Just six months later the business has gone from strength to strength, providing cupcakes for the Coventry and Solihull areas. Any chicken left over would be very tasty eaten for lunch the next day! 06
mumpreneur-magazine.com
How to cook 1. Preheat the oven to 200C 2. Slice the lemon into thin slices approx 0.5cm. In a medium sized oven tray (big enough to comfortably fit the thighs) add 100g of olives and half the lemon slices, set aside. 3. In a large frying pan heat 1 tbsp olive oil, season the chicken and brown on both sides. When the thighs are browned turn off the heat and add 2 crushed garlic cloves and 1 tbsp of honey. Mix together well. 4. Lay the chicken thighs on top of the olives and lemon. Add the rest of the lemon slices, scatter the tomatoes around the chicken and add 50ml of water. Season with salt and pepper. Bake in the oven for 20 - 25 minutes until the thighs are cooked through. 5. While the chicken is cooking make the couscous. In a saucepan heat 1 tbsp of olive oil, add the couscous and gently fry for 2 minutes then add 400ml of boiling stock. Simmer for 15 minutes stirring occasionally until the couscous is soft throughout and the stock has been absorbed. You may need to add a little extra water. Season to taste. 6. When the couscous has been cooking for 5 minutes put the broccoli on to boil or steam, and cook until just tender. Season with salt and pepper and add some butter. 7. Finely chop 3 tbsp of parsley, add 2 tbsp to the couscous once it is cooked and save the rest for garnish. 8. Remove the chicken from the oven and serve with the couscous and broccoli. Sprinkle over the remaining parsley.

s most parents would agree, travelling with tots is not a relaxing past time. With travelling, comes entertainment and the essential bulky items; strollers, cots and highchairs.
Whilst you can often find something resembling these items at your holiday destination, it is not always possible. This is what the Young family discovered on a holiday to Florida, where nothing at all was provided.
Unsurprisingly, the majority of customers have been travelling parents without the space to transport bulky items, as well as grannys looking for last minute items for little visitors. It is the only UK business that both rents and sells the baby equipment enabling skeptical parents to try out items before making an investment. Why not try it yoursely, at:

They found a beach equipment rental company that carried cots as well as baby bouncers. It made the holiday and on her return to the UK Rima Young set up iRentStuff.co.uk, providing the all essential (and some fun) items for babies and toddlers. iRentStuff.co.uk, caters to parents needing baby gear such as pushchairs, cots, car

Mumpreneur of the month
Mumpreneur of the month - Memories are made of this...
“Never give up... Never give in... and never take No for an answer!” this is the philosophy of Barbara Fowler of My Baby Log.
B
arbara is a 63 year old, (but young at heart), Bournemouth Grandmother who believes that 2013 is going to be her year. She is the Founder of the innovative award nominated “My Baby log Memory Chests.” Having raised a family, Barbara now feels that she is free to pursue her own dreams, which were put on hold many years ago. Now that all her family boxes have been ticked, Barbara decided it would be a great time to bring her own box forward. Her idea to create Memory Chest boxes for families wanting to preserve and cherish the precious memories of their babies, resulted in the stunning “MyBabylog.”
“MyBabylog” memory boxes are the perfect place to store all your baby keepsakes safely. Made from a strong, durable material designed to protect your special items for the future, with delicate hinges and a clasp, these beautiful boxes ensure that all your treasures are kept inside securely. They make a lovely gift for new parents, and are the ideal baby shower gift for every mum-to-be.
“The most recent Celebrity to purchase MyBabylog Memory Chest was Coleen Rooney!”
ankle band. Plus, a family tree for you to complete and a touching, sweet poem for new baby. “My latest Innovation is ‘My First Heartbeat’ ... can you imagine – your mum giving you this precious heart and saying...‘This is the sound of your heartbeat before you were born.’ This is very special.” “At a recent Baby Show in Bournemouth I met a Midwife from Bournemouth Maternity Unit, who wanted to buy this Innovation, she wanted to take it back and show her colleagues at the hospital. Then she realised who I was and said ‘Ah! you’re the lady who donates the MyBabylogs each year to the Maternity Unit’ which of course I do. Each year I donate a pink and a blue MyBabylog Memory Chests to both Bournemouth and Poole Maternity Units for the first Baby Boy and Baby Girl born on Christmas Day. She told me ‘The mums on the unit really try to hold on hard onto their babies until Christmas day - just so they can receive a gift of MyBabylog’. As I have a vivid imagination - I have visions of a line of pregnant mums in a row with their ankles tied with elastic bands”. Barbara believes there is no holding her back, and one day MyBabyLog will be the number one selling baby shower gift in the United Kingdom.

