Letter from the Editor Hello lovely readers!
I can’t quite believe that the summer holidays are almost upon us. My eldest daughter, Eden has just turned 4 (which I also can’t quite believe), so I will soon be joining the ‘school run Mum’ club as she starts her primary school this September. I feel like I blinked and then it was gone! But I can honestly say that setting up Mummy and Me Magazine was the best thing I did, because it meant that I have been around her to see her grow and blossom into the little lady she is. We have had a fun 4 years together and she is my inspiration. I now look forward to the next chapter and to spending time with Bethany and Faye while Eden has fun at school. As a new chapter starts for me, we also have a new chapter for Mummy and Me as this Autumn sees our publication evolve to a bi-monthly title. So you will next see us in August for an August-September issue! Alongside this, we are launching Mummy and Me Media and have lots of exciting plans ahead for the next 12 months - so watch this space! I hope that you enjoy this issue and have a great summer!

A Positive Test? m 5m
Pregnancy
What Happens Now? Reading a positive test is the first step in your pregnancy journey. This issue, we provide a guide for Mums-to-be on what steps to then take to begin your antenatal care and to ensure that you give your baby the best start.
So, the test result says ‘positive’ – you’re pregnant! Now what?...
T
he first thing to do is to make an appointment with your GP. It is a good idea to take a urine sample with you (preferably one from first thing in the morning if you are in the very early stages of pregnancy). Most GP receptionists will be able to supply a sample pot or most pharmacists sell them for a small charge. It is useful to know the date of the first day of your last period. This will enable your GP to identify how many weeks pregnant you are likely to be, and to calculate an estimated due date. Your GP may also give you leaflets about antenatal services and should provide you with information on how to make a ‘booking’ appointment to begin antenatal care with your local maternity unit. If you have been trying to conceive, you may have already be taking vitamins and folic acid pre-conception. During pregnancy and particularly in the first 12 weeks, it is advisable to take vitamins and 400 micrograms of folic acid. Some women have an increased risk of having a pregnancy affected by a neural tube defect and are advised to take a higher dose of 5mg of folic acid. This is also the case for women taking anti-epileptic medication. All of this should be discussed with your GP/Health Professional. At around 8-12 weeks into your pregnancy you should have your ‘booking’ appointment. This is a long and detailed appointment important in determining your overall health and to give you an opportunity Folic acid is to discuss any concerns important in you may have or ask any pregnancy, as it can questions. help prevent birth defects including spina bifida.
At your booking appointment your height and weight will be recorded and your BM.I (body mass index) calculated. A B.M.I less than 30 is desirable to avoid any problems such as Gestational Diabetes (diabetes in pregnancy). It is a good idea to have your partner present at this appointment as you will be asked details about any family illnesses that may have an impact on your pregnancy. You will also be asked questions about whether you have used drugs, you smoke or consume alcohol. Additional information or support will be offered if you answer yes to any of these.

Pregnancy You will also be asked to provide a urine sample at this appointment. The antenatal urine test is to check several things including protein or albumin which can indicate an infection requiring treatment. In addition, there will be blood tests offered. These determine your blood group (important for your records should you need to be given blood, for example if you experience heavy bleeding post birth). The blood tests will also check your Haemoglobin levels, Rhesus (Rh) factor, immunity to German measles (rubella) and other tests which will all be discussed by a health professional at the appointment. You will also be offered your first ultrasound scan which may take place at this appointment or will be booked for a separate visit. Once you get a positive pregnancy test, it is important to get yourself registered with your local maternity services. But it is also vitally important to begin, or maintain a healthy diet and exercise regime. Foods such as roast beef, green veg, boiled eggs and baked beans are great sources of iron, vitally important in pregnancy to avoid a deficiency which can lead to anemia. If you are taking an iron supplement, try taking it with a vitamin C enriched drink such as fresh orange juice. Research has shown that vitamin c assists with the body’s absorption of iron. Equally, research has shown that caffeine can reduce iron absorption. You don’t need to cut caffeine out altogether. But it is advisable to reduce your intake during pregnancy and to be aware of caffeine content. The recommended intake is not more than 300mg of caffeine a day. A mug of instant coffee or cup of tea contains around 100mg. Energy drinks contain on average around 80mg. Cans of cola and plain chocolate bars contain around 50mg, with milk chocolate slightly lower at around 25mg. Getting a positive result on a pregnancy test can make many women think about their lifestyle. If you are currently exercising, then you should be fine to continue with your usual regime. However, you should consult with your GP or midwife as more vigorous activities can carry risks in pregnancy. If you are looking at taking up an exercise regime whilst pregnant, again you should consult with your GP or midwife before

