more than just a lucky charm as the Reds won five consecutive Greek League titles with him on the roster. He became a key player for Coach Ioannidis as the starting point guard of a lineup that also reached back-to-back Euroleague title games in 1994 and 1995. Never a great scorer, his court sense and aggressive defense turned Tomic into a crucial player. In 1997, with Coach Dusan Ivkovic as his new boss, Tomic helped Olympiacos win a historic triple crown – the Greek League, the Greek Cup and the Reds’ only Euroleague title to date. Tomic scored 9 points in the Euroleague title-game victory against F.C. Barcelona. Tomic later became the Olympiacos team captain and led the Reds back to the Final Four in 1999. He kept playing for Olympiacos until 2004, when he joined Jesi of Italy. Tomic finished his career with Greek side Kolossos. Tomic totaled 383 Greek League games and 214 Euroleague showdowns in 13 years with Olympiacos. When Panagiotis Giannakis joined Olympiacos as head coach in February 2008, he asked Tomic to join his coaching staff. Tomic has been an assistant coach ever since, helping guide the team to three Final Fours in his four seasons on the bench.

Its true golden era began in 1999, however, the year that Zeljko Obradovic took over the Panathinaikos bench. The maestro led the Greens to Final Fours in each of his first three seasons. In the very first of those, Panathinaikos lifted its second Euroleague trophy in Thessaloniki with a victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv. Two seasons later, in 2002, the Greens won it all again by upsetting Virtus Bologna in comeback fashion, marking the only title game of the 25-year Final Four era won on the home floor of the other finalist.

The Greens were one of the earliest basketball dynasties in Greece thanks to 12 domestic titles in a 17-year stretch between 1967 and 1984. After a dip in quality in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Panathinaikos bounced back to become a top team. After back-to-back semifinal defeats in 1994 and 1995, Panathinaikos finally claimed its first Euroleague title in 1996, led by Panagiotis Giannakis, Dominique Wilkins, Stojan Vrankovic and Fragiskos Alvertis.

The club that has won the most Euroleague titles over the last 44 years, Panathinaikos Athens, has its sights set on some even bigger goals as it arrives at the 2012 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four in Istanbul. The Greens have piled up their six Euroleague titles so far since 1996, the second-fastest trophy-collecting pace in competition history. The next title would break a tie with their semifinals opponent this season, CSKA Moscow, and put Panathinaikos within one more trophy of tying European basketball’s most successful club ever, Real Madrid. What’s more, victory in Istanbul would make Panathinaikos just the second team to seize backto-back continental crowns over the last two decades, the golden era of European basketball. And since winning Final Fours has become second nature to Panathinaikos lately, all of it seems possible in Istanbul.

Panathinaikos lost its only semifinal under Obradovic at the 2005 Final Four in Moscow, but within two years, the trio of Dimitris Diamantidis, Mike Batiste and Ramunas Siskauskas led the Greens to a fourth title at home in Athens before more than 18,000 of the team’s incredible fans at OAKA arena. Starting then, the Greens have owned the Euroleague title in odd-numbered years. With victories in the Berlin 2009 and Barcelona 2011 title games, Panathinaikos added its fifth and sixth Euroleague crowns with confident displays of knowhow against classic opponents. Now the club has reached yet another Final Four to accomplish the only thing missing from its historic run of greatness – back-to-back Euroleague championships. Panathinaikos started the 2011-12 campaign with the vast majority of last season’s squad back, experience that showed with three big wins to start the Euroleague season. The Green’s first test came against their future semifinals opponent, CSKA Moscow. Panathinaikos lost a late lead and fell at home in overtime. An unexpected road loss at Brose Baskets followed, and a third in a row – which hadn’t happened to Panathinaikos since 2006 – seemed imminent until reigning Euroleague MVP Diamantidis hit consecutive three-pointers in the game’s last 12 seconds to beat Unicaja on the road. The Greens followed with two wins by a combined 53 points, and despite a loss in Moscow, finished Group B in second place with a 7-3 record. The Greens started the Top 16 with a blowout win at EA7 Emporio Armani Milan, but lost the following week at home to Unics Kazan. Kostas Kaimakoglou starred in the team’s first visit to Istanbul this season as Panathinaikos beat Fenerbahce Ulker first away and then at home. Another surprise Top 16 home loss, this time at the hands of Milan, set the stage for a decisive Top 16 final at Kazan. In the end, its bench players scored 47 points to overwhelm Unics and send Panathinaikos into the playoffs with home-court advantage. In their best-of-five series, the most intense rivalry in the world this century, Panathinaikos vs. Maccabi, got even better from game to game in what turned out to be one of the great playoffs in basketball history. Panathinaikos won Game 1 rather easily, but Maccabi evened things with an overtime victory at OAKA in Game 2. A Maccabi home win in Game 3 put the Greens’ backs to the wall. However, Panathinaikos rallied to take Game 4 and survived Game 5 in the closing seconds behind a mighty Diamantidis to secure a spot at the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four. With 10 players who have been Euroleague champs on the roster and a coaching wizard pulling the strings, Panathinaikos can never be called underdogs. What’s more, the Greens land in Istanbul with the full confidence of champions looking to celebrate their first repeat title when the weekend ends.