MyBabylog was first designed at Barbara’s kitchen table! Subsequently, a lot of thought, time and effort went into its development. Available in blue, pink and neutral, the MyBabylog is a beautiful keepsake, allowing you to store your baby’s precious ‘firsts’ all in one place. Each Box includes two storage areas suitable for larger and smaller items, three little storage pots for keeping baby’s first curl, baby’s first tooth andf hospital wrist or mumpreneur-magazine.com

National Recognition For
Anna Kennedy!
A
fter hearing about a local school that was scheduled to be demolished, Anna and her husband Sean put together a feasibility study to show how it could be converted into a school for autistic children since there was such a need in the area. She lobbied banks and remortgaged their home to raise the £627,000 worth of refurbishment costs that were needed to secure a lease on the property for 30 years. “At the time my husband and I had just £3,000 in the bank,” she says. “It was definitely a challenge but I looked at my sons and thought - We can do this.” Anna turned to her local community for help and her determination paid off. “We applied for loans, fundraised and did everything we could to get the money. I did sponsored keep-fits and others did cycle rides. Volunteers started coming out of the woodwork to help us including carpenters, painters, and electricians. British Airways put in a kitchen as a team building exercise. A fabulous gentleman gave us furniture and carpet tiles, we picked them up from Basingstoke over six journeys in a borrowed battered old van and carpeted the hall, classrooms and corridors for free. I even approached the Probation Service and organised for offenders to come and volunteer, and after their community service time was up many kept coming back to help out. It was incredible.”
16
mumpreneur-magazine.com
Setting up the school was a steep and total learning curve as Anna had to find out how to do everything from writing an advertisement for a specialist headteacher to dealing with Ofsted, Health and Safety, and CRB checks. “The hardest thing was tiredness because Angelo only sleeps three hours a night and I was looking after both boys at home full time,” she says. “We had no money and lived off 9p tins of beans, but we just had to make it work.” The Hillingdon School opened in 1999 with 19 pupils. “When Ofsted came to inspect the school in its first month, I was so nervous I was sick,” laughs Anna. “They had the power to shut the school meaning we’d lose everything, including our house. The inspector said If he had a child with autism he’d have no hesitation in sending them to us and after he left I was running up and down the corridor filled with joy!” The school is now the largest of its kind in Europe, offering 150 autistic children a safe, structured education and a brighter future. Not stopping there, Anna went on to set up a community college in 2001, a respite home for adults in 2004, a second specialist school in Kent in 2011, and now has an international following of 50,000 parents of autistic children through her website, Anna Kennedy Online. In addition, she provides training for the NSPCC and Childline on the issue of disability bullying and speaks about autism all over the UK.
