Regular readers of Mummy and Me may have noticed that this issue came out a week into February? I’m delighted to say that the reason behind this was that I went into labour early and beautiful Aimée Hope Thompson arrived weighing 7lb 1oz. Aimée is my fourth girl and joins big sisters; Eden (4 years), Bethany (3 years) and Faye (18 months) who are all thrilled with their new baby sister. Aimée features on the cover of this month’s magazine, photographed by the very talented Kellie Wilson at Wilson K Photography. Visit www.wilsonkphotography.co.uk for more information on her newborn photography sessions.
I’m really excited to bring you this issue of Mummy and Me in partnership with The Baby & Toddler Show in Manchester 11-13th March. If you don’t have your ticket yet, be sure to log online at www.babyandtoddlershow.co.uk and use code NBT24 for 1/3 off your ticket price from us! Be sure to enter our fantastic competition from Metanium and our Alternative Easter Egg competition for over £450 worth of prizes.

Pregnancy
Monitoring your baby’s movements in pregnancy
E
very pregnancy is different, so it is important for you to be in tune with your own pregnancy (whether that be your first, second, third...) and for you to get to know your unborn baby. During pregnancy it is important that you attend routine check-ups which will help monitor your baby’s well-being (and of course your own). Something that all pregnant women can do is monitor their babies movements. The movements of your baby are an important sign of your baby’s wellbeing. Movements can usually be detected from around 16 weeks beginning as ‘fluttering’ sensations until your baby gets big enough for you to feel full kicks, turns, jabs and punches. At around 24 weeks, your baby is big enough for you to expect to feel regular movements on a daily basis. The Royal College of Midwives guideline (and what you will hear from your midwife) is that you should be feeling 10 movements within a space of 12 hours. If the placenta is at the front of the uterus or you are very overweight, you may find it more difficult to detect movements. There are times in the day when your baby will be asleep and you will not feel them move. Towards full term, babies sleep more often, but it is very rare that your baby will sleep for more than an hour at a time. It is commonly noted that babies are most active in the evening or early morning. Most pregnant women notice the majority of movements during the evenings when they are most rested. (Movements can often also be felt after eating sugary snacks or drinking a glass of cold water or fizzy drinks – useful for reassurance checks or before a scan but not advisable to use on a regular basis however as it is important to have a good balanced diet). A reduction in movements can mean that the baby is not well in the womb, it is therefore of
vital importance that you know what is usual for your baby, so that you are aware when there is a reduction in movements. If you feel something isn’t right, you must contact your midwife immediately so that you can get prompt care by an experienced obstetrician. This will usually involve being monitored by a cardiotachograph (CTG) monitor at hospital. It is important that you understand that you will never be seen as ‘bothering’ health professionals by asking for checks to be made. Your concerns over your baby’s movements are important (who else are they able to tell?) and you should not delay in asking for advice. Visit www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk for further information, and for advice and support visit www.kickscount.org.uk a charity aiming to empower mums-to-be with knowledge and confidence.

Comfortable Upright Birth
Better for mum, better for baby. Introducing the Comfortable, Upright Birth (CUB) support... If you have recently been to any antenatal classes, hospital tours or even been online you may have noticed the latest product designed for use during birth; if not you soon will because the CUB is now used in more than half of all maternity hospitals and birth centres in the UK as well as in countries from Iceland to Australia, the USA and China. Birthsparks are the creators and global distributors of the award winning CUB that is now the most widely used, innovative product to reach the healthcare maternity market in recent years. We are delighted to announce that the CUB is now available for mothers who want to ensure they have access to a CUB during pregnancy to help them have the safer, healthier birth that they want.
So what is it? The CUB is a cross between a birth ball and a birth stool; designed by a midwife to provide comfortable support for mothers who want to maximise their chance of a natural, active birth by using upright positions.
What does the CUB do? The CUB allows the mother to adopt and maintain positions that are not only the most comfortable but physically the most helpful for her and her baby during labour, making giving birth easier, faster and most importantly, safer. Upright positions during birth (sitting, kneeling, squatting, all fours) has been the topic of much research in recent years, and the results of the research are dramatically in favour.
Being upright during labour and birth can
increase the space within the mother’s pelvis by up to 30%, allowing more room for the baby to be born. Labour contractions can be more effective making labour shorter, babies are 54% less likely to become distressed and mothers are a whopping 29% less likely
to need an emergency caesarean section! For mothers who are choosing
to give birth naturally having their own CUB will ensure they can use these really beneficial positions whenever they want.