beginning any regime. Exercises such as swimming or yoga can be beneficial in pregnancy. Gentle stretches can help to prepare your body for labour. An exercise regime that you should definitely adopt is doing regular Pelvic Floor Exercises. Doing pelvic floor exercises will reduce your risk of experiencing incontinence after having your baby. The added bonus is that pelvic floor exercises can also mean increased sensitivity during sex and stronger orgasms for women. The NHS website (www.nhs.uk) offers advice on how to perform pelvic floor exercises. Another important thing to be aware of is infection. Salmonella carries risks in pregnancy, make sure eggs are thoroughly cooked until whites and yolks are solid. Avoid eating raw eggs or food made with raw egg. Ensure that all meat and poultry is cooked thoroughly and keep cooked and uncooked food separate from one another. Toxoplasmosis is also a dangerous infection in pregnancy. Wash your hands and keep cutting boards and knives clean after handing uncooked foods. Any fruit or vegetables should be washed prior to consumption. If you have to reheat food, make sure that meat and poultry are cooked thoroughly. You should avoid all types of pate, any mouldripened soft cheeses and any unpasteurised milk or foods. If you have pets, wash your hands thoroughly after handling pets. Planning on visiting a farm? You should avoid contact with sheep at lambing season and with newborn lambs too. You should also avoid emptying cat litter trays as faeces may contain an organism that can cause toxoplasmosis. If you are gardening, then you should wear gloves regardless of whether you have a cat yourself. Although there are many things to consider when you get that ‘positive’ pregnancy test, pregnancy can be a wonderful and exciting time for many women. So try to look after yourself, take time out and get a few early nights!

B
Experiences in the Womb
eing a baby means facing new experiences every day. All of which are the foundations of learning to do all the things we take for granted as a grown adult. Sensory experiences happen for your baby even before birth. At only three weeks gestation (when your baby is the size of a tiny bean) the first sense has begun - touch. As your baby grows, the uterus provides the security your baby needs. At around 26 weeks your baby will begin to open their eyes and at around the sixth month of pregnancy they are sensitive to light in the womb. At this early stage, prior to their birth, your baby is experiencing the sense of sight. When you are in the second trimester, your baby’s sense of sound is developing and some Mums like to talk, sing or play music to their baby. Some of the sounds your baby hears from within your womb will amaze you. You may find that once your baby is born, they recognise voices or familiar noises. Inside your womb, your baby hears the gushing waves of amniotic fluid and your heartbeat. These

noises (or similar sounds such as shushing) can proove to be soothing post birth. The sense of movement begins to function at five months gestation. By birth, this sense is relatively advanced but will only reach full maturity in adolescence. By the last trimester, the sensory system is quite well developed in order for your baby to be able to deal with the outside world. Although the senses begin to develop in the womb, it is only when the baby is born that they are put to the test. As a parent, it is your role to help your child explore the world around them and sensory stimulation is a fantastic way to do this. One of the first senses your baby will use and arguably the most important (particularly in those early days) is that of touch. Skin is the body’s largest organ and your baby’s skin is so fragile. From the moment your baby is born, their sense of touch kicks in. They will learn about temperature, pain, pressure and touch. The sense of touch is developed long before birth. Also playing a significant role in the mood of a baby, their intelligence and ultimately their survival. Your baby will learn to turn to feed in response to touch and skin-to-skin with your baby can help regulate their temperature and can calm baby when distressed. Talking to, singing to and touching your growing bump will all have positive effects and stimulate your baby’s senses. So sensory stimulation can begin as soon as you want it to!

