LACK OF REPRESENTATION IN MOVIES BY SUAD MOHAMED

L

ack of representation in movies and books is becoming more prominent. A key thing that makes lack of representation even more appalling is whitewashing. It’s already hard enough as it is for people of color to be represented through characters in movies and it is disgusting their characters are whitewashed and given to a white actor who has a better brand image, last time i checked, butbrand image doesn’t make the character realistic and also doesn’t make the character stick to the material source, in terms of sticking to race. ing to race. A common argument against whitewashing in movies is race bending, which is becoming more common. If people of color are represented, most of the time it’s in a stereotypical narrative that enforces racism. An exam5

ple is the angry black girl narrative, which is used by people freely and they don’t see a problem with it. Do you know why? Because it’s the only representation of black women they see beside it being a negative one. This contributes to the dehumanization of black women because what ever they say is presented as overtly aggressive even when it isn’t even aggressive all because of the angry black women narrative. A variety of narratives for people of color is necessary in all types of media. Another thing is the assumption a character is white, if not specified in a book and when adapted, a white person will take the role instead of a person of color under the idea that the character is presumed to be white. People of color are not the only ones receiving lack of representation, the LGBTQIA+ community is also receiving scarcity of representation, and when they are being represented, the majority of the time it is a gay man; and gay men are normally stereotyped through the role of “ the gay best friend”, which presents gay men as accessories. They are human beings, not your accessory to Milan fashion week. Transgender representation has been increasing but sadly cis actors play trans characters. There are plenty of transgender tors in the acting community that could of taken the roles of trans characters. actors in the acting community that could of taken the roles of trans characters. Women need to be represented more, and not as the typical damsel in distress but as fierce women. An example of a woman being sidetracked for men in movies is the avengers. women. An example of a woman being sidetracked for men in movies is the avengers. Black widow is the only person who hasn’t had a movie yet except Falcon and the Maximoff twins. Everyone in the avengers has had a movie before the avengers or during the time of the avengers: Thor, Hulk, Iron Man and Captain America. Black widow is an amazing character with so much potential; it’s an injustice to see her being reduced to a nonsensical relationship (Bruce Nat). She is one of the best characters in the avengers, and in my opinion the best avenger. She has potential to inspire girls everywhere but she’s reduced to a relationship. This insinuates the only viable role of women is in relationships.tionship (Bruce Nat). She is one of the best characters in the avengers, and in my opinion the best avenger. I HAD A VISUAL FOR THIS PROJECT. I WANTED IT TO PROVE THAT THE GENDER ROLES SOCIETY HAS MADE UP HAVE NO MEANING. SO I GATHERED UP A GROUP OF FRIENDS AND WE DECIDED TO HAVE THEM SWITCH CLOTHES. THE GUYS WORE GIRLS CLOTHING, AND THE GIRLS WORE BOYS. NOBODY LOST ANY DIGNITY DURING THIS SHOOT. IN FACT, I DON’T THINK ANY OF THE MODELS FELT UNCOMFORTABLE. IT ALMOST FELT NATURAL.

“I THINK THE PHOTO SHOOT WAS GREAT AND IM SO GLAD I WAS ABLE TO BE APART OF IT. I BELIEVE GENDER ROLES ARE JUST ANOTHER CATEGORY, LABEL, OR “BOX”, OR WHATEVER ELSE YOU WANT TO CALL IT, THAT SOCIETY HAS CREATED TO RESTRICT OURSELVES AND MAKE US FEEL LIKE WE MUST ACT OR DRESS A CERTAIN WAY. WE SHOULDN’T HAVE TO DIFFERENCIATE ONE ANOTHER.” CASTRO SAID. “I THOUGHT THE SHOOT WAS A LOT OF FUN, BEING ABLE TO SHOOT WITH PEOPLE FROM ALL AROUND MIAMI WAS AMAZING. IT WAS GOOD TO BE WITH COOL PEOPLE WHO THINK LIKE YOU. IT WAS ESPECIALLY INTERESTING SEEING GUYS AND GIRLS SHOOT DOWN GENDER ROLES, PERSONALLY FOR ME THE WHOLE IDEA THAT A WOMAN NEEDING TO DRESS A CERTAIN WAY AND A GUY NEEDING TO DRESS ANOTHER WAY IS JUST RIDICULOUS. 99% OF THEE CLOTHES IN MY CLOSET ARE “BOY CLOTHING” AND I FEEL COMFORTABLE WEARING THEM. CLOTHES HAVE NO GENDER, IF YOU’RE A GUY AND YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE WEARING A SKIRT OR DRESS, BY ALL MEANS WEAR ONE!! AT THE END OF THE DAY THE ONLY PERSON WHO SHOULD BE HAPPY IS YOU!” ABBOTT SAID.

Not until recently has the term “DUFF” surfaced. The book has taken shape of movies, shirts, merchandise, books and so much more. But what does it mean? It may not apply to everyone, but to those that do identify with being someones DUFF, the realization is probably the hardest part. So without further ado, welcome to my diary! Lets start off with something that I’ve recently come to terms with. The other day I was just thinking about all of these guy friends that I once had and what I could have possibly done to have them leave my life. Boo Hoo. But then I realized, more then once they had tried to get with my friends. Then I asked myself….were they just using me to get closer to them? That’s when reality punched me right in the face. I couldn’t believe how oblivious I was! Letting myself get beat up over that was just dumb and now I could finally move on and not feel guilty of something I clearly wasn’t at fault for. I’m also not putting the blame on the guys that totally used me, after all I was the dumb one who didn’t realize they had the hots for my friends. Lesson learned. Of course, a mentality like this might cause you to rethink any future decisions you make towards friendships. Although, this shouldn’t stop you from making those decisions. Or you might not even realize until way after like I did. But sometimes things like these are inevitable and that’s understandable. Well until next time then. Love, Your favorite DUFF.