In 2009, Anna wrote the book “Not Stupid” about the struggle to set up The Hillingdon School and their patron Esther Rantzen wrote the foreword. In April 2012, she released a fitness DVD, Step In The Right Direction, and its success led to national Dance Day, which fundraises for autism charities. On 12 May 2012, Anna organised the first talent show of its kind called Autism’s Got Talent, which saw children and adults with autism perform on stage to a packed audience at London’s Mermaid Theatre. The show included a performance from autistic dancer James Hobley, who had appeared on Britain’s Got Talent. Anna was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list 2012 for her services to special needs education and autism. Anna says, “People with autism shouldn’t be hidden. There’s nothing to be ashamed of. I want all children, including my own boys, to have the chance to make a mark on the world just like everybody else.”
Mumpreneur magazine
Autism Really Has Got Talent!
A
rriving at the Mermaid Theatre in Blackfriars, London, I’m not quite sure what to expect. All the performers at tonight’s talent show are on the autism spectrum and have a range of needs and abilities. I’m wondering how they will cope with being in a strange place and the sudden bursts of noise and applause, which can cause discomfort or upset for those with autism. As I take my seat, my heart is rather in my mouth. The brain behind Autism’s Got Talent is Anna Kennedy, Tesco’s Achieving “Mum of the Year 2013.” Anna re-mortgaged her own house to set up Hillingdon Manor School for autistic children after she couldn’t get her two autistic sons into any full time education. She hasn’t stopped there and her latest venture is certainly proof of that. After wrangling with Simon Cowell’s team over picking an event name that includes the words ‘Got Talent’, they finally granted her a license and their full support. With the Pineapple Performing Art School on board, author Kathy Lette, Military Cross recipient Lance Sergeant Markus Strydom, and MP Sharon Hodgeson presenting the acts, Anna looks set to deliver on her promise that this event will show everyone just what autistic people can do. There are too many performers to mention by name, but amongst those that really stand out is James Hobley. At nine years old he couldn’t read or write and wore splints on both legs because he walked on tiptoes. Within six months of taking up dance, he was unrecognisable. After wowing the nation on Britain’s Got Talent in 2011, James has become a patron for Anna’s charity. His dancing and ice blond looks are mesmerising – it’s hard to believe he’s still only 13 years old.
Ten-year-old Colin Brennan from Canada, has come the furthest of all the performers. Despite having extensive speech therapy to help him learn to talk, he has never had any problem singing. The song I’m different from Disney’s Honk brings a tear to everyone’s eyes. There’s no doubt he has incredible talent, something the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge would agree with as they’ve sent him a letter of recommendation. Martin Finn appeared in BBC3 documentary “Autistic Superstars.” When you hear him sing, you would never guess that he has severe autism and is none verbal. Twelve-year-old Joseph Ferris was also outstanding. Diagnosed with autism two years ago, he has always struggled to make friends and understand social communication, but on stage he blows us all away with his powerful and soulful voice. He’s certainly one to watch. Autism’s Got Talent has been a surprising evening, showing the ability of those with autism in a personal and impactful way. Topped off with inspirational talks from kickboxer and Olympic gold medal winner Jo Redman, who has Asperger’s Syndrome, and author Kathy Lette, who has an autistic son, it certainly opened my eyes. For more information on autism and Anna’s Kennedy’s charity, visit Anna Kennedy Online. www.annakennedyonline.com

