Welcome I would like to welcome everyone to the 2013 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four here in London, where we are privileged to be hosted at an extraordinary venue, The O2, one of the best arenas in Europe. In this 12th edition of the Final Four we are sure that here in London, the Final Four will rise to a new level of excellence. It is our intention not only to be here for the Final Four, but also to enact a long-term strategy to increase the awareness of Euroleague Basketball in particular and the sport of basketball in general in the UK. CSKA Moscow, Olympiacos Piraeus, FC Barcelona Regal and Real Madrid are the four teams that will play to become Euroleague Champion, during a Final Four that is the culmination of a great season, in which all our fans have enjoyed the opportunity to watch more games between the best teams of the competition, raising the general awareness and interest in the competition in the 199 countries and territories we have reached through our TV partners, a record number in Euroleague´s history. The 2013 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four will also bring to London a large number of activities. Trafalgar Square, one of the most emblematic places in London, will host a Fan Zone where all fans will find a large range of activities like basketball courts, sports bars, basketball legends, celebrities and cheerleaders. We also have our Trophy Tour going on around the city, the 11th edition of the Nike International Junior Tournament, the EFES Euroleague Awards Ceremony, where the best players of the season will be awarded, and the Innovation in Sports Business Summit with the attendance of top industry leaders. All these activities together with the incredible touristic interest of London, one of the capitals of the world, will make the Final Four an experience that our fans will remember forever. A year on, our teams and players will collaborate with Euroleague Basketball’s Social Responsibility Program “One Team” developing different activities during the Final Four to promote sport and social development. Ettore Messina Nearly a quarter of a century has passed since Ettore Messina’s first head coaching job and, whether on the club scene or with the national team of his native Italy, his name has been synonymous with success. During his distinguished career, Messina has taken three of the four clubs he has coached to the Euroleague title game, has reached 10 Euroleague Final Fours and has won four titles, becoming the only coach in Euroleague history to win multiple titles with two different teams. As soon as he took over at Virtus Bologna, at age 30, Messina won the 1990 Italian Cup. The first of four Italian League titles came in 1993. Soon after, Messina took the reins of the Italian national team. During his five years at the helm, he led Italy to a silver medal at the 1997 European Championship. Messina’s second stint with Virtus Bologna was even more successful than the first, as they won the club’s first Euroleague title and the Italian championship in 1998, his first season back. In the following four years, Messina took Virtus Kinder Bologna to three Euroleague finals and won the continental crown again in 2001. In the same stretch, he added a second Italian League title and three Italian Cups to the club’s trophy cabinet. Messina next moved to Benetton Treviso, whom he guided to the 2003 Euroleague title game in Barcelona and the Italian triple-crown the same season before taking two more Italian Cup titles in the following years. When CSKA Moscow called in 2005, Messina took on a head coaching job outside his homeland for the first time. His four-year stay in the Russian capital fell just short of perfect. Under Messina’s tutelage, CSKA reached four consecutive Euroleague finals and won the Euroleague in 2006 and 2008. In addition, CSKA and Messina collected four Russian League titles and two Russian Cups. In the seasons that followed, Messina became head coach of Real Madrid and a consultant for the Los Angeles Lakers, before returning to Moscow this season. In London, Messina looks to rewrite the history books. Already named among the 50 greatest contributors to European club competitions by Euroleague Basketball, he aims to become only the second coach to lift the Euroleague trophy five times.

