Mumpreneur chats with our Inspirational Business Mum 2010 winner....Carry Somer

In 1992, Pachacuti was founded by Mumpreneur award winner, Carry Somers. Since starting this amazing business, Carry and her team have been working tirelessly to prove that a fashion company can enjoy global commercial success whilst having a social and environmental conscience. Pachacuti is proud to be one of the world’s pioneering Fair Trade companies, boasting a fantastic collection of beautifully made and stylish hats and accessories. It is an honour for us at Mumpreneur to share Carry’s inspirational story with you. We hope that you will enjoy learning about her wonderful business and how she balances a fulfilling career with motherhood. Carry first visited Ecuador on a research trip in 1990 where she witnessed firsthand how the local artisans were often forced to sell their products to intermediaries for very little profit. 2

MumpreneurUK.com

On her return to the UK, Carry read Anita Roddick’s autobiography and, seeing what she had achieved in the beauty industry with no prior experience, Carry realised that there was nothing to prevent her tackling the injustices and inequality she had seen. Before starting her PhD, Carry decided to return to Ecuador to support and work with two cooperatives she had met during her first visit who both had been victims of arson attacks. Carry had an obvious talent for design and her collection sold out in just 6 weeks The trip had been a success in more ways than one, and as a result of this visit, Carry dropped her fullyfunded PhD and Pachacuti was born.

Our inspirational Mumpreneur’s commitment and dedication to Pachacuti is unquestionable, even though Carry’s journey to business success was not an easy one. In the first year of business alone she experienced the theft of all of her profits and a substantial business loan by an armed robber in Ecuador, followed by two death threats and ended up living in a van for a year to be able to repay the money she owed. Six years after her initial visit to Ecuador, Carry was awaiting the arrival of her baby. ‘’At this point, Pachacuti was still in its early stages. My life was dedicated to making the business work, not only for my sake but also because I had producers and their families relying on me. I was committed to do all I could to improve

their lives whilst protecting their heritage and skills. The pressure I felt was enormous and at times I wondered how I would manage to run a business and raise a child’’. A year after Sienna’s birth, Carry found herself as a single mother with a demanding business to run. For many people, the pressures she faced would have been too much to handle. ‘’There were times when I struggled with a sense of guilt; it was hard leaving Sienna, often for a month at a time, whilst I was working”. However, rather than suffering as a result of Carry’s long working hours and frequent trips overseas, Sienna has flourished into a grounded, self-sufficient daughter who understands and supports her mother’s desire to help those less fortunate. ‘’I am so proud of my daughter, she is her own, independent person who is also passionate about Pachacuti and the values we believe in. There were some rare moments when I doubted myself but, the thought of the hundreds of families in the Andes who were dependent upon Pachacuti kept me going”.

In the rural community in the Ecuadorian Andes where Pachacuti’s panama hat association is located, over 60% of children have at least one parent living overseas which has led to the devastation of families, alcoholism, a youth suicide rate twice the world average, increasing teenage pregnancies and declining school performance. Carry is committed to providing her weavers with a sustainable income to fit around the agricultural cycle as, without her support, they may be forced to move to find work and consequently lose touch with their culture, communities and families. In 2012 Carry even organised and funded a nursery for the weavers’ children and her Panama hat association has administered hundreds of grants over the past few years to enable children to remain in school. Pachacuti is recognised as being one of the most influential ethical fashion companies in the UK, showing at London, Paris and Milan Fashion Weeks. Furthermore, Carry’s commendable businesses ethics

have been recognised worldwide, and Pachacuti is a multi-award winning business. Over the past 4 years, Pachacuti has become the world’s first Certified Fair Trade Organisation and this year will be piloting the new World Fair Trade Organisation Guarantee System. Pachacuti has recently completed a 3 year pilot for the EU Geo Fair Trade project to increase transparency and traceability within supply chains which involved taking the GPS co-ordinates of 150 weavers’ houses, together with collecting social, environmental and economic indicators of sustainable development. We at Mumpreneur are proud to promote Pachacuti and we look forward to seeing this inspirational company and its producers from the Andes enjoy another brilliant year in 2013. Mumpreneur takes five minutes with Cotton Lily owner