A really useful addition for the birth room
In light the extensive research in favour of Upright Birthing, the CUB was launched at the International Confederation of Midwives Triennial Congress in June 2014, to instant success. It’s now being added to maternity units across the globe as women strive for an easier, safer and more comfortable way to bring their babies into the world. To date the CUB has been sold into over 40 different countries worldwide and is rapidly becoming the new, must have item to support mothers through childbirth. Feedback from Mothers, Midwives and Obstetricians has been incredible and sales are growing daily, not only in the UK but from many countries worldwide. The CUB can be used by mothers at home in late pregnancy to encourage baby to adopt an ideal position for birth as well as throughout labour as a comfortable support, either to sit on, rest on or lean over as well as to give birth to the baby on if they so choose. The CUB is suitable for use in maternity hospitals, birth centres or at homebirths and it is available for mothers to buy for themselves as well as healthcare facilities who wish to offer a more natural approach to giving birth to their mothers.

T his Valentines, Love your body...!
M
any women worry about their potential weight gain during pregnancy. At your first antenatal appointment, the health professional will make a note of your weight. If you are heavily over or very under weight for your height, then they are likely to discuss any concerns. Your Midwife or GP is likely to have special advice for you if you weigh in excess of 100kg (15.7stone) or less than 50kg (7.8stone), however this is a general guideline and your height/BMI should be considered.
Gaining too little weight can also cause problems. It can mean that your body is not storing enough fat, a baby with a low birth weight or problems such as premature birth. This said, a naturally slim woman may stay quite slim during their pregnancy and have a perfectly healthy baby.
Weight gain in pregnancy varies from woman to woman. The NHS website states that most pregnancies see a weight gain between 8kg and 14kg (1.26stone (17.5lb) and 2.2stone (30lb)), putting on most of the weight after week 20. The weight gain is not just your growing baby, placenta growth and amniotic fluid. Your body also begins to store fat in preparation for the production of breast milk once your baby is born.
The old phrase of “you’re eating for two” is considered an old myth. Whilst there may be days were you feel extremely hungry, you certainly shouldn’t be increasing your calorie intake by more than an additional 300* calories a day (*suggested guideline). Staying active is also important during pregnancy as this enables your body to prepare for labour. Unless you have been otherwise advised by your midwife or GP, you can keep up your normal daily activities or exercises.
Putting on too much weight can affect your health and can increase the risk of complications. Too much glucose (sugar) in your blood during pregnancy can lead to gestational diabetes and the added risk of having a large
So, this Valentines, fall in love with your pregnant body. Pregnancy is a special time, so; tune into your body, admire those curves in the mirror and walk with confidence because you are beautiful!

ello Baby based in Thatto Heath, St.Helens is the Northwest’s Premier Baby Scan Boutique offering 2D, 3D and 4D black and white or full colour scans. Expectant Mothers can visit Hello Baby from as just 7 weeks gestation when they can catch a glimpse for an early reassurance scan. Sexing Scans are available from 15 weeks gestation with a 99.9% accuracy rate. All scans are performed by highly qualified sonographers and ultrasound specialists. Hello Baby was established over 4 years ago and is registered with the Care Quality Commission. They are proud to say that they have received 99% positive feedback and want every customer who visits to have a memorable, fantastic experience. Early pregnancy scans are from 7-12 weeks gestation. Appointments typically last around 10 minutes and will enable you to see your baby at this early stage estimating your due date using a trans-abdominal probe. Sexing scans are available in 2D or 3D and typically last around 15 minutes. These can be booked any time from 15 weeks and as the name suggests, this is a scan to determine the sex of your baby. This is a
wonderful bonding experience, not only for the expectant Mother, but also for their birth partner and any family members who wish to accompany them on their visit. During late pregnancy, Mummy and Me Magazine Founder & Director, Michelle Thompson, attended a bonding scan at Hello Baby and commented; “Hello Baby offers a relaxed environment with patient sonographers who take time and care to ensure that you have a wonderful experience. For ‘shy’ or ‘naughty’ babies who cover their face during bonding scans, or cross their legs during sexing scans, staff offer advice on movements you can do that can encourage your baby to move into a better position enabling them to capture wonderful images of your baby opening their eyes, smiling or sucking their thumb. I was highly impressed with the service offered and would definitely recommend Hello Baby to any expectant parent wanting a private baby scan”.