n recent years we as a nation have become more and more patriotic and here at Mumpreneur Magazine we can only think of one reason for this sudden love we have for our Royals. It’s all down to that uber glamorous royal couple Kate and Wills!
The day these two love birds tied the knot I bet there were few women throughout the world that were not wiping tears away and uttering the occasional sob. Was this because of Kate’s stunning Sarah Burton designed dress? Maybe it was becuase of the shared looks of love between the happy couple? It could have been because we were all a little more than jealous of Pippas bum! No. Quite simply it was because one of the worlds most eligible bachelors had now been taken off the market. Since the wedding, we as a nation have gone Middleton Mad and the news that she was about to become a yummy mummy sent us all in to a right royal spin!
With the little Prince or Princess due to be welcomed into the world this month we wanted to pay tribute to our favourite couple, or more specifically, our favourite Duchess by compiling our list of the best baby gifts suitable for the new arrival, we’ve been looking at fashion fit for a Queen and we have compiled our Top Ten list of the ultimate gifts for any bouncing bundle of joy. The royal wedding may be just a memory, the London Olympics may be over but Royal fever is due to hit the nation once again and this time we’re all waiting with breath that is baited. Will we be seeing pink or blue? What will this heir be named and, because as women we always ask these questions, how long was the labour and just how heavy will this baby be? For now, we would like to wish The Duke and Duchess the best of luck with their new addition and offer one solitary piece of advice.... Enjoy the moments whilst creating those future memories.
Personalised mugs. The perfect way to start your day.
“Pickle Pie was created over a glass of wine around the kitchen table. Quite simply from friends asking me to design prints for presents, I began to design some ideas and brought ten frames to sell. I launched the facebook page and all ten frames were sold within 24 hours! I then sourced a wholesaler and brought more frames! The facebook page grew and currently has more than 5,000 likes,” said Sandra. Until recently, Sandra was a full time marketing and business manager at a jewellery wholesale company. She is a busy lady with a creative brain that never sleeps! She wanted to achieve other goals outside of work and “Pickle Pie” filled the gap nicely. Now with William aged two, she is quite simply a mummy on a mission! 2013 is set to be a big year for Pickle Pie, with a whole new range of exciting items being launched. The new range includes personalised pillowcases, mugs, fridge magnets and placemats, and there is also a new website in the making. All gifts are bespoke yet affordable, designed with love for everyday people who want beautiful things around their home. Each gift is unique and personal as Sandra and new team member Melanie work with each customer to design the perfect gift. “The best part is making our customers smile, at the end results”, adds Sandra. Made by Mums with Love is a new website full of gorgeous, unique and often personalised gifts for children and the home. Launched in February this year, the website devotes it’s entire platform to helping mothers of all ages, shapes and sizes to sell their carefully handmade wares. Founder Louise Grimes talks about how it came to be, what it entails and plans for the future.
L “
ike so many mums-to-be I was part of an online baby group counting down the months, days, contractions until the arrival of our latest addition to the family. It was in this group (babies due in April 2012) that I met some amazingly talented mums who kept themselves busy by making and crafting, all sorts of beautiful items by hand. This was the first time I became aware of the growing number of mums turning to arts & crafts to help contribute to the household income. I quickly decided that wouldn’t it be great if there was one place to shop online to buy from these mums? And so the concept was born! After a year of designing the website and fine-tuning the idea alongside juggling the day-to-day life of running the home and three young children I was finally ready to launch in February 2013. It all honesty it was very difficult to get the website to this stage. I had changed the launch date three times, (originally I had planned to launch in November 2012) and in fact there had been moments when I’d very nearly given up on the whole idea. As many mums who work can probably identify, the guilt and pressure I felt between spending time with the children and spending time on the business was immense. At various points, I found myself working ridiculous hours, constantly over tired and never able to do anything to my best abilities as a result! I realised during the first stage of the process that if I was going to succeed at being a work at home mum and having a successful business, I would need to give myself a few rules. 1. Never work when the children are with me. 2. Don’t work past midnight.
30
mumpreneur-magazine.com
It worried me a little when I started to enforce the rules, but I quickly found that I was able to work more efficiently, (I wasn’t so tired from working late in to the night and having children distracting me) and I became a much happier, less distracted mummy, (which meant the children didn’t mind if I had something urgent to deal with every now and again). Yes even I break my own rule sometimes…but only if it truly is urgent! For me, one of the greatest aspects of running the website is that we (the crafty mums and I) are all in the same boat. The vast majority of mum’s who have signed up to sell on the website, like me, have young children. There have been times when I’ve had email chats at 3 o’clock in the morning, (ok yes I admit, I have broken rule number 2 - Occasionally). We all have a passion for what we do and strive to do things to the very best of our abilities.
I’m very lucky. I have the opportunity to grow my business whilst spending good quality time with my children. I also have an incredibly supportive husband without whom none of this would be possible. I have come to see the crafty mum’s as my colleagues and this is where I want to grow the business further in the future. I hope for Made by Mums with Love to become a support network for crafty mums with real business opportunities and financial opportunities created for them.”
Five months later and the website now has over 250 mums signed up to sell their handmade items. All of which fully comply with UK selling regulations, their items CE Marked if required, (something I’m particularly diligent about). As with all new businesses the biggest stumbling block in pushing the business forward is a lack of Capital to invest in the website. I count myself lucky however. The digital world is full of fantastic Social Marketing opportunities, which with enough time and effort will drastically increase the website’s exposure and sales. Having a background in online, advertising and PR (before kids) definitely helps. Search Engine Optimisation is always the toughy, but there’s lots of free (and good) advice out there on how to improve the site for SEO without needing to inject cash.