Pregnancy Reviewed by Expectant Parents - Danielle & John Furber
M
y husband John and I were very excited to have a 4D HD scan to finally see our little one's face and features. I was 30 weeks and 2 days at the time of my scan, which is the optimum time as the baby still has space to move around in. Upon arrival we were greeted by the friendly and welcoming Take a Peek staff and were seen straight away. The lady who conducted the scan was extremely professional and a midwife herself, she was able to explain everything in great detail and was very informative. As we did not want to find out the sex of our baby, the lady was very sensitive to this and told us to close our eyes at a certain point should we be able to see anything. The scan was very thorough and lasted for about 15 minutes and so we had plenty of opportunities to see our baby wriggling away. She measured the baby's head, stomach and legs to give a prediction on the weight by its due date and we were able to listen to the heartbeat. After the scan was finished we had a short wait while the photos were placed onto a USB. Once ready we were able to look through all of the photos taken, at our leisure with no feeling that we needed to rush, the staff were very complimentary saying that our baby was beautiful which I thought was very kind considering they must see hundreds of different babies. We choose our favourite photos to be printed and were very impressed with the keepsake product range available including; frames, keyrings and
heartbeat teddy bears (which we were delighted to take away with us and hope will provide a familiar comforting noise to our baby once born). Overall, we had a thoroughly enjoyable experience made even more special by the kindness and professionalism of the staff and we would highly recommend the fantastic service at Take a Peek to any expectant parents looking to capture great ultrasound images.

Exper t
Each issue we will be putting YOUR questions to our panel of experts.
This issue, Children’s Sleep Expert, Andrea, addresses the concern some parents have surrounding their child having a ‘comforter’.
Is it a problem that my baby is attached to a comforter? Comfort blankets and toys are known as “transitional objects” and as the name suggests, can be very useful in helping babies and toddler make the transition from awake to asleep. They also help little ones feel more secure when separating from parents – at the nursery or crèche for example. Because a comforter helps a child to feel safe, calm and happy, its use should not be discouraged, no matter how grubby and worn it looks. If your child has a comfort object it is a healthy sign that they are growing up and learning how to cope with their independence. At least half of all babies and toddlers have a comforter, and most will choose their own object at around 6 months old and their need for the comforter is at it’s greatest between 18 months and 2 ½ years old. Babies tend to choose items with a soft texture and a familiar smell, such as a pillow case, soft toy or even mummy’s nightie! If your child doesn’t choose something of their own accord, there is no need to encourage it. Most comfort objects will not pose a danger if taken into a child’s cot as a sleep aid, but parents should discourage anything with a ribbon or cord
on it measuring more than 30cm or any toy with parts that could be chewed or sucked off and choke a child (a teddy’s eyes or nose for example). Small blankets, muslin squares, pillow cases and so on, made from natural fibres can be considered to be safe, as a child can breathe through them. Unlike dummies, comfort objects seldom get lost during the night and need finding and replacing. The main problem is if the object gets lost or left behind somewhere. If this happens it can be very distressing indeed for a child. For this reason, if you notice that your child is forming an attachment to a particular object, you should try and get hold of another identical one. Alternate their use so that each becomes equally worn and also so that one can be washed whilst the other is being used.