Jessica Taylor

Cotton Lily stock only ethical or organic products made with babies and mum in mind. The website is constantly expanding and offers a huge selection of great products, from eco-merino wool blankets from New Zealand to biodegradable nappies. Each product stocked by Cotton Lily is sourced for its ethical origins and excellent quality and the luxury items are all excellent value for money. Cotton Lily was established in the UK in June 2012 by new mum Jessica Taylor and her baby arrived a few months after in October 2012. We caught five minutes of her time to have a chat and learn more about her wonderful company

Mumpreneur What was your inspiration for starting Cotton Lily? I started the company in my home country of Australia. Many of my friends were starting families and I was aware of the increasing concern about the production methods and the materials used in a large majority of baby and mother products. I decided that there was an excellent opportunity for me to start my own company which would provide families with unique, yet essential items that were ethically manufactured, environmentally sound and beautifully made.

Mumpreneur – What challenges did you face when starting Cotton Lily? My husband and I decided to move to the UK whilst I was three months pregnant. Cotton Lily was still in its early stages of development when we arrived so it meant I had to begin many parts of the business again. I had to find new suppliers that matched my companies’ ethos, introduce myself to the UK’s way of working and also deal with Royal Mail and the various issues they caused me! At times it was difficult to manage the company, settle our home life and deal with the pregnancy worries of a first time mum, but I can honestly say I enjoyed all the challenges.

Mumpreneur – What advice would you give to our Mumpreneur readers who are either thinking of starting their own business or who are struggling to maintain a good work/life balance? Every mum and business is different so you just have to find what works best for you and your family. I am fortunate and have a very supportive husband who understands my dedication to Cotton Lily. Shortly after the birth of our baby, my husband was made redundant. It was a stressful time but it meant that he could spend more time with us and help me with Cotton Lily. During this testing time I realised that it is perfectly ok to ask for help and I really want to stress this to the Mumpreneur readers. It is impossible to do everything yourself but friends and family members are often more than willing to help you out. There are also some wonderful outsourcing businesses out there too who have been a great help and asset to Cotton Lily. I

have definitely realised that most businesses are here to work with you rather than for you and that you just have to trust that they do have your business needs interest at heart.

Mumpreneur – What’s new for Cotton Lily in 2013? I am really excited about 2013 as I am currently planning Cotton Lily’s own essential onesie range. We have teamed up with a fantastic London based artist who has produced some great designs for us. The collection will be made from gorgeous organic cotton which is of excellent quality. It will also be an affordable range as it is really important to me to ensure that organic baby clothing accessible to everyone. We are also always looking for new organic businesses to join Cotton Lily so if any Mumpreneur readers are interested, please visit

Adorable Tots We hit a fairly significant milestone since I last wrote, Ruby and Freddies turned one! When I look back over the year it really is quite amazing what has been achieved (apologies for blowing own trumpet). It’s certainly hard work starting a business with young kids in tow but I have to say I’m loving every minute. This year is going to be a busy one for us...we are expanding! We decided that as our range has been so successful so far that we would take heed of the “have you got anything for older kids?” requests. So we are taking the plunge and going up to 5 year olds with a range of clothing that’s is practical but fabulous to be worn! (eek!) My search has begun for more UK manufacturers to fulfil this dream, its hard as it seems to be British manufacturers are in the minority. It’s so important to support British where we can and my search will continue as it will remain one of our brands key points. Our lovely designer Hana from our Little Londoners range is expecting no 3 so isn’t with us for the moment so as you can imagine I panicked-I cannot draw!!!! But I have since found two more lovely gals who will soon be bringing the range to life for me! I have a meeting with one of them next week to discuss the new designs-excited doesn’t even come close!

out there. I’m very proud of this because to be honest being a mum is busy and hard enough at times as it is. Working for myself, in this first year has been very stressful I won’t lie to you but it’s been so interesting and a lot of fun! I should have a lot more to tell you as we go along because of all the changes that we will be seeing. I may even give you sneak peeks of our new designs (would you like that?)

We are on facebook (Ruby and Freddies) and twitter (@ rubyandfreddies) where you can Being part of the MumpreneurUK network keep up to date with us too. And all our baby clothes can be found at has also been a great support; I honestly www.rubyandfreddies.co.uk can’t believe how many of us there are

Naturally Cool Kids has been in business since March 2011, and continues to experience growing demand for their natural approach that also encourages kids to be curious about what they’re putting onto their skin.