Gennadi Volnov One of the winningest players of all-time at any level, Gennadi Volnov helped CSKA Moscow to dominate European basketball throughout the 1960s. A power forward who was ahead of his time, Volnov started his career with Burevestnik in his native Moscow and joined CSKA in 1958. In a dozen seasons with the club, Volnov played a major role in leading CSKA to Euroleague titles in 1961, 1963 and 1969. Volnov averaged 15.5 points in the 1961 Euroleague finals against three-time defending champion ASK Riga, allowing CSKA to celebrate its first continental title. He had a game-high 26 points in the 1963 Euroleague final tie-break game against Real Madrid, which CSKA won 99-80. He also played 37 minutes in his team’s 103-99 double-overtime win in the 1969 Euroleague title game against Madrid. Domestically, Volnov won ten Soviet Union championships between 1960 and 1970, and his success in national team competitions makes him one of the most important players in basketball history. Volnov achieved Olympic glory with the Soviet Union by taking a gold medal in 1972 by defeating the United States in the final in Munich, silvers in Rome 1960 and Tokyo 1964 and bronze in Mexico 1968. Only one other basketball player – his former teammate Sergey Belov – has ever won four Olympic medals. He also claimed gold at the 1967 World Championship in Uruguay, a bronze in 1963 and collected six consecutive EuroBasket titles from 1959 to 1969. Volnov, who played basketball throughout his life, passed away in 2008 at age 68.

Couple those two challenges together and you get the precise situation in which Georgios Bartzokas found himself last summer, when he took over from the legendary Dusan Ivkovic on the sidelines at reigning Turkish Airlines Euroleague champion Olympiacos Piraeus. Bartzokas overcame all the pressure on him and met the increased expectations brought on by the Reds’ historic title win by guiding the team to another Final Four appearance this season. A former player whose career was cut short by injuries, Bartzokas is now in his seventh season as a head coach, having arrived in Piraeus following successful stints with three different clubs in his native Greece. His first head coaching job came in 2006, aged 41, with Olympia Larissa. As a rookie coach, Bartzokas immediately showed promise, making the Greek League playoffs in two of his three seasons in Larissa, marking the only playoff appearances in club history. Success led him to Maroussi BC, with whom he made his Euroleague debut on the sidelines. Bartzokas led the team far beyond expectations in the 2009-10 season, as Maroussi moved all the way through from the Euroleague Qualifying Rounds to the Top 16. It eventually concluded the campaign just one win away from a playoffs spot, having beaten teams like Panathinaikos Athens and Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv in the process. Bartzokas also led Maroussi to third place in the Greek League that season and was chosen as the country’s 2009-10 coach of the year. The following season he took over at Panionios Athens, whom he led to last season’s Greek League semifinals, where his team lost to Olympiacos. Since accepting the challenge at Olympiacos, his coaching methods and hard work have proven to be just as fruitful as ever, with the Reds traveling to London attempting to become only the second team in two decades to successfully defend the Euroleague crown.

Giorgos Sigalas Giorgos Sigalas was at the very heart of the teams that made up the first golden age of Olympiacos Piraeus, back in the 1990s. The shooting guard was more than just a homegrown star whom the fans identified with; his powerful frame and tremendous defensive abilities turned him into a major contributor to the Reds’ success. Sigalas, who would later earn the nickname ‘Rambo’, first joined Olympiacos’s youth teams at age 10. By the time he was 19 – after a year on loan in Papagou – Sigalas had become a key piece of the Olympiacos puzzle. Over the next seven seasons, he helped Olympiacos win five consecutive Greek League titles, from 1993 to 1997. Sigalas took Olympiacos to its first Final Four appearance in 1994, scoring 15 points in a semifinal victory against rival Panathinaikos. He also helped Olympiacos lift the Greek Cup trophy in 1994 and return to the Final Four in 1995. In 1997, Sigalas and Olympiacos had their best year, conquering a triple crown – the Euroleague, Greek League and Greek Cup titles. As team captain, he had the honor of lifting the Reds’ first Euroleague trophy, a moment seared in the memories of all Olympiacos fans. That would prove to be his last season with the club, however. Sigalas went on to play another decade for four other Greek clubs plus others in Italy and Spain. Sigalas also captained the Greek national team, for whom he played 185 games. Sigalas currently serves as the president of the Office for Culture, Sports and Youth in the Piraeus municipality.