O
n your journey through life as a parent, you feel so many emotions. Amazing joy and euphoria, panic, doubt, love and an overwhelming sense of the need to do the right thing for your little one. When you first have your baby there are different methods of parenting, and you will have probably decided which way to follow, and change your mind a few times along the way. When parents contact me on my website it's usually because they don't know where to turn and just need some answers. They start to feel so exhausted through lack of sleep, they feel guilty as they aren't enjoying their baby. And the wonderful family life they envisaged is slowly crumbling. Write a 48 feeding and sleeping log The first thing I ask these parents to do is to write down their babies feeding and sleeping times for 48 hours. Sometimes this in itself can be a Eureka moment! They start to understand their baby better, and can start things back on the right track. Another important thing for your baby is having regular nap times in the day. This will encourage better night sleeps, this is because one of the main reasons babies wake often in the night is if they are overtired. Introduce a good bedtime routine Having a good bedtime routine can also help your baby sleep better. Babies work on a 12 hour day and 12 hour night. So as long as you stick to that rule your baby won't be overtired at bedtime.

Always have calm/quiet time before bedtime. So no TV, noisy flashing toys. This will start to help you and your baby have a proper wind down time. Then once your baby has had their bath then stay in the room they will be sleeping in. Get their pj's on and feed them in very low lights. From 5 months you can introduce a story before the feed. I hope this helps you. If you need more support I offer email and Skype packages and we also have Gentle Sleep Trainers, Night Nannies and Maternity Nurses to help you teach your little one to love sleep.

Down Syndrome
onday 21 March 2016 marks the 11th anniversary of World Down Syndrome Day. Around 775 babies are born with the condition each year in England and Wales. There are over 40,000 people in the UK with the condition. Each year the voice of people with Down syndrome, and those who live and work with them, grows louder. Down Syndrome International encourages our friends all over the world to choose your own activities and events to help raise awareness of what Down syndrome is, what it means to have Down syndrome, and how people with Down syndrome play a vital role in our lives and communities.
Once again in 2016, we invite everyone across the world to wear LOTS OF SOCKS on 21 March to get people talking about WDSD. Last year, thousands of you supported World Down Syndrome Day (21 March 2016) by wearing your Lots of Socks socks. We even received a photo of a certain Prince Harry and the England Rugby team supporting WDSD with their socks! This year, we want to go bigger and better! LOTS OF SOCKS logo socks and t-shirts, together with WDSD t-shirts, will be available from the WDSD Merchandise online shop See more at: worlddownsyndromeday.org and www.downs-syndrome.org.uk

armalade Skies Tea Rooms is a child-friendly café just a stones throw from Penny Lane in Liverpool. Focusing on play-space, homemade food and artisan coffee, Marmalade Skies has quickly become a popular destination for countless local families. Co-owner and mother of two Becky told us how this exciting café came to be… “I had the idea for a child friendly cafe when my little boy became mobile. It became difficult to meet friends for a coffee without feeling that the push-chair was in the way, or that we were getting on people’s nerves with my incredibly cute but rather wriggly toddler! Whilst soft play is great for bigger kids it’s not always ideal for younger toddlers and often not a pleasant environment for adults. We want to offer somewhere aimed at the pre-school age range that mums and dads can enjoy too. My business-partner Julie and I love baking and prepare much of the food at Marmalade Skies ourselves, sourcing local businesses wherever possible. We love trying out different cakes and treats, all created inhouse or from another local Mumpreneur, Becky at Cupcake Couture. When my kids were younger I often ended up taking little pots of fruit, rice-cakes and other snacks out with me, as I knew most cafes would have nothing on the menu they would eat. It’s really important that Marmalade