Owner, Fiona Wood says “When we created Naturally Cool Kids, we knew we’d have a receptive audience for our natural range because our research showed a growing scepticism about the potential side-effects of chemical ingredients.

Our mission is to track down children’s clothes that tick all the practical boxes and also score high on style. So functional – but also funky and fun!

What we didn’t anticipate was the pace of the snowball effect. Feedback from our retailers and direct customers is that, given the choice of using a hard-working, effective natural product, or something else on their children’s skin, they’d prefer to take the natural option.”

We know first hand that kids are by nature active, inquisitive, mischievous creatures - little imps in fact! So they need clothes that are easy to get on and off. The kind that can be chucked in the washing machine, time and time again that don’t lose their shape or colour. Great quality, pass-me-on items made from materials that are environmentally sound and ethically sourced.

And that’s exactly what Fiona aims to do; give parents a natural option. The truth is; her range fills the gaps in the kids’ skincare market rather than competing with areas that are already fairly saturated. Innovating; not competing take two award-winning products from the range: the Breathe-Easy Vapour Stick and the Cheeky Chops Lip and Cheek Protector. They were developed from a genuine need to help children with stuffy colds to breathe, and therefore sleep, more easily; and to protect their skin from chapping during teething, colds and changes in the weather. Both have won their respective awards for innovation and Fiona’s customers simply love them.

We are thrilled to have introduced Villlervalla to the UK market- a brilliantly designed range of Swedish clothes for babies, boys and girls aged 0-10 that’s full of colour, charm and Scandinavian chic. Perfect for the playground, everyday school wear or a special occasion.

•rainSplats• The idea for Splats occurred to us after a particularly wet summer out and about with our 7 kids in tow! They hated wearing wellies as they couldn’t run , climb or even splash without getting wet feet. It was a sandal-wellington dilemma, neither were right. Wellies were invented 150 years ago for farmers in the countryside, however nearly 90% of us live in cities now and experience year round mild, wet weather. We thought it was about time waterproof footwear evolved to meet the demands of modern urban kids, so after two years of product development and testing on some of North London’s springiest urban ninjas, rainSplats were born! Running the business with 7 kids is a massive challenge (with no nannies OR cleaners!!), but we are loving every minute!! We have learned so much in this first year of trading and we hope to use what we have learned to keep evolving the products and refining the brand to create a label parents trust and kids enjoy wearing! rainSplats come in 5 vibrant colours with high visibility reflective detail, low profile non-slip soles and a waterproof breathable membrane. They are light weight, neatly collapsible and easy to pack away for camping, festivals or days out. For kids who love to run, jump, scoot and best of all SPLASH!

You often hear people say, music provides the soundtrack to our lives, but what about children? Do they deserve a soundtrack to their young lives? At Zeamu Music we believe they do and so we are working with some of the hottest pop producers and writers (Gorillaz, Noel Gallagher, Sugababes) to create highly produced pop music with lyrics that relate to children’s lives, so they too get the full experience of understanding the words and enjoying the music. Children’s TV, programmes cater for different age groups, from Cbeebies to CBBC. The same applies with books, which suit the age group and ability to read, but also that are relevant and written specifically for children. So why does music go from Tweenies and The Wiggles to the pop charts? What about the Inbetweenies (4-10)? Is there demand for music written specifically for younger kids; with topics that affect them with the pop sound we’re familiar with? We’re defining a new genre specifically aimed at pre and primary school children by creating truly original tracks and a fun family of Zeamu animated characters that star in the music videos – The Zeamu world of music is for kids to enjoy and have fun with.

Pachacuti’s embroidery group who have embroidered the hat bands live half way up a mountainside in a hamlet whose name translates as ‘Hope’. Last year we were told by Mathilda, the group’s co-ordinator, “Every time I visit, the embroiderers ask if there are any orders from Pachacuti due to the higher Fair Trade prices paid. If there are no orders, they would rather earn money picking tree tomatoes as the market price for their skills is so low”. In addition to looking for new ways to use the embroiderers’ skills, such as on hat ribbons, Pachacuti has also supported the embroiderers through a partnership with local schools in Ashbourne who annually run a Glasses for Glasses day, paying to wear glasses to school to raise money for glasses and cataract operations for our producers.