Xavi Pascual In Game 5 of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Playoffs, Xavi Pascual notched the 100th Euroleague victory of his head coaching career. Making that feat all the more impressive, Pascual is just 40 years old and has won all those games with one team: FC Barcelona Regal. One fact sums up his impact on the club: in five full seasons as head coach, Pascual has led his team to four Final Fours, while over the previous seven seasons, Barcelona had only reached European basketball’s showcase event twice! His team’s playing style has been a blend of tough, unforgiving defense and an attack built around teamwork put to the service of the club’s super-talented stars. Pascual arrived at the club in 2004 and within two seasons promoted to the first team as an assistant coach under Dusko Ivanovic. He helped Barcelona reach the 2007 Final Four in Prague before taking over the head of the bench in 2008 and guiding the team to the Spanish League finals. Since then, he has marched the team to at least one important title in each of his full seasons as head coach. In 2009, Pascual led Barcelona to the Spanish League championship and the Final Four in Berlin. The next season, Pascual did even better as Barcelona captured the Spanish King’s Cup and the biggest honor of them all, the club’s second Euroleague trophy. At age 37, Pascual had become one of the youngest coaches ever to win the Euroleague, not to mention the first Spanish boss to lift the trophy since 1980. In recognition of his success, Pascual was named the Euroleague Basketball Alexander Gomelskiy Coach of the Year for the 2009-10 season. Despite not reaching the 2011 Final Four, Pascual helped Barcelona to win the Spanish double of league championship and Copa del Rey titles that season. In the last campaign, Barcelona defended its Spanish League crown and reached the Final Four in Istanbul while rewriting the Euroleague record book with its iron-clad defense. In fact, he was chosen by Euroleague Basketball as one of the 50 greatest contributors to European club competitions in 2008. Epi joined Barcelona’s first team in 1977 and remained there for 18 straight seasons. He was widely considered one of the best players of the 1980s and became a Spanish basketball icon in that time. Epi helped Barcelona, the only club of his career, to seven Spanish League titles and 10 Copa del Rey trophies. He also led Barcelona to its first three continental trophies. He scored 18 points to help beat Zalgiris Kaunas for the 1984 Saporta Cup title. Barcelona successfully defended the Saporta Cup in 1985, against Scavolini Pesaro, as Epi poured in 20 points. In 1987, he led Barcelona to the Korac Cup title, scoring 53 points in the two-game finals. Even though the Euroleague title is absent from his roll of honors, Epi did reach the competition’s title game three times. Pablo Laso The surname Laso has been linked to Spain’s basketball elite for longer than anyone can remember. Pepe Laso, a former Spanish national team player, was a first-division coach in the 1970s and the 1980s. His son Pablo started his professional career with Saski Baskonia – now Laboral Kutxa Vitoria – in 1984. In his 11 seasons with Baskonia, Laso helped the team take its first trophy ever, the Copa del Rey in 1995, and to reach back-to-back Saporta Cup finals in 1994 and 1995. Laso went on to play for Real Madrid, reaching the Euroleague Final Four in 1996 and winning the Saporta Cup in 1997. He later played for six more teams, including one season in Italy, in a 19-year pro career that he finished in 2003 as the Spanish League’s all-time leader in assists (2,896) and steals (1,219) – records he holds to this day. Laso has carried his own playing style into his coaching career, guiding teams that feature defensive pressure and share the ball. Laso started coaching with Castellon, in the Spanish third division, months after retiring as a player. He soon joined Valencia, but did not finish the 2004-05 season. His good work in Cantabria and San Sebastian, where he helped Lagun Aro gain promotion to Spain’s first division, led to Laso taking over Real Madrid’s bench in the summer of 2011. In his first season there, Laso marched Madrid to its first Copa del Rey title since 1993 and to the Spanish League finals. This season, Madrid has captured the attention of fans with its winning, fun-to-watch style. Laso’s team won its Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season group, finished second in the Top 16 and then orchestrated the only sweep of the playoffs. Emiliano Rodriguez Emiliano Rodriguez was one of the best European players of his generation as well as an unstoppable scorer and a gentleman like few others in basketball history. Born in 1937, Rodriguez started his career with Aismalibar, near Barcelona, and joined Real Madrid in 1960, soon taking its basketball section to new heights. Rodriguez led Real Madrid to its early European successes, winning four Euroleague titles in from 1964 to 1968 and reaching three other finals during the 1960s. Rodriguez totaled 59 points in two games against Spartak Brno to lead Madrid to its first-ever continental crown in 1964. He also won nine Spanish Cup titles and lifted 12 Spanish league trophies from 1961 to 1973. In short, Rodriguez was arguably the most successful European basketball player of the 1960s. In fact, Rodriguez averaged 23.6 points in the four Euroleague finals he won with Madrid and remains a basketball icon in Spain. Rodriguez also shined with the Spanish national team, taking part in 175 consecutive games. He played in seven EuroBaskets – earning MVP honors in 1963 – and two Olympic Games. His outstanding career matches his great sportsmanship. Upon his retirement in 1973, Rodriguez was awarded the prestigious Fair Play Award by UNESCO. He also received the FIBA Order of Merit in 1997. LOKS cheers The EFES Official Final Four dancers are the Loks, from Lokomotiv Kuban. The Loks have gained the chance to perform in London by winning the EFES Dance Square Off Contest, an on-line voting contest culminated with a live event held in Moscow, Russia, where a jury of professionals have crowned the Loks as the best European dance team of the year. The idea of LOKS was to create a young and stylish dance crew who performed both modern dance and acrobatics. After a huge advertising campaign we hired 18 dancers, skilled in different styles: popping, break dance, hip hop, vogue, jazz-funk and dancehall. Almost half of these dancers participated in international competitions and some of them are considered as top dancers in their category. This mixed crew was very well accepted by the fans of “Lokomotiv-Kuban” at the beginning of the season. It looked like everyone was waiting for winds of change in cheerleading and LOKS came at the right time.