Player Spotlight
Sarunas Jasikevicius At 36 years old, Sarunas Jasikevicius already has a resume and a highlight reel to rank among the all-time greats, but the player known across Europe by his nickname, “Saras”, is far from finished. Already the only player ever to take the Euroleague title with three different teams, Jasikevicius is now trying to become just the fifth player ever to win five crowns. After playing college basketball in the United States, the Lithuanian native worked his way up the ladder in Europe. Strong seasons with Lietuvos Rytas in Lithuania and Union Olimpija in Slovenia resulted in a call from Barcelona, whom he helped to claim its first Euroleague title in 2003. At his next stop, Saras helped Maccabi Tel Aviv seal its first backto-back Euroleague titles – and the only ones won by any team since 1991 – as he was named Final Four MVP in 2005. Soon, Jasikevicius joined Panathinaikos and proved to be a major factor as the Greens won the 2009 Final Four and he lifted his fourth title. In addition to his Euroleague feats, Saras has earned gold and bronze medals from the European championships, an Olympic bronze medal as a member of the Lithuanian national team, plus domestic league and cup crowns in five different countries. Also, in 2008, Jasikevicius was named one of the 50 legends of the first 50 years of European club basketball. A master of the pick-and-roll, wizardly passer and uncanny three-point marksman, Saras is also fearless with the ball in his hands and the game on the line. His ability to win games should never be doubted, especially at the 2012 Final Four.

Head coach
Zeljko Obradovic Twenty years later, Zeljko Obradovic returns to Istanbul, the site of the first – and perhaps most impressive – of his incredible eight Euroleague titles. At the 1992 Final Four, Obradovic was the 32-year-old rookie head coach of Partizan Belgrade, less than one season removed from trading a player uniform for a suit and tie on the sidelines. Even after Partizan edged Joventut Badalona that year on a Sasha Djordjevic threepoint at the buzzer of the Euroleague title game, few could predict the full extent of Obradovic’s coaching potential. Season by season since that day, his potential has evolved into genius. In rapid succession, Obradovic continued racking up titles, trophies and medals. His second Euroleague crown came two years later with the same Badalona team he beat for his first. Obradovic’s third Euroleague title came with Real Madrid in 1995, and before the decade ended, he lifted Saporta Cups with both Madrid and Benetton Treviso. All of which was just a warmup for Obradovic. Since joining Panathinaikos at the turn of the century, he has led the Greens to five Euroleague trophies, a total that exceeds any other coach in the history of the competition.
Legend
After working with four clubs in three countries over his first eight years on the bench, Obradovic has found a home in Athens. Now in his 13th season with the Greens, Obradovic has so far accumulated an awesome haul of 11 Greek League and seven Greek Cup titles to go with their five Euroleague titles together. Already considered one of the greatest basketball coaches ever, a new trophy in Istanbul would point Zeljko Obradovic toward the ranks of the best ever in any sport.
Ibrahim Kutluay Ibrahim Kutluay was not merely an exquisite shooter and scoring machine, but a true basketball trailblazer who transcended sports to become a cultural icon in two countries. Kutluay’s distinction as the first and still only Turkish player to win the Euroleague title comes with an even deeper meaning. As the first Turk ever to play pro sports in Greece, he won the Euroleague while playing for Panathinaikos, and in the process became a symbol of peace between the two countries. Kutluay started his professional career with Fenerbahce and reached a Euroleague Final Four with Efes Pilsen in 2000. In search of bigger challenges, Kutluay joined Greek powerhouse AEK Athens for the 2000-01 season and was named MVP while leading that team to win the Greek Cup. He followed that by leading the Turkish national team to a silver medal at EuroBasket 2001, played in his home country. He joined Panathinaikos that summer and was far from intimidated by the challenge. In fact, Kutluay was instrumental in allowing Panathinaikos to lift the Euroleague trophy for the third time. He was the top scorer in the 2002 title game with 22 points as the Greens came from behind to beat Kinder 83-89 on its home court in Bologna, Italy. Kutluay scored 7 points in the final 45 seconds, including a game-deciding threepointer. He also won a pair of Greek League titles with the Greens in 2003 and 2005, when he again led the Greens back to the Final Four. Kutluay returned home and won the Turkish League with Ulkerspor in 2006 and with Fenerbahce Ulker in 2007. Beyond his legendary on-court achievements, Kutluay will always be remembered as a true gentleman who brought two countries closer.