Cooking for your Valentine In the run-up to Valentine’s Day, we all know that feeling of desperationwhen it comes to the allimportant evening meal, whether we are single, married or in that glorious ‘honeymoon’ period for the first time. But never fear, faithful readers! We have found a perfectly simple recipe that will get you in the mood for romance – all in under 30 minutes!

Seductively Sizzling Steaks Whether you are wining and dining a prospective lover, sharing a meal with your one-and-only or cooking for two singletons, this sizzling steak recipe will have them gushing with admiration. The steak and red wine both add a seductive note, giving the impression that it has taken hours to prepare when in fact you can sit back, relax and enjoy the rest of that bottle while waiting for your date to arrive!

Ingredients 8 Shallots, peeled & quartered 2 6oz Sirloin Steaks Crushed Black Peppercorns 25g Butter 2 tbsp Caster Sugar 4 tbsp Balsamic Vinegar 175ml Red Wine 150ml Beef Stock

Method Simmer the shallots in a pan of water for 2-3 minutes, drain and set aside Season the steaks with a little salt and plenty of pepper and heat half of the butter in a pan until sizzling, then cook the steaks for 3 minutes on each side if you want it medium (cook for more or less time to your taste) and remove the steaks, keeping them warm. While the steaks are resting, add the rest of the butter to the pan and throw in the shallots with the sugar, making sure they are nice and covered and leave to sizzle until just browning Add the balsamic vinegar and after a few minutes the red wine, leaving it to bubble down until the mixture is lovely and sticky. Pour the beef stock over the mixture and simmer until everything in the pan is combined, then spoon over the steaks to serve. Serve with French fries or a salad

We have added a classic diesel locomotive to our fleet, which may be used for part of the journey on certain of our steam tours enabling us to organise day excursions to places further afield. These trips would otherwise not be possible using steam haulage alone on today's modern railway system. Occasionally we may operate 'diesel only’ hauled tours. Meet our Mumpreneur 100 Winner 2012 Mark Rigney. Kidzone Direct was established in 2012 and the inspiration behind this fantastic company came from a trip to China a few years ago. ‘’We discovered some wonderful wooden training bikes and we were so taken with them we decided to start importing them, along with some table and chairs, and sell them on eBay. After some very encouraging sales and a few containers later we decided to expand the range of items we offered and Kidzone Direct was born,’’ Mark explains. As many Mumpreneur readers will relate with, there were some initial teething problems. ‘’ The setting up of our e-commerce website was difficult’’ Mark tells us. ‘’It was also a challenge to translate our initial ideas for how the store should look into reality, however, we have a excellent support team and we got there in the end! I would advise any budding Mumpreneur to listen to people and take their advice on board. I am so glad we listened to additional ideas of how to improve our website and the configuration of the layout. We now get great reviews on the friendliness and ease of use of the site and I am really proud of it,’’ Mark tells us. Kidzone has a very exciting future to look forward to and the whole team is feeling very positive about 2013. We would to again congratulate Mark and his team on their Mumpreneur Top 100 award!

When you’re struggling to come to terms with the chaos that’s often created by having a new baby, probably the last thing on your mind is the fact that they need to start taking exercise. However, working out regularly is just as important for your baby as it is for you. Not only will it make them fitter and stronger, helping them to eat and sleep better, but movement has a crucial effect on the development of their brain. Swimming is the only form of additional exercise your baby can do literally from birth out of the womb and into the water! Not only does it provide a complete physical work-out, but the lack of gravity allows certain key movements that would be impossible on land. Passionate about baby swimming, Tamsin Brewis she was so determined to find classes for her daughter Sydonie that she spent nine months commuting all the way from Milton Keynes to Wimbledon for the half hour lessons each week. The experience began a lifetime’s commitment to teaching swimming, so much so that for years she spent precious Saturday mornings teaching at her local pool – despite working full time in the week!

Cosyplay was founded in 2010 by mum of 4 Dr Kerstin Castle, whilst she was on maternity leave. Like many mums, Kerstin wanted to make the most of the precious time with her baby and spend time interacting and bonding. When she looked around for a suitable play mat, she was surprised to find that none were big and cushioned enough to lie comfortably with a baby during play. Babies need space to kick their legs and practice rolling about without hurting themselves and mums don’t want to sit on a cold hard floor either. Prior to starting cosyplay Kerstin was employed in the NHS helping doctors and nurses commercialise their innovative ideas. She realised that memory foam was a perfect material for a baby play mat - soft and impact absorbing, but at the same time supportive enough during tummy time. To add some convenience a soft-touch fabric, which is waterproof and anti-microbial was added. This makes the cosyplay mat usable outdoors and can be wiped clean if it gets dirty. The mat also features a zip-removable soft fleece cover, which can be machine-washed and tumble-dried.