Breast-feeding mothers love the Bibee Dress, as the interchangeable Bibee system offers easy and discrete access to the breast. Fashion savvy new mums carry a spare dress front in their handbag, so it’s not just baby that gets a quick change when clothes become milk-stained or dirty! The Bibee Dress was designed as an alternative to figure hugging maternity clothes and wrap-dresses. Everything from pockets to buttons have been tried, tested and planned with the upmost attention to detail, but the bit we are most proud of is the way a Bibee Dress skims over lumps and bumps – ensuring you look and feel glamorous all the way through your pregnancy, until your figure returns to a shape you love! self taught, Melinda learnt every aspect of the business simply by trial and error. Jewellery making came easy by observing traditional wiring methods, then mastered ArtClay, increased sales by styling and photography, learnt to manipulate graphics via youtube tutorials, built her current website from scratch and has been known to barter her photography skills to fine tune silver smithing techniques. Her creations are inspired by childhood memories of Sydney beaches and the fascination she developed for antiquities and all things vintage after moving to the UK. Observing nature, the beanie collection recreates the simplicity of a pebble, the wildlife series gleaned from woodlands and wildflower meadows, charm bracelets from wandering artisans selling talisman tokens.

“ ’m so chuffed to have been nominated for this award - I suspect it was my lovely, long suffering, husband, who put me forward. My business is quite different - its a Social Enterprise which means any profit we make, we re-invest in both the social enterprise itself & the wider community it serves. I’ve worked in the charity sector for over thirteen years, but three years ago I was unexpectedly made redundant while expecting my third little boy - Rufus. My answer to this crisis was to fight back! As a lot of mums often do when unfairness occurs so I set up my own advice and training firm called The Plan B Partnership. We are “A plan B” for people who want advice on anything money related. As well as personal advice we’ve a unique business support service called Future Proofing, which many parents, often mumpreneurs, use to help them be financially future proof & in particular, debt averse. Its free advice & planning support that they cant get anywhere else in a “One stop shop”. No one does what we do, in the way we do it and I really hope to win this award so we can represent the small, unique, survivalist little businesses that don’t just make money-they spend it on helping people too.”

arbarella Hair is a boutique hair salon based in Northampton’s fashionable St Giles Street district. The salon was launched in 2011 and since then has gained a strong local following, due to its unique mix of best in class service at market leading rates - alongside some of the best client-friendly technology in the industry. The salon has amassed over 1,000 Facebook likes, has over 500 followers on Twitter and has had over 5,000 video views on You Tube. Helen Barber, owner, puts this down to the whole team understanding their clienteles needs down to minute detail. Little things such as what preferred drink they like and preparing it ahead of the appointment. Helen says: “The hair-cut, although very important, is only part of the hairdressing experience and our mission is to ensure that we give our clients an A-list type service whether in or out of the salon. This includes providing clients with direct access to our booking system via our website and Facebook page along with a dedicated mobile website which we believe is the first of its kind in the industry” Simply visit the website listed below from your mobile to see the mobile app in action. “One of the most rewarding elements about opening the salon has been seeing my daughters develop into budding entrepreneurs having been exposed to the salons workings. Hopefully they carry on the torch long after I have hung up my scissors” “I am delighted to have been nominated for a Mumprenuer Award, however, I couldn’t do this with out my fantastic team”

t was only after being made redundant after twelve years working in catering, that Natalie Yates decided to take the bull by the horns and start her own gift company, Gifts From Handpicked Natalie soon started attending shows, buying gift lines which she describes as “Different from those you find on the average high street” and selling them through Amazon and EBay. “I was always looking for things that are out of the ordinary and new ideas kept presenting themselves to me. For example when my son was christened I started to investigate personalised christening gifts and added those to my stock.” In February Natalie was invited to speak about her experiences of running an online gift shop as part of the seminar programme at Spring Fair International. She has also been invited to join the judging panel for - Gift of the Year 2014. “It was a very proud moment when I was asked and I am really looking forward to it,” she says. So what are Natalie’s plans for the future? “My aim is really to drive more customers directly to the site and to keep handpicking some great gifts for them to buy.” See the full range of products Natalie has hand picked for you to choose from at

The next exciting step is a range of refreshingly designed utility products for mum and baby that seek to be mum’s best friend on the shelf. Products have a Baby Wisdom Tip cleverly incorporated into the product itself and will of course be linked to more information on the website. At Baby Wisdom we understand that the new mummy brain changes when you have your baby. iddiwinks is an exciting online childrens clothing store which opened its e-doors in September 2012 and what a first year they’ve had! Business owner Kirstin Abey is a wife and mum of two and runs her business from their home in North Lincolnshire. Already Kiddiwinks orders are winging their way around the world from Australia to Singapore to Canada! “We’re really excited to stock a huge new range from French Connection this Autumn/Winter as well as Firetrap, Ben Sherman and many more.” explains Kirstin. “This year has been amazing, we’re thrilled to have been featured in various parenting magazines, particularly being featured alongside big names like Tesco, BHS, H&M, ASDA and Boots which feels incredible!” Kirstin explains “When I had my children I felt there was a gap in the market for affordable childrens fashion. It seemed to be either expensive or poor quality and although there are shops that aim for the middle of the market there’s little choice. I discovered a few really good brands that were not widely available and wanted to share them with other parents. It’s been a huge amount of work, especially as I gave birth to my son 3 months before the website went live but it’s worth the work and I hope being self-employed will give me and my family a better life”. The future looks very exciting for Kiddiwinks and Kirstin has lots of plans for the business. You can see the full range of Kiddiwinks clothing and more at:

ome mums are great at their parental duties. Some are great at their jobs. Some mothers just seem to have it all sussed and that’s why they’re known as Super Mums!
Whilst we all strive to ensure the kids are entertained, their homework is up to date and all of our emails have been replied to, these ladies look like they could do it with one hand tied behind their backs and blindfolded. Are they taking some kind of wonder drug? Are they, God forbid, only drinking one glass of wine each evening or are they simply pretty damn amazing at what they do? These women will not only inspire you to be more dedicated to your everyday lives and businesses, they’ll also encourage you to refuse that second glass and respond to emails in a more coherent fashion. “It is with great pleasure that we introduce you to... The Super Mums!”
Can customers find your front door? It’s up to you to ensure that people can find their way to your front door, feel at home when they arrive and find what they need quickly. Traditional PR routes • Reading about you in printed media or hearing about you on TV or radio • Meeting you at an event • A printed advert, flyer or brochure • An email newsletter • A sales call Modern PR routes • Googling a product or service you offer • A mobile phone message • A mobile optimised website • An online banner advert • Scanning a QR code • A message or video posted on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube • A blog article you’ve written Uniting traditional methods with modern digital activity is a very smart move in these competitive times and the profitable and most publicised businesses are the ones that are cleverly mixing it up, analysing results and adapting messages to different audiences.

isa Kingsnorth is founder and Director of Lil’ Spin, a specialist PR agency for the family marketplace.
No stranger to running her own business, Lisa originally formed Lil’ Spin’s ‘big brother’ Spin - an entertainment PR specialist - over a decade ago. The agency is still going strong representing clients in genres of celebrity, stage, screen and music. Following the arrival of her daughter, Lisa found her perspective on life somewhat altered and she became fixated on brands within the family arena. What started as a ‘helping hand’, soon turned into a tangible business venture, in which Lisa draws upon her experiences as a parent, her connections with the media and entertainment industry, and her worldly knowledge of everything PR related; implementing her experience as a former editor and publicist, to help others maximise their publicity potential. Since forming Lil’ Spin 17-months ago, the agency has experienced rapid growth, assisting and advising fellow Mumpreneurs, Dadpreneurs, and a number of Parentpreneurs with their PR requirements. The agency successfully combines conventional PR with ‘social’ PR - digital media, social networks, parent blogs, etc - to ensure messages are communicated directly to those that need to hear it! MM: Tell us a bit about your agency and your clients...
MM: Can you share your top PR tip for small businesses? LK: Whether crafting your media release or conducting a pitch, ensure that you have considered the following: • • •
The timing and topicality. Identify the human interest and the ‘news’ value that underpins the story. Define the What, Who, Why, When, Where and How of your story.
MM: What’s been your proudest business moment? LK: My proudest moment was hearing how a PR initiative I had implemented to launch a brand here in the UK, achieved global coverage and ended up successfully launching the brand in several countries worldwide. I genuinely love working with my clients and I’m always thrilled when the coverage I attain for them delivers tangible results. MM: What piece of advice would you give to a budding Mumpreneur? LK: Never give-up, focus on your goal! Believe you can be everything you hope to be. Stay true to yourself and to others. Ensure you have professionals in place to handle areas of your business with which you’re least comfortable. Take time out once in a while to allow your body and mind to recuperate! Super Mums Earn £500 - £1,500 pm part time or £2,000 - £5,000 + pm full time working from home. Lynne James started working for herself in 1996. Today she has one of the most successful businesses within Forever Living Products in the UK, earning a six figure income, whilst working part time and flexibly around her twin sons. ‘There is nothing special about me’, she says and in fact, over the past 16 years she has helped many other people to realise their own success.