Bubbles’ World of Play New Brighton
M
y wife and I came up with the idea for Bubbles’ World of Play when our two children were a bit younger. They would be invited to parties in play centres and we would always talk about how they could be improved, such as making them cleaner, safer and improving the adult experience. It was because of these conversations that the ideas for Bubbles’ came along. Setting up Bubbles’ involved a lot of research. I travelled the world looking at other play centres, including visiting Florida on a Disney Institute course. They teach guest services and how to do things the ‘Disney’ way, which really helped when training the team at the centre to provide the best service possible. Our children had an impact on the design of the play centre too, particularly the slides, and they helped us in choosing the name too, so it was child-centric from the start. The big building that is the home to Bubbles’ World of Play meant we could design the largest and most innovative play frames for the centre in the UK. Children can clamber up and down the play frames for hours, exploring and learning about the world in an accessible and fun way so that they don’t even realise it’s educational. It’s also exercise in disguise! Safety and security is integral to Bubbles’. The ‘World’ theme means the entrance and welcome desk are designed like an airport waiting room and guests must ‘check in’ and ‘check out’ through a door access system, so no children are allowed to leave the play centre by themselves or without the adults they came in with. We also have a separate area for under threes, in the Central Park Zone so they can play freely, safely and their parents don’t need to worry about the bigger kids. One thing that sets Bubbles’ apart is our attention to cleanliness and hygiene. This is not always taken seriously but it is key to any children’s attraction. The centre receives a deep clean each week, commercial cleaners sanitise it daily, and
we have consistently received 5* hygiene ratings since we opened. We serve great food and drink, including Coffee Republic coffee for mums and dads that want to take a break while their children play. This was part of our mission to improve the adult experience too. It can be difficult to balance work and life, just as it is the same for parents in all jobs. My wife and I make sure to have dedicated family time each week, and I make sure to not work at Bubbles’ at the weekend so we can all spend time together – something which is made easier by having a great team on board. We take it in turns to do the school runs so our kids know they have some time and attention from us each day. We’ve just been awarded the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence so we know we’re doing the right things at Bubbles’. We’re looking to be launching an outdoor splash pool in the summer which is going to be really exciting. And as for the future, we are in the early stages to develop Bubbles’ elsewhere in the North West.