Kerstin says: “The cosyplay mat subtly changes how parents interact with their babies, because it is so comfortable and relaxing, it makes you want to spend more time with your baby on the floor”.

Red Herring Games

Cat’s Print Shop

I am often asked why I started a Mulled Wine business. The simple answer is I like Mulled Wine. Come to think of it, I just like wine!

When Red Herring Games launched in 2007 I had no idea the company would grow so quickly! From a small scale operation with a handful of customers, in the last five years we’ve become a firm with international reach and with several different sides to our murder mystery entertainment business.

Cat’s Print Shop designs beautiful and unique silhouette prints, which are created from your very own photographs. Their prints are a wonderful way to capture moments and memories to create gifts that will always be loved.

The notion for a part time business started whilst I was nearing the end of my maternity leave as Cabin Crew. Like most mums, I was striving to find a balance between raising a family, taking care of a home and having a little something for myself. My initial guess-timate of making 500 bottles (and wondering if I will sell it all!?!) by then end of the Christmas period 2012, turned into 6 months of planning and licensing, and 2000 bottles of Mulled Cider, Wine and Port; all made in my kitchen in Derbyshire! I simply couldn’t make it quick enough! I have gone through enough spices to start my own Spice Route! After being placed in Mumpreneur’s Top 100, I set aside January 2013 to ‘take stock’ and let the dust settle. However, due to demand from local retailers (who already stock my winter range) I find myself already developing and testing my forthcoming range of delicious Home-made Summer Punches and drinks, ready for when the weather warms up! So much for my part time business! To see my full range, please visit: www.made-with-love-by-lindz.co.uk

If I had to give my top tips for business growth it would be these: 1) Surround yourself with business owners who are successful, positive people. As you develop a relationship with them they will give you priceless support and advice. They’ve already been where you are and they know the pitfalls! 2) Aim high. Strive towards an end goal which is larger then you think is possible within the year. If you set your sights high then you’ll constantly be striving towards that goal, and even if it takes more then a single year, you WILL get there as you are focussed. 3) Get your customer service right. Don’t aim for good customer service – aim for great customer service. Treat customers individually, add “10p extras” to postal orders, like a bag of sweets, and be honest about any mistakes. You’re more likely to retain customers if you have a “more then fair” policy to make up for the inevitable balls-ups. e.g. A no quibble money back policy with the offer of another product free to replace the original.

Talented designers at their studio in West Yorkshire individually create each design from your photograph, which you can customise with your own colours and text. These designs are printed on high quality archival paper using resin-coated inks and then hand mounted. Their prints are designed to last a lifetime and Cat’s Print Shop receives five star reviews from their customers for both their print quality and service. “I setup Cat’s Print Shop when I left work to care for our little boy Dexter. The silhouette prints I designed quickly became popular and my studio now creates many different styles of silhouette prints and gifts. It’s been very satisfying building my business myself, and using my design skills to create my own branding and website, where you can easily order your very own personalised print direct from the studio”

The choice is yours but ultimately it’s about taking last year’s wardrobe in this age of austerity and giving it a new season lift - with a few key pieces and some of the moment accessories. Be kind to your skin… We are completely obsessed with pampering, endlessly trying to get a better look, and buying the latest products- but do we know what’s in them? A lot of cosmetics contain artificial additives that are harmful not only to the environment, but also to you. Whatever you put on your skin will eventually be absorbed by your body and a lot of it will get into your blood stream, so you have to be careful of what you’re putting on. You wouldn’t just take a pill that you had no idea what it is, why do the same to your skin? This is such a big problem many fertility clinic doctors have started advising couples to stop using artificial cosmetics, as they have been known to damage embryos and cause infertility. Plus, with cosmetics are one of the least regulated products in the world, there really is a whole concoction of ingredients put into these mass-marketed products. So, when it comes to your body, skincare, beauty routine and general health, Insight would like to recommend considering natural and organic products to ensure you’re

gentle and kind on your skin. Boasting the same effects as the usual suspects on the beauty shelves, but with none of the nasty ingredients, such as preservatives, additives and more, not only will you feel better, but you’ll look better! So, whether you’re simply looking for an alternative to those harsh chemical fuelled products or yearning to find a gentle way to treat your sensitive skin, Insight would like to encourage you to go natural and organic, and use what Mother Nature gave us!