Their shows are characterized by a perfect fusion between their rhythms and electronic music, but most of all, these drummers stand out thanks to their vibrant setting, their energetic attitude and their powerful groove.

The City of

LONDON London, being the world’s most-visited city, offers an endless amount of things to see, places to visit and experiences to live. From the infamous Buckingham Palace, Madame Tussauds or the recently renamed Elizabeth Tower (commonly known as Big Ben), to landmark sports venues such as Wembley Stadium or Wimbledon’s All-England Club. However, apart from the more traditional sites to visit, London is extremely rich with attractions serving most people’s tastes and needs. We present to you some of the classic as well as the not-so-classic attractions of the British capital.

Founded in 1753, it became the world’s first national public museum. The museum’s collection of works – amongst the largest in existence and coming from all corners of the world – is a historical representation of humankind, its story and evolution. The museum is open daily and entrance is free of charge.

Europe’s tallest Ferris wheel, The London Eye, is located on the banks of the River Thames and is the United Kingdom’s most visited paid tourist attraction. It is seen as a London landmark providing visitors with the city’s second highest public viewing point. It was open to the public in March 2000 reaching 30 million visitors within a little over 8 years. There are different ticket categories ranging from standard entrance to private capsules accompanied by dinner and champagne.

If English spring allows it, a walk through Hyde Park – one of the Royal Parks of London – is a must. The Park opens from 5:00 am until midnight all year round and is home to a variety of attractions and activities such as the concerts of the Barclaycard British Summer Time, the Diana Memorial Fountain or boating and swimming in the Serpentine River amongst many others. Hyde Park is thus an ideal place to spend a nice London spring day.

Camden Town is a district of North West London strongly associated with alternative culture and music venues as well as internationally renowned markets. On weekends, the markets attract large numbers of visitors who have the opportunity to purchase all kinds of goods such as fashion items, books, food, music, antiques and much more. Camden Town is also attractive for its buildings, its vibrant multicultural atmosphere and its live music making it a unique part of London that needs to be seen.