Istanbul Topkapı Palace When one thinks of Sultanahmet, Topkapı Palace is one of the first of its famous museums to come to mind. It is one of the world’s largest and oldest palaces still in existence today. Following its establishment in the 15th century, this magnificent and mysterious structure became the stage for every detail of the life of the Ottoman Dynasty, the rulers of the Ottoman Empire. After the declaration of the Turkish Republic, the palace was transformed into a museum. Today, a plethora of artifacts beyond all value, and without equal in the world, are still on display in its halls.
Small St. Sophia Mosque It was built in the period of Justinian the 1st. Its original name was “Sergios and Bacchos Church”. Stated in the epitaph above the lower columns were commissioned by Justinian the 1st for saints named St.Sergios and St. Bacchos.
Sultanahmet Mosque The Blue Mosque, one of Istanbul’s most prominent symbols, immediately astounds every visitor to the city. It is located directly opposite the Hagia Sophia Museum. The mosque takes its name from Sultanahmet Square, and is the most important of the mosques to be built as an endowment to the city during the Ottoman Empire.
Turkish & Islamic Arts Museum The museum was first opened in the Süleymaniye Mosque Complex in 1914 as “Evkaf-ı İslâmiye Müzesi” (The Islamic Foundations Museum). During the Republican period, the name of the museum was changed to the “Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts”. It was moved to the İbrahim Paşa Palace in Sultanahmet in 1983.
Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıçı) Fifty two steps, a jungle of three hundred and thirty six columns, an enchanting, uncanny darkness, and the phosphorescence of the water...like a secret underground kingdom, which has waited for fifteen hundred years for the sun’s light to illuminate it. It is the water cistern, which was built by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian the First (527 – 565) in order to meet the water needs of the city.
Grand Bazaar Grand Bazaar is a place which keeps lots of vanishing professions alive with their unique culture. It is the world’s oldest, biggest bazaar where the most variable products are exhibited. The bazaar includes more than 3 thousand shops and it is visited by approximately 400 thousand people. During the Ottoman Empire era, jewelries and precious hand-woven textiles were gathered in Grand Bazaar from all over the country to be sold, and it is a shopping paradise for the ones who especially appreciate traditional textiles and authentic jewelries.
Egyptian (Spice) Market The Spice Bazaar dates back to the Seventeenth Century. It is one of Istanbul’s oldest covered markets, where the exotic, Oriental aspect of the city still survives. At the time of its establishment, thousands of spices from nations in the Far East, such as India and Arabia, was well as curative herbs and remedies for every imaginable ailment, were sold at the Spice Bazaar. Because the majority of the products for sale in the market were imported from Egypt, it came to be known as the “Egyptian Bazaar”.