From the first sign of the blue line we knew we didn’t want to use disposable nappies! Baby Robyn was born in 2012 and we had our reusable cloth nappies ready. Four months later we bought a cloth nappy business:

GREEN MUMS We provide a range of cloth nappies which Robyn has tried and tested. Of course she can’t say much but we have learnt a lot.

So which ones do we stock? BumGenius, TotsBots, Close, Lollipop, Little Lamb, Real Easy, Charlie Banana, Wonderoo, Baba & Boo, Blueberry and the list is growing. We also supply nappy liners, wraps and buckets to complete your nappy stash. The world of reusable nappies can be daunting so why not ask about our trial kits. We’ll put together a bucket full of nappies for you to test over a few weeks and we even give a discount on any initial nappy purchase after use of a trial kit. As Robyn grew we invested in a sling and had to travel miles for inadequate advice. So now I’m in contact with three companies and they will be appearing on the Green Mums website soon. Meanwhile if you need help you can contact me…..

“one-in, one-out” When the Coalition Government around the corner in the form of Real Time came to power they instituted a Information (or RTI) for employee payroll. “one-in, one-out” policy for new This new scheme from HMRC, launching employment legislation as part at the beginning of the new tax year in of their Red Tape Challenge, a April, overhauls the way salary, income drive to reduce the burdensome tax and National Insurance information rules and regulations that is filed with the taxman by requiring all hamper small businesses and submissions to be made online “on or the self employed. before” every payday. While a nice idea in theory, the Coalition haven’t exactly been pulling their weight. In October 2011 the Agency Workers Regulations were introduced; a complicated bit of law which fundamentally changed the way agency workers and temps are treated by employers. Despite reports that the new rules could put 500,000 contracts at risk and cost UK businesses up to £1.5 billion per year in compliance activity the Government decided AWR was outside the scope of their “one-in, one-out” policy as it was handed down from the EU. The Agency Workers Regulations, along with other schemes introduced subsequently, have significantly increased the amount of time and money small businesses, freelancers and contractors must spend ensuring their compliance over the last two years. A study by the Forum of Private Business found that 84% of business owners thought the amount of legislation they had to comply with has gone up since 2009. Despite the Coalition continuing to crow about their small business friendliness, yet more complex new regulations are just

The taxman had originally been planning to start issuing RTI non-compliance penalties when the scheme launches in April, but has now bowed to pressure somewhat and has given all employers a grace period of one year to get their RTI ducks in a row. This means that if you fail to fulfil your RTI obligations in the tax year 2013-14 you will not face any financial penalties (but you may still be on the receiving end of a telling off).

Anna Kennedy, OBE. Receiving an OBE from Her Majesty The Queen is something most of us can only dream of doing. Those special people are recognized for making a huge difference to their community or field of work through their selfless (and often voluntary) work, whilst exemplifying originality and determination. It is no surprise that Anna Kennedy has been awarded this prestigious and special award.

Anna is one capable woman. She seamlessly balances raising her two boys’, who live with Autism and Asperger’s, with her demanding, sometimes challenging, yet highly rewarding work. We at Mumprenuer were so pleased to learn that Anna was on the Queen’s honours list and now that she has been awarded her OBE we could not be any prouder! Whilst caring for her two sons, Anna has demonstrated that will plenty of hard work and dedication, it is possible to make a real difference to the lives of children and their families touched by autism. We were very excited to speak with Anna after she received her award. ‘’ 30

I still find it hard to believe that I have been awarded an OBE. It’s a real honour and something I am immensely proud of’’ Anna explains. ‘’ There have been some challenging times over the last few years, however, I will continue to dedicate myself to improving autism awareness and running three successful educational centres for children and young adults. I know that my hard work makes a difference to the lives of many families, including my own. I feel inspired every day and I honestly love what I do!’’. Anna does not plan on slowing down anytime soon, and being awarded one of the most prestigious awards in the land has only made her more determined to continue with her work.