Skies provide a wide variety of healthy food options on our kid’s menu, catering for all dietary requirements. We didn’t want to go down the “chicken-nuggets & chips” route! That’s where the idea of the ‘pick and mix’ menu came in. Parents can pick what they know their child likes and choose either 3,4 or 5 items depending on appetite. Our Kids Meal Deal has a bit of everything and is really great value for older children. We both have young children ourselves. I have two children, Jack (5) and Archie (3), and Julie has Robyn (1). Being honest, we don’t have much of a work/life balance right now. Obviously starting a business is hard but at least when our kids come to work they get to play they all love the cafe! In the future we’re adding to our weekly event schedule. Our range of classes currently include pre-school Spanish, French and “Sing & Sign” classes, Ukelele Club plus a free BAMBIS drop in session. We’re also perfecting new Party Packages which offer private hire of the cafe on weekends and smaller parties in our beautiful function room.” Find out more about Marmalade Skies on facebook, or contact Becky & Julie directly at marmaladeskiestearooms @gmail.com.

T
umble Tots, Britain’s leading physical play programme for children, has been the springboard to developing children’s skills for life for more than quarter of a century. I first started taking Bethany to Tumble Tots sessions shortly before turning 2 years old. Bethany, like many toddlers was often unsteady on her feet and unlike her very outgoing sisters, she also lacked in confidence. Over the past year, I have witnessed firsthand, how my own child has benefitted from the Tumble Tots programme. Her balance and coordination has greatly improved and she has thoroughly enjoyed every moment of her Tumble Tots journey so far. She has also grown in her confidence and has made some lovely little friends at the sessions too! A lot of this confidence has come from her being able to learn new abilities, face new obstacles and challenges, and in feeling part of something special when she puts on her yellow Tumble Tots T Shirt. Bethany graduated from the Walking to 2 years programme and has now moved to the 2 to 3 years programme, she will soon be graduating to the 3 years to school age sessions. The programme starts with Gymbabes for babies 6 months to walking, then moves on to offer different equipment as your child learns to walk and to encourage them to climb, jump and roll. Previous sessions when she was younger had an exploratory approach to allow your child to learn at their
Bethany’s younger sister Faye is now a Tumble Tot too and is enjoying her sessions just as much as her sister. Tumble Tots offers sessions right up to school age and then a programme called Gymbobs for up to 7 year olds. Both Bethany and Faye are thoroughly enjoying their Tumble Tots journey and I look forward to seeing their development as we continue with the programme.

