Pregnancy
Nesting for the Newborn
I
t is completely natural for the news of a new arrival to inspire you to get your home prepared for your new baby. Many expectant Mums experience a ‘nesting instinct’. You will even witness this in nature, for example; expectant rabbits, mice and other rodents will build themselves a nest of straw lined with hair plucked from their body to provide a sheltered and comfortable place to give birth. Domestic cats may bring items of clothing or other materials into their bed. This maternal instinct is regulated by the hormonal actions of estradiol, progesterone and prolactine. The nesting instinct usually begins in the final weeks of pregnancy and is often accompanied by a much welcomed surge of energy levels to enable to get your home shipshape for your new baby. Partners may also experience this nesting instinct and you should certainly take advantage of this, as it is not advisable to be climbing up step-ladders, and you should be aware of which paints are safe to use in pregnancy. Many parents-to-be find picking out items to decorate their new babies room an enjoyable experience. However, it is worth pointing out that it is recommended that your baby sleeps in the same room a you for the first six months - so you have a little bit of time to get things sorted. If you don’t feel the need to decorate, you may still get the urge to clean and once you get the ‘cleaning bug’ you may not be able stop! This is a great opportunity to look at baby-proofing your home considering things such as covers on sockets and making cleaning products out of reach. It is also a good idea to look at making changes that will enable day-to-day cleaning to be quick and easy once baby arrives. You may consider storage space as baby’s come with a lot of baby paraphernalia! It may also be worth investing in some of the great cleaning products on the market that making cleaning much easy and provide a clean environment for your new baby.

W
hen it comes to keeping fit in pregnancy there’s a lot of information out there. In fact, there’s so much information – much of it contradicting what is said elsewhere – that it makes it hard for mums-to-be to really know what to believe and follow and what to ignore and dismiss. Here, Dr Jo Helcké busts a few pregnancy fitness myths. Q. Is it true that pregnancy exercise should be gentle? A. Not necessarily. It really depends on the individual, their pregnancy and also their pre-pregnancy fitness levels and regime. If, for example, your body has been used to very intensive exercise prior to pregnancy, everything is progressing well with no contradications, and you feel that you have good energy levels, then it is perfectly possible for you to exercise at a moderate level of intensity. Just remember that a fit person’s “moderate” will be very different from an inactive person’s “moderate”. Q. I hear a lot about yoga being the best form of exercise for pregnancy: is that the case? A. There are many forms of exercise which are great for pregnancy and it is not really a case of “one size fits all”. To a large extent you can and should be dictated by what forms of exercise you truly love doing just so long as they are not risky (contact sports and dangerous activities) and your pregnancy is healthy. So, for example, if you are a seasoned runner and your mood is uplifted by the great outdoors, then carrying on with some gentle jogging for as long as feels comfortable and good, can only be a positive thing. Having said this, there is no doubt that certain forms of exercise are particularly beneficial when expecting: swimming and waterbased exercise will give you a feeling of lightness in late pregnancy; walk is functional, fun and

sociable; pregnancy yoga is great for helping you relax, improving posture and preparing you for the birth; and prenatal Pilates is ideal for keeping your deep abdominal muscles toned, staving off pregnancy back pain and managing pelvic pain. Q. People say that weight training in pregnancy should be avoided. Is that so? A. On the contrary, if you are used to working with weights and are sure that you have good technique (if not, get a personal trainer to check this out) then resistance training is a great way of keeping the body strong through pregnancy, ready for birth and preparing you for a speedier postnatal recovery. In fact, a strong body is less likely to be afflicted by the typical pregnancyrelated aches and pains. Having said this, I would recommend reducing from heavy to moderate weights as working with very heavy weights in pregnancy could damage your pelvic floor muscles and this is very debilitating. Q. One last piece of advice? A. Do your pelvic floor exercises! Find them boring? Incorporate them into moves such as squats, lunges, pelvic tilts, side lying leg raises and cat stretches on all fours. Not only will your pelvic floor contractions be stronger but you will also be getting an all-round workout. Dr Joanna Helcké

Bathing Baby...
B
ath temperature is a really important thing to be aware of, 36 degrees is what you should aim for. Remember, what feels cool to you, can feel warm to baby. When bathing your newborn, wrap them in a warm towel with their head uncovered. With their head in the fold of your arm and your hand under their bottom, lower them over the water. Cup your hand and scoop water over the head gently. For the first couple of weeks (at least) it is advisable to simply bathe your baby in warm water while your baby’s skin adapts to life outside the womb.
Birth & Beyond Once you have bathed their head, gently unwrap the towel and careful lower your baby into the water continuing to provide support with your arm. Most babies will cry when getting bathed and it may take them several baths to be coming used to these surroundings. Others, take to baths well and soon enjoy kicking their legs and thrashing their arms about. Gently splash water on your baby or use a soft baby sponge to wash their skin. Although their clamped cord may look painful, it is completely harmless. However, care should be given to this area to avoid discomfort. This also applies when drying as you will need to gently dab the area. Once your baby is washed, careful lift them out of the bath onto a dry warm towel and wrap them to keep them warm. Dry them softly, apply barrier ointment, and put on their nappy and bedclothes. You may also like to include a baby massage as part of your routine. Baby massage has numerous benefits and as part of your bathtime routine it can bring calmness to your baby and strengthen your bond.