ith the Christening of Princess Charlotte this month, it is very fitting to be reviewing a brand that make exquisite lovingly hand-crafted, beautifully designed Christening gowns and outfits. Okika (Hawaiian for Orchid) is an English company, who offer a unique range of elegant traditional Christening gown designs. With the range covering; long Christening gowns, girls Christening dresses and boys Christening outfits, there is something to suit everyone. To add a finishing touch, Okika also offer beautifully crafted Christening accessories such as bonnets, frilly Christening bloomers, lace ribbon booties and boys Christening hats. With a background in Wedding dress design, the team behind Okika offer a professional service, using only the finest materials; ivory silk lined with quality synthetic lining, finishing touches of Nottingham lace and their specialist Hand Beading. The gowns produced by Okika truly are fit for a princess or prince and are beautiful traditional pieces that can be handed down through the generations. With many high-street stores producing ‘shop made’ Christening gowns, it is a true pleasure to browse the range on offer by Okika as it is clearly evident from the imagery online how much attention to detail and craftsmanship goes into creating each individual piece. Their online shop at www.okika.co.uk allows you to browse in the comfort of your own home and their helpful staff are only an email away to answer any queries you may have. part was deciding which of the many beautiful designs I wanted!). Christening dresses start from just £110, Christening gowns from £120, boys Christening outfits from £95 and accessories from just £25. The website offers a sizing guide. Gowns are 2cm larger than on the menus to allow for ease and growth before your order arrives. As items are individually made, 1-2 weeks notice is required for ordering. Okika deliver worldwide and their website accepts all major credit or debit cards. When the order arrived, I was bowled over by how beautiful everything was. From the presentation and packaging through to the gown and accessories themselves. Okika had enclosed information on how to care for the gown, which I found very useful to ensure that the delicate materials were cared for properly, especially as the gown will most definitely become an heirloom passed down to my Grandchildren in the future. On our daughter’s special day, she felt very comfortable in the gown and even kept the accessories on too! (Always a bonus as a Mummy). Faye looked absolutely beautiful in her Grace Gown, V Lace Ribbon Christening Booties and Lace Trim Christening Bonnet from the Okika range. All of our family and friends commented on how beautiful the gown was and how lovely it was to see something traditional in design. I cannot recommend Okika enough for their beautifully designed Christening outfits and fantastic service. Mum’s the word:
It’s a family affair for award-winning photography duo
amily-owned businesses traditionally involved fathers and sons, but the number of women-owned businesses is on the increase and a new entrepreneurial pairing is emerging: motherdaughter businesses. Local entrepreneur Georgina Humphrey is the perfect example of how ‘keeping it in the family’ can reap commercial success. She has built, together alongside her mother Sue, a thriving portrait photography business based in Frogatt, Derbyshire. Together as ‘Bundles of Joy Photography’ the mother and daughter duo capture heartwarming images of newborn babies, aged less than three weeks old, photographing them at their home-based studio; a picture-perfect rural setting within the Peak District, complete with roaring hearth fire and country cottage detailing. Having now won multiple industry awards for their newborn portraits, Georgina and Sue are developing a reputation for excellence. Georgina works behind the camera, having been a professional photographer ever since leaving school. Sue, a mother of four, assists by handling the babies – using her parenting experience to help create a calm, relaxed and safe working environment – settling them 15:37 and helping them BundlesOfJoy_June15 29/6/15 Page 1 into position, and also providing crucial hands-
on support to ensure the safety of the sleeping newborns during the photo-shoots. Although the business was initially setup by Georgina alone, Sue became involved very soon afterwards and the working relationship between the mother and daughter pairing is now intrinsic to the business’ success. Georgina says, “I would really struggle without mum’s help. The work involved in a newborn photoshoot is considerable and the job lends itself to two people working together.” She continues, “As well as the hands-on help, mum also provides a great deal of support and advice, and the success of the business is truly a result of us working well together, as a team. We couldn’t imagine not working together now! Thankfully we get on brilliantly, and complement each other’s skillsets.” Georgina said: “We are already taking bookings for 2016 and are getting busier all the time with clients are coming from all over the UK, not just from the immediate local area. It’s wonderful that parents are becoming aware of our work and are prepared to travel to get similar images of their newborns.” For more information visit www.bundlesofjoybygeorgina.co.uk or call 07973 939522.