A Handy Checklist
Your guide to
Car Seat Safety &
You need to find a seat that’s right for your child, as well as your car. It’s also important to continue using it correctly as they grow. So here’s our simple checklist to help you on your way. Measure your child: Their height and weight are more important than their age.
Product Recommendations
Group 0+ car seats A Group 0+ car seat is suitable from birth, in fact you are unable to leave the hospital without one if you are travelling by car! Group 0+ car seats offer good protection for your tiny baby and are essential for every car journey you make with your new addition. Some Group 0+ carseats are compatible with your pram as part of a travel system. Group 0+ car seats can be fitted either by an additional isofix base of with the car’s seat belt.
Mummy and Me recommended... The BeSafe Izi Go was designed
with safety and comfort in mind. BeSafe iZi Go X1 baby car seat is compatible with a wide range of the most popular pushchairs in accordance with Standard EN1888. Please refer to our stroller list found at carseat.co.uk. BeSafe iZi Go X1 baby car seats can be installed with ISOfix. BeSafe iZi Go X1 baby car seat comes with easy multiple height adjustment as the baby grows and clever magnets to hold open the 5-point harness for easy access. Installation is easy, reducing the chances of incorrect fitting.
Research: Look carefully into different car seats. Try before you buy: Sit your child in a seat and try it in your vehicle before buying. Check you’re using it correctly: Read the instructions for a guide on your car type and child’s size. Switch off airbags: If your child is riding in the front or better still put them in the back. Know your seat inside out: Watch product videos on the company websites or on YouTube. Adjust as they grow: Adjust the harnesses and headrest every 6 months for the first 4 years, then annually from 4 to 12 years.
Carseat
£169.99 (Isofix Base also available)
Reviewer comments: This car seat offers fantastic support for my newborn. The ISOfix base makes it easy to transport my baby and from the car.. The seat is lightweight for transporting, but very sturdy offering reassurance on safety.
Group 0+, 1, 2 & 3 car seats The latest development in car seats, are seats which grow with your child from birth right through to 12 years. Although some can be a little pricey, long-term they can save a small fortune as you don’t need to purchase car seats to suit each stage of your child’s development. They simply extend and grow as your child does.
Mummy and Me recommended... Joie Has It Covered At Every Stage The New Car Seat Suitable From Birth To 12 Years
Double check the anchor points: Should your seat come out be extra-careful putting it back. Don’t upgrade too soon: Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to know when the time is right.

As part of Joie’s range of extended rearward facing child seats, the Every Stage™ can be used rear facing up to 18kg/4 years and converts to a forward facing seat from 9kg to 36kg/12 years. It has five recline positions; one rear facing and four forward facing. Guard Surround Safety™ side impact protection panels add extra layers of security, while the reinforced steel inner seat shell increases structural integrity upon impact, meaning Joie has designed this seat to be as safe as possible. As with all Joie products, the Every Stage car seat is feature rich and includes a one-hand, ten position height adjustable headrest, grow-with-me infant and toddler inserts that are customisable for an ultimate fit at every stage, and a custom Harness Hideaway compartment that stores the 5-point harness for booster mode. The Grow Together™ multi-height headrest and harness system adjusts simultaneously and requires no re-threading of the harness. Side ventilation, mesh storage pockets, and deluxe cushioning and fabrics ensure a cosy ride every time. Available in a range of colours: Eclipse, Two Tone Black, Urban and Salsa. Reviewer comments: This car seat is a fantastic investment as it will grow with my child without having to purchase further car seats or any additional accessories. As this is a new product, my child is now 18 months, but we would definitely have purchased this from birth. The recline position and additional insert make it a perfect way to transport your baby home from hospital. My 18 month old still falls asleep in the car, so the recline position is great to ensure that their head doesn’t drop and cause discomfort. I would definitely recommend this car seat.
Group 1 car seats
A Group 1 car seat is suitable from 9 to 18kg (around 9 months through to 4 years in age).
Mummy and Me recommended... CasualPlay Q-Retraktor Fix
Carseat Around
£270-300
The Q-Retraktor Fix harnesses are always a perfect fit for your baby’s body, with no slack, quickly and easily. Thanks to its exclusive and innovative automatic harness which acts like an adult seat belt. A retractor has been included in the harness of a child car seat for the first time. Finally, the harness tightens automatically and locks in the event of impact or sudden movement, ensuring 100% safety in any situation.
Group 2-3 car seats As your child grows, they still require maximum protection when travelling in the car. A Group 2-3 car seat (suitable from 15 to 36kg) is ideal from around 4 years through to the age of 12 when they are no longer required to be in a car seat. Continuing to use a car seat is important for your child’s safety and a high-backed car seat ensures that the seat belt is kept in the correct position across your child’s body and offers extra protection in any impact. Booster seats do not offer this and leading child safety brand Britax has launched its 2015 ‘Bin the Booster’ awareness campaign. View the Britax Crash Test video on YouTube. Halfords have also launched a ‘Safer Seat Campaign’ encouraging anyone with a cushion booster to trade it in and receive 20% off selected highback boosters. For more information visit www.halfords.com
Top Safety Tips • Britax ‘Bin the Booster’ campaign encourages you to purchase a high-backed booster for additional safety and protection for your 4-12 year old. • Remove your child’s Winter coat! Your child’s seat straps should be securely fitted to their chest which is not the case when they are wearing a winter coat. Use a blanket or car seat swaddle to keep them warm in the car.
Carseat Around
£99.99
Mummy and Me recommended... Multi-award winning Diono Monterey2 is a full-featured, expandable high-back booster seat designed to fit a growing child up to 160cm and 36kg. The adjustable head rest and deep, aluminum reinforced sides are lined with energy absorbing EPS foam for side impact protection and the reinforced seat bottom provides extra lap belt safety. *Please note that our recommendations are based on our reviewers putting these car seats to the test. Please refer to your product instruction booklet or contact the Manufacturer with any queries you may have.