It’s positive! From the moment you see those
lines on the pregnancy test, your life as you know it has already changed. Enhanced is the word I would use, as though you’ve upgraded to life in HD. It’s such a rewarding experience and the things that my children do every day astound and amaze me. However, there are always two sides to every story and as they get older and more independent, there will be days when you wonder whether Satan himself swapped babies with you during your stay in the hospital. Pregnancy. The calm before the storm... I remember waking up one morning and suddenly realising I had boobs. This was definitely new. They looked great. So great in fact, I think I spent longer than I really needed to that morning just staring at them in the mirror. I ran downstairs and showed the hubby who was suitably impressed, I even took a picture of them to remember them by when they sadly passed on. They might have still been surpassed in size by my growing belly but to me, I was still fit to be running down that Baywatch beach swinging my ponytail along to the theme tune. Yes, my belly looked as though I was trying to smuggle half of Debenhams out under my maxi dress which was close to bursting at the seams, but once I climbed into bed with my 12-foot pillow, all that was forgotten. Yes, you heard me right - a 12-foot u-shaped pillow. It was heaven...for me at least. The hubby wasn’t keen as once me and my huge marshmallow were in there, there was barely room for a mouse to lie at the side of us, never mind a fully grown man. He moaned about my cuddle replacement, but after escaping one night to the coolness of the spare room, I returned in the morning to find it wrapped around him snugly like a boa constrictor squeezing its prey - he loved it really! At around 7 months pregnant we were due to attend a wedding in Windermere and thought we may as well make a little romantic break of it together. It would after all, be our last chance for a while. Perhaps in hindsight we should have stayed somewhere outside of Windermere. It’s a gorgeous place but a 7-month pregnant woman, Windermere, walking and hills do not fit comfortably together. It seemed to take an
12 |