Beat the trend and work with a successful, international company, with a £40 million turnover in the UK, $2.6 billion worldwide, and a 25% growth over the last 2 years.
ntroducing Caroline Salt, the woman behind the Retail Recruitment business 80-20. Having worked in retail for 8 years, Caroline was contacted by a retail recruitment agency who went on to offer her a role in recruitment.
Successful ‘business mum’ is looking to work with open minded people who would like to earn £500 - £1,500 pm part time or £2,000 - £5,000 + pm full time without having to compromise current career, business or family commitments.
After gaining recruitment experience, Caroline headed up a brand new retail recruitment team for Phones4u. Whilst recruiting for a new HR Director, Caroline was approached by a candidate who wanted her to consider recruiting for their company. This would mean leaving her job and joining another firm – or would it? Having been in recent contact with her childhood sweetheart who had launched a new recruitment company 80-20, this was the opportunity Caroline had been waiting for, and it was her chance to be her own boss. Whilst not involved in the start up of the business, her obvious entrepreneurial drive has seen her run 80-20 successfully for the past 10 years, providing a bespoke recruitment service for both candidates and clients. To any new mumpreneur, Caroline shares some advice, “Ultimately if you’re determined to succeed, you will. And in the darkest moment, stay positive and believe in yourself.”
If you have a supervisory, managerial, sales, marketing, recruitment, self-employed background and would like to work from home, or feel you wish to develop an extra-ordinary income.

t never fails to amaze us just how many amazing websites are owned by Mumpreneurs! You ladies will stop at nothing to ensure your websites are not only functional but also beautifully designed. Just when we think we couldn’tpossibly see anything better, you all go and prove us wrong. With over 300 websites being submitted for award considertion every month it really is a true honour to be a winner. We love giving our winners the opportunity to shout about their fantastic work and giving them the chance to tell the story nehind their business and their sites. Here are just a small selection of the chosen few from the latest round of Website Awards
After her son spent some time in Special Care Baby Unit and only being able to pump rather than breast feed directly, one of my NCT friends was trying to improve her milk supply. She found out about Lactogenic foods and herbs, which can help promote milk production. “Thinking about our ‘cook & freeze-athon’ and wondering if those meals could have been made from lactogenic ingredients, was how The Contented Calf Cookbook came about. New mums need healthy, nutritious, home-cooked food. If you can cook and freeze those dishes ahead of time, to simply reheat when the baby arrives, even better. And if you choose to breastfeed and those meals help support you do so, better still. The website is the hub of my business. It’s important to me that it’s clear and easy to use, so customers can find out about the book, buy it and keep up to date with Contented Calf.” Find out more about Contented calf and the recipes available at:

The brands are all British and include Powell Craft, Question Everything, Marmalade and Mash and Toby Tiger. I love to source gorgeous gifts and then be able to share them with you all, basically I love shopping but who could blame me!” The gifts found on the website are in some cases unique, and in all cases manufactured and sold with value for money with the customer in mind.
“I am always looking for new products to add to my website and as the company grows I hope to be looking to expand from my current home-base to offices with storage over the next two years. There has been a strong focus on little girl’s dresses that are simple in style and have a hand-made quality to them. Thursday’s Child director Rebecca Quelch, is a mum of three and set up the clothes business during her maternity leave with her third child, who like her first two boys was born on a Thursday. She started off booking into different Christmas fairs in the local area, and found a great response to the collection she sold and continued selling that way, building up an enthusiastic and loyal customer base in the local area. It hasn’t been easy juggling the business with being a mum, and for the first year and a half a part-time job too, but Rebecca has stuck with it through difficult personal circumstances, and a tough market, and the business is growing from strength to strength. The website was launched in February this year, and was recently awarded a Mumpreneur Silver Award. As her third child starts school in September, Rebecca will be able to devote more and more time to the business, and is excited about the future. See Rebeccs’s full range of childrens clothing at:

hic Children’s Furniture is the home of kid’s bedroom furniture and stylish gifts all just waiting to be discovered.
Owned and run by husband and wife team, Alun and Kathryn. Together they have designed a collection of stylish and beautifully handmade children’s painted pine furniture.
With a wealth of experience in furniture retail combined with Alun’s background as a cabinet maker and furniture designer, this business savvy couple realised that there was a gap in the children’s furniture market for well made, solid pine bedroom furniture that arrives ready assembled (so no need to dig out your screwdriver and puzzle over leftover fixings after a hard day’s work!) “We believe that your children deserve solid and well-constructed furniture that will withstand the rigours of childhood yet still look fun and stylish with extra touches such as a choice of paint colours and handles.” “All our furniture is made from solid Scandinavian redwood pine from sustainable forests. Each item is traditionally handmade in our workshops in the heart of rural Lincoln. Our team of carpenters and cabinet makers lovingly construct our own unique designs which we hope will become the heirlooms of the future.”