METHOD Mix the cream cheese, finely chopped chives and seasoning and put in a small piping bag. Trim leaves of spring onions to look pretty and remove root. Carefully push skewers up through base of spring onion so that they are hidden all the way

Your CO alone is going through the intense physical and emotional experience and your job is back up support. How you give that support is personal to you and your CO. If she feels that she doesn’t want you there, for whatever reason, then you have to respect that. You have to endeavour to reduce her stress and anxiety as much as possible so that she can focus 100% on the job in hand. If you feel that you may experience significant 1 17/02/2016 21:36 problems being in the delivery room throughout all of labour – for example if you

have problems at the sight of blood – then discuss this with your CO beforehand. If you are stressed and anxious, you won’t be helping her. Only one person is usually allowed in the delivery room with your CO, and she may wish to arrange for a friend or relative to be there for part or all of the labour. One thing I would say to all Commando Dads with a deployment date imminent, is that all the plans you make beforehand are exactly that, just plans. They may need to change to keep pace with fast moving events. Certain facilities may not be available, or there may be complications, or your CO may simply change her mind about what she wants, as is her prerogative. Even if your CO is adamant she doesn’t want you there, you need to be as close to the delivery room as possible, just in case.

COMMANDO DAD TOP TIP Decide beforehand if you’re going to be in the delivery room or not. If either of you have any reservations, the time to discuss them is not between contractions.

COMMANDO DAD TOP TIP Be aware that, as first-time parents, you and your CO are going to meet people who want to share their nightmare scenarios of labour – in detail. Where possible, try to focus on your own journey rather than reflecting on their’s. The fact is every birth is different. As a dad to three troopers I can testify that no two births are the same.
If you’ve got any other tips, please share them with me – and other dads – on the Commando Dad forums: commandodad.com/forum You can also follow me on Twitter @commandodad

n an age of technology, it is important to remember the value of reading to your child and encouraging them on their reading journey too. With so many fantastic authors and their wonderful stories, books such as; ‘The Gruffalo’ by Julia Donaldson, ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ by Michael Rosen, ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’ by Judith Kerr, ‘Dear Zoo’ by Rod Campbell and ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle, are just some of the favourites most young children have in their collection. World Book Day takes place on 3rd March 2016. It is a day of celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it’s a celebration of reading. If your child is at Nursery, Pre-school or Primary, they may already have plans to dress up as your favourite character from a book or to hold a book sale. However, we would like to encourage you to use World Book Day to engage in reading with your child.
them to enjoy not collecting dust on the shelf. See if your child can recognise any letters or words. Using phonics sounds will aid their learning at school (for help with this visit www.oxfordowl. co.uk/home/reading-owl/experthelp/what-is-synthetic-phonics). We can all recall books we enjoyed as a child, now you can pass on that enjoyment to your own children. For resources, information and offers, visit

It doesn’t have to cost a fortune to build your child’s library, you could; ask friends with older children if they have any books their child has outgrown that they can pass on, register your child with your local library and pick up bargain books in charity shops/nearly new sales or fairs. As your child gets older, find familiar books and encourage them to run through the story for you. You could also take pauses as you read to encourage them to fill in the words. Although it is wonderful to have favourite stories, encourage your child to explore new books. Make books easily accessible for WWW.MUMMYANDMEMAGAZINE.CO.UK