age for me to slowly waddle up each hill, all the time wondering if the slightest stumble might send me rolling back down to the bottom again, but we made it. I think I almost died that day. Before you know it, your long awaited arrival is finally here and you’re all settled back in the comfort of your own home. As crazy as it sounds, one of the things I was ecstatic about was being able to finally sleep on my tummy again. I could have slept anywhere in that sorely missed position, all night long...if the baby would have let me! It’s not long before the periods of being awake and the periods of sleep slowly merge in to one. I breastfed my second baby and one night awoke desperately searching for my ‘lost’ baby under the covers. He was safely asleep in his moses basket but in my exhausted state, I didn’t even remember putting him back. I know many parents that have done the same. Then there’s the whole sleeping through the night ordeal, which does take a bit of getting used to. Night after night of wondering when they’re finally going to sleep then the first time they do, being terrified about why they haven’t woken yet and going in to check on them. Babies also have a sleep sensor built in that unfortunately can’t be disabled or removed. It means that just as you are peacefully drifting off to the land of nod, the sensor is triggered and they emit a high pitched screech, similar to that of a strangled cat. When you pick him up, he will be doing a victory dance on the inside. You won’t see it but you know it’s there, you can almost hear the theme tune playing inside his head. When our second baby, Max was 8 days old, we decided to take him for a photoshoot. You know the ones, the beautiful images of these babies fast asleep in all manner of baskets, oversize tea cups, watering cans and so on. What you don’t see is the trauma the parents go through to get these amazing pictures. It took us approximately 3 hours to get ready to leave, once we’d packed pretty much our entire house and we eventually arrived at a studio heated to a tropical 26 degrees. Not a problem at all for me in my summery maxi dress. Slightly more of an issue for my other half in
Read more from Jade Smith at www.mummymayhemsimplesite.com or follow on facebook.com/mummymahemblogger and Twitter @mummymayhemblog his jeans and long sleeved top and who is slowly melting into the floor. However, I wasn’t laughing for long. I’d spent a fair amount of time that morning packing various outfits and changes of clothing for my two boys. I hadn’t at any point anticipated that holding a naked baby for 4 hours armed with only the clothes I’m standing in was a schoolboy error of huge proportions. There I stand, dutifully listening to the photographer’s instructions holding Max facing forwards, away from me. Suddenly the hubby shouts ‘he’s weeing, he’s weeing!’. Unsure where the wipes are, I start to look around the room, forgetting briefly about this small child that I’m now swinging around, spraying his little water hydrant all around the room. Eventually, I find the wipes but there’s not much point, he’s finished. The photographer’s looking slightly bemused but not to worry, it could be a lot worse. I sit him down on my knee whilst bending down in an attempt to clean the carpet and feel a warmth creeping across my lap. A river of neon yellow poo is snaking its way across my lap and down my legs, like a volcano erupting hot molten lava. I try my best to wipe it up, but I honestly don’t know why I’m bothering. I’m making it worse and I smell horrendous. There’s only one thing for it. Emerging after a fairly short trip to the ladies, where I washed the whole bottom half of my dress in the sink, I’m now sat back in the studio again with a cold, soaking wet dress clinging to my legs, slowly dripping onto the carpet. You would think the kid would have nothing left, but he goes on again and again all over the blanket the photographer is trying to take pictures of him on. At first he doesn’t seem too worried, reassuring us he has another blanket the same. However, after his third blanket gets the poo explosion treatment I am starting to think we might become his most hated clients! We did get some cracking photos though and I would absolutely do it again, I would just make sure I was better prepared next time! I breastfed Max for 7 months and whilst I enjoyed both the amazing bond that came with it and the amazing boobs also, they definitely seemed to take on a life of their own! Word of advice, you can never have too many breast pads! In the beginning, before my milk settled down I was sometimes even having to wear 2 pairs at a time just to help prevent any leakage! What I didn’t realise is how in tune your body is with knowing your baby’s feeding pattern. My body probably knew better than me and if Max went slightly longer than usual without feeding I would recognise that familiar throb and know that they’d be off on
their own, like two mini water fountains! I remember sitting in a play centre once in the early days of breastfeeding and still fairly nervous about doing it publicly. I can remember a man sitting close by and trying to cover my breast discreetly with a blanket whilst trying continually to latch him on as he kept dropping back off again. As breastfeeding gave me an insatiable appetite I was so hungry at the time I’d also ordered a BLT sandwich with the idea of feeding Max with one hand and feeding myself with the other. Disaster waiting to happen. The man looks up just as I bite in to my sandwich and squirt mayo in one direction, the baby drops off the nipple at the same time on the other side and suddenly milk is squirting in the other direction. I think if someone had offered me a hole at that point I’d have happily gone and sank in to it. Thankfully the eldest is off playing and hasn’t noticed a thing. The one thing I’m most impressed with after having my second is how loving Harvey has been to his baby brother. He was slightly jealous at first and even reverted to acting like a baby himself at times, crawling around and copying some of Max’s mannerisms, however now they are 4 years and 12 months, I can definitely see the bond between them. They laugh together, play together and enjoy each other’s company.
The only thing to watch out for is sometimes Harvey not quite understanding his strength compared to that of a baby’s. He’s much more aware and careful now he’s older but going back a few months ago, I can recall coming in to the front room to find Harvey and Max playing horses, the smallest one unfortunately having drawn the short straw of being the horse! He wasn’t complaining but probably best to advise against it! From pregnancy to ready-for-school, the time flies so fast. Everyone says it but it is definitely true. I am so blessed to have been able to experience having a family of my very own and any short-term aches and pains, morning sickness, fatigue, hard days, difficult nights, tantrums and tears are definitely more than worth the long term benefits. Samantha Jenkins Tell me about the range and why you started it? The range is outdoor maternity wear, and includes all the things I wanted when I was pregnant but couldn’t find, walking trousers, a waterproof jacket and fleece. It’s taken me a few years to get around to doing something about it, but I finally have! The range is designed to the same high technical spec of your outdoor favourites, but with a bump in mind, and also with the unique side panel feature so you can wear it during and after pregnancy, so its totally cost effective. How do you juggle family life and the business? Well I’m a single Mum to Harry, which in itself puts a bit of extra pressure on the situation, but he goes to his Dad twice a week and my parents help out and pick Harry up from school a couple of times a week and take him to his swimming lesson, or give him tea, then bring him home for bath and bed. It makes a big difference having family around to help out. What challenges have you faced and how have you overcome them? The biggest challenge so far has been getting the name out there and trying to make people aware of the brand and the benefits of the range. Having worked in marketing for years I thought lots of great advertising would be all it took, but it’s different for an established brand to a start-up, people need to see and know a lot more about the brand before making a purchase, and marketing isn’t cheap! So I’ve been trying to build up the customer testimonials and magazine reviews, which have thankfully all been very positive so far!

What does the future hold for Mother & Nature? I have lots of idea’s for new designs to add to the range, a softshell jacket, a packa-way waterproof, and a few other things. I want Mother & Nature to be the go to brand for women still wanting to stay active through pregnancy, enabling them to carry on enjoying the activities they did prepregnancy, in comfort and style.