The team of highly trained professional, fully qualified and insured instructors share over 40 years’ experience and have 15 children among them. All classes are supported by the latest research and knowledge and parent-child bonding receives the highest priority from the enthusiastic staff.
The Centre houses a swimming pool for classes in aquanatal yoga and baby swimming. It was built especially for babies and children and is beautifully warm and exceptionally clean. The temperature is maintained at 33-34 degrees and the water is chlorine free, meaning chemicals are kept to an absolute minimum. irsten Harvey has combined her skills in photography, teaching and writing to create a brand new business for children. Diddipix is an exciting, innovative website designed to inspire children to be creative with photography. Children show-case their best photographs through their gallery pages and can receive and leave comments and star ratings. Your child could win great prizes too, as these include Nikon cameras and the chance to be published in Diddipix Yearbooks. Children are signing up from all over the world to take part. Diddipix is run by fictional character Professor Pixel who offers advice, shares photographic news and events and reviews cameras and photographic gadgets. The site is packed with photo ideas, tips, projects and techniques as well as featuring photographers from the past and present. Not only is Diddipix fun, it is also educational. It ticks boxes for ICT and Art within the National curriculum and is excellent preparation for children who may wish to study GCSE photography. Children are naturally inquisitive and see the world through fresh eyes. What could be better than encouraging them to record what they see and interpret it in their own creative way? If we give children the tools, the inspiration and the know-how, then they can produce some amazing images and have fun in the process. Winner of Mumpreneur UK Silver website award - July 2013. Introduce children to Professor Pixel and get them signed up at:

ornish Businesswoman and Mum of three, Laurinda Taylor decided to turn her hobby of making skincare products and soap making into a business idea. The business has subsequently grown from attending craft fairs and farmers markets on a weekly basis, to having now opened a bricks and mortar shop in Bodmin, Cornwall in 2012. “Having re-branded the company in April of 2012, to The Little Cornish Soap Company, we have seen a shift in our business, to a point that we now produce and manufacture from a workshop above our shop in Bodmin and no longer from my home kitchen!” Every single product is made by hand to the companies’ own specific recipes. “I don’t see the reason for parabens or SLS or harmful ingredients in Cosmetics nor do I understand why you should use artificial colourings or fragrances, when you can obtain beautiful colours and fragrances from natural sources.” Said Laurinda. The Little Cornish Soap Company have recently launched a range of Body Butters, Natural Hair Conditioners and Natural Hair Oils to there growing list of over 100 products, which are all completely natural, along with a soon to be released natural deodorant, which is also completely chemical free. You can shop with The Little Cornish Soap Company online at

ums2b Fitwear was launched in February 2013 and is the brainchild of Brenda Patterson from Bristol.
The inspiration to develop a range of maternity sportswear followed several conversations with friends from the gym, who were expecting babies but were struggling to find any good quality, comfortable maternity sportswear.
Angel Cashmere has also expanded to offer a lovely collection of leather baby shoes and an adorable range of knitted fair trade toys that would make a wonderful gift for birthdays, christenings or any other such special occasion.

practical products that can be worn in or out of the gym. We know that during pregnancy the body undergoes many changes, so having sportswear that can change with your shape means that you don’t need to keep replacing items as your baby and your bump, grow.”
“I really wanted a website that was appealing to look at and easy to use and feel I’ve achieved that. Winning an award so soon after launching the business was a fantastic surprise and the icing on the cake and is helping with the growth and development of Mums2b Fitwear.
The range is designed and manufactured in the UK, using an innovative material, SUPPLEX®, as it moisture absorbent, allows the skin to breathe, is fade resistant, dries quickly, offers great stretch-ability and pings back into its original form when it’s washed, so that you can wear it as you get bigger and smaller!
It’s not easy starting a new business and the work doesn’t stop once you’ve launched I’d say the real work begins at that point. It’s so important to promote your business, so that people know you’re out there. We’re getting some fantastic feedback from customers and will also be selling via Not on the High Street very soon. I’m over the moon to have won an award but to also be featuring in this section has given the Mums2b Fitwear range a huge boost, I can’t thank the team at Mumpreneur Magazine enough, for their support”.
“I wanted to make sure every woman could access a range of attractive and