SUMMER HOLS WITH THE TROOPS!
A
s the summer holidays rapidly approach (where does the term go? Ahem) thoughts in our base camp are already turning to activities to entertain and engage our troopers. But it’s not just about what to do with the troopers in the school holidays. It’s about how to do it. Preparation and Planning Prevent Poor Parental Performance after all. I’m always a bit mystified when people use the term ‘planned like a military operation’ as a form of criticism. A military operation is about moving people and resources from A to B to achieve the specified objective. As a dad with three troopers, I plan every activity like a military operation. And school holidays are no exception. Here’s a few tips from me: Don’t Overstretch the Unit Don’t commit the unit to too many missions. Hyper scheduling makes life difficult - and exhausting - for all of you. It’s not quantity of activity that counts, it’s quality. The most engaging and entertaining thing for all your troopers - even older ones - is your undivided attention. If you are stressed out about transporting troops from one activity to another, then they’re not going to be able to benefit from time with you. Plan your activities beforehand. If you’re staying at home, check out the internet and local papers - you’ll be amazed what’s on nearby (and usually for free). If a big day out (theme park etc.) is planned, then let the next day be a lazy one, spending time together in the house or garden. You’ll need time to relax and recover together. Don’t tell you troopers everything you have planned. Then not only do you not have to deal with disappointments when plans change, but also you’ll have a few surprises up your sleeve. When
planning activities, as in life, it pays to under promise and over deliver. Improvise, Adapt and Overcome Always have a ‘rainy day’ activity or two for when the inevitable happens. One of my favourites is drawing the curtains, getting some popcorn and a film on and having a bit of a ‘matinee’. When my troopers were younger, we’d get suited and booted and go and have competitions about who could jump in the most puddles. Another cracker was building an indoor den with a sheet over the back of the sofa. The key is to join in. The troopers will love it. Transporting - and Entertaining - your Troops. I know it sounds obvious, but once you’ve planned your means of transportation, you need to plan how you are going to entertain your troops. Know your enemy - and the enemy is boredom and frustration. For example, if you’re going to be on a long car journey don’t pack the very noisy toy to entertain your trooper - unless it can be muted - as it will fray your nerves and shorten your flash to bang time. Spotting games are brilliant and require no special equipment. A particularly good one is ‘Mini Cheddar’ where spotting a Mini is 10 points, a yellow car is five points and a yellow Mini (or Mini cheddar) is 25 points. The first one to 100 wins. Save the arguments by allowing one ‘unconfirmed’ sighting (i.e. one that only the spotter can see - normally a Mini cheddar by some strange coincidence). My troopers are now 10, nine and five and we are still playing this game. I actually got the highest score of all time by spotting a cheddar Mini Clubman in Malta, but I’m not big headed about it. Spotting games are also great for all forms of public transport, as are all the songs from our own childhood: The Wheels on the Bus, 10 Men went to Mow, 10 Green Bottles etc.
If you’ve got any other tips, please share them with me – and other dads – on the Commando Dad forums: commandodad.com/forum You can also follow me on Twitter @commandodad
Let’s Go Fly a (Homemade) Kite... An Army Marches on its Stomach - a hungry trooper is an unhappy trooper. Take packed lunches, or picnics, even if you are going somewhere where food is on sale. There are multiple reasons for this: - The time spent making a packed lunch is much MUCH shorter than the time you will spend in the queue, waiting to be served food. - I guarantee it. It puts you in control of what your troopers eat. It’s more convenient as you can eat where and when is best for your family unit. - It’s cheaper. Don’t get me wrong, if you have the money to spend, then please spend it as the economy needs it. But when you’re out and about, food, and especially drinks, can work out to be very expensive (especially when you have a lot of troopers, like me). - Take snacks. It’s a universally acknowledged fact that 10 minutes outside the safety of base camp, troopers will be hungry. Embrace this and plan accordingly. Pack snacks that are suitable for eating on the move. Good options are oatcakes, nuts (allergies permitting), carrot sticks and low fat crisps (as a treat). You could make your own trial mix: seeds, chopped dried fruit and nuts, and some chocolate chips mixed in. - The best fruit for snacks is an apple in my experience - bananas and berries get mashed and oranges require you to find a bin to get rid of the peel, and something to wash sticky juice off hands and faces.

For little ones, it's much more fun to fly a kite they’ve made themselves than a shop bought one. Here's how to make one... 1. Form a cross from slender sticks, fastening them together with string. 2. Draw the string from the center to the top of the vertical stick and tie it. 3. Then stretch the string from there to all the other ends. 4. Cover everything with light paper and tape it on. 5. Make small holes and draw thin pulling cord above and on both sides of the crossbars. 6. Don't forget the ears and tail of your kite, which will hold it in balance when the wind carries it. To make the tail of the kite, tie ribbons (tied) about every 4 inches down the string of the kite. Tie one ribbon on each ear of the kite. For great tips and more creative ideas visit

- Make sure you have water, and plenty of it. Get the troopers water bottles that can be refilled. I usually fill them up with squash when we leave base camp, but all refills after that are water. So there’s my top tips, but I’m always looking for new ones to add to the armoury especially as my troops are getting older. So, if you’ve got any tips you could share with me, please let me know.
